Hey all, I am trying to find a primer that is equivalent to mechanicus grey and was wondering if a charcoal grey would work or if it would be a different shade.

Mechanicus grey is a curious tone.. IIRC only the rattlecan variety is perfectly "gray", the paint pot varieties often seem to contain a slight green tint to them, so YMMV

From what I've read and my experience, it's actually the primer that's greenish and the paint pots that are a true grey.

Having used can and bottle recently, I’d say any colour discrepancy has been resolved. And yeah, very slight bluish/green tone to it.

I suppose its possible they sorted out the colour discrepancies. Anyways, for me personally, Mech. Std grey is not good, too much tinted from neutral grey, I ended up preferring AK11423 Field Grey base #2 for my Kriegers. AK11018 Neutral Grey is the one you want though if you absolutely insist on a "pure" gray (ie only mixed from white and black)
Also, on the subject on grayscales, the MIG Ammo Greyscale Paint set deserves a mention. I should actually buy one come to think of it!

Colour Forge makes a neutral grey primer called "Standard Grey" that is a color match with Mechanicus Standard Grey from the pot.

Spray cans have worked well under Contrast-a-like for me. But of course, any paint is gonna be of difference use (including no use) to different painters.

Really? This is absolutely not the case with me using current new cans of Mechanicus Standard Grey and pots of Mechanicus Standard Grey. It's driving me nuts how this has been going on for by my measure since the inception of the spray.
The spray of Mechanicus Standard Grey is basically a blue-grey or a teal-grey even, it's far, far from being a neutral grey. It's close to Stegadon Scale Green or Thunderhawk Blue.
How are you guys getting neutral greys out of your spray Mechanicus Standard Grey?

Shaking it a lot and spraying only at the witching hour seems to get it neutral grey.

There's still a big discrepancy between the primer and the pot, even the more recent tutorials by GW that love to use the primer as a starting point make note that the colours do not match, but that it still makes for an awesome neutral basecoat to work off of.

In some of their videos they recommend that you do that (especially with black) as the spray and the pot will have a different finish.

Thank you for the responses, I am currently priming with a rust-oleum flat grey and I am looking for something that is a hair darker, when I use the mechanicus grey it is maybe one shade darker and stands out some. Trying to save a step and have the primer act as my base coat as well.
