I'm taking up Warmachine with the release of the mk3 rules. Can any veteran players help with a few questions I have?
1. Will there be more terrain used in mk3? I like tables that have nice, varied terrain and are aesthetically pleasing. Every time people played mk2 in my local shop the terrain typically consisted of a fence and a small puddle/lake.
2. The new boxes look good for getting starting and I'm thinking about the Circle of Orboros of Trollbloods, although I'm not sure the models included are 'optimized.' What would be the average $$$ to top these up to a decent tournament list?
cheers!
While the idea is to use more terrain, it really is up to the individual store or tourney. If they are hurting for good terrain there still won't be much. And if you are just playing a one off game with someone else, then the terrain can be whatever you like, just like the old rules. Don't get me wrong, I like terrain. But it is all but impossible to mandate or control.
The new boxes do look good. To play in most tournaments you'll probably need a 75 point list and then a second list (which can use some or all of the same models) I don't think Mk3 has been out long enough for tournament lists to really start to form. But at that level you are probably looking at a unit or two, another warbeast or two, probably a few solos and/or
UAs. It all depends on the caster and how the meta ends up setting up.
My recommendation is to start with smaller games and work your way up to 50 points. And then up to 75. Then work on building your second list for 2 list tournaments if that is the direction you want to go. You will undoubtedly buy things early on that you end up not using as much later on. But a variety of units, warlocks, solos, etc is probably a reasonable goal anyways. In Mk 2 there were no "tourney lists" like in other games that anyone can simply buy and start raining death on people. While your list is important, you have a number of options and skill makes a much bigger difference. I expect Mk 3 will be similar, even with the rules that have been somewhat streamlined.
