I'm thinking of equipping all my Sergeants in the Infantry Squads with Bolt Guns so that they can have a weapon with equal shooting range. Is there any major reason not to do this?

Depends how many sergeants you're upgrading.

I think Sergeants look cool with a laspistol. If you're happy with bolters though there are much worse ways to spend the points.

It's not bad, it's just not particularly amazing and there's no bit for it.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

It's a decent upgrade and an easy conversion to do. Just take a bolt gun from a marine kit and mash it with your guardsman.

It's 1 point for a bolt gun, it's far from bad.

It should, however, be just about the last thing you spend points on in your army. Depending on how many squads you're running that could potential escalate to 10+ points with relative ease, and once you get up there you may end up dropping something far better in exchange for those (largely useless) bolt guns.

Just model them with Lasguns. I am yet to have any problems with doing this and it adds to the sections overall firepower, especially when performing FRFSRF

For a point you up grade the ap by 1 and strength by 1. Pretty good point value imo

On moon miranda.

It's not terrible, but it's only something you should do if you have points left over, not something you should really go out of your way to bother with, as the minor additional firepower you're adding won't change anything in most games. You're probably better off spending the points on 5pt heavy stubber upgrades on vehicles.

Thing is, you can only do it for one model in each unit, so you're barelygoing to be increasing firepower in the whole scheme of things.

I did it for every one of my Sergeants. It typically costs me about 6-10 points, depending on what I'm running. I like the look. If I could give him a lasgun, I would, but the only rifle option he has is a Boltgun, so that's what I run.

I figure between all of the Sergeants, if I kill one extra Marine with them, I've made a wise investment. And I like the look. There's little reason to take the upgrade, but no real reason not to, either. I like the extra shot[s] at range. I'd rather have 5 bolters than one Grenade Launcher. *shrug*

I guess it depends on your playing group - in my short time on Dakka, I've come to understand a lot of people here play in very competitive settings, and even a wasted ten points puts one at a disadvantage. Like yourself, I go for what looks and feels cool. I can imagine the seargeant pointing out a target and having his squad send massed lasgun fire in that direction, punctuated by a solid booming as he fires a bolt round or two. Then needs to sit down because he has winded himself with the recoil.

I do it, I like it because to be it feels fluffy. No way an NCO makes it through so many years of service, and an soon as he makes NCO and leads a squad, he ditches a long gun, for a side arm and close combat weapon. No way, hahaha

How does it add to fire power? I thought that order only affected lasguns and hot shot lasguns....?

It does. I think he's talking about sergeants with lasguns, which I'm not sure is an option.

As noted, Bolters aren't a bad call for 'spare' points. Look at it this way; if you've got 10 infantry squads in your army (you're fielding a company or something), then 10 points turns laspistols into bolters. Which goes from no shooting from your sergeants to the equivalent to a marine tactical squad, for 10 points.

Stubbers on tanks aren't bad either, but you pay for the longer range with less shots per point.

Because the Sarge normally has a Laspistol. However I give mine a Lasgun, allowing him to shoot further and add an extra shot or two to the pool when performing FRFSRF as opposed to the crappy Laspistol which is a 12" ranged popgun cum flashlight.

Which is a great idea, but I'm pretty sure that's not legal unless I missed something. IIRC the only options are las pistol or bolter.

True, it isnt legal but my opponents have yet to complain and if they do I use the model as a Laspistol armed Sargent.

I would love to give my Sergeants lasguns. Then I can feel like my Sergeant is actually doing something other than dying.

I really miss the days when I could give my Sergeants lasguns with auxiliary grenade launchers. :(

Yes, and if they are not okay with it I drop the Lasgun for a Laspistol and CCW, or a Shotgun if it is a Veteran section.

That's cool then. I'd be fine with it personally as I find GWs weapon restrictions to be very arbitrary and stiffing creatively

No, sadly they were 1-shot 18" krak only at the time. Then the newer Elysian list came out and Aux. Grenade Launchers became standard grenade launchers that happened to be on a lasgun, but suddenly only command squad veterans could take them (before, sergeants and any Veteran could take them).

My Vostroyan Firstborn Sergeants and Officers twirl their collective mustaches and wield their fancy laspistols and close combat weapons at the lot of you. We don't need no stinkin' bolters!

(But seriously it would be really hard to convert them and I don't have that kind of time).

Take it easy.
