Me and my friend are new to the game and I need some help with ideas. He's decided that for our first 1000 point game he's going to bring a shard of the nigtbringer c'tan. I've spend some time googling for strats to help deal with it, and I've seen tons of post saying volume of fire is the way to go. Right now I've got 3 units of 10 sternguard veterans. Is this silly? I feel like other than his c'tan, the vets plus the rest of my list will hold up really well.

I play a lot of 1000 point games and I've found that often, the best way to deal with a big threat like a C'Tan or a Primarch is sometimes to just ignore it.

If you're able to mitigate The Nightbringer's damage and deal with the rest of your opponent's army, there's only so much the Nightbringer can do. It's not that fast of a unit, so having some Outriders, Jump Infantry, Transports, of move, shoot, move units to run around that it just won't be able to catch could serve you very well.

It's hard to say beyond that without knowing what models you have to work with.

I deal with a Nightbringer in 1k games by pumping Lethal and Sustained Hits into it.

A ten man unit of Intercessors, Fire Discipline Lieutenant, an Ancient, and a gatling Repulsor, getting a good barrage on it, and then charging in, was able to do simply enough D1 hits to make it's "half damage" effect pointless.

I found that relying on high damage weapons just wasn't cutting it, so I swamped it with weight of fire.

Smudge makes a good point. Since the Nightbringer only has a 4+ save, it's mostly protected by the fact that it's an invul, it's 5+ FNP, and that it takes half damage. If you can throw enough D1 Lethal hits at it, it will go down to weight of fire.

How do you feel about so many sternguards tho? 30 seems like a lot to me but I have good reasons to keep transports to a minimum due to his other units
