Hi!

So I am having a battle with my friend soon who plays Ultramarines (DEATH TO THE GULLIMAN!). All I know about his list is he has 1500 points of ultramarines including that storm talon thing they fly and a Imperial knight.

I am gonna push for a city battle when we do this and for this battle I decided to make a lore friendly word bearers army. It's not very competitive however I have 177 pts left which I'm not sure how to spend.

I am thinking either a five man possessed squad into a rhino with the dark apostle to get them into the space marine ranks to raise hell, OR a 35 man blob of cultists with auto guns to sit back and pepper the enemy. Any advice? remember no cult units or anything that is not fluffy

I was thinking that if I take the blob of ranged cultists and give the dark apostle the burning brand instead, I could have a close range fearless blob of las guns and burning brand.

I would say the cultists make more sense from a lore view point, they could be the locals joining the cause in a Chaos incursion.
I'd also suspect they'll do more for you in game than the Possessed squad

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

Yeah I was thinking that, I'm afraid the possessed will just get wiped out in one turn by the twin battle cannon of the Imperial knight. If only I could assault out of a rhino.

I can afford 35 cultists with 32 auto guns and 2 heavy stubbers.

Think I'll stick the dark apostle in them and just use them as a propper meat shield.

If you're going up against an Imperial Knight I'd suggest making all special and heavy weapons meltas. With the extra points, get a 3 man terminator squad (the Annointed) with power fists and combi meltas. DS them behind the Knight and make him change his shields around. You could always drop one squad of CSM for Cultists.

I wanted terminators but unfortunately I have none painted as terminators (and we agreed to use fully painted propper stuff)

But the meltas I could try fit in! Bear in mind though that the plague marines are going to try take out that imperial knight by glancing it to death on 6's!

I don't see any in your list. And even so, Imperial Knight's initiative is 4. Plague Marines are 3. And hoping for glancing on 6's is never a good strategy, unless you're Necrons and ALL your stuff glances on 6.

Very very bottom, the raptors are also there to specifically target the knight. never underestimate, hoping for 6's is not the wisest choice but they will keep him tied up for hopefully at least 2 turns. If even 10 of them survive after the charge which i think they will along side the herald that's 24 glancing on 6 attacks so it should do something!

Ok some advice:

I would ignore the knight and play to the objectives / focus on killing the rest of his army. On its own the knight is not very good at getting objectives and you will probably waste any shots going into it. (If you assault it with the plague bearers or letters you might be able to tie it up for awhile, but it is pretty fast (12") and might just walk away from them)

Get the new Black Legion book - there are some sweet formations in there, like one for Apostle and cultists that gives them back D6 guys every turn. And a 'cabal' of sorcerers that gains a power that allows you to control one of his units and shoot it at another one of his units. (You would still be word bearers of course)

If you can, I would run as many of those Chaos Marine models as you can as Havocs (you can even do Havoc squads with 4 meltaguns...4 autocannons is also good) and give all of them rhinos. (hell for the game just make some cardboard boxes the size of rhinos if you don't have the models)

If you get dataslate Hellbrutes that gives you a few interesting ways of fielding it. Like one formation gives you 2 fearless cultist units that can basically look out sir for the Hellbrute and if the brute dies they get zealot.

I'd give the spawn mark of nurgle - toughness 6 spawn are awesome.

Strongly consider using the apostle model...but counts as a lvl 3 sorcerer (still fluffy since Word Bearers Apostles can summon demons etc)

Goodluck!

A lot has to line up well, but at the same time it's your chili. Don't let me tell you what tastes best for you. If you think you can win this way, go for it. I don't know how many times I've pushed back other people's advice and gone with what I thought would work and won. My Helfist Murderpack formation being a prime example. I can take out 3 Imperial Knights with that one group of Helbrutes.

The knight is armor 13 in an assault, the raptors can't hurt it. It will stomp and kill most of them and they will likely run away. I would try to tie up the knight with the 20 plaguebearers or letters, with invuln save 5 they should be able to tie it up for a bit. Use the raptors speed to go for objectives.

@darth mox, I very much intend to get another two hellbrutes and run that formation as I think it sounds dangerous!

@chaosmarauder the raptors have two meltas, I don't intend on them getting into combat

Also just out of interest? Do you not need to play as black legion to use the formations? I like fluffy lists for better immersion, do those formations just end up in the black legion book for any other legion or is it really just for black legion players?

Ok guys thanks for all the help, how is this? 5 meltas scattered throughout the the army along with several melta bombs and the plaguebearers to deal the the knight (If I have to)
