APOCALYPSE has provided the rules for a Warlord Titan, so I can no longer resist the urge to build one.
There are different conflicting source materials to work from so I decided to shoot for something like what is picutred in the APOCALYPSE rulebook.
I'm using ArmorBimbo Crusader Plans for my starting point, it's basically after all a Warlord Knockoff
Basic Body Core
The body core is just thin cardboard like you would get from a cereal box.
I got an idea for an alternative thigh joins
A quick unfold and some new cuts planned
A snip here and there, and a hole added for a core rod
New hip with ball joints (No Ping Pongs were hurt making this)
Core Body assempled with a pencil running through the middle to hold it together and to allow rotation
Leg pieces
Leg assembled
Legs next to core with shoulders attached
The sholder armor is based on a JSV Warhound Titan Plans.
They had the shape I wanted, and I really had no idea what size I wanted, so I used them as a staring point.
Rear Engine pieces again courtesy of the Warhound Titan
Front armor base plates
Not from any set of plans, I just measured them to fit and tried to get the look from the Warlord picture
It already stands about 16+ inches, without feet, a waist, or shoulder weapons.
I expect the feet and waist to add at least another 4 inches in height.
I'm not in a big rush to put it together just yet, as I want to do a bit of posing with the legs.
At the very least I'll have the left foot crushing something, but I don't know what.

Another interesting project I was wondering though... why do you use cardboard instead of a firmer substance like plasticard?
5462
Post by: adamsouza
Thank you for taking an interest, and good question!!
a few reasons actually.
1.) I don't really know what I'm doing
I'm doing this on the fly, all orky like.
Measure once, cut till it fits.
2.) This is a core layer
I intend on adding a 'skin' layer of plasticard that will have all the details and add extra reinforcement.
3.) Cardstock is just good stuff
It's cheap
It's plentifull
It's easy to work with
Did I mention it was cheap ?
4.) I only have access to 1mm plasticard
If I had an ample supply of thicker plasticard I may have been tempted to use it. 1mm plasticard just isn't ideal for such large structures, without lots of internal reinforcement, which would have been alot more labor.

Soo tired, I can barely see straight.
Got the basic structure of the feet finished and then spent half an hour staring at the apocalypse rule book trying to figure out what weapon choices I need to build and tried to figure out how I'm going to make his head.
Going to try to get the waist put together tommorow morning after I get some sleep. I'm thinking something square with two cylinders on the side will work.
Once I get that swared away I wasn't to take a pic of the whole thing test fit together next to some 40k models to get a better sense of the scale.

Basic Head - It's vaguely human shaped, but I don't know if it's big enough for the cockpit I want.
Leg with foot core - Just shown for an idea for size
I'm planning on adding 5 toes, an ankle, and lots of armor
Another pic of the foot core next to one of my Kans

I had to go look up some pics of a epic warlord titan just now to refresh my memory and try and see what you are attempting with the leg, but now that I have I think it is going to look cool when it is finished. I assume that you have basically made the 'core' leg there and are going to wrap the big warlord armour plates around it after that? The head looks to be a promising shape. Always interesting to read (even if other people are being very quiet just watching this thread), but keep it coming cos I am enjoying it!
5462
Post by: adamsouza
You are correct about my plans for the leg. I'm going to make a plate that warps around the front of the leg and overlaps the foot.
Right now I'm working on the size of the 5 toes and the 3 cathederal aperatures I want to add that the leg armor needs to wrap around.
Just got my new scanner, so things are looking good.

It's a low polygon count Titan! That really does look cool. The torso is comming along great for just winging it. Keep it up. I'm looking forward to seeing this one done.

Thank you for the kind words.
It's a low polygon count Titan!
That's one of it's biggest draws to me.
Years ago I had the Armorcast Reaver and Warhound but sold them off because they were just to soft and curvy for my taste. When they released the Forgeworld Warhound and the Epic Emperor Titan with much more flat surfaces they really began to appeal to me.
I definitely intend on finishing this project. Aside from it just looking cool, I have an actual use for it on the battle field. A gaming buddy of mine has the Armorcast Gargant and Epicast Stompa and the ambition to field a "Green Tide" Apocalypse Detachment against me. I need something to combat the Orky Menace !!!
I'm trying to keep copies of all the custom templates I'm using as I go along, so there is also a very real possibility of me making a second Warlord Titan once this one is completed

Post by: Wehrkind
That is just staggering in it's scale. What are you using inside the legs to support the whole thing? PVC?
I gotta say, I am really impressed so far. That is going to be a really cool model when it is done.

That is excellent work indeed! As I see the number of people doing this sort of thing, it certainly gets me interested in doing it myself!
Look forward to updates, really excellent work.

Post by: adamsouza
The whole thing, so far, is just thin but sturdy cardboard, kinda like cereal box cardboard but a bit thicker and stronger, clear tape, and Super Tacky Craft Glue.
Almost all of it is renforced internally with little cardboard boxes I made on the fly to fit in the gaps.
The whole thing is remarkabley sturdy, and alot lighter than resin.
The feet are almost 4" across now, and that's without the toes attached, so stability hasn't been a problem. I fear it may get a little front heavy after I add a vulcan megabolter and volcano cannon, but I'm optomistic that this will be solved by weighting whatever item the left foot will be crushing.

Post by: adamsouza
Okay, color me slightly annoyed.
I showed a 40K buddy my WIP and he told me I was doing it all wrong. After I told him he should take a long walk on a short pier I dug out the APOCALYPSE rule book and showed him the pic. He insisted that wasn't what a Warlord Titan looked like, and I decided to google it.
This is what I found

The Modern Epic Model and the Apocalyspe artowrk are different.
GRRRRRrrrrRRRrrr.........
I like the Epic model better.....
Except the feet....
I sense a bastard hybrid is in the works.

Work in Progress Templates for the lower leg
The piece in the upper right needs to be trimmed down, but I'm going to use this once and cut it down on the model and then rescan it to duolicate it for the other leg. This way is just easier than tryihng to figure out the geometry

The Titans are different because one is the Mars Pattern and the Other is the Luscius(sp?) pattern. Basically one's more rounded, while the other is angular.
5462
Post by: adamsouza
Yeah, I grasped that there were multiple verisions, but it's not just the difference between round and hard surfaces. The armor configerations, the heads, and the feet are quite different.
Different enough I had to do some radicall redesign

Yeah, my M.A.D.D. (Modelling Attention Deficit Disorder) kicked into full effect as I figured a good way to get hand drawn plans scanned and turned into nice looking digital plans.
I built two new ankles and a new lower leg, and I have to pieces of thigh armor waiting to be built.
Which was amazing because I also changed the legs on on of my Kans, built a new Kan body type, got most of the way through designing a STC Train and about a quarter of the way through designing a Mutant Death Van for SHOCKFORCE, because I started to get involved in WARENGINE again.
I'll probably take a break tonight becuase I need to get up got a 6:30 hospital visit for the birth of my son.
My wife will be in the hospital for the next 3 nights after that, so I figure on getting alot of modelling done

adamsouza,
I love your titan, and thanks for the comments and critisism of mine ( I actualy mean that). Anyway, If you would like some measurements off of mine, I can do it. The basic stucture is only a few LARGE pieces of plasticard. I know that you like the look Mk. 3 Warlord, but what do you think of the slightly older Mk 2? It has plenty of flat surface area too, and looks to be even easier to build. I have included a pic of a scratch built one.

Post by: adamsouza
Thanks for the kind words Cuda!!
I would really appreciate the measurements off of your Warlord Titan. At the very least it will give me an idea of what size I should be dealing with. The torso and shoulders of your titan looked really great and it would be a great help.
I also dig the MKII, but I'm pretty much set on the MKIII, as you call it, appearance.
Thanks for the pic though, I'll be keeping it for inspiration.
Update on my titan
HEAD - I have a pretty good Idea on how I'm going to do the head armor, but I just haven't had the time to lay it out on paper. I have it pretty much all figured out in my mind.
LEGS - New Lower Legs are built, Upper legs are now armored, just need to put them together.
FEET - Need to work out the sive and appearance of the toes. I might just try the Warhound toes and work from there.
TORSO - removed the angular armor I was working on. Going to replace it with masisive front armor plates and bigger shoulders with weapon mounts
ARMS - Haven't started them yet. I know I want a Vulcan MegaBolter and Volcano Cannon, but I don't know what I want on the shoulder mounts yet.
They Warlord Tian can not fire the shoulder weapoins at targets closer than 24", and that alone prevents me from going silly with a trio of vulcan megabolters.
I need to find a ruling of wether you measure from the weapon or from the base of the model.
The second leg is bent at the knee. This will give it the appearance of motion. It's a little detail but it makes a big difference.
The MKII is pretty cool looking, but it's stance isn't dynamic at all. All the old Armorcast titans were that way. It's one of the reasons the new Warhound looks soo much better.
The FW Warhound always looks like it's in motion and the Armrocast one looks like it's lining up for a mug shot

Figured out the main cheast armor plate.
Instead of making it some fiddly bit that folds over itself etc.. I'm going directly for foamcore for it's bulk.
I've got a good technique for tempaltes now.
I draft them out on graph paper.
Scan them.
Then I trace over the lines digitally.
Then I lighten the photo untill nothing but the lines I draw in remain.
Then I edit in text.
This is allowing me to turn out printable templates in a matter of minutes, which is a huge plus.
When I am done with this project I intend on bundling all the templates with instructions together into a nice PDF file to share.

I slapped the new armor plates on it
NOTE TO SELF: Redesign shoulder supports from 3 boxes down to 1. 8cm deep x 20cm long x 5cm tall.
The shoulder supports were left over from an earlier design and I had already glued the armor plates on before it occured to me to redesign them.

More bulk near the shoulder is probably a good thing. Try the 3 boxes out?
Great progress!

I am keeping the 3 boxes on this one becuase I already glued it in place. The one new box will be as big as all 3 of those put together. There is really no good reason to have 3 seperate boxes with this build. I just don't want to rip it to shreds to replace them.
Added some abdomen armor as well. Will post pics of that tommorrow.

Post by: adamsouza
Come on, Vader has two distinct eye sockets and the overlapping helmet sections, as well as the fron grill being triangular.
If anything, my design looks like a Cyclon from the new BSG
Which was unintentional, but hillarious becuase I was reading the BSG RPG while I was making it.

Post by: legoburner
Looking good, and I can definitely see the cylon resemblance now that you mention it. Are you leaving the vision slit sealed, or might you open it up and put in some interior detail too?

Post by: Foda_Bett
Your warlord is looking really cool.
Have you thought about adding some lights to the head?
Normally I don't like the new "apocalypse redisgned" warlord but this hybrid between it and the metal epic one is turning out really cool.
5462
Post by: adamsouza
I hadn't really considered adding electronics to it when I started, but now that you mention it, I might do something simple like opening up the slit, adding a 'window' and a redlight inside the head
Someone else, cough, cough, Foda_Bett, has put the idea in my head about a motorized vulcan mega bolter....
I have a dozen small electric motors left over from my DeffKopta project I'm working on...so it's only a matter of time.
The one obsticle I'm trying to avoid before hitting it is how to support the additional weight.
I had originally just palnned on making a really lightwieght titan, so I didn't really reinforce the legs all too much. They are reinforced against collapse/crushing, but to support additional weight I really should have created and endoskeleton.
I'm in the proccess of adding plasticard skin/armor plating to the legs. With luck, the additional layers of plasticard and glue will reinforce the knee joints. The knees seem to be the structural weakpoint int he design.
Normally I don't like the new "apocalypse redisgned" warlord but this hybrid between it and the metal epic one is turning out really cool.
Thanks.
I've stopped using the Apocalypse art as a reference at this point. Too many round shapes and cathederals looks cool, but they aren't functional and they bothered me more and more as I went along.
Giant Armor Plates, or steps and doorways into the leg? Hmmm........

Post by: Foda_Bett
on my warlord I put grab handles (like on tanks) so you could get up onto the ankle and the into a hatch.
Of course if you were the princeps you could just use the elevator
Have you thought about filling the legs with something?
I know when building vinyl models it is recommended that you fill the legs with plaster of paris to add weight and stability.
Perhaps you could double check the seals on the legs and then pour in some plaster?
You could even run all the wires into the legs so the main weight (the batteries) is in the legs/feet.
Lights can be found cheaply and light weight.
I have a strobing light on my warlord that started out life as one of those "safety lights" that runners wear at night, it had a nice cylon like effect so on it went.
The motors I use for my weapons are also very light weight, i'm sure if you have motors that you were going to use for deffkopta's they should be light weight.
5462
Post by: adamsouza
I appreciate the feedback and suggestions. Please keep any ideas you thing woudl be helpfull coming.
The week point on the leg is due to the reverse knee configuration. The bit between pieces 10 & 11 in this pic.
It's sturdy enough for now, but I just worry that if I make the top to heavy it will just break the bons and snap off there. A wire armature probably would have alleviated that if I thought to include one.
Right now I'm not going to sweat it tooo much. Breaking it apart to reinforce it isn't an appealing concept to me, so I'm going to try it as is. If it's breaks under the weight, I'll just reinforce it before assembling it.
The lower legs are pretty hollow, so if I need to weight it later on it would be a simple matter to drill behind the knee and fill it with sand.
I have a strobing light on my warlord that started out life as one of those "safety lights" that runners wear at night, it had a nice cylon like effect so on it went.
I was thinking about just a continous red light, but if I come across something ala Knight Rider, like you did, then I'll have to change my plans. Currently the plan was using the little battery operated candles, like they use for Jack O Lanterns. I saw some cheap at the local Dollar Store.
The motors I use for my weapons are also very light weight, i'm sure if you have motors that you were going to use for deffkopta's they should be light weight
Muhahahaha
I didn't exlpain it well earlier. I bought a dozen or so little remote control with wire race cars at the dollar store for my DeffKoptas, but not for the actual motor. The race cars had little fake engine blocks on their hoods, that I'm cutting off and using on my DeffKoptas.
It left me with a dozen Remote control cars without carapaces.
I've so far managed to resist the urge to motorize anything smaller than a War Marchine.
Planning on having a Stompa with working buzz saws, and Motorized Vulcan Mega Bolters, but that was about it at the moment.
The Baby has been eating up my modelling time the last week or so, and I haven't been able to work on miniatures for more than 5 minutes without being interrupted.

The Machine Spirit compelled me to affect repairs upon it's half finished form.
* Added a new Waist piece. It adds another 2cm in height and allows more clearance for the legs to move. I've been meaning to add this piece for a while and just got around to it. Was thinking about going for something more intricate, then decided simple was better in this case.
* Added caps to knee and hip. Turns out that the caps from vending machine bubbles were exactly the right size for the job.
* Gap Fiilling and armor plating here and there. Hard to see becuase the glue dries clear and the platicard is white.
* Took some pics. I know that what everyone really wants. Well Pics and then templates

* I've got some amor plating for the head I'm working on, to make it look more like the Epic model. I'll post pics and templates as soon as I'm done trimming and reshaping them.
* I've been focussing on detailing an reinforcing the legs, but I think I'k just going to jump to the shoulders and get thier framework on there, so I have an idea about what size I need to work with for the arms.
* A horrifying thought occured to me. I have no idea what colors I'm going to paint this when I'm done.

Those legs look awesome. The slight digitigrade going into big columnar lower legs is really, really cool. I haven't seen that before anywhere (alternate STC templates!).
Only thing I'm not so sure about is the length of the head- but it will no doubt be balanced out once you add detail. Maybe the long face could even be a plus.

What weapons will you be making? the Chain Sword is a great model to make.

f74, if you make that a Chaos titian, it might actually be a place to use the otherwise not so practical GW gothic scenery bitz pack. Lots and lots of candles on random ledges would be good. You could also model them out of GS, if you're long on time and short on cash.

Woah. Really cool build you've got going. Will be awesome to see it finished. The only negative critique I can give you is about the head, which I think looks kind of fugly in its current incarnation. Other than that, there's really nothing I can moan about.
Now stop listening to my incessant ramblings and finish it!

Hi I'm new to this site but I just wanted to congratulate you on your kid and of course the titan that can only be described in one way. In the words of unreal "GODLIKE"
p.s. now I'm going to have to build a warloard because you've inspired me
p.p.s. Just out of interest did you rescale any of the templates from the leviathan crusader ( namely the ones you don't mention if you have changd e.g. the torso templates and the majority of the leg templates)

Hey, congrats on the baby! Hope he's doing okay
Really, really cool Titan. If you're stuck for inspiration, you should have a look at one of Dan Abnett's books for the black Library, Titanicus. It's quite pricey, (About £19 over here. Not sure how much that is in Dollars thought,) but it looks a real good read, and it should inspire you no end. I'll keep coming back to this topic, it looks like a really interesting one.

This guy did an absolutely spectacular warlord titan, if you're looking for some more inspiration. The WIP thread is up on warseer somewhere. Some of the over-all design ideas I may have done differently myself, but what really got me was all the micro-level details: catwalks, flashing lights, servitors running about their work.
Your project looks like it's coming along real well though. Stay at it! I'll be sure to watch out for updates to this thread

I would suggest using something cheap and abundant like foamcore, or even carboard if your desperate, as the base building material and adding layers of detailed skin over it.
That way your not wasting valuable materials on the base, which you'll probably be making changes to on the fly.
Also, the biggest let down I've seen on scratch built titans is people who don't layer in any detail. I've seen more than a few Warhounds that follow the plans exactly, glue on a few chapeter symbols and paint and call it a day.

Thank you for your help and for answering my questions you are an asset to this community I am currently using 2mm card for the one I am trying to make in my spare time (thank you for the templates) and am thinking about using foamcore for the chest plate then plasticard for detailing. I am having a bit of trouble with joining some of the templates together for the legs so I am thinking of using thin strips of card or paper on the inside for a bit or structural support.

Your titan is amazing. I mean amazing. in fact it is so amazing that i have started making my own (by the way im only 13). I have gone for a fast easy to make titan. It is not like any other warlord. it is sort of my own style. I have made it so it is light and portable by a.useing cardboard b.making parts detachable.
Do you have any tips for me?
p.s. your titans awsome
p.s.s. you titans amazing

This is would not be a very good move as you could just get a warhound to carry that. The titans best use is from ranged attacks. It also has void sheilds witch would be useless in CC.

I got my STOMPA assembled like 10 pieces of it and immediately dug out my Warlord Titan, well at least what pieces of it I could find.
Having taken a big break, I'm looking at it from a fresh perspective. I've had inspirational breakthroughs.
I'll put up some new pics this weekend.

Post by: adamsouza
Both of the original heads were fugly. Now I've basically smashed them together to make a new head. It's larger than I orignally planned, but it's big enough to seat a crew and the required tech, as well as beefy enough to look like it can take a hit.
Considering the Warlord is armless and weaponless, I'm going to roll with this new head untill the rest of the titan is finished. After I'm done, with everything esle I may revisit it.
I bulked up the abdominal armor. Nothing too fancy. I added an additional layer of foamcore and rounded the corners, like the Epic Model..
I think the next thing I will work on is the shoulders. Everything I've done soo far is about to scale with what I figured, but the torso looks undersized without the shoulders. I know it isn't, but it's bugging me.
Alot of the stuff I'll be doing over the next few days, I'll be sure to take plenty of pics of and provide measurements as I go, but I'm holding off on turning out any more templates for a while. To be quite honest it takes longer to produce the templates than it does to model anything, and I'm eager to finish this project.
I'll be putting my inner circle membership to good use and be picking up Stompas is bulk tihs month for a friend and I desperately want my Warlord finished to crush his puny Stompas.

Some cool visualizing stuff, as well as good skill with cardstock. What sort of program do you use to design the stuff as shown on page 3? Also, someone else may have metioned this in the mid pages, but technically as there isn't much more than concepts, it doesn't really seem logical to call 1 sort of warlord right and 1 sort of warlord wrong, but that's just my take.

You know, all these titans springing up inspire me.....
I've started sketching plans for a knight titan (the sane scale I think for 40K) and will start a blog myself when I have something to share.

Thanks !
What sort of program do you use to design the stuff as shown on page 3?
GIMP.
It's a free graphic editing program.
I make all the pieces by hand, scan them, and then photoedit the scans to make them suitable for printing.
Also, someone else may have metioned this in the mid pages, but technically as there isn't much more than concepts, it doesn't really seem logical to call 1 sort of warlord right and 1 sort of warlord wrong, but that's just my take.
I dunno what you are refferencing here. You lost me.
I did start using the image from APOCALYPSE as my inspiration, and then changed my mind, and decided to use the newer EPIC model.

An excellent beginning and I applaude the choice of material. These projects do not have to be expensive with the wealth of disposable plastic going into landfills and recycling dumps. (Did you know if you recycle your plastic bottles and leave the caps on they don't get recycled!!! I didn't know that.)
Keep up the good work; this is a thread I am greatly interested in as a Warlord will probably be my next project.

hey I just thought of something. I wonder if its possible to sculpt a warlord out of pinkfoam or that high density blue insulation foam. I mean I've seen a tyranid titan made from that stuff but not an imperium one.
oh and adam hows the kid?
and have you managed to get any more done on the titan?

The Modern Epic Model and the Apocalyspe artowrk are different.
Okay, so I know I'm a bit late, big whoop, wannafightaboutit?
Anyway, just to inspire you to do future projects...
The titan "types" are actually just size and armament classifications. Like SM Power Armour coming in different Marks, two titans of the "Imperator" class for example could still be different bodystyles. So your Apocalypse Titan is still fine, as long as it fits within the scaled size-bracket.
Hopefully this inspires you to create a few more cardboard titans based off the class specs with your own twists on body styles.

I've been distracted, but the real reason I have not been working on this much is I'm missing one of the legs.
My son hid it on me !!
Recently got a new printer, so my concept to template turn around time should be faster than it was before.
Also, I've been making LED lit terrain lately, so I have a feeling I may find some way to incorporate LEDs into the Titan for no real reason now

Sorry I have a few more questions
is most of it foam core?
how the heck do you get the card to join in each set of templates?
how long does it take you to do 1 piece roughly?
I'f your going to use LEDs I'd have to say the eyes are the best choice

There's a design difference between the Epic model and the Apocalypse picture: it's the difference between the two patterns of Warhound. The Epic is Lucius Pattern, from the Lucasian Forgeworld, and the more rounded and ornate Apocalypse one is Mars Patterns, from the Martian Forgeworld.
