Subject: Why do image attachment previews look so blurry?

Just wanted to ask about this, its been bothering me for a long time now.. Fullsize image attachments look as expected, but the previews look really blurry, to the point of annoyance. Is the forum image downsampling algorithm from 1990 or something?
Another thing I've noticed, some of the images in certain threads look wayy crispier, even without clicking on them.. are those images being hosted from another source, or why are they so much sharper looking than everything else?
I wouldn't bother to bring this up otherwise, but miniatures are such a visual medium, and I don't like the idea that I need to click on every image I run across, just to be able to see the thing in its proper sharpness..
Thanks

One part of it might just be that some images aren't as big as others. Some phones and cameras are now taking massive photos - 5K and more - on the longest side and when people upload that its just vastly bigger than you need online.
Also this might be impacted by your browser choice and if you're on mobile or pc

I'm on Safari iOS for most of the time, but this sort of blurry image downsampling doesn't hapoen with other sites

The 2nd ones are hosted on external size.
And make reading thread pita in mobile as a) it takes huge amount of space forcing to scroll back and forth B) slows opening page.

Guess I'll need to set up external image hosting one of these days then. Image resolution itself doesn't need to be humongous, there is a sweet spot where definition is crisp enough while things still remaining somewhat mobile friendly (ex webdesigner hat on)
I mean, even the avatar picts on this board look really blurry..
EDIT: ahh but of course! That must be it, the bitmaps output from the site server are probably super lo res and what actually happens is, they get enlarged in my browser, via CSS. no wonder it all looks so undefined

I use an otherwise unused imgur account for attaching anything to dakka. It's faster to use than dakka's own ancient magic and works better in pretty much every way.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

Imgur is indeed still free and what I use right now.
Yep Photobucket sent me emails that I'd lose my account if I didn't pay - thing is I stopped using it ages ago when they started with image upload limits and pay requirements and such before.

Alrighty, imgur it'll be for me in the future then! I know this will mean the picts from my blogs will evaporate in time (all image hosting sites eventually reach EOL, as history of WWW proves), but the CSS upscaled previews on Dakka just look so unsightly on my browser..
I'd reckon a standard resolution of 1920 x 1080 / 72DPI oughta not clobber users' browsers to a crawl..?

yes, imgur is free, but now each image post is limit to 50 images if you want to publicize it, so you may have to do some organization like me here:

Got me a shiny new imgur account, how do I attach picts uploaded there into my posts? Do the images need to be public for them to work?
EDIT: Got it! disregard this msg..
