lysander (Nid objective is to kill the HQ)
5 tacs + ML
5 tacs + ML
3 honour guard
dreadnought - no upgrades
5 sternguard
landspeeder with TML
Whirlwind
5 devs - 4 flakk MLs

any glaring weaknesses I should be aware of? I'm defending a castle along with a space wolf player so no need for transports/mobility.

facing Nids - why not roll with Heavy Bolters v ML? Bolter drill is one of the few things we get to use and the Wolf player can bring better icy weapons.

Are you facing Big Bug Nids, swarm Nids?

Nid a bit more info!

Sternguard just for special ammo?

No madam, 40,000 is the year that this game is set in. Not how much it costs. Though you may have a point. - GW Fulchester
The Gatling Guns have flamethrowers on them because this is 40k - DOW III

The flakk is for a brainleech/devourer flyrant (I don't like this much prep but if I go skyfire-free then we're boned), missiles in the tac squads are because I expect an equal ratio of big bugs and critters so I figured frag/krak would do perfectly, but I might change them to HBs to save points (plus I have plenty of MLs in the dev squad...). We're facing a 3000pt list and he has recently got a bunch of MCs, but also owns enough gaunts to use for the formation where dead gaunt squads enter ongoing reserves on a 4+
And the sternguard are mostly there for the poison rounds to force MC saves, or to ignore cover on any sneaky mobs, but also to put more marine bodies on the walls.

I'm fairly that he will bring 2 fexes, a flyrant, a Blord + gene stealers, some warriors and gaunts, a tyrannofex, lictor.... thats all i can think of off the top of my head.
But as I've seen most of his collection before and I know he has to use all his models to fill the 3k points (only possible with upgrades on most of his squads) ,I'm trying to avoid tailoring too much in the spirit of fairness He has no idea what to expect from the SM lists, we both have big enough collections to take virtually anything, whereas we know what he has to make a list with.

That's a lot of bugs.

I do like the Whirlwind addition. Maybe another if you have it instead of the speeder.

If you have the model, I suggest you take a pair of Storm Talons with Typhoon missile launcher instead of flak missile launchers, or even a Squad of 3 Grav Centurion is better as anti FMC. You will at least make Flyrant jink to reduce its damage output, while AP4 cannot do that.
If you are playing alling the SW player, I don't think you need Honor Guards, Lysander is good enough to defend your gunlines, you may let the SW player to handle other close combat. They are really good at it.

Final list I went with was:
lysander
level 2 lib (divination)
5 tacs with H. bolter (it was agreed that the SW player and I only had a 1 HQ and 1 troop requirement each)
5 sternguard
dnought - TL heavy flamer, heavy flamer
3 grav/bolter centurions
5 devs - 2 flakk and a rhino

The game went amazingly! While the nid player failed to assasinate the two chosen HQ units (lysander and ulrik the slayer), each side had no more than 3 units standing when the dust settled, and there were some amazing fights that broke out: Logan grimnar drowned in a unit of 12 hormagaunts the instant the gates were breached (turn 2), the dnought punched the swarmlords lights out after the hive guard took grav to the face, ulrik killed a deathleaper after lysander (unsuccessfully) chased it round the castle for two turns, and the tyrannofex did bugger all until the 4th turn due to some bad rolling

The game definitely looked the part... There were two small (roughly 20 models each) imperial teams in a castle, and the area outside the wall was completely purple with bugs!
