Congrats to yakface and new dakka and thanks to migsula
I dont usually make a Project log when im sculpting or painting my tyranids
or other projects but this time everything is quite different.
I have accepted, last year, my most challenging commission work so far,
a very old and hard to get Armourcast Eldar Phantom Titan,
one of the biggest fellas i have ever seen (about 36cm tall) and my job
is to cover him by sculpting details on it since he is
a bit lacking on that area.
One of the main problems is that he is so huge im going
to spend GS like crazy on this, also the resin is full of
big bubbles holes so the cleaning alone will take lots of time.
but im quite exited with this crazy project, it will be a slow project
due to its gigantic dimensions and hard one to pull off right
but i will have lots of fun doing it.
time for pics...
By the end of january of 2007 i received this
sketch for shoulder pads
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/9378/ph...shoulderom9.jpg
torso and shoulder pads:
torso front
Torso right shoulder
Torso left shoulder
Torso Back
torso pics
and
Wip pics
concept for Back fins of titan.

Post by: NAVARRO
Still a WIP pic of both of the fins but added arms and if you notice theres some spikes already on left fin in first 2 bigger bones... I will take better pictures, with details and all, when these are finished so for now just general pics to show how they look in the overall...

Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful workNavarro!! Your style fits the oldskool titan and organic wraithbone so perfectly. I have already forwarded this to most of my friends when I saw it for the first time. Be sure to get some pics of the painted one when the painter has worked it ready. Must be an intimidating prospect to face this badboy from the package!!! ps. Welcome back

Good. God.
Love the heads, love the thorns, love the fact that anyone can actually make one of those old things look like a modern minature.

Indeed, Welcome Back and what a start...
This project is absolutely amazing. From concept to finished green stuff, you are spot on sir. I can't help but appreciate how you're adding to what is already there instead of trying to change things completely. I do feel like the large heart could use something extra. But this could also be accomplished with paint.
Your return is much welcomed...

Must be an intimidating prospect to face this badboy from the package!!! ps. Welcome back Thanks mate. Yes its a very imposing miniature, when i first saw it in real life i was amazed by its huge size, pictures just dont do justice to its scale... now i imagine painter face when he sees the scale and the ton of details i sculpted. :-) @grey death my first take on it was: its a miniature with a cool design, and just needs some spicing up on detail and position. So i just followed its design lines and made them a bit more eyecatchy. My objective was to enhance the titan by fixing its flaws but also keeping its original shape. I think the final result will be a old miniature with a modern look but retaining some of the cool oldschool feeling to it. So i try not to fill every bit of surface with GS making a balance of my detail work and original armorcast design. The heart will have to change, client wants a bieltan rune inside of it. Thanks guys

This is absolutely stunning, and may possibly the best outlet of the "tentacle" style of sculpting you seem to prefer. By the time this whole thing is finished and painted it will almost assuredly be mind-blowing.
I look forward to following it.

Amazing stuff.
The true test is if you can make that ugly assed wonky head actually work on that lovely converted model. Hands down the worst part of the model and the one spot that I think will require the most work.

Posted By dienekes96 on 10/29/2007 4:51 PM Navarro, That is simply sublime work, soup to nuts. Nothing else to say except Bravo!!! Are you painting it as well? Thanks for sharing, Chuck The painting will be done by a experienced painter that client ussually works with. @Symbio Joe Hi there bug brother seen your bigger marines and they look very nice, its always a pleasure to read your critcs mate. @ Necros long time no see alienids master, GW doesnt needs me they have lots of talent there (specially looking at new models released this year) speaking o GW stuff im starting a new army as soon as i finish this titan... @yakface again congrats on new dakka work, wish you the best of luck. Yes i do like tentacles and they fit so well with idea of nouveau art/ eldar im trying to sculpt, even if it makes me spend so much GS... lets hope final result is a positive one. I have to be carefull not to fall in the exageration of filling every bit of resin with GS. @Hellfury I agree with you, the head is always the first thing we look on a model and this one will have to be eyecatchy, even if i kind of like the original resin head i will have to sculpt something special. For me the most challenging part will be the legs since im going to reposition them. This is by far my hardest endurence test work, almost one year on it and still a long way to go. When i have a bit more time I will check out this new projec/tblogs section of the dakka forums ( great idea and very apreciated) anxious to assimilate all specially the huge migsula thread. ;-)

Don't worry there's some new bugs that will be hatched in a few months, once I get a couple more of my guard models out of the way. Going to invest in a Tyrgon and after that I just need a few more things here and there to get a bunch of the new Apocalypse formations going What's your next army gonna be?

Good choice i have one trygon (still in box) and its one of the FW finnest moments mate, beautifull model. I just cant wait to see more spawned alienids. On Buglands site i opened a new page for my next army, Terminator heavy Death Guard. Its like the spacehulk duel nids Vs termis but on a 40k battlefield.

I uhm, don't suppose there is some trick that makes creating all those georgous vines/tentacles possible for the sculpting impaired? Like simply sacrificing a new born babe, or dipping the GS in the blood of the innocent or something...
I am simply in awe, looking upon mine own hands as one looks upon a crooked and disfigured hooks of meat, unsuited for any craft.

I like this and even prefer it to all you Tyranid stuff.
Don't get me wrong, all those pieces are beyond excellence. But the thing I always disliked about tyranid modeling was that everything is supposed to be organic and look natural, which makes modeling a harder task because you are trying to obtain a look that the creature has everything naturally.
I much prefer this because it fits into the Eldar para dime perfectly. Even though their tanks and such are grown rather than constructed, there is a certain artistry about everything that they do. So, in my mind, that makes the modeling that much more impressive that the impressive GS work. I really conveys a character and an artistry to that army, and you can almost imagine that they took their time and their affinity to perfect in creating this titan.
Good stuff.

Best of luck, keep us posted. I'm off to Buglands to see how the termies are shaping up (my guess? pure awesome) - Salvage No termies yet I'm afraid, just one lonely CSM convo i did long ago. The Titan is taking all my attention now, so only after I finish it I will sculpt my own projects. @Mahu I think I understand what you are saying, the fact Tyranids are all organic makes them predictable and a bit boring in your opinion... while Eldar contrasts between machine and ornamented organic features makes the concept a lot more fresh and interesting. Personally, nothing beats the pleasure I'm having sculpting Tyranids, its like my litte monster freakshow and i can go really wild with my GS... Mind that I'm also loving to shape my idea of nouveau art/ Eldar armour mix for the titan, but someting is missing, i think with eldar i have to be less wild and have a bit more controll. As a side note sculpting at this so diferent scale is making me realise that I do need a titan sized creature for my Nids... and since I dislike FW hierophant design i have a big free spot for it in Buglands. If you guys get me started on talking about nids I will never stop. ^_^

I love what you are doing to this guy! It is absolutely brilliant. The idea of sculpting the vines instead of painting them is great. The only problem I have, and this is really nit-picky is the two bulbs in the rear that have what it looks as two pieces of rectangular tube pressed ito them. Something about those just bugs me and I do not have the verbage to explain why. Maybe if they integrated more with the design, or just did not look so obviously like pressed rectanular tube. I don't know. Either way yoru work is mind-blowing!

Bulbs are like armour small stabelizers, I see what you are saying and this is part of the problem of this project... you spend tons of time and when you end up one part you look back to the other parts hou have done and think... man i can do better than that! hehe I think best thing is let it as is since client happy and i do need to finish off the rest.

Like grey_death said, better talk about it by PM's, but i must confess I will work on my personal stuff for a wile after I finish the titan... its been exausting...
Now on a totally diferent note I have been collecting Infinity miniatures but since I still didnt get the time to work on them I merged the best of two worlds, like my day work as a ilustrator and my minis hobby...
So when i was making a concept for a spaceship I had in my mind the image of a freaky infinity spaceship... so I come up with this:
Its not directly related to titan but its something that im currently working on, concept wise... I would love to sculpt something like that for infinity....

Is this a Beil-Tan titan, judging from all the thorns?
Not that it truely matters but if so try and get hold of a copy of of the old 1st edition Epic add on Codex Titanicus. In that are the colour schemes and icongraphy for "Hearts Armoured for Battle", the titan legion of the Biel-Tan craftworld. IIRC the only specific icon to add is a heart with thorns wrapped around it in a figure if eight. I think the main colour is bone white, with Dark green trim (similar to how the titan currently is!) - but my memory of this is distant.

I think I have that heart with a vine shaped "8" on a eldar transfer... :S
Now that you mention it i think i need to add something like that on the titan, thanks for the tip.
I'm still making spikes for the vines here... so I'm almost on the verge of getting nuts with this...

Nice Work!
The only thing i dislike (if you can call it that),are the heads on the left shoulder armor. They somewhat break the harmony on the model, but thinking about it, it could also look a bit boring without them. What are those guys supposed to be? Exarchs? Phoenix Lords?
Anyways, my personal favorite are the small writings on the back. Stunning.
And as a total moron with Greenstuff I'm very envious of you skills.
(I stopped working on my Flyrant because I couldn't make the Wings add up with turso. I have the imagines in my head, but the hands don't follow!)

The heads are a tribute to former titan pilot heroes and champions of the past, so by extraordinary deeds they get carved on the titants shoulder... also on that shoulder theres a big "ball" on top, thats a also a tribute to their home planet freaky stuff i know

I also really like the great motion in the lower-body pose. It's probably difficult with the limitations of the model, but it would be nice to see the upper body exhibit the same degree of motion (very flexible and accute for a titan-sized war machine).

this is a commission? You've been sitting on it for a year and a half? I'm surprised the client wasn't hounding you.

The first thing agreed upon before taking commission I do not accept a time shedule for this kind of massive project.
Believe me You see the pretty pics and have no idea of the work in this, and the hours, days, months sculpting it.

I don't doubt that, and didn't mean to imply that if I did. I thought you hadn't done any work on it in almost 2 years.
I understand the work that went into it.

So if this is a commision, is the client pleased with the work with respect to the time involved in it? (They must be paying a lot for this.)

Well if the guy never turns up to pay for it sell the bugger on eBay, I'm certain a few Dakkaites (myself included) would pay top-dollar for a beauty like that.
I'm in the market for an Armorcast, if anyone's selling...

pretty incredible work.
I've got one in a box waiting to get done, was thinking about building parts of it to get a Macross kind of "city built around an ancient robot" thingy. Doing the shoulders and head up as if they were overgrown with vines and plants, and have it removeable so I can turn it from terrain to titan.
Now I'm worried that it'll end up looking derivative and sloppy compared to what you've done here

This is so great that it burns. I'm eagerly anticipating the finished product. I can only imagine that the updates take so long because of all of the (obvious) loving care taken with the model.

I had to redo one shoulder pad and make a huge base for it... already done that and I'm just cleaning some parts here and there.

And then you're taking a squillion photos for your clamouring fans. And then you're posting it to the chap who's painting it. And then they are painting it to obscenely wonderful standards. And then they are taking a bazillion photos of it finished. And then you both automatically win the Slayer Sword simultaneously in all Games Days around the world, even the one's you don't enter for. And then we all crown you as Gods.
Right? Do I have a second for my motion?

Let's have some of those youtube 360 degree pan-arounds as well, like gamezoneminiatures and forgeworld do.

Quick sensible question for you:
From looking at the work you've done, it looks like you've put GS on a surface, flattened it out and then added additional details to that. How do you get the initial 'plate' of GS so smooth and so perfectly following the contours of the model?
Ta.

Post by: jabbakahut
Lots of time and work I imagine!
5256
Post by: NAVARRO
The beneath layer of GS was a major pain in the butt to get it right and smooth but I had no choice really because if I didnt make it the intricate details above the flat resin would fall under pressure of normal things like holding the heavy titan.
To make this I spended lots and lots of GS heres a small step by step:
- Huge ball of GS
- get a plastic bag and dipp it in water
- use someting like roll to streetch the ball into a panckake
- now tricky part remove panckake from plastic without damaging it
- remove water from the pcake side you want to stick on titan
- put it on the titan and with a xacto(dipped in water) shape it to the right size and form
- use water and plastic bags and clay shappers and wet fingers in continuous horizontal or vertical movements to make GS shine ( about 100 movements should be a good starting point)
- apply details fast because you dont want it to cure
- let it all cure
so its a balance between time of curing and getting the surface clean.

Post by: InyokaMadoda
Thanks for that Navarro. It makes sense. Although, if the 'base layer' cures, surely it's not that much of a problem because the GS on top would still stick to it? I realise I'm probably wrong, but I just can't quite work out why!
5256
Post by: NAVARRO
It would but you have a much stronger bound with 2 fresh GS surfaces, and on this titan that weights a lot the stronger the better.
6854
Post by: InyokaMadoda
OK. Makes sense. I guess if you were doing the same style of thing with a marine shoulder pad, for example, it would be fine.
Thanks for the help.

I am curious, you seem to have gone very minimal on the lances, what was the design decision there?

While every detail of this thing is amazing, and the more iconic bitz like the row of mask-portraits are truly inspired, it's the grace of your basic tendril-shapes that amazes me. The root-like shapes around the base of the back fins are somehow the best part of the whole thing, even though they're one of the simplest.
Brilliant work. Hope your energy springs back quickly now that it's done.

The client just aproved everything, he liked the new yinyang shoulderpad and the base also, so I have green card to ship it back o him
I hope they paint it well also, If it is the painter client showed me long ago Im sure it will look great!
The trees on the base are the citadel ones, this titan is 2ft/ 61cm tall, its huge and pics dont really show the details and sheer size of this thing.
@jabbakahut The design choice was simple in theory but hard to pull it on the mini, I tried to compensate the superdetailed torso and shoulders etc with some clean parts like upper legs, weapons and top of the head... If i decided to make everything superdetailed the titan would look a big mess of Greenstuff with no focal point.
THe weapons are huge already as they are, and I want the focus to be on titan head.
I'm very happy people apreciated this blog and the titan, It was both fun and frustrating sometimes but I would not managed to pull this off if it werent for all the net people motivation. Thanks!
Next projects.... "The worm lords", " Tyranids Biodiversity" & " The real secret of monkey island"... THere's already a blog on The worm lords going on here at dakka.

What you said about the weapons makes sense, I wasn't criticizing, just curious. It works well.
What material is that base made from?
5256
Post by: NAVARRO
No problem mate, besides if you wanted to you could criticize all you wanted I have no problems with critiques.
Frame is wood, white parts is plaster and trees are citadel ones...
THis fella is almost 10kilos of mini!

Wow...
So, it takes two years to distill ~10 kilos of elemental awesome into a sculpted model. That's not a bad return!
That thing is really just staggering. How would one top that on the table? About the only thing that comes to mind would be somehow granting life to a squad of the old Diaz daemonettes. Possibly a mega daemon made from real dried body parts, like those "muscles in action" type exibits made from dead people.
So this will only be topped by granting life to inanimate metal, or bringing cadavers to a game. I think your title is secure for all time
