So I'm doing a bag hunt* ** and one thing I find annoying is that I can find loads of reviews talking about empty bags. And I can find a good few talking about what models people do or would like to put into bags - but honestly far fewer "here's my bag; here's my models, here's my models in the bag. Ergo a real world showing of what bags can hold - esp for magnetic bags and such. I can measure things with a ruler, but a visual display is so much more engaging to grasp what people are doing with bags - esp these days with GW pushing a lot of medium and large size models out into the market which fast make a lot of traditional bags fairly useless because they fill up so fast you need two or three.

** right now my choice looks like a PACK 1520 for Tyranids. Just because the 720 looks like it would be great for an AoS army or an infantry heavy army; but big bugs would fill it up fast

Old pic is old, but here is my Kaiser 3 and a bunch of spare boxes with foam. The bag holds 3 “units” with the smaller boxes being 1 each and the bigger ones being 1.5



I’ve since picked up a Kaiser 2, which only holds 2 units, as 3 is overkill for most lists. A lot depends on specific units. Things like the stormraven or drop pods just don’t pack well. But you could cram like 8 rhinos and ~100 small infantry into one box. Very list dependent.

In general I’m a big fan of KR Multicase

For my nids I decided to go magnets. As much as I love KR, all the stabby bits and scything talons did not seem like they would fit nicely into little foam squares.


Not happy with the grip of magnets of the rubberized magnetic sheets, so in the process of upgrading to steel. Krom be praised!



Edit:
To add a little context to the KR pic, with the exception of the stormraven tray, all the foam is 1/2 width. The first row is 1/4 hight, next is 1/3rd, 1/2 (double of those) 2/3rds, 3/4th and then full depth all the way in the back. You can mix and match the foam into the boxes, depending on what’s in the list.

100% recommend both of these.

Here I have been spending years building my first (and probably the only) serious 40K/30K army, and never did I pause to think I'd need some sort of carrying case for everything once it's in a gameworthy state! KT21 has indeed spoiled me, you only need a crusty cardboard box for taking a team into games with..

I'll be sure to look into these things as well, thanks! Are the foam trays in this case brand the type which can be easily reconfigured?

KR trays are real easy to swap around. The hardest parts are remembering which thickness everything is, and trying to figure out which trays you need to use if you have options.

Yeah but the market has moved in a few years and being aware of other options is good. I've already seen a couple of competing options that appear to be as expensive/bit cheaper but which have clear fronts to them which can be an attractive feature in terms of seeing what's inside without having to open it all up.

Though I think in general BF might have the edge esp as I can zip a 270 or so with foam to the top/bottom of either back for those models that I don't want to/can't transport on a magnet sheet (eg big flying models)

Where'd you get the plastic cases of varying depths? I've been moving away from foam trays to magnetic bases and steel trays (foam takes to long for set up, and I've damaged too many minis in those #$!&%* trays) but I haven't found a great, transportable solution yet. I've seen some of these stackable Steralite boxes, but none with these varying depths that you have.

These are "Really Useful Boxes", 3 of the 4 liter and one 9 liter boxes. Stack nicely with the same footprint (roughly 8.5” x 12”) and good straight vertical sides. Not the cheapest plastic box out there, but recommended by a lot of the tutorials for the build your own magnet cases.

As said, nearly every video or guide you'll see about magnetising boxes for model storage and transport seems to use Really Useful Boxes:

Huh. I just tried adding a 4L to cart and seeing how much it would cost to ship; was like $25 bucks S&H. Might have clicked the wrong place; it was before full caffeination.

I’m going to buy another batch of boxes once the new year hits. I’ll see if it’s cheeper to get them straight from the source, or with free shipping.

While you're in there, the modular trolley/racks they do are handy. I bought boxes with rack parts for 14 boxes, some as drawers. If you can get coloured boxes, it makes sorting your stuff a lot easier too.

Right now I just use them for my tyranids. No need to sort things out. I was thinking about setting up my nighthaunts, so good idea for the future.

Might as well give a shout to Cobalt Keep's magnetic accessories line, which includes magnetized bases. They fit into the CK painting hilts, as well as display stands.

Not sure if the pricing justifies the bases if you're only going to put them in a case for transport, though.

I just use plano boxes and the occasional cotton squares, although most of my collection isn't multipiece hard plastic with cool but hard to store bits sticking out.

Early impressions of a Battleform 720:

I got the version with fixed side pockets rather than molly on the side since I figured if I got the molly I'd have to shell out more just to get pockets anyway. So might as well have them built in.

Side pockets - these are good and the padding on the outer side is thick. They are big enough to just hold a KR Multicase Accessory Cast (just). So that's a big plus from me as I use one as my dice tray during games and to hold a bunch of dice and counters.

The front pocket for books I wish had some more room to its sides, it can just hold a BRB and that's it. Some slack on the sides and perhaps a zipper to expand them or such would have been nice for a bit more optional room.

Shoulder Strap is well made ,but I wish it were longer so you could easily do over the shoulder and across the body. The grip-pad on the strap is neat and would work for winter/ but you wouldn't want it on a thin shirt in mid-summer. However its there to hold firm to your clothing and works well for that duty.

Build quality is great, its durable; firm and feels well made.

I will expand the back section, which has molly, with their largest pocket to give me more book room. It will also help balance the case out a bit when its got a rulebook in the front and another book in the back.

With one side pocket for dice and another spare for tape measure and other things its a good all-in-one case.

I'll update with pictures once I've actually got models onto some proper magnets to show off the internal storage as well on the Magna-Racks.
