For those of you who are unaware, Mantic Games is a new-ish miniature company that has unleashed a fantastic range of Fantasy miniatures in their Kings of War line. So far they've released miniatures for two army types, the Elves and Undead. If you're a fan of fantasy miniatures and you haven't checked out the models Mantic's website yet, then you're doing yourself a supreme disservice.
While I was at Adepticon this March I got a chance to meet Ronnie, the head honcho over at Mantic. Besides being a fantastically nice guy and showing me the ingenious way they package their miniatures (the package the minis are sold in also doubles as a protective carrying case which is designed to work seamlessly with their line of tote bags!), we talked about some great ways to get the Dakka community involved with Mantic and vice-versa. This contest is the beautiful fruit of that conversation.
Mantic's Name A Dwarf and Win a Deal Contest!
Mantic Games will be launching its third plastic army in June - The Dwarves - and we need your help!
We have a great name for the core unit - The IronClads (heavily armoured Dwarf troopers armed and ready for battle). But we don't have a the perfect name (yet!) for the troops armed with blackpowder rifles and crossbows - and that's where you, the Dakka community comes in! The best idea we've come up with so far is Sharpshooters - and that just doesn't feel very Dwarfish!
This new set you will allow players to build either option (crossbow or rifle) for every trooper, so no matter what game system you play, you will be able to field your Dwarf troopers with your ideal weapon combos.
To get your creative juices flowing we have attached the concept art for the models and some painted 3-ups (we don't have the final plastics yet - they are currently being tooled).
So here's what you need to do: post your suggested name for the unit here in this thread on Dakka, and at the end of the contest we will pick our favorite name and use it for the final release.
Not only will the winner be getting the massive respect of having a unit of miniatures forever carrying their name, but we'll also send the winner a 'Kings of War' premium army deal which retails for $179 along with a Mantic Messenger Bag...all sent to your home free of charge!
I hope these 'Exclusive to Dakka' photos of the new Dwarves offer some inspiration, and perhaps even get you excited about owning a huge army of these fellas - available soon at unbelievable prices -- just $60 for 40 troops and 2 Warmachines!!!
Find out more at:

OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES
1) To make your entry, just post it right into this very thread. Its just that easy! You can even make as many entries as you'd like. Not a current member of Dakka? No problem, just click on the Join Us! link at the top of the page and you can become a member in just a couple easy steps.
2) You can keep posting as many submissions as you'd like in this thread until 11:59pm (GMT) on May 25th.
WARNING: If you edit one of your entry posts in this thread, all entries in that post will count as having been submitted at the date/time of your most recent edit (meaning if someone posted the same thing as you 3 pages later but you edit your post after that, they'll count as having submitted the entry before you). So the moral of the story is: Don't edit your posts in this thread, just add another post later in the thread if you think of another entry!
3) The winner will be picked by Mantic Games and will be announced here on Dakka* shortly after the contest ends on May 25th (it may take a day or two to sort through all the last entires).
*If you don't check Dakka on a regular basis, please take a moment to make sure that the email address in your dakka account is current as we will be contacting the winners via email and Dakka private message and if you don't get the email you may miss your chance to collect your prize!
So c'mon Dakka community, get your thinking caps on and start posting, because Dwarves need a name badly (terrible Gauntlet reference)!

dwarven ale-eyes.
The dwarves have always been a race whose love of gunpowder equalled the thingling's love for thier firewood. However, after the catastrophic battle of battle of deeping ridge the dwarves knew something was amiss.
You see, dwarves are a proud people, and don't take lightly to an enemy ripping through thier ranks with superior firepower. So when the pointy eared fiends had slaughtered proud king Balor Itonhelm the dwarven engineers quickly set about finding a way to counter the elven bolt throwers.
To this end, the engineers worked in tandem with the brewers guild and the high clan councils to create a brew that would sharpen the sight and quicken the senses of thier warriors armed with the traditional dwarf ranged weaponry ( thunder-spitter handguns and stoneshot crossbows.)
After months of hard toil, the work was complete, and a cadre of the finest dwarven warriors imbibed the brew before being sent out on a patrol mission with an acommpanying coucil scribe to track the effectivness.
When the patrol group returned, they brought with them the heads of a score elven scouts, and also the report of an elven encampment.
The scribe later reported that the tested warriors had been able to see the magically disguised elven tents while all he saw was a group of fir trees - later that night the elves launched a punitive attack that was turned back by the dwarven hosts who had been warned hours ahead becuase of the brews efffectivness
To this day, the dwarven warriors that go out to battle with ranged weapons in thier hands have drunk of the potent brew and have become known as the ale-eyes, feared by thier foes and lauded by thier comrades.
Edited for spelling on the background.

Some entries
Both homage to the typical roles marksman/sharpshooters play in combat
- Stone Scout
- Stone Skirmisher
This name references the slow and precise devastation of stone and earth by the powers of water, much as a marksman would take their time to ensure accuracy and the death of their chosen target
-Earthen Eroders
Just for fun
-Pineapple Poppers

Here is my 2-cents:
SteelSights
And a bit of a synopsis/background why this would sound really cool:
The SteelSights are the elite ranged formation of any dwarven army. Trained for years aboveground where the soot and smoke of their industrious home cannot impair their vision, the only way to achieve acceptance into the ranks of the SteelSights is to skewer an arrow or bullet into the very eyes of the enemy. Their aim legendary and their sight unmatched in the dwarven ranks, these marksmen use ammunition forged from underground smithies, honed to mortal precision and deadly in the hands of the SteelSight.

Having an interest in Norse myths (not too much, but enough to be interested), I like the idea of the dwarves making loads of awesome things for the Gods. Oh, here is another one!
ElectrumExecutioners-
Known for their expensive rifles and the their costly service, these aptly named marksmen are worth their weight in precious metals. Often on patrol with their more armor clad brethren, their primary function is to scout ahead of the army, sifting through forest and mountain for any signs of danger. They pick off sentries using traditional and silent crossbows, switching over to the loud and frightening longuns when traditional battle commences. Their deadly reputation is secured, as they often have the honor of mowing down fleeing enemies with their dealy marksmanship.

Hmm...incoming new idea- The BronzeBolters- The dwarves are known for their tenacious close combat fighting, their love of frothy ale, and their dangerous delvings under the trodden earth. Few also know of the dwarven penchant for invention. Fewer still know of the uncanny accuracy that dwarven marksman demonstrate. These two unknown qualities have given rise to the dwarven divisions of their army known for their use of the fine tuned crossbow, and the more recently discovered gunpowder rifles. Training for months at a time improving their aim with both weapons, their practice pays off when enemy lines and thinned and scattered before the might of those dwarves know as the BronzeBolters.

Jagermeisters
(get it... Jager rifles... famous German gun manufacturer of the Napoleonic & Am Civ War era... ah forget it!) Also a drink of course...
207
Post by: Balance
Doesn't Jagermeister also translate as 'Master Hunter' (or is it 'Huntmaster'?) which is still fitting, if perhaps not quite appropriate...
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Got this off Wikki.... apparently its a lose translation of the poem off the Jagermeister bottle (that preserves the poems meter and rhyme in English translation)...
his is the hunter’s badge of glory,
That he protect and tend his quarry,
Hunt with honour, as is due,
And through the beast to God is true
If I understand the Wikki entry correctly, a more literal translation would be...
It is the hunter’s honour that he
Protects and preserves his game,
Hunts sportsmanlike, honours the
Creator in His creatures.
Neat poem. Not entirely inappropriate considering the fig. Might not relate so much to the dwarves roll on the battlefield, but would certainly reflect their normal role in dwarven society as hunters & forest wardens.

Gunners - The Dragon Hunters. Named for their specialty in facing down and matching the Elven Dragon's Claw bolt throwers in hitting power. This fighting unit was created in response to the elven victory at Black Pass. Each member of the company knows that the honour of their people must be reclaimed in elven blood using the superior craftsmanship and black powder knowledge of the dwarven smith
Both/Either - Steel Watchers. Foes of the dwarves know to be wary when venturing into their territory as any piece of terrain could conceal a waiting dwarf armed with a deadly Vignak long rifle or brutally powerful Burkiss crossbow. Many would-be scouts or invaders have fallen to the bullets and bolts of the Steel Watchers before they even realise their danger.

PlatinumPinshooters Most dwarves who serve in the army also work in the mines and forges while stationed at home. Dwarves who excel in close combat for example tend to be the heavy muscle in the forges and mines. The ranged aspects of a dwarven army use their sharp eyes and dexterity for more delicate work; these dwarves often help in the forging of pins and fasteners that hold together the clothes and books of dwarven society. While the infantry of the dwarven rank and file may snicker at such an occupation, their tune changes when they are under heavy assault and a carefully aimed barrage of stinging bolts or fearsome smokepowder helps turn the tide of battle. The Pinshooters as these ranged experts are called are steadfast in helping their brethren keep the dwarven army intact. This symbiotic relationship goes to the core of the dwarven mindset, for not matter the differences between dwarves, their strength of brotherhood is as strong as a platinum bar.

Not too sure whether you will be following a Norse theme, but if you are:
Thormerker (Thor - Norse thunder god, merker - marksmen, Norwegian)
Ullrgarde (Ullr - archer of Norse mythology, garde - guard, Norwegian) or Ullrdwarfen
Outside of the Norse theme, but still with a mythological influence:
[Dwarf] Apollari and/or Artemari (Apollo - Greek archer god, Artemis - twin of Apollo, Goddess of the Hunt) - perhaps one for crossbows, one for muskets.
Trying to think outside the box
