1st Éadrom Talamh, the ‘Floating Bees’

Author Information

Hey I'm an Aussie guy bulling his way through uni, and I love rambling and making stuff up. Hence the following. Also, after grammatical advice from someone who actually knows gaelic, it is apparently Talaimh Éadroim, not what I initially had. But I haven't yet worked out how to change the title...

The Floating Bees

The 1st Talaimh Éadroim, nicknamed the Floating Bees, are my Guard army. I bought a few tanks when I was starting out before I decided I'd rather go airborne, and since then I have drifted back to a more hybrid list between foot and airborne.

=== Planet of Origin ===

The 'Bees' hail from a very small planet, where tall mountains have uniquely formed into spires and thick forests lie at their base. There are no seas on the planet, a result of a mad governor’s desire for a ‘green carpet to gaze upon’, while the planet was designated Strambán Talamh. A side effect from the massive land changes this governor brought about is the peculiar effect which this had on the gravity of the planet, effects which led to the planet’s name being officially changed to Talaimh Éadroim. At the snow line, the gravity dramatically shifts from a regular, almost Old Earth level of gravity at forest level to a drastically reduced level of gravity in the spires. This effect becomes more significant the higher one goes, and space-faring ships are in fact able to engage themselves to tallest spires without being caught in the gravity of the planet. This queer gravity has lead to the citizens of this planet developing in two different ways. Those who grow up below the snow line tend to live there, becoming used to the forest and the thriving industry in unique woods which Talaimh Éadroim is famous for. Those who are raised in the spire mountains become adept at working in the odd gravity of their mountainous homes. They service the shipyards which have spread out from the peaks of the spires, and in doing so develop skills in the use of atmospheric and void-sealed craft for use outside of the atmosphere.

=== Regimental Organization ===

The Guard regiments raised from Talaimh Éadroim have two distinctive halves. The first is those men recruited from the lowlands. These men are experts in conflicts in forested terrain, masters of stealth and tracking. They have limited armour support, as there are very few factories on the planet, and the forest is not the best terrain for armoured spearheads. The men recruited from the spire mountains approach warfare in a different way. They carry out manoeuvre warfare at an expert level, dropping from the sky in valkyries and vendettas, or simply on grav chutes, to engage the enemy at close quarters before disengaging from the contact, either by combat skimmer or the Mark II Standard Issue Boot. Since their participation in the cleansing of their planet of the Chaos which had taken root in the governor’s office, the 'Bees' have been seconded to the Inquisition many times. This has lead to them painting a gold Inquisition symbol on a black field on their left shoulder pads.

=== Famous Battles ===

Battle for Talaimh Éadroim. Otherwise known as the brón or the doilíos.

Years before the formation of the 1st Talaimh Éadroim Regiment, their world was riven by strife. If a scribe was to ask a citizen of this world about those times they would be met with a stoney silence, a wall barring the inquisitive from all information about the shame these people carry because of this history. The recorded histories of the world are similarly impossible to access regarding this time, and it is only in the songs of the world that it can be found, referred to as either the brón or the doilíos. And these songs are not sung with off worlders present.

If one was to petition the Holy Ordos for access to their records of the incidents, or even more unlikely be sung the songs of Talaimh Éadroim by a native, they would learn not only the truth behind this world’s shame, but would also come to understand why the world is one of the most devout in the sector. The story begins with the last Imperial governor of the world.

Governor Bómánta was already an old man when the first regiment of his planet was called into action during a Chaos incursion in another part of the subsector. His son led them into battle, and they fought well for a time, until, on a blasted field on an unnamed planet, they were killed almost to a man. The survivors returned to Talaimh Éadroim, but unknown to the masses who cheered their return, they carried a dark passenger. They had sold their souls to escape the fates of their brothers in arms, and it was this corrupt seed that they spread to many parts of society upon their return. Some joined the PDF as advisors at several levels, spreading their influence throughout the command structure and the rank and file, as well as the Administratum and the Imperial Navy ships in permanent orbit around the planet. Finally, the governor’s son returned to his father and began to exert his malign influence at the highest level of governance.

As the fingers of darkness wormed their way into the governor’s mind, his sanity began to fray. Increasingly confusing and contradictory edicts were issued from his office, giving the PDF increased authority and limiting the amount of off world trade until it ceased completely. After isolating the world from traders and the like, the governor carried out his largest project so far. He wished to gaze upon a field of green when he looked out from his spire, and so he made his first bargain with the gods that his son had revealed to him. All they wanted in trade were souls. The souls of every member of the Astropathica present on the planet, and the members of the Navis Nobilite in orbit around the planet.

Convening a ‘council of seers’ in his audience room, these poor men and women gathered, unknowing of their imminent fate. Upon arrival they received what they thought to be a benediction drawn on their cheeks in oil. After they had all arrived in the chamber, the doors were locked behind them. Murmurs of confusion turned to shouts of fear, and then screams of terror as first armed men emerged on the balconies, and glyphs of the chaos gods were unmasked around the room, stitched from the flesh of the personal astropaths of the governor, their screaming faces still howling from the centre of the sigils. What the terrified innocents thought to be glyphs of benediction were in fact marks of chaos, which burned into their flesh and tore their souls from their bodies.

As soon as the gods were sated, grass and trees immediately began to bloom, supplanting homes of families in the vales and destroying the temples of the emperor on the planet’s surface. The heretics of the governor’s office set to defacing the shrines throughout the spires, and suppressing all opposition to this action.
