87 quid to ship 3 of them to the States, and thats before I've even bought green stuff.
They're nice, but a tad pricey...

Wait, you're doing a kickstarter for the same pads you already have created in the last kickstarter?

You don't need 3 but the expensive or not expensive part is really dependent on how much you custom base... or rather spend on other bases. 10 secret weapon 32mm beveled bases are $11-15, while theoretically you can make an infinite amount of bases. Yes it requires the initial bases (you normally get with almost every miniatures) and green stuff, but after an initial set of bases it becomes cheaper each use essentially. Whereas if you buy bases, they will never become cheaper and always maintain the same price for them.
I will say they are double sided, fairly good detail and work well. There is a slight learning curve to using them though, but other than that after my initial expense I've made more bases than money I've spent.

I missed out on the previous BASIUS Kickstarter so i was really excited to see them launch another one, but sadly the fact that their postage costs have increased so heavily in less than a year since their previous Kickstarter has killed my interest in supporting this campaign.
Hopefully Wargames Bakery will manage to find a way to lower the postage costs again for the BASIUS 3.0 Kickstarter, otherwise i just can't see them coming close to experiencing the same success they had with their 2.0 Kickstarter.

Yeah, not sure if there was a posting here or someplace else by the dude who did the game "Viticulture". It described how he used Amazon fulfillment service to get his product out and delivered to his market across the world. Would definitely be worth it to check that out and see if there is a better way to get your product sent out for a fraction of the price, gaining you more customers by doing so.
As it is, with the exchange rate and postage, I'll be unable to join in this KS.

Amazon works well if there is no 'choice', if you only have a single box to ship,
but where backers get to pick and chose amongst a whole variety of things it just gets far too expensive
(one of the ones I was recently looking at investigated it, I cant remember which, but once they went beyond 3 different packages and not even mix and match with those, it was more cost effective to do it themselves)

This is just strange or am I missing the point? This is a kickstarter for a product that has already had a kickstarter and been completed. There are no new items or rewards just the option to buy the same stuff. So effectively Kickstarter is being used as his shop ?
Or have I missed something ?

You're pretty much on the mark. From what I can tell, no new product is being funded and they state they're having this one due to demand but don't have retail set up yet. So yes, this is just for existing product that was already funded.

There's only 3 options here (1, 2, or 3 pads right?) so not too hard to for shipping logistics.
Love my Basius pad, but was hoping to have the chance to buy others from them directly. I'm guessing this campaign was made with the idea to stock up, and still hopefully offer them separately later?
The hard thing is if you want the pad for a current project, so that's why I'm hoping you'll eventually sell them direct (already completed designs, that is).

I thought they're looking to produce the existing range a different way. May mean more to them than me. I doubt I'll be backing this time. I have 3 and used zero, in part because Prodos's AVP hasn't arrived.

Whoa, just checked the prices - shipping costs have more than doubled from the prior campaign when I backed! It's $58.50 to get a single pad to the US after shipping now.
Have you considered shipping a large box of them to the US by boat and then having it distributed from there? It's awesome that so many people have jumped on as-is, but your shipping method has to be limiting your market... I have one of these, and it's not that heavy, and they stack really well. Sending a pallet of them and then distributing would be a lot more efficient, I think. Something to consider for the future!

That is correct the Amazon route becomes expensive when having multiple items because you have to have a registered UPC for each item. Then there are some other small fees that start to add up when you have 10-20 different items to offer. It can be great if you just have one to two boxes that are the same and go out to everyone though.

It depends if they actually created the molds and cast them themselves or have someone else do it. Normally a KS funds a print/production run and they are typically small depending on where from 250-500 copies. If there were additional sold as add-ons or they only purchased just enough for backers then it isn't unusual for Kickstarter to launch the same product. It basically letting them purchase another print/production run. Keep in mind I have no idea if that was happened.
I know at some point they planned on selling them through a website but I can't find links for that anymore. I would guess that shipping probably was a higher cost than estimated initially (probably why the raised shipping because they are actual costs). Judging by the FAQ that says only 3 is the max, there were people with more than 3 which had a much higher shipping cost.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
So they were created but it doesn't look like they actually produce them, they outsource it to History Craft. They might not have 'extra stock' left over from the first KS.
History Craft will produce the Basius Basing Pads and ship them as soon as each Backer order is ready, so we can confidently say that the pads will be of superb quality, and promptly shipped out to all pledgers.

Ridiculous shipping. Not buying 60 bux worth of toilet paper in one go even tho I'll definitely need it at some point, sure as hell not buying 60 in bases. Of the same design.

IMHO: Pressing green stuff into a negative will always produce somewhat "soft" detail (especially if using water as the release agent).
Thus I would have been *much* more interested in this product if the moulds (which are really nice) would have been made from silicone rubber (instead of resin). Then you could have poured resin on the mould - creating cheap and stunning gaming tiles, terrain and the like - in addition to bases with crisp detail.

The difference being 95% of us are not equipped or supplied to make resin anything.
I can make sharp enough edges and details out of my Basius 1 and 2 pads using greenstuff and milliput. I use water as the release agent, but the best thing to use is lube.

Hi all
its not a shop - The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund the development and testing of a BRAND NEW molding process (a whole new way of working with our resin and our sculpting) - to further refine & improve BASIUS. We need YOUR help to make it work!
B2 was a contracted production run - B2.5 will be too - but Bfuture should be able to be a free-running thing fingers crossed
Basicaly we need funding to set up BIG Equipment & process to get the production moving fast enough to meet demend - that is why we have limited backers to 3 max this time.
once we have the equipment to do it - we can launch Bfuture without limitation to numbers - whilst getting new pads out there to add to the 19 already made.
We need your help guys!
Postage is more than last time as we are not using Mantics service - we are using Royal Mail.
Cheers
Dave

The pads are resin?
Wouldn't the fine detail bits break when you applied pressure to the base?

They are fairly strong resin, it isn't a soft resin normally used for miniatures. I believe it is a rigid that is almost equivalent to a hard plastic. Green stuff is very malleable, put it on the base and then using vaseline so it doesn't stick to the pads, with pressure gives you really good details on the pads. I will say there is a bit of a learning curve to get it right, so you don't overuse green stuff (a little goes a long way) but after a few tries it goes pretty well. There are some video examples demonstrating it throughout youtube.

More information on the Reaper threads. They're definitely enthusiastic about the product, but agree it's a high-end product that has an expensive price. If you don't like the price, search on "miniatures texture stamp" for alternatives. I just crank out tabletop mini's for boardgames, so sand, cork, and glue, or texture gels work for me. Thanks, Dark Severance, for the info! http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/64045-basius-25-the-tabletop-wargames-base-stamp-system-returns/ EDIT: Ronald X's bases: EDIT: Why you no retail? Crowdfunding only helps creator overcome *one* obstacle of projects: often, a project will need a large lump-sum of money at the beginning of the project. Crowdfunding does *not* automagically establish the means for a creator to bring his product to retail (Amazon's Launchpad is a service that fills in this gap), and many creators have gone bankrupt because they overestimated the retail demand for their product when they produced units for backers and estimated retail demand (cheaper that way). In other words, selling product through KS and not retail may become a preferable business model for some small companies. Cthulhu Wars, for example, said they could not offer their game to distributors at the standard discount distributors expected. Johnny Lauck of MegaMiniatures (Car Combat KS started today) is making miniatures for fun, so doesn't want to deal with retail. And, of course, retail takes away resources (human and cash) that could otherwise be spent on other parts of the business.

This hits it on the head
and from their comments section
We are not looking to retail them as we do not have the space in our home to store stocks of pads - When we first started we expected to maybe sell a few pads a month and do retail - but this expectation has been shown to be an Awesome underestimation! Kickstarter is designed for people to be able to do 'batch runs' of a product. BASIUS is made in the same way a board game is made - in a batch of so many 1000s
This is why it's important to jump on the project when you see it
You could almost call us 'Boutique Sculptors'
Thanks for supporting us!!
It will be interesting to see if the trend of KS being used as a batch pre order store continues and not just for WGB
