Hi there all,
I’m new here. I’ve played loads of table top games but have never played ANY Middle Earth.
Just getting started and have acquired 51 plastic rivendell warriors (28 with hand and a half blades and 23 with bows).
I’ve started to convert some of the swordsmen to carry shields and am curious, how many should I convert? How many should I convert to carry spears (I have an additional three metal ones) and how many should I keep with bows. I understand that theres a bow limit of 1/3rd of the army, so 23 is too many.

Any suggestions are welcome!
Thank you in advance.

Here’s a picture of some of the progress on the conversions. I’m thinking about starting with just 8 of them?

Sadly I'm not overly familiar with Rivendell, but I like what you've done so far with the conversions.

I feel like maybe six with spears would be a good start? You've got a good number of figures to mess around with, so that's a plus.

Thanks for the reply krijthebold!
You’re right, there are quite a few models here that I could edit.
I was thinking about painting up 12 bows, 8 swords, 8 sword and shield and 8 spear and shield.
That would leave me with enough models left over to convert as needed.
I know you said you weren’t familiar with Rivendell, but do you think a banner and a horn would be worth while to convert up while I’m at it? Also, a captain for a cheap hero option?
The heros U currently have are Gil Galad, Elrond and the twins. Would a generic captain be good to have on hand?

Thanks,

Banners are really good for elves as you want as many chances as possible to roll that 6 which wins combats against all but the scariest things out there.

Generic captains are worth having. Having Might stores on non beatsticks is nice so Glorfindel, Gil Galad etc can use theirs for fighting. Winning the movement game is pretty important for Rivendell (though I play Knight heavy )

Eldarain, thanks for the info!
I just read the rules for duels last night and the whole dice off thing makes combat seem very swingy.
Unless I’m understanding things incorrectly, having a high fight value only helps you out in the event of a tie. So like a four point goblin with a single attack is just as likely to beat an elf in a duel as Gundabad Berserker?
I suppose though that I need to continue reading and actually play to sort this all out.

In terms of building my force, what is your opinion on 12 bow, 8 sword, 8 shield and 8 spear and shield? Should this give me enough variety? Also, how many banners should I make?

Thanks

People put shields on their archers and use the special shielding option to win fights.

You can put shields on your spears as being an elite force it might be hard to keep them out of direct combat. Though as typically the second rank of your line that is the first place to look if freeing up points.

As Banners can be passed off when the soldier is killed you don't need many. I'd say 2 on foot to affect as much as possible and 1 mounted if you expand into cavalry.

Ok great thanks!
I’ll be putting a fair amount of shields out there then and build at most two banners.
I’d imagine most of the games I’ll be playing will be small ones so I think I’ll make this army project much smaller to start with. Get enough models painted for about 500 points and get some games under my belt before I proceed with any other conversions.

I really appreciate the advise guys! Thank you!

Correct. But with only rolling D6s ties will happen a lot. Plus you should remember that you'll be outnumbered in most fights so you'll probably be throwing 1-2 dice vs 2-3 most of the time.
