Eye of Terror

So for Christmas me and my brother are getting Dark Vengeance. He's getting the DA and he might make them Blood Angels or something. I'm getting the CSM. I want to know how I can build off of the contents of the box. I want to go for a Nurgle themed army.

For the sake of convenience, DV comes with:

1 Chaos Lord with power sword and plasma pistol

1 aspiring champion

6 chosen

1 Hellbrute with Multi-melta and power fist.

20 cultists.

Total is 421 points. How should I build off of this? I've been told that most games are 1,500 points, so I guess I'll aim for that at this point.

I think I want to get Typhus.
As for Typhus, is he good? Are plague zombies good?

"Show me where it says that in the codex!" said Learchus.
"You know brother that I cannot." said Uriel.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

If you are going for a Nurgle CSM army then you might want to take a look at this:

obj: Vp if 3+ your units on enemy table half; make 7 FnP rolls; kill unit w/weapon or psychic power using poisoned; name a IC and VP if he lives; D3Vp if you control EXACTLY 3 obj; kill 7 models (improves)
Access to full discipline of Nurgle 6 + primaris

^This is the new Death Guard Legion rules which you will want if you are running a Nurgle army.

So what is normally in a good Nurgle army?
-Plague Marines/Nurgle CSM
-Rhinos (for the PM/CSM)
-Typhus
-Plague Zombies
-Bikes
-Daemon prince

Nurgle is a very tough and resiliant army, you should make use of their ability to absorb enemy fire and keep moving.

The quoted post is a bit messy. I can't tell what applies to what.

Death Guard Legion rules

In order to be a Death Guard detachment you must follow these guidelines:
Typhus is the only unique character; only mark of Nurgle; All units gain VotLW for free; DP need Mark Nurgle; psykers can take all their powers from the Nurgle discipline

Legion tactics:
Gift of Nurgle - All units with VotLW gain fearless & FnP but -1 initiative (doesn’t affect Typhus or Plague marines)
Inexorable Advance - All units with VotLW get relentless
Lords of Plague Host - Plague Marines are troops

Warlord Traits: FnP, IWND, +1 W, Eternal warrior, improves Poison by 1, units with in 7” get contagion

Relics:
Poison 2+ weapon
Poison 2+ blast gun
Poison 2+ staff
Give units fear
Give a character fear, FnP & D3 cultists come back to life
AP3 poison 4+ daemon weapon

Army rules:
Disgustingly Resilient - re-roll FnP rolls of 1
Cloud of Flies: ranged hits more than 18” away give you stealth rule for resolving attack

Detachment
core: Chaos warband, Plague Colony (Typhus + 3-7 plague marines—gain fear & enemy units w/in7” reduce I & WS by 1 in fight phase, if 7 plague marines add -1 Toughness to that)
command: Lord of Legion
aux: Lost and the Damned + 8

Tactical Objectives: Vp if 3+ your units on enemy table half
Make 7 FnP rolls
Kill unit w/weapon or psychic power using poisoned
Name an IC and VP if he lives
D3Vp if you control EXACTLY 3 obj
kill 7 models (improves)

Access to full discipline of Nurgle 6 + primaris

VeteranNoob was writing up the rules for 9 legions when he wrote this so it was a bit rushed, but props to him for staying up in order to sate our hunger for leaks.

By Nurgle CSM, do you mean that as an alternative name for the Plague Marines or do you mean CSM with the Mark of Nurgle?

I mean CSM with mark of Nurgle. In a death guard detachment they basically become plague marines vut cheaper, the only reason you would take plague marines over regular marines in a DG army is for 2 special weapons per 5 men.

Can Plague Marines be used instead of CSM with mark of Nurgle to satisfy the 2-6 CSM requirement of the Chaos Warband? I see the ruling for Typhus that says that PM are troop choices instead of elite. Is there a difference between the troop types from the FOC in the BRB and the newer detachments which give you a specific unit name?

Unfortunately, no. If you opt for the warband, you will need at least two units of CSM.

When specific requirements are given (for example: at least 2 units of CSM in the warband), then you have to adhere to these specifics in order to fulfill requirements for the formation. So, this could be construed as a difference, if you will. Outside of that, any unit labelled as 'troops' would fulfill the CAD requirement (in your specific case: CSM, Plague Marines, or Cultists).

It's a bit of a tangled web, for sure.

Thank you for the information! Am I correct in thinking then that the only way to have actual plague marines for the Deathguard Vectorium is via Plague Colony?

I am currently working on building my first army from the DV set as the OP has suggested. I have started painting the Helbrute and Chosen, but I suspect I will not use them much if I get to where I want to be with Deathguard Vectorium. So far I have Typhus and Plague Marines, and incoming Bikes, Terminators, and a Rhino.
