In preparation of the upcoming 6th edition and the new Dark Angel book, I am building up my Angel of Absolution army. Everything is painted in Deathwing-like scheme except for the terminators (since they are Deathwing). There shall be lots of angels and sword reliefs. Lots of awesomeness to be found. I hope you will enjoy the adventure as much as I do.
Old info
Spoiler:
UPDATE: Check out the latest page for even better cool stuff. Thanks guys and gals for checking.
So my local GW is having a Kill Team tournament wherein we can take Troops, Elites and/or Fast Attack. Vehicles are allowed if the total armor values is not 33 or more. This means Rhino and Razorback are ok. We suppose to build our WYSIWYG models from scratch and we have to complete it within 3 weeks from the registration date.
This project log is my WIP for the following KillTeam. It means to be a fun for a newbie player (like me) so I doubt it will be competitive. Also due to WYSIWYG rule and the fact that I don't have many parts, my options are also limited.
Sternguard Squad
2x Heavy Bolters
1x Combi-plasma
2x Combi-melta
Razorback w/ Heavy Bolter
I go with the the dark angels veteran models and I pick black as the robe color. It comes out well even without the highlights on the test model.
I made a stupid mistake for trying to prime in the cold weather of Houston. Houston and cold weather? What kind of heresy is this?
Anyway, I botched a bunch of models since the primers come out all bunched up and blotchy. I will need to reprime them whenever the weather gets better. Or perhaps I should go the FLGS and get some help with indoor priming.
So the weather has picked up in temperature, but to be safe, I got my second priming layer for my Sternguards indoor. Those guys are coming along nicely. However, here is an update on the Razorback for them. I find that Razorback and Rhino each has its own place, so I decide to try painting a tactical symbol on it. In hindsight, perhaps I should have painted the Angel of Absolution symbol. Well, another time.
I have some more time for my 2nd Razorback. Also give some love to the Land Speeder as it helped me wiped out a Razorback LasPlas and kill 3 guys inside.
And we temporarily pause the current program for this important public announcement:
I have come into possession of 16 space marine bikes (15 guys + 1 captain on bike), 1 attack bike and 1 chaplain on bike. Prepare for more awesome Angel of Absolution on bikes.
I just wait until I get a good price on ebay. I still have 9 more coming in. This would make up my Ravenwing squad with extra to spare to create a command squad or other bike units.
And so they are almost complete. Since I have some important business tasks at hand, I will need to submit these guys before the deadline of submission for the contest at my local store. I do love how the guy with the book turns out.
I will try to finish the bases soon so that I can put some final touches on the Razorback.
Finally have more time to post my completed bikes so far. I have the apothecary, two sergents, a few normal bikes, two melta bikers, two plasma bikers. I have almost the entire command squad (4 plasma, 1 apo) and a normal bike squad (8 bikers + 1 attack bike). Currently I use one of the sergents as the captain on bike until I get the robed torso and legs to make my own captain on bike character.
I have some idea for techmarine on bike and librarian in bike as well.
I played two games with these bikes so far and they have been much more successful than my normal list. They do relieve a lot of heat that normally targets my devastator and my thunderfire cannon.
Thanks. Sure, feel free to steal any ideas you want. Btw, if you want lots of bike for cheap and you don't mind pre-assembled models, Trevor (who goes to GW Tomball Crossing) is selling his 10+ bikes for less than 50% MSRP. All you need is some Simple Green and kit bashing.
@spudkins Thanks. I hope you will get a chance to start a dual wing list soon. Looking forward to your pix.
So, I got what I won from ebay today and look: a badly built land speeder :-(. Good thing is the lot include half of another land speeder on sprue. Time to rebuild the land speeder. The problem is that the built land speeder (see below) has pieces that suppose to go in first, but now left outside. Thus, it is NOT possible to just put it in. I had to cut out some pieces and then glue it back. Kindda like a surgeon.
More bikes are done last night. I am able to field 1 command squad and 1 9-bike squad with almost all the models painted. The scout bikes have been performing admirably whenever the enemy has armored units or transports. I think I should get started on them before starting my other bikes.
You probably remember that badly built land speeder (not the blue one, the one in the picture right above this post) that I got some time back. It has been doing admirably in its recent games (popping more transport and units than 3x its cost in points) so I rebuilt it.
Aside from the Land Speeder which has performed extremely well, my Scout Biker squad also has done a good job bobby trapping buildings and blowing up transport thanks to the sergent's combi-melta and melta-bomb.
I have yet to manage to take out something big like a Stormraven or a Land Raider on turn 1 though. A lot of monstrous creatures I have met lately.
I get my second lot of bikes from a fellow gamer. Now I have an extra 4 bikes and 2 attack bike NOS + Sammael (metal NOS) which I need to sell off since I won't need them. Oh well, maybe later I need to go to the swap shop and trade for some stuff (like an Ironclad Dreadnought).
Anyway, I whipped out my camera and took a picture of almost all the bikes stuff that I have so far and my current bike list. I am going for
Kor'Sarro Khan w/ Moondrakken
Command Squad on bikes w/ 4x Plasma gun + Company Standard
Librarian on bike - Force Dome + Null Zone
6 squads of bikes all have:
2x special weapons (e.g. plasma, melta) w/ 4 bikers
1 bike sergent with power fist
1 attack bike w/ multimelta (or heavy bolter)
That is a total of 6 attack bikes, 37 bikes.
Plus, I want the following extras so I can swap things in and out of my list
- CC command squad (w/ 3x LCs and 1x TH)
- Techmarine on bike (need to find some servo harness)
Anyway, here is what I have. Time to get back to more painting.
leohart wrote:Nah. I just spend every day doing it after work.
Exactly how its done, just a few paint strokes a day gets the models done.
I dig that black bike. Did you get Max's Ravenwing?
I'd like to see a better picture of the marine biker that is looking back over his shoulder.
@Hmelrose: I didn't get Max's Ravenwing but instead opted for the other lot (20 bikes + 4 attack bike + 3 typhoon land speeder + Sammael).
@sparkywtf: I understand how it feels. I also have lots of things lying around not painted or assembled.
After this chaplain, I will be assembly lining a couple more bikes before getting back to my Drop Pod and Land Raider. This includes the marine biker that is looking back over his shoulder. I will need to replace his plasma pistol with a plasma-gun though. Plasma pistol is too overrated.
So my chaplain is complete. The wash makes the black part of the bike no longer smooth but it adds interesting pattern to it. Overall I like this guy quite a bit.
It is a pretty old model so that might be why he has a smoke launcher. :-)
This is the last bike that I will be working on. Kindda tired with painting so many in a row. I am gonna switch over to painting my Land Raider Redeemer which I got back in Thanksgiving. Hmm, that is more than a month ago. Should really get it painted.
Yeah, he has all his fist iconography scraped off already so he is my chapter Pedro Kantor now :-) He still need a lot done though. I guess I will revisit him once I am done with my land raider redeemer and land speeder storm.
Bloody nice work dude! I love the bone armour, very cleanly painted and I love seeing all those bikes! that's just insane right there! Libby is progressing well too! I may have to subscribe so i don't miss anything with the speed you're churning stuff out!
I have been working on the internal of my Land Raider Redeemer I got as part of the megaforce box with a friend. Too bad he didn't give me the instruction manual so when I assembled I forgot to put in the inner doors (between the two pieces) + the front ramp opening mechanism.
So my land raider now has no inner doors. The front doors don't open at the same time either. Oh well, lession learned I guess. I will be posting the assembled Land Raider soon.
Another thing that I want to note: since I basically painting a deathwing scheme for everything, I have gotten enough experience on how to quickly and reliably get the deathwing color.
Here is the info:
- Basecoat everything with a can of Army Painter Skeleton Bone. Goes lightly in two coats. You don't need to cover everything since the shade of creme is a bit different anyway.
- Apply Devlan Mud wash selectively to create edges.
- One coat of Dheneb Stone to most of the models leaving the edges you created.
- Final coat of Bleached Bone.
- Paint all details the colors you want
- Highlight as you wish
This is the fastest method to do Deathwing and Angel of Absolution that delivers consistent models with clean and good coverage. The biggest time saver is to basecoat with Army Painter. I can tell you from personal experience that working up to Bleached Bone from White Primer is a pain.
I needed to work with black shoulder pads and black backpack some time back. It takes one extra coat of Dheneb Stone at the start to put it into a manageable state.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I just want to quickly give a prop to Games Workshop. I emailed them during the weekend and today I received a pdf copy of the instruction booklet in my email.
That is the kind of customer service that every company should have.
I need to stop working on multiple stuff at the same time. Or maybe I need to organize cut-out bits better because I lost a couple of bits of my Land Raider Redeemer already. Oh well. I am gonna have it assembled and ready for the exterior painting soon enough. I don't even know why I should bother to paint the inside since most people won't see it anyway.
Yeah. It is shame. Once everything is assembled though, noone can tell since the outer doors will cover the missing inner doors.
I got the land raider assembled yesterday. I have been working on the front turret and side sponsons. I want to bring it on the table as soon as I can. Hopefully this weekend.
Patience is what it takes to build those darn raiders! and concentration! :-) I love the finished result when i do them but i hate the building part, yours is coming along niceley the interior looks very good and smooth as! i'll be looking forward to the end result, soon i hope?
So despite my effort, Pedro went ahead and bought a land raider Redeemer with a 0% APR for 1 millennium. Look at him so happy with his new ride. Now all the girls are gonna stare when he rolls up.
Hey leohart,
I've come to check out your blog! I really like your guys man! The detail on these guys is suprub! Keep it up! Good work man! Hey how about yuo check out my blog too? (Link is in signutre). lookig forwad to updates;
Looking good dude, Pedro is tight! the colours work nicely together and your lining work is great it helps bring everything together and really stand out!
looking forward to seeing the raider done! i'm currently building my own with some additions which i'll chuck some pics on my blog tomorrow.
Yeah, I am pretty busy these days so not much game store. :(
Yesterday I finished magnetizing the side sponsons. Note: make sure to use N52 1/8 1/16 magnets for side sponsons. Otherwise, it won't be strong enough.
So I finally finished painting the left half of the land raider in the bone color. I also magnetize the front panels so putting on the sponsons is easy. I will probably magnetize the back doors as well. But there is still quite some work to be done for the other side of the land raider.
No I don't. Living in an apartment means the choice is limited to only paint brushes. The camera does hide away some of the irregularities on the model (sides only). The top part is sprayed with Army Painter so it is much more consistent than the sides and the back.
leohart wrote:I made such a mistake NOT spraying this drop pod with a can of Skeleton Bone. Now I spend most of my time trying to get the color to be consistent.
So I took a Priority Mail flat rate box home and cut it up and make it into a lightbox. I think the box is too big since the light doesn't seem to be enough. Either that or I am missing the side lights. Either way, here is another pix of Pedro.
The land raider side doors have been painted black as well. Now I need to work on the Multi-melta turret on top.
Finish what you've started! work on the raider then finish something else, i find if i bounce from one to another too much I end up getting flat about it all and then giving up for a while! and plus the raider is looking good and all finished up as a centerpiece would be awesome.
So I got back and assembled more pieces thinking that I will finish the land raider. But then there is a tornado outside (heavy rain) so I cannot prime these stuff that I assembled. I guess I will have to work on something else in the mean time. I do have all the pieces for the land raider I believe.
Now, does the multi-melta turret goes to the front turret hole? Or is it the back turret hole?
I agree, finish the Land Raider. We both know that focusing on one project at a time is difficult, but I think you'd benefit from completing the Land raider first.
I believe you'd want the turret to sit to the front of the Land raider, but don't glue it down, its easy enough to remove to swap out pieces and it sits tight in the hole anyway.
Keep up the great work Dude! Hopefully you've still got power and all that after these storms blow through. I picked up the Termie lot from a guy over at GW Tomball, 25 Termies + Logan Grimnar... I know I know.. I need to stop buying and finish building/painting.
Great progress all round since my last visit. Your light box is ideal size imo but I think you will need more light.
I think you're a little crazy to have all those bikes! But once they're painted and on the battlefield they're going to look awesome! Not to mention intimidating!
@Emperors_Champion: Yeah I need to get more lights for it.
Since I couldn't prime until today, I went ahead and finish up the interior and the wings of the drop pod.
Then I am getting back to finishing up the turrets on the Land Raider.
I didn't want give the interior of the Drop Pod a lot of details since I want this to be on the table soon. I will go back and add those details in later.
I am closer to finishing up this Drop Pod. The interior metal parts need a badab black wash. There is some metal pieces on the pillars that need to be painted metal. The symbols on each wing needs to be painted. Aside from that, it is almost table-top quality.
I need to ask for your opinion though. At first I wanted to paint those inner decorative lining of the pillar gold. So I based them with brown color (see second pix). The brown color looks ok but do you guys think a Gold lining would make the Drop Pod looks better? Or will that draw the attention away from it?
Thank you all for chiming in. I finished the gold trim on the Drop Pod.
Today I had a game with my Drop Pod (5 sternguards with combi-meltas), my Land Raider Redeember. I won by a good margin (mostly due to my opponent not realizing that shooting up my bikes will allow them to fall back without being assaulted.
Right now, I am painting up the two scout bikes of the three-bike squad. This squad was doing really well, stunning and destroying the autocannon turret of a Predator in turn 1.
I like the gold trim, i think it works well dude, it's a nice spot colour for it, and now you can add some small gold details on other things to tie them all together, all in all the whole force is looking great and I'm really liking your style! any chance of a shot of everything you've done so far?
@nerdfest09: Thanks. I do like the gold trim as well. I think I have some extra skull icons on the land raider that I can put it and make them gold to tie everything together. Great suggestions.
Re: group shot, I don't have that many things in Angel of Absolution color. Half of my army are in Ultramarine color :-(. But I will try to get one in the future.
Since my scout bikers were doing very well last game, I am working on the other two guys in the 3-man squad. Thre are quite a few details left but they are in tablet top condition.
I didn't get a chance to say this today, but your models look even better in person! I like the gold trim and I think it will accent your army very well.
I especially like the Scout biker who will be driving with no hands, lol.
I echo your comments gentlemen. I will slowly add more decorative murals and other free hands to reflect battles that I win in the future. It's easier to add free hand before weathering than after.
Eventually once I have all these with lots of free hand, I will add the weathering.
The tank truly reflects my noobiness in 40k. I just got into this 4 months ago :-). So it's ok that they are "direct from the dealership".

Yeah, I know how you feel. When you feel up to it, I would look into MIG's Industrial city dirt weathering powder. It's a one and done kind of thing, sprinkle some on and bam! you have a fully weathered tank!
Thanks Hazzer. You are making great progresses your side as well. Yeah, auto-guidance auto-balancing sub-system FTW.
These scouts bikes have been doing quite well. They get creamed in combat but the second they take 1 casualty in the shooting phase, they instantly fall back and it is all good .
I sneaked in another complete Drop Pod. When I primed it with Colour Primer, I paused for a second so some of the details are gone :-(. Anyway, with it out of the way, I am now onto the next thing: Land Speeder Storm and some Sternguards.
Now that I think about it, how did I complete the second Drop Pod so fast?
Last night I finished the assembly of the Land Speeder Storm, just need to assemble the crews now. I am having a hard time finding a heavy flamer bit to put on a land speeder storm (without spending $5-$10).
Below I include a shot of the bottom layer of my BF Shield bag with a custom cut 4" foam to hold a LR and 2 DP.
Have some of you (alright alright, maybe none of you) wonder how I am able to crank these out so fast? Especially when layering up the bleach bone color takes a couple of passes? Well, the trick is to have a psychic power called quick silver ....
Ok fine, the real trick is to base with an Army Painter and then wash and then layer. But in between the wash and layers, you will have to wait for the wash to dry. You can do this the old fashion way, aka have a cup of coffee. Or you can do this the manly way: go to Walmart and get a cheapo (<$10) hair dryer. I was able to wash the Land Speeder wings, layer them up with a couple of coats, coat the other parts of the Land Speeder and paint small patches black all in about 15 minutes. Having a hair dryer on low mode will dry washes and paints in ~5-10 seconds, allowing for continuous painting. Thanks to Les at awesomepaintjob for this tip. I found it in one of his videos years ago and I now finally follow it. Definitely a time saver.
I got a game in today against Ork. I decided to stop at turn 5 since it was a friendly game. It was a fun list so I can field my favorite models. I ended up losing due to objective.
Here is a group shot of what I fielded. My current list is very anti-MEQ-oriented.
First, I want to plug my thanks to Army Transport. I ordered a Motorpool on Monday and I got it today (Wednesday). It doesn't get better than that. Go out there and buy it this month for 30% off. You know you want it. The quality is top-notch and it fits BF foams too :-).
My brother got into Warhammer so he got himself some Bretonnians. Since it is used, he got a jewelry cleaner. This is prime time for me to repaint my termies to be Deathwing scheme. Do you guys think I should do this? Or perhaps I should finish up that Predator?
Oh yeah, and I shelled out some cash for some stuff from Chapter House Studio as well. They got combi-meltas that is convertible to other kind of combis for less than half the cost of ebay.
Nice action shots! Love seeing those models in action! And, thanks for the tip for Chapter house. I'll look them up!
I'm still debating purchasing more storage, I need it, but I don't know if I want to buy it right now. I've got a few more days in Feb to figure that out though.
I might try to get up to Fat Ogre tomorrow evening or sometime this weekend, if I don't wind up at GW Tomball. I need to finish out my Kill Team League games.
I haven't been up for a while. Will be there tomorrow and Sunday to finish out the league games.
About the combi-stuff from Chapter House Studio, they have a kit that can convert amongst ALL the combi options for $5 (that comes with magnets to put into predrilled holes) and they have any specific combi upgrade for $1.5 and the gun where the combi-upgrade comes on top for $2.
Hehe. Yeah that was what I ended up doing since my Terminators have been doing so well in the latest games. I didn't strip the Tactical ones but instead opted for the Assault ones. I should have them sprayed and ready for painting up soon.
The predator didn't do so well in the last two games so it can wait. Once it has more glory under its track (see what I did there?), I will paint it up.
So I got the Land Speeder Storm NOS for cheap for a fellow gamer a local store. He must have snipped some of the pieces on the sprues to put a more interesting pose on his 5-scout man. This is from a Megaforce box which he bought during Christmas season. Since I forgot to check the sprue :(, it was to my dismay that I am unable to get the gunner and the dude who is loading his magazine is missing a leg.
Well, I "kind of" fix it by moving the dude loading the magazine into the front and hiding it away with the gun that I will put on :-). Most the stuff has been painted up, I am still missing some final details of course.
I sprayed, washed and clean up 3 of the 5 termies. Whenever I finished layering, I use the hair dryer to make it dry faster. With 2 coats or so, the lines are nicely defined.
I haven't found a good color combination for the shield yet, do you guys recommend any specific color combination?
Just found your thread. The bone is very impressive. Takes a lot of work to get such a smooth finish. And for an entire army? Like I said very impressive. And I love the Librarian.
Hey, 40kFSU, thanks for the compliments, I try my best but some time trying to get the bone color in place is such a drag.
UPDATE: the stuff from Chapter House Studio has arrived. Now I need to get myself a second Land Raider since these damn doors are just too awesome looking.
You guys, which option is better:
Master of the Forge on foot with a conversion beamer (stuck him with a 5-man tactical squad as meat shield)
Master of the Forge on bike with a conversion beamer (stuck him with a 3-man bike squad as meat shield)
Last game, my proxied MotF on bike with 3 attack bike got taken out first turn with 4 blood strike missles + 1 multimelta from a Storm Raven
I am finishing up my termies so I can move on to my converted master of the forge.
The conversion beamer is from Chapter Houst Studio. The body and head and shoulder pad is from the Ravenwing upgrade sprue. His left hand is holding an auspex (quite fitting really). What do you guys think his right hand should hold?
Right now I have him holding a bolt pistol since it is part of his wargear but maybe there is something cooler that he can bring?
Since the thunder fire cannon is available in metal, the surface of the model is not flat like plastic. I added decoration to hide away some of this blemishes.
The motf and pedro are looking gos man! My only critsem would be to paint the left shoulder pad green or your chapter coulor to show which chapter he belongs with.
@Hazzer: Thanks. Hmm, I wonder what I should free hand in there. The shoulder pad is already in the Angel of Absolution color, maybe I can try to free hand the chapter symbol.
@Thatguy91: Thanks for checking and the compliment.
I added the servo skull to my Master of the Forge conversion. I also blend the plasma glow on the conversion beamer. I think it is not there yet but this is the best plasma glow I have gotten so far. I have also based him. He is ready for battle now.
Nicely done dude! Kantor is coming along great, I love the smooth clean colour of the armour the bold colours work well with him, you're amassing a great looking army!
Now that my scout boys are done. I am working on revising these 5 scouts. The middle one has the style of basing that I want. A local player was kind enough to show me how to achieve this effect.
OMG don't know how I missed this thread !! Good to see another Dark Angels army on the forums. Great looking army just went through all the pages and great progress. Can't wait to see more of your guys done!
I tried picking up some medium grits from the local game store but they only have the fine ones. :| Sad, but I asked them to put in an order with Gale Force 9. So no new basing for me just yet. For now, I will be working on my Vulkan. I have this Vulkan listed wrote down on my 2nd week playing 40k. Ever since it has been on my mind and now is the time that I fulfill the list. I am just missing
- Vulkan
- At least 7 more combi-melta sternguards/sergents
- Two more Typhoon missle launchers
- Ironclad Dreadnought
- Another Drop Pod
Hmm, sounds like I still have quite a few to go through. At first I thought I would paint of an Angel of Absolution Vulkan but then decided against it because Vulkan is such an awesome cast with all his dragon symbols. Plus, I can always give this to a friend since he is a Salamander player.
Questions to you all, do you always build the inside of the drop pod even if it is used exclusively for dreadnoughts?
I am getting started on my 4-man scout snipers while waiting for my Telion scout to come in the mail. Also in the work is the first member of the Command Squad on bike. This is the typical command squad on bike decked out for melee build.
The entire squad comes out to be 355 pts (ridonculous). > But hey, in a friendly games, you can be all crazy.
I think I got the gem/lens effect for red down (scab red, blood red, blazing orange, white dot, gloss varnish). But for green, I think I am missing that middle highlight. I go directly from dark angel green to goblin green, maybe I should have snot green in the middle. What is your recipe for green and blue lens/gems?
And as you have probably noticed, Command Squad will be wearing red robes while sternguards will be wearing black robes.
@Capitansolstice: Yup. Thanks to a super nice local 40k veteran, I am now in possession of enough stuff to run a full deathwing (with GW cyclone bits of course).
They are in perfect shape. No bubbles or green stuff that I can see.
UPDATE: I primed everything already. Will start cranking out more later this week. I am waiting for my Liquitex Matte Medium to arrive, these thinned paint are flowing too much.
Weather is hot enough today for some basing to be primed black. Dry brush a bit, drill the holes for pinning. Add some foliage to hide away the pins. Voila.
As to answer sparkywtf- (I'm the local that gave them to Leo) one of the doors was warped a little, but I've had literally a metric f***-ton of FW models in my life time, also including armourcast. But I fixed the doors and top front loading hatch before I gave them to Leohart .
To fix them is quite easy - hot running tap water, and about 1 minute underneath. twist to get back into shape, blow on it a little, then let it set on some paper towels for drying/cooling. Some people use boiling water and a strainer, but I wouldn't recommend it, can also cause unwanted warping afterwards ;/.
And the models are looking good. I expect that dread to be painted before our next battle Leo
I am modding the finished LRR to add the doors from Chapter House Studio. Finally got some Winsor and Newton Series 7 Miniature brushes + some Matte Medium. The controls available with these are great.
Yeah, I should have shaved them all. I guess I just have to stick to the fluff in the book which states that in some cases, he got "loan" to other chapters, thus he carries the Ultramarine symbol with him.
Thank you all for taking a look and your comments.
@sparkywtf: let me know if you can find some cheap tokens somewhere. Those tokens I got were GW and two of those sets cost $17. After painting them up, they look nice, but the original glowing green is kindda, "meh".
Long time no posting. I finally finished with the base of Vulkan. I have been looking around for some advanced tutorials on layering and such. This is my first try, it does take a lot of time and I am no where near good, but it is coming along. :-) My OSL effect is also not where I want it to be.
I also need to work on getting a light box. Some nice fellow from the local group has promised to help. Hopefully I will have better pictures soon enough.
Have more time to go through and do the metal parts of the Ironclad Dreadnought. I also put back the base color to clean up the edges/recesses emphasized by the wash from the previous step.
Next is to wash the metal color and add colors. Once that is done, time for basing.
@sparkywtf: which size of the drill bit do you use for these? I don't think I have one that is of the right size since I drilled some before and they just look odd.
@spudkins: I looked through your blog but I couldn't find it. I must be looking at the wrong place :(
I used the drill bit from the GW drill. I use that for the assault cannons and bolters (although I may switch that one up). It doesn't look too much different, as it is kind of a small hole, but it still looks better than nothing.
I went to Walmart and picked up some stuff to build a cheap-o light box. My last attempt didn't go so well but this time it turns out to be pretty good. I still need to pick up some light fixtures so I can have a light box permanently setup next to my painting station and computer. This way I can have pictures like these taken in a jiffy.
ALI would use the new badab black, I tried it on a newly primed white model
... And I must say it shades amazingly, with great soft edges and no pooling
Looking really really good, i love the clean white/bone colour on the models. The whole army looks really impressive and really coherent, keep upi the good work
I have been feeling the painter's blues lately. Not being able to crank out good works. So I finished two more attack bikes. They are missing some detailing to really make their models popped. But I gotta work on my other models :-(. Time is so little.
Man, they look excellent! that darker backdrop really brings your shots to life! your blacklining and use of solid colour is very striking and I love the way your force is looking!
A fellow Angels Of Absolution player! This is awesome! Beautifully modelled and painted army indeed, I'm in the process of expanding my force as well, if you have the time or inclination, have a look at my AoA pics here http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-57009-25163_Angels%20Of%20Absolution.html - very basic, hoping to expand these into a full article eventually when school lets up a little
@nerdfest09: I have seen your work NF09. Sir, you do me too much honor.
@nightside: Hello there fellow AoA player. I have just looked through your gallery. You have a good starting force already in place. Hoping to see you P&M blog coming up soon.
They look sweet too! I am simply loving the look of the solid colours! it is perfect for the force and you really are doing it well! you've inspired me to get painting again, in fact tomorrow i might start painting my termie libby I kit bashed!
Gentlemen, I need your help. I am stuck on what would be a good color combination for a lascannon. I am repainting my Dreadnought and my devastator squad and I would love to have something that looks beautiful with my color scheme.
I am thinking of a boltgun metal base with the front muzzle in white and some white elements.
Well, let me start by saying your Tactical guys look great. I think your painting is getting even better with each squad. As for the white, It may be too light. Have you thought of bronze weapons and blue helmets? Maybe even green as a nod to their parent Chapter?
@nerdfest09: Nah, don't be. I am jealous of your awesomely painted Salamanders + Blood Angels.
One thing that I need to start doing: line highlighting. It does pops the armour pieces out even more.
After getting the Sternguards and 5-man tactical squads in place, I think it is time for me to re-do more of my marines. After a couple of recent games, I have found out the hard truths:
1- I should be playing Space Wolves or Blood Angels if I want more troops on the table. Long Fangs and Grey Hunters are so good.
2- Scouts are not that awesome :|. I think in all my games, the sniper scouts managed to kill 2 guardmen. -_-
So, without further ado, here is the current WIP of rebuilding my tactical squads. 22 models to do. I am aiming for about three 10-man tactical squads.
Also, I have an idea, I will do the helmet for all heavy weapon guys in white. I think it will looks pretty awesome. Or maybe I should go for black, a dark colour that would pop. Or maybe stripe. Hmm.
Just more of the same. One thing I like about taking pictures this close is the blemishes are greatly exaggerated. For example, you can see a smear of black in his mouth/breather piece. Once I see these, I go back the miniature and fix it. ;-)
I am working on my second librarian. He will be in terminator armour + a stormshield. Yeah I know it is a bit of points but hey, I want him to live as long as he can.
The two biker sergents are in nice black robes, I finished the cleaning up of bonewhite. Will start with the other details soon enough.
I like your work, I have seen some armies with the "white" scheme that you are using before that is just trashy. Too bright an non-battle worn at all. good job
@Lucazi: Thank you for taking a look and the kind words. Looking forward to more of your comments.
I spent some time today trying the 8-step tutorial of 'eavy Metal stone style for the Crux Terminatus, the result is indeed striking. However, I don't think I got the lighting location down correctly yet.
Do you use the DA codex for this army? if so how good is it, as i am considering starting a new army soon and i'd like to play DA. Other than that i love colour you have used and the detail is brilliant, i always look forward to seeing new things from this army
Hi Young_Logan. Thank you for passing by and checking out my blog.
I do not use the DA codex with this army. I opt to use the standard space marine codex. There is only one way to use the DA codex and that is to use an all Deathwing Terminator army. With the standard codex, I can try different builds depending on the day. It can be bike, psychic, gunline, mech, drop pod, vulkan melta/flamer, ...
You can definitely start a DA army now. Rumour is that their codex will be updated within a year.
great looking crux dude! I really like how it looks against the bone, makes the crux look very cold and hard which is a nice juxtaposition to the slightly warmer tones of your armour, all in all a great job!
and yes, as someone stated, you need an army shot again soon!
Finally caught up with your thread, you been a busy man since I last checked in. Your progress and your army is looking great, very clean army. Can we get a group shot!!
I recently saw an amazing dark angels army in a local tourney and that along with your blog have made me decide to start up a new angel army. I can't decide if I will model them after the Disciples of Caliban or Guardians of the Covenant though...any suggestions for me?

Go Consecrators! They're badass! Was never too impressed by the colour scheme for Disciples of Caliban. Guardians look pretty cool though, but.... CONSECRATORS!!!
I looked at the 3 choices:
* Disciples of Caliban
* Guardians of the Covenant
* Consecrators
I think that they are all very nicely designed schemes. All three are of a darker tone with the Guardian relying on red stripe pattern to bring out the miniature.
I suggest you give each a try and go from there. If I were to choose, I would most likely go with the Guardian because it is significantly different from my current scheme. That and the Consecrator scheme is very similar to my upcoming GK.
Thank you all for checking. Your revisiting is the sole reason I keep posting. Please feel free to post your mind.
I have had some more progress with the two sergents on bike but my camera is out of battery so I will post them later on today.
As promised, here are a couple WIP shots of the Dreadnoughts and the biker sergents. Hopefully I will be able to get a can of primer today. I guess it is a good thing that I can't prime new stuff since I am finishing up the stuff I got started.
Wow, those Dreads look magnificent! You've really given them a smooth finish and I love the look of the cowl on the side of the assault cannon arm - your bikers once again are also very very cool. I like the fist pump and the "yeah, you ladies" finger point
Everything is still looking amazing on your part, and my decision has been made and I am going to work up a Covenant army, just couldn't get away from the monastic unwaveringness of the group.
Still working hard i see! damn nice stuff as I usually see from you, those dreds are gonna be epic when finished and the bikers are very, very nicely done! I'm a huge fan of the black robes you do, it is a really nice focal point on them!
@nf09: Thank you for checking in. I do love the black robes for veterans as well.
@capitansolstice: Check out what I got extra in term of arms @Lucazi: Good luck, please keep us updated.
@nightside: LOL, yeah I can see the "Yeah, you ladies" finger pointing.
Those autocannons are done. I have tried them out in a couple of games and they perform fantastic against AV11. Against AV12, not so much but oh well.
I have been spending my time re-painting a lot of my infantry. Infantry is such a drag because all the work you spend on each guy will net you about 20 pts :|. Oh well, gotta keep on chucking I guess.
I have also started doing plasma in red. I notice that the white dwarf spine of Azrael has his plasma in red. So I want to try that out. Overally I kindda like it. Do you guys like red plasma or blue plasma?
I am saving all the special shoulder pads to be done at the same time since it takes 6 steps to get the cold grey color correctly.
I like the red! I was thinking of doing that for mine. Or orange. Nice difference to the blue everyone seems to do.
And I feel you on infantry. I have... about 40 more guys to paint up just for one of my IG armies. It really sucks to have to paint so many nobodies, but it does increase painting skills.
Thank you all. I am helping my local store building up a bigger lightbox. That way I can take an army shot for everyone for their Army on Parade submission.
I will take that opportunity to also take a picture of my army.
I have been doing too many models at the same time :(. Not all of them are done. I think I should spend some time on just finishing them up.
I am setting these up to play as my count-as Space Wolves. For all the squads:
Left most is wolf guard - combi + powerfist
Second left most - Mark of Wulfen guy
Third left most - special weapon guy
Fourth left most - special close combat weapon guy
Fifth left most - Wolf standard guy (gotta put the standard on him).
The rest - regular grey hunter joes
Look: a video about Angel of absolution scheme by Les Bursley. His stuff is too good. I gotta up the ante.
For some reason, the board doesn't allow me to post a link to this video so just find it on his channel. I am planning on trying out one of my guys with the techniques in that video.
The problem with working with many models is that I stopped knowing which one I have shown you guys. So I grabbed about 10 guys, double-check that they didn't get a good shot recently and post them here.
What do you guys think?
- About the new gold formula?
- About the yellow and black stripe?
- About the converted combi-melta?
- About the golden orbs on red tassels?
Since you asked so politely I like your gold but could do with a touch of highlighting with a gold/mithril mix? but the base of it is really nice and deep and looks good while suiting your paint style
yellow and black stripe! hazard for the win my friend! it's a nice point on the models that isn't overpowereing but gives them a bit more dimension and colour, i'd say keep going with it and you are also painting them very neatly from what i can see which looks ace!
converted combi melta?... what converted combi..... Oh that one!...... see, so good i didn't even notice
big golden balls on tassels?...... I like the red tassels and gold keeps the theme throughout so I'd stick with it if you want to add some extranious additions to the marines it fits with them and looks fine, you're really doing a smashing job on this army! I still love looking at how clean and crisp they all look together, you've got some really nice harmony with it all
Thank you NF for the comments and the nice words. I definitely need to do some highlights on the gold.
I was rushing to get these out in time for the local gw store tournament two days ago. These models were worth their gold :-). That plasma cannon guy took out 250 points of greyknight terminator in one shot.
The powerfist punked many death companies and khorn berserkers before getting taken out by a heroic sacrifice grey knight brother captain.
The hazard stripe chainsword were my devastator sergeants. They took out numerous vehicles plus a stormraven.
Of course my runepriest count as sniped a daemon prince, several death companies and many paladins in his time. Best 100 points ever. :-) I am finishing him up right now, he deserves to be painted.
Oh and I won first place so I got some money for a couple of stormtalons now. ;-)
I agree with NF on the gold. It looks good but some highlights will make it stand out more. The stripes and tassels are perfect. Congratulations on taking first, its well deserved.
Well done leohart! totally a deserved win for you!
your take on stormtalon's would be really cool too, especially with your style of paint! and now you have the coin for them I expect to see them as soon as they're released! :-)
I told myself I will stop buying more stuff since
1- I have most vehicles, the ones that I don't have won't compare when the new flyers come out in a couple of months
2- I have more than enough infantry models and enough bits to build to my heart content
3- I have 2000 pts of GKNIB just sitting there
4- I have 2000 pts of Deathwing NOS just sitting there.
And look what just got here in the mail. Sigh. Anyway, I will keep on painting, eventually I will finish them all. I love these models and I do save quite a bit since GW price is increasing faster than my inflation. Question for y'all (yup, that was the Texan in me), how do I make these sergeant models stand out from my rank and file?
I don't think you need to really worry about them standing out as sergeant model because they are already quite characterful sculpts as they are and a good paintjob like yours will make them stand out beautifully anyway!
Personally I like my sarge's to still look near identical to my troops as i imagine my force as a band of brothers not concerned with ostentatious armour except for their upper echelons, whereas with the Dark angels (and successors) they have a strong visual theme that lends itself well to a few additions such as robes, archaic weapons, censors etc..so i wouldn't stress, i'd just get painting and then see what it looks like, you can always add some details later if you feel you need to!
nerdfest09, I do agree that these sculpts are quite characterful on their own. Given that only sergeant models can have special wargear, I guess they will stand out on their own. I should start painting these once I am done with what was on my desk. I have decided to go with an infantry heavy Space Wolves count-as until my DA codex got updated. These models shall fit nicely.
Thank you for the fast reply as always. Your models are looking super sweet as well. Much improvement over what were 3 years ago. I hope I will improve that much.
No probs dude, I think you'll be pleased if you just paint them as usual, and they'll work in nicely if you use the wolves dex too, I bet you can't wait until the new DA dex comes out! I don't play them but even i can't wait! :-)
and thanks for hanging out with me in my blog too! I appreciate it, I can't believe how much i've improved over 3 years too! it's nice to see i've actually gotten better :-) and you don't need to even wish to improve, I love your style of painting, it's a little different than what most do and it looks so clean and really easy on the eyes, it makes me want to see you paint one of everything available just so i can see what it looks like!
Today, my current can of Army Painter finishes so I picked up an old can that a friend gave me since he didn't use it. I shook it for a while but apparently that was not enough. The result is 10 models covered in super-chalky paints. :-(
So, you guys should hear me and ALWAYS test on a test surface before spraying Army Painter on your models. These models are now in their bath tub (for the 2nd time in a row).
I have been painting up my second Librarian (count as Rune Priest in games). He killed so many last game that I think some SE-NMM on the sword is in order.
What do you guys think?
- Is the transition in the cloaks too much?
- Is the grey lining for the Librarian symbol not neat?
Look at me posting again before any of you can give your comments. I was working on this model for a while and decided that it would be awesome for him to have a pose that I haven't seen from other miniatures before.
I dialed down the ambient light in my light box so the NMM steel pattern comes out easier. I tried SE-NMM Gold on the hilt and NMM steel on the blade. I don't think it works out as I want but this is the first step, the next one will have to be better.

Nooooooo! argh! that is totally sucky when stuff like that happens, I also tend to leave my cans in front of the heater for a short while before i shake the bejesus out of them, might help in the future?
I love that librarian model, actually one of my favorite sculpts ever! you've certainly done it justice, the robes are good, maybe a touch dark in the recesses but nothing that really warrants a negative comment, you need to remember that it's going to be viewed from tabletop and with your other marines etc, so I think he looks great!
your nmm on the blade is really nicely done for a line trooper! I can't really make out the senmm but i do know it's harder to get to look right, I commend you on even trying nmm on a model I love painting but i am out of my depth when it comes to that technique and i won't even try it out! so congrats man!
Dude I can't stop buying SM's either. I've got another 30 guys, 2 Rhinos and a mess of bikes on the spruce. I still have to fight the urge to buy new ones. I think your marine with the nmm blade is the best one you have done so far. He looks fantastic.
Thank you NF and 40kFSU, you two are too kind. I will keep working on my steel NMM techniques until I got it down.
In other news, my local GW is running a painting content, I have until June 10 to submit my entry of a recently released (or is that about to be available) flyer. Since I have already set my sight on getting one Stormtalon from the store, I think I am going to give this a try.
I tried more steel NMM on two normal joes. I also found the "guy holding boltgun" too boring so I put together a "guy wiping his sword". I still need to add blood splatter and do more details on these guys but that will have to wait for 1 week.
Because I am now signing out and driving to the store to pick up mah stormtalon.
Looking great, the metal on the sword looks really good (thought it was mirrored till I enlarged the picture and zoomed). Like the concept of the guy stopping to wipe the filthy xenos off his blade in battle lest it taint such a sacred weapon.
The bone effect armour is coming out really clean too, I know from experience that it can be a pain to get that colour without having to put a tonne of layers on but it looks great.
Thank you Melcavuk for checking. I hope you stay for a while :-).
I suppose I should be working on my Stormtalon (already assembled). But then it was late at night so the weather was not right for spraying. Hence, I worked a little bit on Chaplain Cassius. He is a tough old goons. I am now rolling him with Khan in an outflanking Landraider Crusader full of Terminators. The Stormtalon escorts it of course.
Need to do the base but I haven't painted any Tyranid model so I am looking up the scheme for Behemoth hive fleet. The fluff is Cassius has quite a beef (or is it a bug?) with this hive fleet.
So I tried out the pre-shade, basecoat, post-shade technique with my brother's airbrush. It was hard figuring out the right mixture and getting used to the airbrush, ... All and all, it was a COMPLETE disaster.
Given that deadline of the competition is this Sunday. I am going to reprime this all with a brand new can of Army Painter Skull Bone tomorrow so I can finally start painting. Will need to revisit this airbrush thing.
@Capitansolstice: Yes, I will need to keep on trying
@BrotherGnaeus: Welcome. Please make yourself at home.
I have been rather busy this week but I managed to finish the basecoat of the Stormtalon and add the line highlights on the main body of the model. There are still a lot of highlight to be done on the metal pieces, the front gun, the side wings, ...
For the final touch, I can either do a free hand on the back of the hull. I am thinking of an excerpt of the personal standard of Sammael (if the man can have the only jetbike in the Imperium, he can have a Stormtalon, White Dwarf-sanctioned or not).
I think it's looking awesome! same brilliantly neat paint as i've come to expect from you! (except for that small green smudge! but I'll let that slide lol) I really like the small accent of dark green on the rear, it's just enough, I wouldn't do a racing stripe or image on it, i think part of the beauty of your army is it's very clean aesthetic really works with the colours not being cluttered, of course if you want to you can do whatever the hell you like :-) but great job so far Leo, i am really looking forward to seeing this all finished and on the stand!
I think you are right, the more I try to picture the stripes and the free hand on the backwing, the less I think they will fit with the scheme. Especially when the green section on the rear is already the accent that the model need.
I am going to add a few hazard stripes at places that would be naturally hazardous to stay around at (probably landing gear, landing thrusters, side thrusters, ...
RE: that smudge happened when I watched an episode of South Park on my computer, I was laughing so hard I accidentally smudged it. I will clean it up at a later stage.
I have also put together a base for the flyer. But I have a feeling I overdid it a little bit. I will post some pictures after I spray it black and do some dry brushing later on today. The deadline for submission is Sunday. :| Not much time left.
In other news, my purchasing habit kicks in again and I got a Chimera, Logan and Njal for cheap from a local store that is getting out of the 40K business. Now, what am I going to do with these. That and I am buying some vanguard veterans from a local Dakkaite. Me and my love for infantry models.

this is good! it will tie in with the chainswords you did earlier! and it will be relevant to the model! good idea!
RE: that smudge happened when I watched an episode of South Park on my computer, I was laughing so hard I accidentally smudged it. I will clean it up at a later stage
Ah, the 'ol South Park laughter smudge trick again eh! happens all the time!
I have also put together a base for the flyer. But I have a feeling I overdid it a little bit. I will post some pictures after I spray it black and do some dry brushing later on today. The deadline for submission is Sunday. :| Not much time left.
totally loking forward to this! I bet it'll be great, don't stress!

Oh dude, i feel your pain I just splurged myself too! I didn't plan on buying anything but if you promise not to tell anyone? I just got a Relic Contemptor dreadnought from forgeworld as well as a Ven Chaplain dread to use paint and use as my Death Co. dread my blog should crank up again soon!
Ladies and gentlemen, I am introducing to you my submission for the local GW speed painting (1-week) of the recent flyer release. I welcome your comments and suggestions.
I am so glad you didn't add any graphics or murals! and the little bit of hazard striping is perfect! I seriously (honestly) like this model with your paint job! actually looks much much better than the GW shots! :-) you have really done an excellent job, especially for a week to paint it! bravo my friend!
@Miss Dee: I am working on my NMM techniques. Plus, there are not really much metal pieces that are reflecting lights on top. If you were to do it, which part of the Stormtalon would you add such reflecting lights effect on?
@nerdfest09: Thank you, Damo. I really appreciate your compliments. I really love your deep red Land Raider. I need to learn how to get such vibrant colour.
@sparkywtf @Scipio Africanus: Thank you. It does mean a lot.
I got my submission in today and I won (out of the 3 people who submitted). YAY. Now I will have this limited edition red painting station for my airbrush table. The water pot can be useful and the extra palettes will do for me until I get enough money to buy a porcelain one.
For your cockpit, did you put 'ard coat on the screens after painting? Also I like the HUD! I felt inspired so I went back through your log and I am painting paint interiors now!
@nerdfest09: Yeah I am pretty happy :-)
@sparkywtf: Nah, clean off the piece before I paint on (so my finger prints are not on there) and then start painting the supporting bars before painting on the HUD.
I am currently working on Bethor the Dark Angel standard bearer. He is one of the older models so his scale is way off. I call him Bethor the Slim. :-)
Ah, I use the GW gloss varnish after I paint on the white highlight reflection. It gives a shine that further reinforce the glass effect. It is a paint on in a paint pot.
Bethor looks awfully familiar? Hmmm... I know hat guy from somewhere? Hahaha! The stormtalon came out really awesome. I am looking forward to where the models you received end up in your DA ranks. I will definitely stay posted!
@40kFSU: Yeah :-) I think it is rather funny myself.
@Fallen_Veteran: :-) Yes sir, straight from your shipment to clean up and painting.
So I have been watching some videos on incorporating Forge World stuff into Dark Angels. Now that I have watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bup_zs4Irw8 , I think I have not been painting my robed guys right. They suppose to have a separate layer of color for the inside part of the robes. I need to revisit them once I am done with the current patch. I also plan on painting different heraldry on the angel of absolution shoulder pads as well.
I am going to start incorporating some Mk IV armour into my stuff. Time to scour the internet for them. Have you guys seen really cool Mk IV army (DA-based is even better).
Thank you all for checking in, I am going to post my current sternguard squad picture soon.
Since my Bethor model doesn't have the left arm or the top part of the banner, I dug into my bit box. After some pinning and my definitely-below-amateur-level green sculpting, he is now holding a banner. I am waiting for the green stuff to dry completely before starting to paint up his banner.
One thing that I note was the fact that he is holding a bolter. I deliberated on the matter for a while and decided that a bolter is best. He is going to be near his comrade, inspiring them and shooting down xenos (hence the scope). That plus the 6th edition rumour has it that bolters will be better with its ability to shoot twice at full range.
I hate to bring this up, I have just been in a debate with friends about the new storm talon and some say it is only for codex space marines, since I saw you had one was wondering if you knew for sure that all space marine chapters could use it. I lean on the side of the argument that all chapters are able.
Unfortunately, nobody else but Vanilla can take the Stormtalon. Expect better stuff to come for the other books however.
I present to you my Sternguard Veteran. And a couple of oddballs .
Caption 1:
Sternguard A: "It was him who misfired."
Sternguard B: "I told you to shut up"
Sternguard C: "Sigh"
Captain 2:
Sternguard A: "We should go that way"
Sternguard B: "No we should go that way"
Sternguard C: "Sigh"
Caption 3, 4 & 5:
Sergeant in black robe: "Dude, did anyone tell you that it is pink and not light purple?"
Sergent with plasma pistol: "Real men wear pink"
Asmodai: "I like your dress Sergeant. You free tonight?"
In other news, I tried working on my robe technique but it didn't go so well. Sigh. Plus, nobody told me that adding white to purple produces pink. :(
So, I saw the Reddit thread confirming the terrain so my brother grabbed a bunch of stuff from our personal stash and went to the local GW. Here is what I got for my birthday present. (not the laptop or the 30" WPF of course).
I would love to get some recommendations on what scheme I should paint for these buildings. The one at the store is clearly of Cadian colour. I would love to make it clearly mine.
Man your characters and sternguard look great. Sorry about that Storm Talon business, I just found out myself. I guess Im lucky the guy told me before I bought the thing. Maybe paint your strong point in grays to match the bases? If not you could play around with some of those new shades of blue.
@40kFSU: I think something involving gray would be a good idea
I finished this Sergeant with Signum for my second devastator squad. After this, I would only need one more sergeant with signum and I am set for the heavy choice. Looking at these pictures, I realize how sloppy some parts of the model are. :/ I need to pay more attention especially for the more center-piece models.
I think the model comes out a bit blue because of the white balance setting on my camera. I must have stuck it on the wrong one.
