Why I Started This Army
The Eldar of Athel Loren army started about eighteen months ago. But, before I continue there are a few things to keep in mind:
- I definitely fall into the “hobbyist” side of 40k. Time spent assembling, converting, and painting greatly outnumbers the time spent playing. Thus when choosing which models/units to use enjoyment of creating takes precedence over game effectiveness.
- The Eldar model range holds very little “hobbyist” interest for me.
- Many people find Warhammer Fantasy Battles to be a fun, engaging, tactical table-top war game; however, I am not among them.
Okay, moving on … so I had recently lost a game to a Tri-Falcon Flying Circus army and decided to try my hand at Eldar. Not wanting to use Falcons or any typical power game list a rough draft of my current army was devised. After looking at what models would be involved and deciding that the models held no interest the project was put on hold.
A few weeks latter while looking for my Eldar codex I came across a Wood Elf army book (the current version). I started thumbing through it and thought, “Now there is an army I would like to paint”. Then the idea struck me. Eldar … Wood Elves … Wood Eldar. It was a win-win scenario. Here were a bunch of models that would be fun to convert, assemble, and paint than I could use them as an Eldar army to play 40k!
Painting Method
basecoat black
heavy drybrush of vallejo game color (vgc) sick blue (the purpleish dark blue)
drybrush vgc sombre grey
drybrush/ paint vgc ghost grey
paint/ line vgc white
watered down purple ink covering entire model (don't recall exact mix, but leaned towards light purplish water)
highlight vgc ghost grey
highlight vgc white
testors dull coat varnish
While applying layers keep in mind direction "moonlight" is hitting model. The areas closer to the light should be brighter than those farther away. It is basically over-highlighting areas of the model. In my case the light source was from the above, slightly in front and right. The backs of the models are mostly black. I tried to imagine a line of moonlight running up from the model's left foot to the top of its head. This is the brightest part everything fads to black from the "line".
