Malgrimace's army

Full Army Photo

Why I Started This Army

I began playing Warhammer 40,000 when I was around 9-10 years old. I was introduced to it by a friend of mine who's brother went on to be a store manager, and he gave me my first ever model, a Space Marine. This was during second edition, or around 1994, and over the next few years I raised many different armies including Ultramarines, Imperial Guard, Chaos and Orks. As I got a little older, I grew away from the hobby and many of the models were sold off or left in the attic to be forgotten. A couple of months ago, my work friends convinced me to start playing again and initially I had began a Tau army, but then I found a carry case with a few Space Wolf models which had been given to me by a friend to sell on Ebay and after reading into their background I fell in love with them.

There's a mix of old and new models in the army, such as Ulrick and Bjorn, which I believe were purchased shortly after their initial release. There are some of the 1997 Space Wolves and also two boxes of the 2009 Space Wolves. The main core of the army is built around four Grey Hunter squads, each one is a mixture of different aged models. I also bought the Assault on Black Reach (AoBR) starter set, with all the Marines converted into Space Wolves using parts from my bits box.

My main enjoyment comes from converting and assembling the models and Wolves gave me chance to try new techniques; being the first time I've ever used Green Stuff for more then just filling holes and such forth. Although I've only really made pelts and wolf necklaces, I'm hoping to put these skills to further use on future models.

Army List

HQ

Wolf Lord - converted from the AoBR set. He's deliberately modelled so that I can use him as Ragnar Blackmane in larger games.

Rune Priest - the single best HQ choice, always taken with a Seeker of the Slain to prevent the enemy from infiltrating properly. I like to use Living Lightning and choose my second ability based upon the opponents I'm facing.

Wolf Priest - fairly good for leading Blood Claws (the re-rolling misses is good due to their low Weapon Skill)

Elites

2 Dreadnaughts - one is Bjorn the Fell Handed, the other is a converted Dread from the AoBR boxed set.

5 Wolf Scouts - conversions of the 1 piece 1997 generic scout models. I hear they're useful to deploying in the opponents deployment zone, forcing him to split his forces.

1 Iron Priest

10 Wolf Guard in Terminator armour - 5 are conversions from the AoBR set. I sometimes use one of these as a Wolf Lord. 2 have Runeblades, 1 assault cannon + chainfist, 4 with wolf claws.

4 Wolf Guard in Power armour - all with powerfists and combimeltas, these are used to lead my Grey Hunters

Lone Wolf with Thunder Hammer and Stormshield - charge him in and try and take out something big, or hold up a unit for a couple of turns.

Troops

4 units of 9 Grey hunters - each squad has a powerfist and a special weapon (meltaguns and plasma guns) - 9 of these are AoBR conversions

12 Bloodclaws

Fast Attack

5 Sky Claws

1 Landspeeder Typhoon with Multi Melta

Heavy Support

6 Long Fangs - although they have a combination of weapons, I'll be replacing them all with Missile Launchers as time goes on as these are the best weapons for Long Fangs.

Landraider Crusader - I use this mainly as a dedicated transport for the Wolf Guard in larger games.

What I would like to add

Rhino tanks to get my Grey Hunters from point A to B. This is why the Grey Hunters all have 9 men in them, as with their Wolf Guard escorts, they obviously number 10.

Razorback for my Long Fangs to help them get around bigger battlefields a little easier rather then just confining them in one place.

3 Missile Launchers for my Long Fangs.

Extra Fenris Wolves to use as a screen or for wound allocation for the characters able to take them.

Combimelta and Melta guns. Best choices for Wolf Guard and Grey Hunter units - especially after seeing a 5 point melta gun scrapping a Death Company Dread
