We had a guy who would come to our LGS, play in events and scoop if he was loosing by turn 2, would make plans and never show up and NEVER buy anything from the store resorting to purchasing online. Through just ugnorungbthe guy and refusing to play him he has since left the game store...good riddance.

I was wondering if anyone here has done the same thing?

To be honest, you sound like the jerk here. Can you blame the ghy for not wanting to pay GW prices? Not only that, there is one less person to play with, as crappy as it might have been.

Based on the limited info here, it casts an ugly shadow. Not all players understand the game or strategy it takes to win. The more admirable thing to do would be to give said player advice on how to play. Whether it is list suggestions or tabletop strategy, I would assume he or she would have appreciated it. The game needs players to exist and running players out is not helping that or even the shop. Not everyone can support the store by purchasing models. My local store is one example. I don't buy models there, but I buy paint, snacks, food, and the occasional board game to help his economy. If I was gone, that revenue stream goes with me.

Just my $0.02.

To be fair he never spent any money in the store, could he be considered a customer at that point?

Weren't you earlier seeing 'no big deal' in recasting parts, and now you're worried about the good of a store?

And yeah, you're contributing to a toxic environment.

No, of course I can't blame the guy for not wanting to pay GW prices. But if you aren't going to buy anything from the store you're playing at then you aren't a customer, you're just a parasite taking advantage of their space. And you can't really complain when people decide that you aren't welcome anymore.

There's a difference between "not winning" and "ragequitting on turn 2 because you lost a unit". One is the natural state of a newbie, the other is just bad behavior.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

That's okay. I drop six, seven figures a month at my FLGS. The owner named his yacht after me.

I dropped 10 figures once. Fortunately that tactical squad survived without damage so I picked 'em up and continued setting up for the game.

I had had some bad news... think my house was just burgled. Guns stolen. Family heirlooms etc.

Went to FLGS downtown to blow off steam. There were kids inside. Some drunk bums out front got into an argument.

I was ready to beat the living hell out of a local derelect. Any derelect. I was scrapping for a fight. But Im not a fighter. Im a dumpy gaming type coward. Nevertheless, I was enraged. I couldnt believe what I was doing. It was a full blown fugue. I felt dangerous. Yelling at them and threatening them and calling them names. I was lucky.

They were really surprised. Shambled off. Not something Ive ever done before. I apologized to the owner. He thanked me, said theyd been hanging out there all day.

Then... got my butt handed to me by a fat kid playing necrons.

I did it a couple of times as a mos after 7th ed came out. We had a couple of guys who attended every game night, stayed all night, one of whom often bragged about not having bought anything for five years, and the other was recommending to other customers on the 7th release date to buy it from a third party seller. For the next two weeks they kept trying to play with the 6th ed rule book despite warnings. They were both adamant that they wouldn't buy the 7th ed rule book, which we said was fine as long as their opponent had it. That summer we did a maelstrom campaign, so either rulebook and bookkeeping, or cards. Five years guy refused either and was told he wouldn't be a to participate in the campaign (aka any 40k game) there for the next 10 weeks then. He looked so smug as he left, as if we were the ones missing out on something. The other guy eventually caved and bought the rulebook, after a few months not attending and missing his hobby.

One of my friends has run two people off. Both in WHFB, and they were two people both hated by the store and the other players. He was thanked by the other members of the community for handing them their butts and sending them packing. Both were flavor of the month guys who were really nasty to the players, bought everything online, and only contributed to the store with tournament fees. Everyone was a lot happier after they were gone.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Aww, you beat me to the punchline! Well, whatever store you play at, I'm now running away from in the opposite direction.

"Parasite"? Don't you realize that people to play with at your store are content for said store. They're more important than tables or terrain. simply being there and being someone to play with is the helping the store, even if you don't buy. Regardless people to play with are an attraction to your lgs, and do bring people into the store.

It should be up to the store owner to "run people out" for not buying. Not you.

Bad playets run good players off from the store. People stop wanting to play at the store. If a store bans a person they get a reputation and people talk. If via negative social reinforcement a player is run off then the store cimes off clean.

This.

It could be they support the store with MtG purchases, comic purchases, or stuff on nights you aren't there.

It isn't your job to police anything. It's the store owners.

If you find yourself feeling so vindictive that you want to ruin someone else's day, then YOU should leave and learn to fething grow up. If you don't like playing them, just say so. You can politely say no to a game.

I’ve run people around.

Way back at the dawn of CCGs, me and my friends were the core regulars at the FLGS. We played a lot of MtG, and helped get new people into the game. Eventually a bunch of guys kept bringing tournament-level power decks to our friendly store.

So we switched to Jyhad. After a while, they grew tired of playing magic with themselves, and picked up Jyhad and joined us again. Took them a while to get up to speed, and buy the card stock to build the killer decks they needed to dominate. (which was a lot harder in large multiplayer vampire games). So that phase lasted a while.

Then we switched to L5R. Or Shadowfist. Or On the Edge.

We never said “no, we’re not going to play with you” It was not our place to exclude people from the store. But it was unfortunate if we didn’t have decks for the game they were currently playing on us.

This. Sure, I've played some guys I really didn't like and complained to my friends about it. But I've never run people out of a store. If I ever had a big enough problem, I'd tell the staff and let them handle it.

This, because customers deciding on their own that other people don't belong and need to be pushed out is how toxic cliques form. As some of the stories above show, gee, not everybody games the same way as you do, but when that causes conflict, the intelligent thing to do would be to try and talk with the person about the issues, rather than engaging in passive-aggressive bs.

Seems like the few people who are bragging about running people off should reevaluate themselves. I'm thinking they might be the people who should be run off. Thank goodness the vast majority of people in this thread seem against at this action, giving me some hope concerning my fellow gamers.

Just a guy who would buy cheap gakky models off ebay, just to sell/trade them to players, then use the money to buy more off Ebay. Wasn't good for the store, and wasn't great for the community.

The owner of the store banned him for a few months, and told him that he could then come back if he knocked it off. Well alot of us in the community would buy/trade stuff in the store generally their was a unspoken rule that what ever you got, you should then put into the store/buy something. So we just boycotted him in regards to tradeing/selling, as to support the store owner is stopping the practice so we could still do this in the shop.

He stopped showing up when he realized he weren't going to trade/buy from a guy trying to play some strange Ebay selling/pawning game.

People would still play him, and he was still welcomed to the store as long as he knocked off the bad behaviour. He choosed not to come back.

I feel this is a good example of "running" someone off. Don't pull passive aggressive bs, if the person is doing something unacceptable just tell them it's unacceptable. They can then make the choice of if they want to correct their behaviour, or move on. If someone is being a jerk during games in a tournament, then the organizer can give them a warning that their behaviour is no acceptable. If the person is a jerk, then people are just choosing to not play him any more.
