More About Dakka

DakkaDakka - Warhammer, 40k, Warmachine and Flames of War Community.

DakkaDakka is a large, independent wargaming community that features discussion, tutorials and images for many games.

Warhammer 40,000

Our warhammer 40k forums are among our most popular. They have been operating the longest and contain discussion about every facet of warhammer 40k from tactics and army lists to background and upcoming releases.

Warhammer Fantasy

The Warhammer Fantasy Battle Forums are consistently increasing in popularity and are almost on a par with our 40k forums covering the same large range of content with advice from some of the best tacticians the world has to offer.

Warmachine and Hordes

Dakka now has one of the largest Warmachine and Hordes forums on the web, and has a huge range of Warmachine Pictures in our gallery.

Flames of War

Flames of War and other historical games are growing in popularity here on dakka and we invite anyone to join in and discuss them in detail. As flames of war grows more popular, Dakka's coverage will only increase. Be sure to check out the Flames of War gallery to see some inspiring stuff.

Dakka Features

Dakka is a big site with a lot to explore. Here we highlight some of our more interesting features:

Wargaming Gallery

The dakka gallery is one of the largest wargaming galleries in the world and has a huge range of tagged miniatures from many game systems. From flames of war to Maelstrom's Edge, and of course 40k. You can vote on images (like using hot-or-not), and use our advanced gallery search engine to find exactly what you are looking for, be it space marines, orks, cryx or Dark Elves!

Forums

The dakka forums are growing faster and faster and are the bread and butter of the website. They still maintain quality and a fair level of freedom compared to many other forums. Our most popular forum is News and Rumours, but Dakka Discussions and 40k army lists are very popular too. There are some important rules to consider (no spam, no swearing, no piracy) but everybody gets on well enough thanks to our great moderation team.

Articles

The dakka wargaming articles are run on a wiki (like wikipedia). We have a huge range of wargaming articles covering everything from tactica to modeling and painting and even some great funny stuff. If you are bored and want to have the equivalent of dozens of magazines to read then head over to the main articles page and start clicking around. Because it is a wiki, anybody can hop in and click the 'edit' tab at the top of the page, so if you have anything to add or just see some typos or bad grammar then you can help make it better for everyone.

Army Profiles

Dakka's army profiles are a throwback to the very earliest version of dakka from the late 1990s, where various armies were highlighted in detail. Our army profiles section now contains many armies from different game systems with in depth photographs, army lists and explanations of their signifigance from their owners.

Sponsor Press Release:
Thornvale City Kickstarter

Posted: 2025-12-11 20:00:00

Would you like to have an entire city for your wargames without spending hours designing terrain?

Davale Games is on Kickstarter with Thornvale City, a fully modular 3D city for 28–32 mm scale that was funded in just 40 minutes and has already passed 460% funding!

The project is organized into two main routes: Civil and Military, featuring shipyards, walls, barracks, markets, palaces, towers. With both standard and ruined versions, you can represent anything from a living city to a brutal siege. All pieces are modular, so you can build streets, plazas, ports and fortified districts exactly how you want them.

For those who want to go all-in on the full city, there’s a particularly good-value pledge: for €69 you get both routes, all city buildings and all content unlocked during the campaign. The total original value of the set is €346, which means you’re saving around 80% off the final price!

The campaign has already started unlocking Stretch Goals and Bonus Items (such as the destroyed shipyard, tree sets and various props), with files prepared for both FDM and resin printing.

If you’re into printable terrain and detail-packed tables, you might want to take a look at all the modules and renders here.

Dakka Forum: Which 40k Edition had the best Psychic representation from a gameplay/fun perspective?

Personally, I feel psychic powers peaked in 8th/9th Edition. They were straightforward to understand. They felt powerful when you executed them, but they had major risks and enemy psykers can make them unreliable. Both Deny the Witch and Perils from the Warp also worked well both crunch-wise and fluff-wise. Now in 10th Edition, Psykers just feel like glorified special shooters that are bad against a small minority of units. I haven't played any edition before 8th, but from what I read, 1st and 2nd Edition psychic powers were way too long and complicated. 3rd-7th Edition were alright but could also be often clunky.

Here's a summary of the different psychic phases by Gemini:

Psychic powers in Warhammer 40,000 have undergone more mechanical re-inventions than almost any other part of the game. They have shifted from a "mini-game within a game" to a dedicated phase, and finally into integrated abilities.
1st Edition

In the first edition, 40k was more of a narrative RPG than a competitive wargame.

The System: Psykers had a "Mastery Level" (1 to 4) and used Psychic Points.
How it Worked: Each power cost a certain number of points to manifest. If you had the points, you could use the power.
Flavor: There were dozens of niche powers (like "Telekinesis" to move objects or "Molecular Agitation" to heat armor). It was complex, slow, and flavor-heavy.
2nd Edition: The Card Game (1993)

This edition is famous (or infamous) for the Warp Deck.

The System: Psychic powers were resolved in a dedicated phase using a deck of cards.
How it Worked: Players drew cards to create a "hand" of Warp energy. You spent cards to cast spells, while the opponent could play "Nullify" cards to cancel them.
Risk: This was the first time "Perils of the Warp" became a major threat—drawing the wrong card could literally suck your psyker into Hell.
3rd, 4th, and 5th Edition: The ...

Dakka Forum: Mad Doc’s 2026 Hobby Extravaganza

How do!

Right, I really really mean it this time. Even got a proper hobby room and everything! 2026 is the year I get back on the Hobby Horse and ride it into the sunset.

2024 was a great success until the sudden and unexpected death of my Dad, which put a real downer on things.

2025 I was dealing with grief, and the purchase of my forever home, so got relatively little hobby done due to sustained life upheavel and not one, but two depressive episodes.

But in 2026? I think I’m looking at plain sailing. Should be moving to a more rewarding and less stressful workstream professionally, which helps balance the mental humours and keeps the head weasels from their scurrying. And I’ve got my hobby/crafting room more or less as I want it. So I’ve about as few barriers to regular hobby sessions as I think can be expected. Heck, I’ve even got a private rear garden, not over looked by an adult care home, where I can big things sprayed nice and quick once the weather brightens up (probably around March/April).

As with 2024? I’m gonna kick off with my Epic Scale treasures. They’re quick to paint, and don’t take much to get a decent finish on. So they’re ideal in my opinion for building up hobby stamina, and getting further motivation as your results show really quick.

From there, I’ll likely alternate between 28mm Heresy and Necromunda. Got plenty of both to get through. So much I may need a third display cabinet.

And when I’ve got all that done? There’s still my complete HeroQuest collection to pile through.

Is gonna be a busy one!
