Ill be playing in a smallish team tournament in a few weeks and was thinking of running the brass stampede formation as the bulk of my force.

But after looking at the rules for it and seeing that the units in the formation need to be within 3" of each other to get the automatic d3 mortal wounds on the charge it almost seems pointless.

Say i have 2 units of skullcrushers next to each other. One charges and gets the automatic mortal wounds. If they charged far enough away now the other unit doesnt get the automatic wounds and has to roll like normal.

And its entirely possible that they may never be within 3" of another unit from the formation for the rest of game. Making the formation potentially useless (aside from the 3" charge bonus) if they are able to get a 2nd or maybe even a 3rd charge off by the end of the game.

Am i missing something or is this formation just kind of.... blah.... with this range requirement.

Measure after all charges are completed. Just keep them relatively close and you should be fine. It's not designed for you to have them spread out, no.

But auto mortal wounds for the 3 units and the Lord is nothing to sneeze at. You could potentially destroy whole units just on the charge. You are auto wounding 4D3 mortal wounds vs. maybe happening on a 4+.

Even better if you charge multiple units and can keep them close...
