Hey Guys,

First post on the forum here so please feel free to let me know if I break any rules I missed!

I have recently decided to get back into the hobby and in an attempt to keep my motivation up I have decided to start a small project; I chose Gorkamorka.

What was supposed to remain limited to a few Ork boyz and a few custom made Trukks soon became an excuse to get my teeth (teef) into some terrain, and so I started hatching my plans to make a modular and flat packable Gorkamorka Fort for the Trukks to drive around/shoot/kill each other over in games.

Here is my original design for each wall, I decided to go for a 'Waterworld Atoll' type of feel for it.

Here is what the first wall looked like (not finished)

Next I made a gate section and a small wall section and sorted a hinge system for attached them together

Next was to start the rest of the sections along with their hinges

So that the size and shape for the outer walls sorted, they need to be finished with more plasticard and then I can start to think about creating the walkways to make it look less like a series of billboards and more like a solid structure. The tricky part is making sure that the whole thing remains flat packable so I can store/transport it easily.

I managed to get some Pictures off my phone of the work I have done on the walkway idea that I have for the fort.

First up is the components that make up the supports for it, they will be 'orkified' in time:

Here is it together:

And with some more plates added:

It's already starting to look more substantial and this walkway is only 4cm wide I need to finish the outer walls sections before I can do the same for the rest and then I can tackle the gate.

All comments and criticism very welcome, hope you enjoy what I am doing!

Cheers,

-Kiblams

Very nice start. Subscribed.
Gorkamorka forts are on my to-do list and I like your idea of attaching your walls together by way of hinges.

Cheers guys!

I have added some more detailing and bolts to the first walkway and it's support:

Sorry for the bad photos, getting white details to show up is difficult with a phone

I think I am fairly happy with how it looks so can do much the same on the other wall sections, might need to add a few ladders to them too.

Do it!!

I used my lunch break to do some work on a second walkway, decided the smaller sections don't really need support.

The walkways are designed to overlap to give the effect of a seamless structure, not looking too bad at all if I do say so...

And for anyone interested, here is the new parts in their individual pieces:

Thanks for looking!

Wow I love what you have going on here! I think you are well on your way to achieving your goal of making it look like an Atol & TBH it really suits orks. Have you thought about adding any wood to it with matchsticks? the stage for the band my orks use is made from matchsticks & so far just a real quick coat of bestal brown (i've not done any serious work on it yet) but already the texture is making very convincing planks, might be useful for a few supports towards the walkways?

with the way you have designed the hinge & walkway overlap on the most recent pieces, does it still allow adjusting the angles for slightly different shape forts?

any plans for some kind of building inside? you could maybe make one of the walkways the roof of a shop underneath selling all those important things that orks need??? maybe a tower so you can build an "infernal machine" (waterworld blip) inflating out of the top??

can't wait to see how this turns out when its finished

I have considered using wood, though at the moment the structure is wholly reliant on the way styrene sheets stick to each other with poly cement, I might add wood to scatter terrain and maybe some of the superstructure.

Yeah, that is what I am trying to achieve, and I get about an inch of movement in each corner at the moment.

I was thinking of a tower to be honest, I have always wanted to build an Ork tower out of I-beams. I don't have any plans in this initial build for rooms etc. inside, though the great thing about making it modular is that I can design a different walkway that could incorporate any number of things and swap them out as I see fit.

Thanks! glad you are enjoying it because I certainly am, I actually managed to do most of the walls last night and get the fixings in place to start ding the walkways on my lunch break at work today.

Here is how it looks so far:

The small supports are what will be the basis of the walkway supports, they have all the fixings on them already

Once I am done with the walkways I have the gate system to plan and then the joyful task of scratching and chipping each and every edge of plasticard on the whole thing (It's going to get messy folks!)

Thanks for reading guys!

Right, so lots of progress made yesterday, here is what we have now:

Not long now before I can start adding some properly orky additions and superstructure

Thanks for looking!

following this from the start... looks awesome...but i have to ask...what about the angles...are they selfmade? and if so...are they sturdy enough? and when painting later on happens...will the angles be a weak spot for painting and chipping after that even?

Thanks!

I think you mean the corners? They are custom made yes; I used a styrene tube and rod system at the top and bottom of each edge to secure the walls and allow the angles to change as I wanted, the main reason for this is if I add additional walls in the future and the angles alter due to that. The system is sturdy enough that it hold well and flexible enough that if they are stepped on (I actually did this already) they 'pop' apart and don't get too damaged by it.

I am not planning on painting the rod and the bottom of each tube when I paint it all, and hope to mask them with blue tack when the time comes. As far as chipping, I am really not sure how that will go and I am fully expecting to have to touch it up regularly with silver paint

I hope this answers you questions!

indeed they did^^...well i too made my own angles for a diorama entry to a competition recently...made a scene that had three portapotties...and for each door an angled door... mine sadly often broke off by the merest touch... thus i was worried for your build...

I think with the way that styrene works with poly cement; you can get some crazy strong features with it, because it essentially melts the two parts together into one solid piece.

Here is a picture of a new ladder support that I worked on, it should show the hinges a little more close up.

They look 'Ork Safe' right?

of course it needs more rivets...but when you take a look at my sig...you´ll understand why i had to say that

i need to ask... is plastic cement the same as plastic glue?...if not then i might understand the errors of my ways^^

You can never have enough rivets! Love your projects on here!

Poly cement is what you get to put Airfix etc. together, and GW sell it in their 'Thin Plastic Glue', the 'Thick Plastic Glue' from GW is a very poor product for gluing styrene if that is what you have been using?

Now onto todays update from last night:

I wanted a different type of support for the gate as I needed it to look like there is a thickness to the walls inside, so this is what I managed to do:

I think the walls in general are really starting to feel more 'solid' and I am really liking the affect!

Next up is to sort the gate section walkway and to start work on the gate(s). The options so far are:

  • Two doors swing from each side to close in the centre

  • A single big door that swings down to close (and possibly a working mechanism for 'cranking it up')

  • What do you guys think?

    Thanks for looking!

in fact i use revell plastic glue... for all the tuff i usually use it is super! just my angles had a wee bit of a flaw...^^

have you thought about making some kind of roll up garage door? or maybe even a heaving kind of upturned drawing bridge kind of gate?...

also...i would if avalable use some other plastiiccard options...like corrugated plastic and the odd wooden plank here and there...and maybe some pipes...for diversity sake^^

I use the Humbro myself, does a god job.

I have considered the roll-up garage door, though I think it could look a little too 'uniform' for a build like this. I am almost certain I will be using an upside down drawbridge and having a part that 'flops' down and digs into the ground to stop it being opened from the outside.

I currently have a grid style plasticard on the walkways and there are bits of plasticard with flooring patterns like this: =ll=ll=ll

I am really hoping that when I add the shacks and tower it will go a long way to breaking up the lack of diversity of the fort.

oh...i must´ve overread these additions...and i plead guilty...i seldom klick the pics i just look at them in the thread...thus the diversity would have been known by me

for orks a nice strong looking grate- gate to strengthen the gate would also be nice...kinda like this:

I love the look of it. Are you planning on building extra modules after finishing these?

Thanks! Yeah, I hope to add a tower and a 'rickety shack' up on one of the walls, and maybe a 'lean-to' to one or more of the walls.

My only critique is that it's very flat. You've got great texture going on when looking straight at a wall, but they're so perfectly smooth almost when looking at them from the side. (Imagine it's on an X,Y,Z axis. Your X axis is straight at the wall, your Y is from above, and your Z is along the wall). There must be a way to rough up that dimension.

It looks really cool (and playable). You could run it as a landing pad if you wanted. Nice Job!

Thanks! Yeah I know what you mean, it was always going to be a hurdle for something that flat packs, though the walkways go a long way to making it seem more substantial 'in person'. I am hoping that when the additional superstructure elements are added (tower, rickety shacks and lean-to's) and the edge of the walkway is hidden more by the top of the ladder supports; it will seem even more solid.

it already seems a lot better than it was, but there is still work to be done I agree!

Now I m totally convinced...this is amazing! Best feature of the video were the lips and the angle system...I m actually moved to call that rocket science ...its marvelous how it's not wobbling at all...to have exact measurements for something that is supposed to look random and orky is not an easy feat...

My hat is off to you! Now more rivets, gubbinz and glyphs...and dakka!!!!!

    Yessir!

I have been working on a small 'shack' to go on the top of the walls:

The plan was to add character and break up the flat top of the terrain, but now I have made it; I am not sure about it. I still need to 'rough' it up and add some rivets and plates, but I might redo it and start thinking how to make the tower/crane/lookout. What do you guys think?

I also wanted to see how long it would be a straight wall, turns out it's almost exactly 4ft!

I guess this means I could actually use it as a pretty nice piece of terrain in a 40k game if the scenario calls for a wall to divide the table in two...

that "shak" is exactly what the whole wall arrangement needs...something that looks like watch tower and weapon emplacement...

if you are able to... i really would like to see close ups of your angles...i too have a thing for moving/dynamic even modular models...so since yours are doing so well

    I finally got round to working up the courage to adding the spikes to the tops of the walls, and I'm pretty glad I did;
