In the spirit of "The Great Marine Swap" by Whalemusic360 Located here... http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/305404.page I've decided to see if anyone is interested in trading objective markers! This way even the non SM players can have some fun too
So if anyone is interested shoot me a PM or post on here and we will try and new obj markers out there!

tony after poking through the SM swap thread I do believe I sort of met you once before. A couple of weeks ago did you play a 40k game at Game Citadel in Bangor? Automatically Appended Next Post: p.s. I'd totally make up some Objective markers to trade.

@syzixx- Get started and post some WIPS here.
As for the Game Citadel, I've never been. A bit too far north for me

Post by: syzixx
really weird then. cause I watched some guy play a game over there with Space Marines that look remarkably similar to your Sky Warriors. You in the Portland area?

I'm in Sanford. All I have left of that chapter is a single marine :( Back on topic, What kind of obj are you thinking?

Post by: syzixx
I've got some Chaos bits and Ork bits that have been collecting some serious dust. Figured I'd do something with those.
26877
Post by: tony_nids_10
Great! I'll be working on a SM one and an Ork one and a Nids one! Same idea as the great marine swap. If you see/read something you might be interested in shoot the user a PM or post here! I'll be putting some WIPs up as I get going and I hope that anyone else does the same.

25727
Post by: Darkvoidof40k
Well, I like making objective makers. Can't say I've done much of it, and the only home-made objective marker that I still have and made recently to co-incide with the continuation of my IG is a Lasgun storage rack (complete with Lasguns). Why anyone would ever fight over/defend them beats me, but it looks cool.
Considering I live in England, and my age, I probably won't be gettin involved in this though.

Post by: Timonth
Yeah, I made two. Here they are.
A abandoned sniper rifle with a PDA with critical information on the enemy.
And a Imperial Pilot who crashed his plane and now waves at a (assumed) rescue party. (And yes, he peed his pants)
Keep the objective markers up! I love those little things.
25727
Post by: Darkvoidof40k
Timonth, those markers are awesome! Might have to rip that Sniper rifle idea off you there.
32540
Post by: Timonth
Haha, thank you! And feel free to do so.
The PDA was made taking a single tanktrack and cutting all the little thingies of that stick out, then painting the middle part as the screen. You could also add some binoculairs to the base, might look in place to on this piece!

I might just use a bigger base and add a dead guardsman - such a common view yet I never seem to see any.. (guess I'll just blame the 'nids like I do for everything..even the Horus Heresy..)

The ammo pile on page one looks cool! Only thing it needs is more ammo, The Space Marine memorial thing is something I couldnt come up with probably and that Black Templar marker indeed needs something on the banner. Also: Is the banner standing upright or is it lying about? I cant really tell from the photo.
31470

The banner pole is spose to be at kind of an angle like its been there for a while. And then the actual banner is supposed to be waving in the wind. Thats my first greenstuff banner though. Hey.. I can help a bit here...
I have 3 Eldar themed objectives.. 2 "comm relay" sorta things.. and 1 "warp gate" or Doorway to Webway..
I don't paint eldar well, but I can give it a shot. I would rather just swap these straight as is..
I am hoping to find some Inquisition/DeathWatch themed objectives.. Or Daemonic Objectives in the Slaanesh or Tz theme..

Shrine, or to do something simple (but great if you paint it well/decorate the base) is an icon of chaos, in this case, specifically an Icon of Slaanesh.

Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
Here is my WIP deamon objective for porkuslime. I was going to hack up the deamonette and make a shrine with the icon, but i really didn't want to cut up this model. Soooo instead of a shrine i made a deamonette standing on top of a blown up tank hatch. Its kinda like the deamonette is yelling VICTORY!!!!!!! HAIL SLAANESH!!!

Ok, reworked the dead marine and made a new objective. Weather is raining and windy so still haven't undercoated anything:
Made the cut in the helmet and moved the bolter, cut it in half too. Replaced the bolter place with a cork rock with the sword placed in the middle. Gives it a little height. I think it looks much better.
The new one is a simple radar station hooked up to a Auspex reader on the sandbags. The connecting hose actually does connect to the Auspex under the bags...

Chaos and Imp Shrines - Imp featuring swappable pole, or will when I have another one anyway
forgot to mention this one earlier - not sure what faction it'll represent, if any, but it does feature an ork's boot And an ork, or rather grot surjary.

I made some serious progress on a chaos objective I'm doing for porkuslime tonight. It all hinged on my getting two new techniques done correctly (well, new for me at any rate). I must say that they worked better than I could have hoped. I don't think I've seen anything like them on dakka before, so I'll post WIP shots when I get the chance.
Guess I got the chance!
Rock wall made out of broken pieces of acoustic ceiling tile. (old model RR trick). I cut the back to match the base with a band saw, then Spackled it. When it dries I'll gently sand the back and paint it black, the front will get a natural treatment. I want this little diorama to look like a cut-away rather than a standing rock formation. There will be a chaos symbol on top and a marine head (helm) nailed into the rocks just below it.
Here is the rest of the sacrifice... long separated from the head... scavenged and grown over. Nothing left but an empty armor shell. Didn't know if I could really hollow out the Mk 6 armor, but it was easier than I anticipated. It's not hollow enough for a real body... but it gets the idea across. These (minus the head of course) will be scattered at the base of the rocks.

Here's a really bad pic of a "Sewer Rat" stratagem marker that I started working on yesterday: Still very WIP(Sorry about the crap pic). The chainsword will be swapped out for... sumfing, and the other hand'll get a pistol, I think. Some ruble and dirt, and a bottom (we don't want that ork falling out the bottom when you pick it up). I'm thinking some sludge, too. Trading it to sum1thtdiesalot for some Dark Eldar fun.

Especially the millions of sprue frames everyone has lying around. Just mix in some glue and a few spare parts and you've got an objective!
I made one out of 3 spare lasguns, a base and a couple of bits of frame. And it looks awesome! Not that I know WHY people would fight over Lasguns anyway.. although I could just say they're prototype hot-shot lasguns but engineered to be smaller and lighter.

Think that's good? Check out the spruecrons.
If anyone in England/near Hertfordshire wants a Lasgun storage objective marker, I might just be able to do it. Depends on how many spare parts I have and if anyone's interested though.
Then again.. I've just been inspired to do a whole heap of objectives.. hmm..

Finally finished porkuslime's Nurgle alter....
This is a little bit of a different take on Nurgle than normal. I must admit to never being a fan of Nurgle or Nurgle things (conversions, paint jobs, etc.). While I can appreciate the artistry and creativity involved... they just aren't my thing. So making a Nurgle alter was an interesting challenge.
I decided to focus on the more mundane aspects of Nurgle's realm... decomposition & infection (rather than pestilence). This is an alter to Nurgle... a simple symbol nailed into the rock wall. It is here that living creatures are broken, and left to lie exposed to the elements until they succumb to their injuries, infection and disease. After death, they eventually decompose or a scavenged by wild creatures. All Nurgles processes, all very intimate... just the victim and the chaos god's powers at work in subtle, unstoppable ways.
The victim here is a Space Wolf, mortally wounded in battle and overpowered by a demon hoard before his brothers even realized he was injured. Dragged here to die in the name of Nurgle. The centuries old carcass has been completely decayed and consumed by the forces of Nurgle now... all that remains is a pile of antique armor, tarnished and dull as time and the forces at Nurgle's call do their work.

Really beautiful work Gitsplitta, natural and well proportioned.
Did you think of adding bones?
I personally like the "sectioned" look to decorative bases as opposed to have rocks and things poking over the edges, don't get me wrong both have their place place but that's the way I like them, with the base acting as a section of time and space.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Lots of options... left shoulder pad is missing which could indicate the left arm being cut or torn off at some point... a broken neck would not leave obvious damage on the armor, and all those nice little flexible joints would give ample entry for a blade, spine or poisoned implement without leaving any trace. Also you can't see his back, if he was overrun the kill might well have come from behind.

I did think about bones actually. Pondered finding a little skull somewhere or manufacturing ribs or leg bones out of brass rod. Two issues there... not sure I have the right materials available for the bones... and... not sure where I'd put them. The diorama is fairly busy as it is... I think if I started scattering bones around they might get lost in all the stuff. I may add one or two just for accent though... if I can figure out a good way to manufacture them
I agree with you on the sectioned look. There are times when I want a piece not to be part of the action but to be separate from it. I wanted to give this little scene a feeling of quiet and stillness, so the cut-away sets it apart from a regular piece of terrain or figure.

Hey Blackhand!
I figured out a stupid simple way to make a long bone (like in the leg). After 1 practice run the second took roughly 1 minute (and I'm not exaggerating). Just used a little ball of green stuff on the end of a piece of piano wire, smoothed it down onto he wire, then with a hobby knife gently split the ball into two parts. Didn't even have to do much shaping as the splitting process pretty much produces nobs that are already shaped.
I'm just waiting for the green stuff to cure so I can prime and paint it. I'll take a photo if you're curious (but you can probably do just as well from the description above). The only "trick" really is that I have those neat little Teflon sculpting tools which makes smoothing the base of the GS pellet onto the wire very easy. Aside from that, it's like a "no-tech" process.

I've been toying around with this when I've had the time recently. I was actually just doing it for fun before this thread came along, but I figured it would be a good place to move it. I'm not totally done yet, still have a few purity seals to finish up and some stuff for the base.
I'm holding off on sculpting the shoulder pads. I figured that I'd let whoever I'm sending it to dictate what was on them, that way it would match their army or whatever.

I have a few more pics if people are interested.
PS: I won't ruin him with my awful painting skills, so he'll come as-is.

Very cool markers, both of you.

Not exactly a shoulder bone... but it's the arm bone leading into the shoulder, does that count? 'Ere you go Blackhand.... did this just for you! This was originally designed to be the thigh bone as it's a little big for the humerus, but I must have placed it in two dozen places on the model before deciding that this is the only place where it made sense and looked good. In non-zoom mode, the fact that it's probably about 50% too large really doesn't show. I actually think a correctly proportioned bone would be really tough to see. With a bit more practice I think I could scale it down nearer to scale... but if no one can see it, what's the point of doing it?

I have one or two IG's that I would make something out of. I also have billions of SM parts and some 40k orks to do something.
I'll throw in WIP pictures later tonight(and if you know me, that will be a day or two..)

Yeah, I've got two pairs of legs now, but I've got plenty of things to do with them... Do join the fun, Gretar. I've seen your support of the marine swap that inspired this one. Good work. Also, if anyone would like to trade, pm's work, or post here. I've got a few more ideas for markers before I have time for my own terrain again.

Post by: Gitsplitta
Just a reminder that the standard size for an objective is 40mm (terminator base). For friendly games it doesn't matter, but if you're involved in something official base size can actually effect the outcome of the game by changing the radius where-in someone can be seen to control/contest the objective. So, if you want to trade these you might think about increasing the base size accordingly (plus it gives you a little extra room to "set the scene").
My other thought was that if you do increase the base size of the guardsman objective, you might leave him on the normal base, then leave a spot on the 40mm base for him to sit. That way the recipient can either use him as an objective, or can take the guardsman off and use him as a trooper.
17244
Post by: The Good Green
Hmm.... I was wondering about that. The base size that is. Two of my tunnel rats are on termy bases, but the favorite (the ork peaking out wiff his shoota) is on a regular troops base.
gretar wrote:Will also work on some SM's and Orkz once I'm done painting these
What!!! That's so well organized of you. I can't help myself with all the modelers ADD I have. I'm gonna try to get these three painted before I start on something else. I'll have to get them GSed first (and some of us know how fast I work with GS... )
Your IG markers are looking good, if not a bit too much like normal trooper. The mortar, on the other hand, stands out because it's not on a larger bass. The larger bases are a lot of fun to use though, because you really get to have fun with the environment of the piece.

I think you can buy them from the GW website.. I dunno though. They do sell flying bases and the like, so maybe they will sell 40mm bases.

Where do you get that the "official" objective size is 40mm? Just took a look thru the BBB and didn't see it.
25727
Post by: Darkvoidof40k
There's a couple of bits on it in the BRB, and it says you have to agree with the opponant before the game about what counts as what and where it's measured from.
I honestly just think it's become the norm and tournament organisers probably just prefer to use 40mm as a standard.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I think Dav's right... I don't remember reading it.. just being told so by the guys at our FLGS who are pretty widely traveled so I'm come to trust their judgement when it comes to "norms" accepted across-the-board, at least in the US gaming circuit.
I apologize however if it was not correct information. I certainly wouldn't object to different sized objectives as long as they weren't played to take advantage of their size (i.e modeling for advantage).

Post by: Darkvoidof40k
Don't believe what redshirts say to easily. I was once told not too long ago I couldn't assault out of my Land Raider. Annoyed me, but for the sake of the other three players I ignored it. Plus the store was great and so was the redshirt, asides from that rule slip.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Actually they aren't redshirts... I've never stepped foot in a GW store in 20+ years of playing 40k. These are the local competitive gamers who do the tourney circuit.
Still, I don't claim the are the end-all & know-all, but they have been a very reliable source of information up to this point.

Post by: porkuslime
Well, for my own armies, I tend to make objectives on whatever 5 like-sized bases I have.. be they 40mm, round 25, or even the square ones..
No one has objected yet.

Post by: Gitsplitta
That would be fine with me... I don't think the size is as important as the fact that all of your objectives are the same size... thats where the inequity would come in.

22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Actually if you look in the Apoc book they use anything from 25mm to a friggin titan head as objective markers, so I dont think there is a set size. That being said, all the tournies I've been to (both of em) used 40mm sized objectives.

O.K. gretar's marker is finished. The glow effects are in though minimal as the paving stones don't really stick up much when compared with the lava. I decided to nix the lava flowing over the base edge as in some of the cobbles there is actually lava going all the way around them and it got very messy & complicated. However I wanted the marine that he did for me on the base for a final photo op... problem is that I needed to give him a bolter & and new shoulder pad and those darn inquisition pads have a big crest on them that meant removing the backpack & while I did that the arm fell off and well, you can see where this is all going...
In any case... he'll be all fixed up tonight. Hope for a final photo then & a little story to go with it before I send the volcanic marker off to it's new home in Iceland (very appropriate I think).

Guys, a day ago (while looking for parts to make a objective marker, I stumbled upon THIS!
<insert picture here> (will get pics tomorrow )
A few years back, I was extremely new to the game, and didn't know about objective markers (I still don't know what they do, but w/e)
I took a bunch of extra bits from my chaos tank spure, and the minion from the termie chaos lord, and made an epic little thing. Finding it now, I think it'll make a good objective.
Like I said, pics tomorrow.

Lucifer, Objective markers serve the purpose of somewhere to capture/control when playing appropriate game types.
On a side note to everyone: I thought of a new objective-based game type today where, instead of capturing objectives, you have to place and defend them. It would involve 3-4 objective markers depicting explosives of some sort, which the 'attacking' team would place and defend at specific points around a building, and the 'defending' team would have to capture and diffuse.
What do you guys think of that?

That would be interesting... and a total blood-fest as all the units in the game would be drawn to a single group of points. Very grimmdark.

An update on my wounded standard bearer for Gretar - still some cleanup work to do, but I've been busy with a commission (that this thread earned me) and a new addition to the family. But here's a pic of the salamander pauldron I've been working on.
Also, this isn't necessarily an objective marker, but it is a fun little project. I made the head over a year ago but couldn't find a use for it, until I slapped a bionic eye on him. This only has about an hour in it besides the head.

Looks good. If you want to trade marines, head over to the GMS thread and post up there.

Whale - It's not just a marine, it's my wounded standard bearer objective from page 5, it just happens to feature a marine!
Thanks Blackhand, that means a lot! I'm actually working on an Imperial Fists pauldron right now, it's a different take than the fist ones you made, but if it comes out looking anywhere near as cool as yours I'll be pretty happy.

Ahhh, my mistake. Being relatively new to 40k modeling, I'm afraid to say that I'm actually out of SM legs!! So until I bite the bullet and buy some bitz or models I'm kinda stuck in terms of actual marines.
I'm still waiting on bitzbarn to offer their grab bag so I can finalize an order (to save on shipping) so I can start stocking my bitz box.

If you like bitzbarn's grab bag check this out... http://www.thewarstore.com/product32719.html
I picked one up and it had a ton of fun bitz for conversions and kit bashes.

Gitsplitta's Objective in action!
Sad to say, merely being able to USE the Chaos Objective in a game did NOT guarantee success. It MIGHT have had the exact opposite effect.. I got roflstompeled.

New missions are fun. Infact, I intend to at some point re-vamp the 3rd edition missions for 5th ed and play some of 'em.

So here is a WIP of my objective marker for my chaos/demons army. I have plenty bitz to make more. I'd be willing to make and paint and swap for some imperial-like objective markers

Sounds good, but what if the side setting them doesn't have to defend, but get away. Like a mad bomber evading the police, and as the chase ensues the bombs start going off! So the attackers could be Arbites going after some gangers. I like it!
As for my own objective markers, I did some more painting on the bases themselves... finally. Sorry for the wait. Of course my brush is toast now. I've been using the same one since I started on Dakka. It's down to two bristles, I think. So, I'm off to get a new brush and I should be able to finish them up today. If it works out that way I'll get them mailed later this week!

I made it out of the bits of the chaos vehicle spiky bits upgrade sprues. Took forever to shave all the flak off the skulls with many an xacto cut on my thumb

Some progress on the sewer rats. I'm done with the bases, here's a pic while they dry:
The third one is as done, but the ork and his gun aren't nearly as neat as the two that I have yet to glue down. So there's that to do, then some touch ups and the mail! Hurray, I might actually finish something!

Ok, I finally finished the sewer rats (all three!). I wanted to take some pics before I sent them off, but my camera is died and I can't find the charger! So, I ask: please post a pic when it arrives. I hope they make it safely throw the mail. ps: there are still two unspoken for if anyone still wants to trade. Flying Poo, interested in an ork objective?

Flying Pooo, those look cool. One note, though. You may want to cut more off the nose of the lasgun. It looks like it's delicately balanced on the sand with so much of the muzzle showing. That sniper camp is so desolate. Very cool.
