The old and the new. Ultraforge resculpts. @ 2008/01/31 06:04:41

Post by: Sophia

I remember opening Ultraforge a few years ago and posting some pics of my miniatures here on the Dakka boards for review. I have been lurking around here for a long time and value the blunt and honest critiques that Dakkaites are famous for. I posted my old Treeman and then someone else shortly after posted a picture of the Koolaid Man in the same thread... as they look quite similar... unfortunately . I think I cried for about 5 minutes and then began envisioning what a cool Treeman might be like (and how to avoid it looking like a corporate mascot again!).

I then took a bunch of time off and re-opened Ultraforge recently with some new sculpts. Among them are a new Giant and Treeman, who is now a woman! I never forgot about the "Koolaid incident" and it served as a great lesson on how I can learn from my defeats. I am posting my old and new takes on the same mini so that you can discuss whether or not you like the changes.

Here is the giant. The new one is on the left.

... and the trees. The new one is on the left.

Pretty huge changes really. Certainly less cartoony and more gritty. Maybe you like the old ones better? Either way, please feel free to contribute your harsh critiques... but try not to make me cry!

Sophia.

Both are huge improvements!

the giant has a great posture, and a lovely expression! his hand holding the club seems a bit too small to me (the other hand definitely looks bigger), perhaps it's the actual distance it is from the camera playing a trick of proportion on the eye.

also, his legs seem a bit short, but a creature like that wouldn't necessarily be a bodily proportion in ratio to a human's

the treewoman: i absolutely <3 this sculpt! only thing "bad" about it is me worrying all those lovely branches might break off! :( i *especially* love her knee facing the viewer... wow that part is just stunning o.o

...keep up the good work! ^^ you have a lot to be proud of here!!!

I'm going to have to say.... both old and new are pretty awesome and I would be honored to have either of the newer one (more my cup of tea). Both are cartoony, but in different ways. The old are cartoony like older comic books, while the new versions are like graphic novels. While the old are bright and playful, the new are darker and more serious, their character and essence written more deeply into their detail, as if they tell a story without any words. That is art.

Great input. I agree that the club hand looks a little small in the picture Mr.Bombadidaloo but that same hand actually looks too large in the other side view photos. My camera just tends to 'fish eye' the picture quite a bit and makes the stuff up close fairly large. Actually a nice effect if not misleading.

I tried the make the Giant slightly asymmetrical and fairly mutated while still looking humanoid. Kinda like the growth of real life people with gigantism due to irregular distribution of growth hormone. The upper body to leg ration is kinda more like a gorilla than a human. his kinda helps tell the story of a creature that is very heavy and rather lumbering and apelike.

I enjoy your take on the old and new in terms of artistic direction Skinnatittar. The old and new styles certainly tell their own story.

I hope you don't mind if I post this picture from your website:

It doesn't come with those branches (just saw the notice in the other pic on
the site), so this is how it would look like if I bought one?

I'd have to see the Treewoman in person or in the midst of a Wood Elf army
to make a final determination, but I'm not sure how well the scale would
fly on the 28mm table. I DO regret buying my current treeman, though (GW
standard one). The realism of the face almost makes it look like a woman in
costume rather than a woman made out of trees.

As a standalone figure, however, it looks lovely.

I will definitely consider it as a future purchase. It seems like a steal at 68
(or even the standard 75!) bucks.

if you don't mind my asking, how did you go about sculpting the thinner branches?

*edit* oops nvm ^^;; that will make it less fragile hehe

It is accurate to say that the Treewoman looks quite naked without her little branches, but after you paint each layer its own tree color it starts to look much more treelike. Then you just gotta go for a short walk around the block and gather up some very thin twigs and branches. Even straw from a broom makes a great branch. Glue the little twigs to your painted and sealed Treewoman and you have a very original looking centerpiece. Its also free and requires no painting!

Another idea is too simply buy a Woodland Scenics or model railroad tree, cut off the branches and simply glue those onto the Treewoman branches. I will be doing this for my next Treewoman as I want to giver her a green and lush springtime feel. Fairly cheap and very easy.

This is the website that got me the whole 'glue on branches' idea. Some of these trees are so great they even got little leaves! This is where I'm buying my next batch of branches from. http://www.miniaturetree.com/

I would suggest gluing the branches to the back of the arms, back and head and not the fronts. This makes her a little less cluttered. I tend to move the Treewoman around on the battlefield by her arms and base. It is a great fit with smaller scale miniatures since she is raised off the ground a bit and models tend to rank up nicely next to her. The skulls and skeletons on her base pull things back into the 28mm world.

Transporting the miniature is now a chore as you have to protect your branches, but for me I just stick everything in a case and hold my Treewoman in my hand. I suppose you could figure out more interesting ways to transport it around, but yeah it is trickier than usual.

Her price is pretty darn low in my opinion, especially compared to other companies that sell large scale resin miniatures for an arm and a leg!

That giant is amazing. The head and especially the expression on his face are just fantastic. I love the shape of the head - humanoid, but not quite human. And the expression isn't raging giant, it's more like he's spotted something new and is thinking, actually thinking about what he's going to do next (ie. like he's just seen another giant, a dragon, or something as big as he is, and is wondering if he can take it on).

The Treeman... or Treewoman I 'spose, is nice, and from a sculpting point of view is very beautiful. The problem is it just looks like a leafy woman, not a hulking tree-person. All Kool Aid comparisons aside, the old Treeman was a big scary monster. This new one is neither scary nor a monster. Maybe that's what you were going for - something feminine and graceful - in which case bravo, mission acomplished, but if you were going for a replacement for the old treeman, this one just doesn't look 'big' enough.

Solid critique H.B.M.C. and I agree that the new Treewoman is a graceful thing and not very monstrous. I just really wanted to indulge in a feminine monster for a change and she came out looking perhaps a touch too pretty. Perhaps I will offer my old Treelord as a scarier option on my website as he tends to get a good reaction. Thanks for the input!

Just for a size comparison question; I don't really like the new GW giant. The big fat gut makes no sense when the rest of the model has spindley arms and legs. The proportions of your new one are spot on, and makes it look like a really big almost-human person. So, my question is, as far as size goes, how tall is your new giant compared to the GW one?

Reason I ask is that we're slowly (very slowly) thinking about starting Fantasy in our group to take a break from Warhammer, and I like Orcs & Goblins, want a giant, don't like GW's and I think your one is ace. Is it 'big', as in big by Warhammer standards, or is it smaller than that (or bigger even!)?

At the local games store I have my Merc Giant next to the store painted GW Giant. It makes the GW giant look kinda like a pregnant boy, since mine is a little taller and a lot more proportioned. Tho my giant is larger he is still relevant to the heroic scale since he has skulls, sheilds and various items on his belt that are all in the 28mm scale.

You do get a lot more customization options when assembling the GW giant, but having an Ultraforge giant is about as rare and customized as you can get becuase we are such a teeny tiny company. The base size is the same, and I find mine a little easier to navigate around a tabletop since it is heavier and sturdier than a hollow plastic giant. I personally love working with plastic and I find resin performs in a similar way tho has the added bonus of weight.

I actually like the GW giant for certain specific reasons. The Ultraforge giant just provides another option to someone who is interested in a different body proportion and facial expression etc. and will give you an edge on scale and detail if there are another other giant owners about!

I kind of like the old ones more. The new ones look more like humans that were given new skin. They still look awesome but I like cartoon comics more than graphic novels.

I personally love all four versions and I'm sure we all wish our "failures" could turn out so well, so bravo to you.

While the newer versions most certainly feature some marked improvements in both detail and proportion, the old versions also have a fantastic style to them in a completely different way.

If I were to play Fantasy I would most certainly consider picking up any one of those models.

Now, if you'd only consider making something that fits into the realm of the 41st millenium that isn't demonic. . .maybe a giant Orkish brute, perhaps on a bike?

I think you just named my new mini for me! (work in progress)

Perhaps the term dryad is more applicable to the Treewoman? Dryad being a "divinity presiding over forests and trees; a wood nymph." I suppose that would make the Treewoman one huge dryad! A dryad queen perhaps?

The differences between the old and the new are like night and day. Your new sculpts are absolutely stunning with the attention to detail, tone, and graceful execution. On the same token, your old minis are full of style and playfulness that you don't see very often (even something GW is having issues capturing as of late...). I like all four for different reasons. The new giant screams of fierceness and malice, While the old seems to be screaming "Get Back 'Ere!!" ^_^. And the new treewoman has an elegance and grace I don't think I've seen for a long time. Where the old treeman has a lumbering "i'll get there eventually...and when I do....." appearance. The amount of character in these figures is greatly appreciated, and a welcome refresher from the same old stuff.

Are you planning on re-releasing the old models?

Your WIP sculpt is looking amazing so far, looking forward to seeing it completed.

I was cracking up while reading "i'll get there eventually...and when I do....." Priceless. Well said.

I have to now seriously consider offering some of my old miniatures on the website, tho it was not what I had originally planned. If there is genuine interest and requests mailed to me I will go ahead and cast up a bunch. If not I am just going to try to sculpt in a wider range of styles and try not to take my minis look terribly hardcore all the time

I just finished the rivets on the Plaguedude's armor tonight and hope to get him shipped off for casting by the end of the week. Ill post some pics as soon as he is all done. Thanks for the compliments.

Ahhhhhh, UltraForge!

Just happy to see your stuff again, and that you're up to new tricks too

The new giant is, as noted, really something, and I agree with HBMC on the treewoman not being monstrous enough for my tastes. Looking forward to the new plaguelord, that was one of my favorites of yours originally.

All four of them are different in thier own way.

I say sell each of them. The more variety the better. It isn't about which one is better in this case, its about what different people can do with the different ones.

I have to say that the female one, really doesn't look like a giant tree/ per say. Its more of a table setting, or a sculpture for the mantal.

They all have difeerent feels to them, which is a good variety.

Good variety= choice.

The sculpts are amazing, can you make some squads or heads in the same style as like that new giant in 28mm?
They would make absolutly great diggas.

Strange thing to say, but I like the belly of that giant. The Gw one is just...well...In german it would be "Plauze", dunno about English, but it just looks far more realistic with the skin sculpted like you (you do it, right?) did. Other than that I agree with most other posts.

To the Dryad, I think it's a bit out of place for the run out of the mill Woodelf army, but if you have somewhat of a theme going on (Dryads, female woodelves if there are models) then it would be perfectly. Other than that, it reminds me a bit of the keeper of secrets from Forge World and that is saying something!

Any chance for international shipping?

P.S. oh, and the Plaguelord looks fantastically ugly!

Sold! I am a fan of the bootay!

The newer giant is amazing. Like HBMC said... you can see him thinking. He is also far more detailed than the first without being GW over the moon!

The newer tree chick obviously represents some amazing work. Breath taking. I like that you went for a more "feminine" look. Even with that I think the face needs a bit more nastiness to it. Not ugliness. The model puts me in mind of Galadriel describing herself as "Beautiful and terrible."

Did that make sense?

Keep up the great work.

I gotta agree with Grey Death on this, all four sculpts are awe inspiring in their own way. Even though it seems like the new stuff is the direction you are wanting to go, the old most certainly have their place. The "Tree Women" is my fave though and if i didn't hate Wood Elves with every ounce of my being i would start an elemental host with that baby at the front.

Also don't be sad about that Kool-Aid man comment, i challenge you to find a single person who doesn't love and want to party with the big man. OH YEA!

The Face of the new giant reminds me of someone. First I thought of the Butler of the Adams Family but no , then maybe "Tiny" from Rob Zombie Movies but still not there.
I like this serious "You next!" glare in his eyes. Although I like miniatures more which are on the move this one is pretty nice.

@Schepp Himself I think the word is "paunch" in english.

All I have to say is - Wow. Absolutely brilliant stuff. I do like the dryad a lot, but she looks almost too refined and much too well proportioned to fit in with any of GW's cartoonish sculpts. The old treeman, Kool Aid man reference aside, is still a fantastic looking model.

I always get wierd looks when I tell people that I think the new GW giant is a rubbish model. Sure you get lots of parts, but he doesn't have any personality, and his pear shaped body makes converting him hard.

The new giant looks like Michael Berryman somewhat, who also made an appearance in "The Devil's Rejects".

They're both good work, though I would have suggested etching more wood grain into the Treeman's face for a more 'wood-bole' appearance. I really liked the previous Treeman, as it reminded me of the hill-billy treemen from "Something Positive".

I like both of the new sculpts and both a real improvements on the originals. I regret not having an army that can use either of them.

In defense of the treewoman, I like that she looks like a tree spirit and not a big block of wood. All elves and their allies should have an elegance to them. I always felt in was strange that the treeman and metal dryads would look so clunky. The rest of the army doesn't look that way. I think she fits in nicely with the current plastic dryads.

Top Notch.
What I can see is downright incredible.

I love the new sculpts. The new giant is freaking awesome, and the treewoman is very well done. I did like the old treeman, though. The old giant, not so much. And the preview pics of the two demons makes me sorely tempted to start up that Black Legion Space Marine army again.

Most excellent. Make an Avatar of Faith type model so I have something to field in Apoc battles with my Sisters! I will buy two, one for the table, and one for my special happy place.

Really, it is fantastic work, and even if the treewoman looks more like a sylvan demigod than a treant, I don't find that to be much of a problem for me

Loved the tree model. I actually like the fact that its more human aspects are coming through. The blending of the face to the tree parts reminds me of the cool blank faces female robots are given or machines project. I think it would be an interesting project to paint. I will definitely consider purchase one.

The giant is nice but not subantially exciting enough for me to purchase unless I needed a giant. I think it is definitely better than the GW one, but maybe combining both would lead to what I would want.

Good luck, look forward to seeing more great designs.

One question, how big is it relative to a man sized model or the GW treeman?

Those little Reaper sculpting dolls are perfect little scale providers... and are great to sculpt over too!

Thanks a lot for your comments and critique. I am learning quite a lot from this thread. I never consider certain things while sculpting but really start to understand what people want when reading reviews. I often regret choices I made while sculpting but with only two miniatures in I have plenty of time to augment my approach with Ultraforge.

Today I gotta package up some minis and mail em out so I wont be able to finish those demons as I had hoped. Hopefully tomorrow or the next day they will be complete and sent to casting. I will get a final photograph of the greens before I send them of so I can post em.

A lot of people have been commenting that the Giant looks like the guy from the original The Hills Have Eyes. For me, the giant is a mixture of a caveman and a gorilla while being kinda mutated.

The main emotion I wanted to convey was "ugh, another three dozen men to slaughter. I would love to escape to the hills and live in peace but my love for the human ale and food keeps me fighting. Better to work for the humans then be hunted by them I suppose."

The giant is kinda sad and defeated, and is more of a circus sideshow attraction for the warlords that hire him. He doesn't have any real self respect and wonders what it is like for solitary giant roaming the wild. I was greatly inspired by the LOTR cave troll story, as he might normally be quite gentle until provoked.

Ogres would probably be the best Giant hunters since they can stand a little punishment themselves. They could then offer the giants as trade goods. Would probably explain the tattoos on the giant as they could serve as Ogre clan name-branding? "Buy a Pale Skull clan Giant! Dey da best!"

OH damn these are nice figures! I dont think I've ever seen anything as well executed.

The stomach on the giant really grabbed me, as it's exactly how someone's stomach bunches up after they gain and lose weight quickly.

I think Dryad Queen might be more fitting for the Treewoman though, more calculating than bloodthirsty looking, and I love the stump like protrusions on the legs, makes it look like she "trimmed" herself to move around easier.

I wish the citadel design team had half the vision and talent evident in these sculpts, kudos!

Love the new giant. Kinda reminded me of the "Bad-Guy" in I am Legend (please take no "cool aid-esque" offense. It works perfectly as an angry behemoth).

The Treewoman is beautiful but perhaps a little too human. GW's Dryads are a mix of tree and obvious humanoid form, which I think works better. They don't resemble humans, just the way humans move etc.

I would still but it just for how awesome it looks though.

Any idea what sorts of projects you have coming up? I might buy a tree woman just to paint and have fun with, but I have way too much to paint as it is. Any plans that might make a loyal servant of the Emperor start salivating and rubbing his debit card in lascivious anticipation?

Seconded. I'd love to see your representations of anything from 40k, be it Ork, marine, necron, eldar, inquisitor, tau or whatever. There are many models that loads of people like, but no ready models for them, like the warboss on a bike, or a seer council on jetbikes that I'm sure would sell well and look awesome should you decide to sculpt them.

Personally I'd love to see alternate sculpts of the necron C'tans as well as the pariahs, but I assume those pieces are a bit small to consider putting too much effort into.

As for your current sculpts, I completely love the new giant.
My only complaint is that his barrel-knee "armor" looks a bit too much like a "fantasy-version" of the knee protectors used in airsoft or skateboarding, but I guess that has a charm of its own.

As for the treewoman, I have to agree that she doesn't strike me as a "I'm gonna rip you to pieces" type of monster, but I guess that also has something to do with her abnormally large chest...
All in all a great model that I'd most definately purchase if I was into WFB.

As for the WIP models, they are looking great! Keep it up!

Careful in calling for Ultraforge to do GW-esque models.

IIRC GW had issues with them for using some GW imagery in their early models.

Whether or not GW had a legitimate case is unfortunately beside the point since few people have the money to go to court over it.

So best they make their own things.

I like both giants, though they approach the concept from very different angles. The old one looks like something from a Disney movie, a big fat baby-eater. The new one has a story.

Duuuuude, why? Some people may have thought it but why post it? Why conform to the sterotype "hur hur girl hur hur she has boobies hur hur me want but cannot escape from mothers basement" that seems to percolate throughout the hobby. Never thought I would get that word "percolate" in a sentence not about coffee - hopefully I have managed to spell it right. Anyway, back OT. She is obviously talented and has come her looking for an opinion on her talent and ability as a sculptor - there are other sites where you can appraise someone on their physical attributes. We are hopefully at a mental age where we can control those impulses on a message board about mini's and sculpting. Oh, and by "We" I am obviously excluding you - just incase you needed that cleared up.

Why not? Im out of sleep having to finish my diploma (?) for Thursday, nervous as hell, and so on.
And I too find the figures very well made.
But to be on topic:

A very little criticism about the two WIP demons:
I think the armour on their left arms looks to similar, I mean those overlapping parts, which are almost the same shape.
Now back to the basement, playing with little plastic toysoldiers. I mean drawing monsters.
No really, I do monsters.

Yeah, I think my english was better once.

Of course you meant to degrade her. You can't step back from what you clearly asked for in your earlier post. And then, the first response that called you out on it, you never denied it. In fact, you "justified" your request by saying that you are "out of sleep" and that you were "nervous as hell", "finishing your diploma". None of those are acceptable responses, nor was your initial request.

One can't make degrading requests of woman, then claim they are not degrading. It's ridiculous and completely disingenuous.

And for what it's worth, the new stuff is amazing, but I still dig the old treeman. I'd grab one just to hang some nooses from for a centerpiece to an undead WHFB army...

Painted up in undead type colors the old tree would look nice, especially with all those nooses and stuff!

I actually just put some new putty onto the old Treeman. I am redoing his hands to make them a little more like Edward Scissorhands. The old one is nice but I want to try this out before re-releasing him. He will probably be ready in about a month or two.

I think I am also going to include a Treeman tutorial on the website and show how easy it is to add a model railroad tree to his stumps to make him look even more like a real tree. I am also doing up a springtime Treewoman with some model railroad trees as well. So easy to work with as they got all their branches and leaves ready to go.

I am not sure if I am going to re-release any other 1st gen Ultraforge minis, but I am going to be doing a re-sculpt of the ever controversial Lord of Pestilence.

Thanks for all the comments and criticism everyone. I am learning lots and am excited to make future Ultraforge minis even better.

We are seriously serious about value and after seeing what other big companies charge for their large resin cast minis we feel darn good about it too!

We are actually coming out with a larger female demon that you may like for only 60 or 70 bucks in about two months. She will be released with two large wings but will have a non-winged option on month after her initial release. Will have WIP pics up on the site in a few weeks.

Being the proud owner of two of the new giants, I had to give a testimonial.

Having owned the treeman of old, since I hated the GW treeman, I was pretty happy to see UF back and with new models. I ordered two giants, one for e, one as a gift for a friend.

First off....it got here pretty quickly from time of ordering to arrival of doorstep: 8-9 days from Canada to here in the US. Thats pretty good.

Second: The model is as impressive if not more. Placed next to a 25mm models and it towers over them. Its as big as lit looks in the pictures.

Third: It goes together fairly easily. It comes in 6 pieces: base, lower body, upper body, head, left hand, right hand. Dry fitting puts all but the hands together without any work. The hands will need to see the fitting sanded a touch to make the fit. But overall easy of assembly.

Lastly, and one I think most important:

No clean up. Any of you that have bought the overpriced GW forgeworld stuff like I have KNOW how much flash and such and other issues you have with them.

The giant comes not only CLEAN, with just some tiny mold lines at best, but any bubbled areas or imperfections have been filled in already. any spots that perhaps may have had bubbles have already been taken care of.

So in closing? If you remotely need a giant, buy it. You wont be disappointed. I cant wait for the end of the month for the 2 demon models...frankly I would easily preorder them just based on the giants quality and the green picutes I've seen

I just got my tree woman in the mail yesterday- talk about QUICK service! The entire model is well cast, no issues whatsoever and she was easy to put together. I added some additional branches on her top using plastic bits from GW dryads. I also added a number of GW sprites and some etched brass leaves I have. I'll post some pics up soon of her, all primed and ready to paint.

Any chance you'll be doing anything besides these huge models?
If you can do these large models this fast, I'd think you can do smaller stuff even faster.

I'm thinking of things like wings.. Demonic, birdlike, zombie-esque, buglike, batwings... I'd wager you'd do great sales in these things, once word got around that you were making them.

I can tell you right now... I'd buy Daemon Prince wings from you LONG before I'd buy them from GW, even at a higher price! Same goes for Forgeworld (though I doubt yours would be at a higher price).

I'd imagine that, in the next 10 posts, you could see a horde of achievable "accessories" you could do.

Id love to have a gallery for customer painted minis. Ill add one as soon as I get some pictures. There is a seriously nothing that thrills us more then seeing our minis used in wargames all painted up. That is the greatest reward for us.

So far the painting has been done my Jeremy and myself. I did a little more of the base coating and large sections of wet blending and Jeremy did a lot of the fine detail and patterns. I got to stick most of the little twigs on the Treewoman tho which was a lot of fun. Future Ultraforge minis will be painted by a variety of people, as I am going back to school soon and Jeremy is focused on sculpting more Ultra minis. There are two award winning painters I know who Id love to paint for us in the Vancouver area, so Ill be knocking on their door as soon as these new demons are cast.

I also love the idea for accessories, demonic and other. Wings are a great idea as there never seems to be enough around! All sorts of infantry squads have wing options and there are very few to choose from. Tho we were not considering doing anything small just yet we might have to consider making some accessories and see how they do. Any opinions on which specific things to sculpt are very welcome.

The female demon WIP is up on the Ultraforge Miniatures site now. She is wearing her wing option in the picture. When I get the casts back from the first run I will be able to modify her so she has a bare-back wingless option. It was very important for us to include both a winged and non-winged option for each demon, but we have to wait an extra month to get her into a wingless state. I personally like her better without the wings, but Jeremy likes them better with.

Also included is an 'ol classic, the Lord of Pestilence. I love him becuase he is quite controversial and has undergone a few changes. He is also based on Ultraforge's first mini ever produced. His newest incarnation features some re-sculpting in order to add some detail and much needed depth. I also wanted a more cyborg-ish feel so we added real cables and wires.

Mh...I second the wingless option. Looking at this picture, the wings don't seem to fit in just right, if you know what I mean. I wait for some photos from other angles.

And what I just figured: When she stands back up, wouldn't the knee armor be bended? A little nitpicker, but still...

I totally love the Plaguelord-mutant-guy... If I had a Nurgle army, he would be on the top spot on my shopping list. How big is that fella?

You guys make serious progress, keep up the good work you two!

Those are just amazing. This is what I don't understand, with so many talented people out there who can create absolute masterpeices like this, why can't GW do a little outsourcing to bring some armies up to speed? Nevermind, that's something for a completely different thread. I'm loving the Lord of Pestilence, reminds me of Bioshock . Just wondering though if we could get a picture of these guys next to some regular 28mm chodes for scale?

Yeah, both of these models are incredible. If I played Slaanesh, I'd be picking up the female demon and that Lord of Pestilence is just begging for me to build a Death Guard army around him.

You know, you mentioned the possibility of doing wings as all sorts of Infantry Squads have wing options...GW used to make some cool old-school turbofan jump packs, but it's now been a long time since they've produced them. There's still demand for them, though - I see folks asking about them with regularity on the trading boards. That might be something to consider as well.

I really do love the female daemon, even if her right... gland... seems a little out of proportion (probably just the pic.) It is really making me want to do the "Fallen Sisters" Slaaneshi army I was knocking around in my head.

So, seriously, any chance of you doing something that will pull back form the path of heresy and help me return to the Emperor's light? Inquisitors, Cannonesses, Living Saints... etc?

If "gland" means "breast" than I on it, too. Her boobs just don't look natural...maybe I'm too European to appreciate it, but I would dig a more natural look myself.

Or those leather thingies are just solid gold when it comes to holding power...

Just something to consider.

They do strike me as quite "full" and even fake. She is demonic though, so no worries? :S

I think it's just the angle of the shot that makes the breast look a little off. The left one looks fine... How does one make comments about the breasts of a figure and not feel... weird?

I want to see the back of that female demon. She is getting bought and used for a greater demon of slaanesh.

If the wings are a separate piece, then why not just cast it so the wings just fit over her back muscles?

You ever conscider alternate heads?

Maybe a more evil non human face like this one: http://www.freewebs.com/millenniummage/demon_face.jpg

Optional horns, or horns with long flowing hair would rock!

What ever ya do, its bought anyways

You are awesome.

My money will be your money as soon as the wingless one is available.

Dang, forgot to get my photobucket upgraded and ran out of bandwidth. Sorry about that. It sucks to hear about pictures and not see them.

I was prepared for a bit of criticism when it comes to the size of the female demons boobs, hehe. I went for the Californian goth porn star look with her and have no regrets. When she is all painted up with white skin and black leather she is gonna look sexy and unrealistic basically. I assure you her boobs are the same size, there is just a black shadow that goes across one in the pic.

I agree that shot of her from the side is one of the less flattering wing shots. I am however very happy with the way the wings turned out. The base of the wing is just clashing with the thinness of her arm. Once you take the whole thing in it becomes more balanced and natural. We also do not get to really see her lash, blade, legs or stand so when you see the whole thing it may provide a different perspective.

The 'PlagueLord' and the 'Pleasuredemon' are both relative in scale to the other two demons, and make use of the same scenic base.

Her armor is based on historic metal and leather armor. Studded leather for the corset, and plate steel for her legs and forearms. The knee is a rigid plate that does not bend, but the "lames" of armor that come out from it do. In this respect, the armor functions as it would if it were actually made for real. A lot of time was take to make sure the armor is riveted in the right spots as well, so it would articulate properly if it moved. Hard to see in the pic but I will get some more up as soon as we get her back from casting. Thanks Jeremy for watching way too much Lord of the Rings, hehe.

The problem is that we don't know precisely how big those are, either.... at least, I don't recall seeing any measurements here.

Any chance you can tell us where, say, a Space marine would stand in comparison to these models, so we know what the basic size is?

Oh... and I think more "glands" on the "Pleasure Demon" would have looked better... more like what she's SUPPOSED to represent... or, I should say, will most often be USED to represent... but I understand the potential legal troubles you could face if you got too close to the looks of a "certain company's" product. She looks a bit too "porn star" for me, but it's still a NICE model.

Thanks!

If you look close at the demon on the right you might see his spiked back pieces are separate from his body. You glue them into place if you prefer an un-winged demon. If you want wings, simply place the wings in those ports instead. All of the demons will be for sale with a winged and non-winged option eventually. Unfortunately I do not have any pics of the winged demons but will take plenty when I get the minis back from casting.

ah the good old lord of pestilence.. I still remember the happy day I had when I ordered one and found two in the box. I still feel tempted by the new version you are working on though, so maybe I can have a trifecta. Papa Nurgle would like that.

As for his size, he is a bit bigger than the current terminators. Mine are off being painted though, so I don't know for sure just how accurate that is. I remember them being about as tall as if they had daemonic stature, but just barely.

Holy jumping Jesus on a pogo stick!
Those are PERFECT.

I don't know that I'll be getting the one that resembles something Khornate (face is too human for my tastes), but I can guarantee I'd by IT before buying the FW Ang'r'ath model.

As for the LoP model.... Oh, yes. He WILL be mine.... and he will be winged.
In some ways, I DO prefer the FW model but, overall, YOURS makes that one look like sh!7!

Thank you for the comparison image. It is PERFECT!

I'm not trying to be too demanding... but I can't help but ask... Do you happen to have a picture of the rest of that scythe?

Unfortunately I do not have any more pics of those minis since they are all packaged up and on their way to being cast. Suffice it to say that the scythe is suitably rusted, pitted and decayed and well suits the mini in my opinion. If you did not like the scythe then you could clip off the long handle and stick a weapon on each hand.

We are considering doing an alternate head and weapon combination for each demon down the road, so that would be a chance to get two huge rusted meat cleavers in his hand! That would also be a chance to do a 'Wardemon' face re-sculpt to make it look more animalistic and demonlike, and get some hair on the 'Pleasuredemon". This would not happen for another few months tho.

I'm liking very much what I see and think the female Daemon is just what I need to supplement my Slaaneshi force.

The OTT Californian breasts are okay, but her face seems to lack the expression I would expect from a crouching she-daemon. I envision that pose with a rictus grin, fanglike teeth, and rapturous glee at finding a new prey item.

Still... the whole line Screams "Wow!"

I mailed out the masters last week and they should be arriving in Texas either tomorrow or the next day. They should take a few weeks to cast and another week to ship, so they should be added to the store in at least a month. There are no pre-orders unfortunately but I will post here when they do come available.

By the time they arrive we should be over half way to finishing up our next mini.... but this new one is a fairly massive undertaking. I will post WIP pics when I update the website to include the new miniatures.

Well, I feel pretty good about providing a Dakka exclusive:

The new Ultraforge miniature is a very versatile dragon that includes a standing platform for you to place any commander on (good guess Salvage!). If the dragon dies and you can place the rider on the field of battle and you can also change up the rider depending on which army you are playing with. We are designing it to be the last dragon you'll ever need to buy as it suits a wide range of uses. The dragon is themed for dark and evil and spikey armies... because other dragons out there are just too darn nice lookin'!

This mini will NOT be released with a rider, as we figure you already have an army general that you would like to simply place onto the platform when you decide to use a dragon. This saves you from having to repaint a new miniature, and also from having to find a seated version of a rider that fits the theme of your army while still being able to fit on top of the dragon. This also means you can use the same dragon with many different armies as the mini you place on the platform can then allow it to fit in with whatever army you are using or are going to use in the future.

Jeremy is doing most of the sculpting on the dragon. His style is more realistic and gritty than my more cartoony style. I am really enjoying watching this dragon come to life! We will post WIP greens on the site in a few weeks.

I am curious to your thoughts on the standing platform. It is different than the conventional seated rider and allows for far greater flexibility but looks quite a bit different. Our inspiration comes from a lot of video games and fantasy art. Here is one example of the idea...

The alternate idea is to have the dragon riders legs as a component. This way you can use the upper body of any miniature, glue it onto the legs and have a greater range of possibilities while still using the seated position. Right now we are debating the virtues of each idea and your thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

I think the original idea is preferable--after all, there is considerable variation in proportion and style between general-type minis, and I think in practice the legs you provide will not match that many of them.

I'm UK based and I bought a giant the Saturday before last. It arrived on Tuesday this week - total delivery time 8-9 days. He is truly an awesome 'miniature'.

I had no problems with customs or VAT but they can be pretty random about such things.

The model looks to need minimal trimming and filling. There are tiny surface cracks in 3-4 places on the body which should fill easily or due to their size I could probably paint straight over them.

I'll be very tempted to buy from them again if they produce something else which fits with my armies. A big thumbs up on price, delivery time and quality of product.

These minis are "Awesome" and "Win" in resin form. Truly amazing!

I have this image of a Treewoman in an army of Dryads lead by Drycha... and that's one of the simplest but coolest themes I've ever came up with, heh.

Also on the Dragon:
I love the idea, I really do. I would hope that the rider's platform is a little more like a cross between chariot and howdah, and less like an orator's platform (which is what the one in that image strikes me as).

Either way, I'll likely be picking that up when it's ready, depending on how it turns out. I need a good dragon to zombify.

Random thought. You said versatile, have you considered multiple poses for the wings? The flared out, ready to strike, "look at me I'm a big scary dragon" pose is nice, but variety is the spice of life. And a dragon with it's wings folded back before it lunges at your little men-at-arms can be menacing too.

Really looking forward to it!

ok here we go...

I was a little suprised at first, the package seemed rather small and light, secured tightly in a jiffy envelope I found...

looking further, the actual pieces are inside the foam padding in a placcy bag

the pieces arranged, all very clean and no obvious defects, warping or holes.

an example of the minor filling work pre done to ensure you can jump straight in..

finally it put together (took all of about 5 minutes) and stood next to others for scale, to the left is the classic marauder giant and to the right is the Hersey Netherlord..

thoughts?

Well he's huge!, larger than I expected (the current GW giant is about the size of the marauder one). The resin used seems a very fine, light, high quality material. The level of detail is simply astounding, I cannot really show it via these poor pictures but its actually above that of Forge World. The definition on tiny things like the fingers and toes is perfect, even down to veins in his hands, this is the most detailed, most finely sculpted model I own.

10/10! I dont wanna sound all hyped or a suck up but I am really impressed. I can safely say this wont be my last purchase from Ultraforge.

one last thing.... that face must have been inspired by Michael Berryman?

I just recieved mine in the mail today (Merc Giant) and I have to add to the review already posted.

It's massive, it stands a few centimetres shorter than a Necron Monolith.

Also, the head and hands snap fit together pretty well with the premade pins, much MUCH better than Games Workshop "premade pins" go together (coughGorgercough) and a very minor amount of gap filling is required at the neck, waist, and on my model, left hand (one without the club) and on the rock base of the right foot.

The sculpt is beautiful and the amount of detail is almost impossible to picture with a myriad of tiny cuts and flicks to provide excellent texture.

There are two visible moldlines from the head that go down the shoulders and across the side of the hands and also down the sides of the legs. Very easy to clean up.

The entire model is quite light for it's size but solid with the base having good balance (it did not tip over when dryfitted and left to stand for half an hour on it's base.)

Did I mention it's huge? Archaon only reaches it's groin.

Three questions:

1) Are any of these pieces limited or will they always be available for purchase in the near future? (near being for the next few months)

2) Will Ultraforge sculpts always be large sized?

3) In relation to (2) are there any plans to make more Wood Elf figurines like Dryads or Glade Riders - like the non-large miniatures?

Hey Sophia.

Went through all of the pics/comments. IMO, your work is brilliant. Why nobody has come up with a female 'Ent' before is beyond me. LOTR players, Fantasy, all must be drooling right now!!!.

I would love to see some 'Raptor' style mounts, for cavalry uses??

It seeems to be one of t6he few figs out there, or I am not looking on the Net hard enough....

Such excellent sculpts, for the price, puts into perspective how much money GW makes, and how it looks after it's customers.(Rant)

Agreed about GW. and some raptor mounts, like alternatives for the new stupid looking cold ones would be an amazing add. For my lizardmen i'd prolly need like 20 of em'

Wow, those are some pretty wicked looking Raptors - and the riders aren't half-bad either.

Wow, Thanks for the great reviews Solasun and sleazy! I keep forgetting to mention that we do most of the cleaning and gap filing on the minis before sending them out. This makes it a little easier getting to the fun parts: painting and playing! We use the recycled paper padded envelopes and foam as opposed to boxes and stuffing to make things a little more environmentally friendly. I would LOVE to see pics of those giants all painted up and perhaps we could even include them on the website? Thanks again for the great reviews.

As for the dragon, there are actually some pics and information in this new thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/208752.page

There are some pictures there and I would appreciate any reviews and criticism as we want to make this mini the best we can.

For Vascariz: All the Ultraforge peices will be fairly big for about the next four or five minis to come. Then we may get into smaller stuff. We just love doing the big centerpiece type units as they really turn heads at the local game night and are a lot of fun. All the Ultraforge minis will run for about 200 casts or so, so they will probably be available for the next few months as long as they don't sell out. We want to keep our minis semi-rare. We are strongly considering doing some big tree brutes and smaller sexy female Dryads since the Treewoman needs an army but we would not be able to sculpt these things until closer to summer.

For Bastirous666: You will be happy to know that we are sending in the classic Treelord for a re-cast at the same time as when we send in the dragon... which will be in a few weeks. He will even be upgraded with some new deadly claws and a new scenic base with loads of skully bits. This is mainly for personal reasons since he is my favorite mini. Oh yeah!

I am also very much into the idea of creating new mounts, especially chariots since they are so much fun to see on the table, but those are all things we have to put into planning. Coming up is the 4 new demons, the dragon, the classic Kool Aid Treelord... and we have begun sculpting up 3 more demons even! That is a lot of work for only two people so we thank you very much for your patience and excellent input and ideas... and most importantly your support.

Well obviously it's a huge leap in aesthetics and should be positive news in economics for your business too. Interesting indeed. As with all crafts, practise makes perfect and you clearly have the talent, so I am quite excited where the next leap takes you and your work.

I actually saw the Treewoman somewhere, but failed to totally make any connection to your previous work.

Thanks for sharing,

I'd love to post some pictures of the beast so far, alas my nation seems adverse to having a calm clear day and I can't paint rope or wood very well! I'll keep my eyes open though.

I find it interesting to hear that you've only done a run of 200 or so. Will you be doing any after that? It sort of makes me feel special that I'm the only one in my local miniature circle to even have heard of Ultraforge.

That is exactly the point I think. I love Ultraforge miniatures being rare, and I am sure that even if we did cast up another hundred or so you would still be the only person at your local game store with one. It is like having a very custom mini for a fraction of the price of a commissioned sculpt. Until we hire a whole company of sculptors I feel that Ultraforge will always be that super-rare company and we like it that way. We probably will re-cast another run of the more successful mnis and replace old minis with newer and better ones when we can. We just want to apply customer feedback and have the best catalog we can.

I love the idea of the centrepiece to my army being a bit rare. I can't wait for the game when I plop my giant down on the table to cries of WTF!!??!!

.. I just have to paint up 150 or so gobbos first (maybe a trial run in my chaos force first?).

My Giant arrived this morning. May I jump on the bandwagon and say how excellent it is, definately on par with Forgeworld stuff in general, and actually better than the current FW Giant that is out.

A question to those at Ultraforge. Are you planning on any sci-fi releases? I would love to see some futuristic stuff. I realise that there is a greater demand for fantasy things since dragons and the like are not the IP of GW while Space Marines are, but I'm sure you could think of something. Maybe a few gothic buildings, tanks or cyborgs (who may look like but are definately not the Skitarii )

Well, the giant Demons all scream "Forgeworld Daemon Lord Proxy" to me.
Kinda funny, if you think about it. Usually, your proxys are a cheaper, less impressive model than the original. In this case, it's a cheaper, MORE IMPRESSIVE model.

Bah, just strap a wooden barrel around that giant and staple a cannon to his head and you got dreadnought.

Just wanted to add that I think the new giant is great, and the treewoman is an absolutely beautiful sculpt. It's nice to see a female miniature that actually looks like a woman and not a deformed Barbie doll.

Oh, I do like the old stuff too, by the way, especially the old treeman. I can definitely see how your style has evolved (for the better, I think) but the older stuff is definitely good too.

Sorry about the deadpan sarcasm. I was just trying to
encourage people not to paw at someone on an Internet
forum.

Of course that would invalidate the entire existence of The
Wasteland, but there's an actual rule about it here which
is to be nice/not to be rude.

Speaking of the Hydra, how many heads is it going to have? Also, will there be an option to add more heads?
