Right have payed a few games with the war convocation and was too enthralled with my selection of the ad mech robots to finish the remaining points off.

Was thinking about weaknesses and was pained at foot slogging the vanguard up the table. Thought about stepping it up by introducing some allies.

My list so far is a normal war convocation with the following extras...

5 more vanguard
2 more dragoons

That leaves 400 - 300 points left over dependant on what imperial knight I take. Space wolves were my first ever models collected so have a place in my heart and I thought I would utilise their drop pods using the champions of fenis rules allowing 1 HQ and 2 elites being taken instead of the normal cad.

What are your thoughts on the following options

A)
3 drop pods + iron priest + lone wolf + wulfen (360pts)
((Drop pods contain 1. Wulfen 2. 10 man vanguard 3. Ruststalkers. With dragoons charging up the table and infiltrators infiltrating meaning there is a lot to deal with quickly! This should allow destroyers, Rangers etc time to get in position with imperial knight adding backup firepower))

B)
2 drop pods + wolf Lord in thunderwolf + 2x lone wolf + thunderwolf cavalry (385)
((Drop pods contain 1. 10 man vanguard, 2. Rustalkers. Thunderwolves to charge up quick with dragoons and infiltrators rest to get in position as before))

Any other combinations of space wolves that I've overlooked?

Is what I've suggested even viable?

Good use of the points or should I forget fm drop pods and think of other means (transport etc)?

Thanks

I would go with option B

C)
Company of the Great Wolf
Rune Priest
2x Servitors
3 Drop Pods

Officio Assassinorum
Culexus

Pod in culexus and grav Kataphrons (or whatever unit is needed).

Yeah that would be the most affective but I'm not sure of the idea of just taking space wolves to get an assassin. A little bit cheesy allying to get an ally? If you know what I mean.

Thunderwolves better than the wulfen?

CotGw is not there for the Culexus only, it is there for a cheap psyker, 3 pods and 2 crappy but cheap servitors to sit on objectives etc.
What this gives you is Drop pod alternative for a number of troops, including the culexus. If you get lucky with your psychic powers and get Electrodisplacement you can drop in a servitor and replace with a unit of e.g. libby + ruststalkers for 1st turn assault. It's about tactical flexibility. And hardly "cheesy" or whatever that means these days.

Thunderwolves are good, e.g. 4 captains on wolves with fists and shields in a deathstar, but expensive. Wulfen is probably better for this list if you can fit them in.

But as always use the models you like!

Hmmmm

That's got me thinking... Good advice thanks!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hmm or take the following

3x Thunderwolves
1x Battle leader on thunderwolf
2x lone wolf
1x Stormwolf

Stormwolf to drop of 5x rustalkers and 5x vanguard as it's an assault vehicle they can charge straight away plus gives me some much needed aerial presence (no points for upgrades though!)

Or on a similar thought...

1x rune priest
1x lone wolf
5x wulfen
1x Stormwolf

Lone wolves' eligibility as an elite choice is questionable at best. Sure, they are listed as an elite in the book, but the wording of the way to take them causes issues. Just use servitors to avoid any rule debates if you aren't taking iron priests.

I would take pods instead of the stomwolf. You have more flexibility and can choose to drop grav or plasma depending on your opponent. You lose some AA, but dunecrawlers should be filling that role to save points, plus they start on the board and are great at AA.

Looks like the recent FAQ does not allow battle brothers to deploy in each others transports, so i would rethink the culexus + pod thing now.

Do you have a citation on that? I was under the impression that BBs were fine to deploy in an allied transport so long as it wasn't dedicated to another unit.
