Lasguns and their many uses @ 2008/05/16 10:22:17

Post by: Cheese Elemental

Someone brought this topic up on the local FLG, and I'm spreading the word to Dakka! This is a humor thread, but I feel it belongs here, like the angry marines topic. Help me describe just HOW BAD lasguns are.

1. Shining in your friend's eye to annoy him.
2. A cricket bat.
3. The bayonet can be used as a butterknife, if sharpened.
4. Warming soup.
5. When left on, a seat warmer in your Leman Russ.
6. Roasting marshmallows, if rapidly fired.
7. Scraping your name in the sand on Tallarn.
8. Picking your nose.
9. A backscratcher.
10. Reaching out to press the power button on your TV.
11. Opening Coke cans.
12. Picking locks.
13. Cleaning out your ears.
14. A laser pointer.
15. If several are combined, you can make toast.

Feel free to add other uses for the previously useless-for-combat lasgun.

Give it to a Conscript (one of 50) and watch the laser light show

then laugh as the last remaining man rolls double one for his morral check manages to kill a terminator with his lasgun ... look on in amazement as he's charged by the squad and kills a further terminator ... then be scared as the other terminators miss him, faill their moral test and run away but find they're Trapped and they die or give up or something ... amazingly lucky but i don't think my conscripts have ever killed more people in game (i tend to just use them as way of blocking my flank)

I've found that Lasguns can be deceivingly powerful. The other day I was playing my Tau army against my friends Imp. Guard. It was four normal Guardsmen with Lasguns against my HQ Which was one Shas'O Crisis Suit and two Shas'vre Crisis body guards.

My friend: "Okay I get 4 lasgun shots."

Me: *Uncontrollable laughter*

He proceedes to kill one shield drone and put 2 wounds on my Shas'O.

Me: "ARE YOU S****ING ME!?"

My friend: *Uncontrollable laughter*

I did see a las gun kill a terminator. But i think it just went in his eyes and he cried off the field. But it makes a good shaver if mixed with one's shaving foam rations. Then its useful for burning off any unseen hairs to have the perfect shave.

No doubt the only way it would kill a Termie is if it shone in his eye, made him cry, and he drowned in his own tears.

How about using the las-gun as the most efficient infantry weapon ever created; cheap to make, with a large ammuntion capacity and an ability to regenerate ammunition through solar power, regular charge ports and thermal energy. Powerful enough to remove a man's arm, yet divorced from supply trains and, with next to no moving parts, easily repairable and maintainable. Almost perfectly accurate in normal conditions, completely unaffected by gravity, and with a built in tracer, it can fire on multiple power settings, in semi-auto and (on some models) fully automatic. With only a few real variants in the entirety of the galaxy and almost all of them running on standard 19 megathule power packs, the parts and power packs for these weapons are fairly standardized, removing a massive element of organization during massive crusades or campaigns. It cannot be tracked by the rounds they fire and can be converted into sniper rifles, battle rifles, submachine guns, carbines and assault weapons with simple kits. Frankly, it might just be the best weapon ever invented, even if the grunts using it don't feel that way.

Yeah, it may be all of that, but it's still a flashlight that may occasionally cause cancer. (Except in Dan Abnett's stories, where lasguns are blowing the heads off of Marines and taking down Dreadnoughts :S)

I think las guns in the board game SUCK compared to the books. Yes in the books everyone loves the little torch. But on the board game you can have so many that if they were stronger we would all be playing guard in place of marines. Think of it. 50 men for 1 troop choice? The Enemies need some hope people!

Lasguns and their many uses @ 2008/06/09 14:00:59

Post by: Storm Lord

Thats because in the book it wouldn't be as fun like this:
Imperial monkey 1: "Enemies are coming"
Imp Monkey 2: "Fire your lasguns at them"
Comissar: "Hold the lines and keep firing!"
Imp Monkey 1: "Its no good, its just making them mad"
Imp Monkey 2: "They're not even getting blinded now!"
*they all wet themselves and die when the orks hit them*

Not so good that way is it?

I would love a las gun, so i could annoy my neighbours with its constant whining. Even space marines use las guns during battles (read the Blood Angels series, one of them runs out of heavy bolter ammo and gets stuck with a las pistol as a replacement.) In the books the las gun is ever so slightly feared.

True, except for one small niggling detail; weapons do damage. The last time I checked, a flashlight, even if waved in an angry and menacing manner, fails to meet those criteria.

Against night lords, it could hurt thier morale
Nightlord 1: "Ah light!"
Nightlord 2: "Damn Imperium, how can we fight them in the light."
Nightlord 1: "Lets go until they run of of Batteries!"
Nightlord 2: "I agree, lets go"

And another victory for the Imperial Guard!

There is no other victory.... Only in death they will prevail.

Lasguns are here to give guardsmen the illusion they could get weapons, but the real ones
were to expensive so the administratum decided to replace with a toygun.

But it is a Amazing gun in Fluff and some times in the game.

It should be AP- ST 4 at least (If you read fluff youd now why)

15 Hours- they Butcher Orks with them(and Artie)
Abnett- They kill everything
Others-Do good
Dark Crusade-Kill a Marine Squad before they reach me.

Maybe, but if you beleive all the fluff then the Impeium has a bright prosperous future whilst being destroyed by xeno. Doesn't always pan out.

usable for playing-who can shine the dot at the commanders crotch area longest without him noticing/burning a hole in his trousers. (Note: do not play if commander is not wearing trousers for safety reasons)

I've got it! Lasguns are a terror weapon. Think about it, laser dot sights are usually suck to really big and nasty guns, so they see all the guard firing laser dots at them they may think that they actually have alot more biggger guns and that if they take aim the lasgun (now believed by the enemy to be the marker for a large and nasty bolter or something) makes them run off before they get fired upon.

Good one... maybe if they had the backup of a baneblade. IG can't do over 4,000 damage before marines (who have a longer range) reach them.
Abnett exaggerates in his novels... sif a lasgun can take down a dreadnought. Orks I can understand, as they have crap-all armour.

about lasguns being more powerful in the fluff i think its true
because of the way a lasgun works when it goes into a body it makes a cut all the way through in the axact diameter to the round
so it is very powerful it just doesnt cause the massive collateral damage that a boltgun does so the person being shot will have a hole through them but will still be able to operate at least until the end of the game
if im being stupid sorry

Actually if you fire a bolt gun at point blank range it will go staight though them, as it explodes 0.001 seconds after impact and at point blank range it travels fast enough to go through a person and explode 2.5 feet behind them, maybe in another person.

just add "unarmoured" to.
If hit armor, the shots are delayed long enough to explode inside.

If an Imperial Monkey fired it wouldn't it dislocate/break his arm, seeing as a lot of force is behind it? If so, I think the bolter shell going throught the enemy is the least of their worries at that time

No,boltpistols and bolters are only available to humans because their arm did not break from firing.

The possibility to dislocate or break limbs is neglible compared to missing.
Main users are Marines and they shouldnt lack the strength.

Laser energy dissipates when hitting and therefore its no shoot " 3 in a row" .
Massive shells do already penetrate multiple targets if their kinetic force is high enough.

If you try a lascannon there is no more "head"

only imperial guns kick you (if not holding em right)....

Yes there will be a head sized hole in the person's brain, at least it wouldn't gush blood.

You need a person with really Big head and a brain bigger than the head to achieve this result .

Its the fault of the munitorum.
They should equip a squad with 1 flashlight per lascannon but issued 10 flashlight and 1 lascannon.
Guard just misunderstood the targeter(flashlight)for a lascannon as a infantry-weapon.

I have a feeling the Guard would be much stronger if their lasguns had laser pointers, then they all have twin-linked lasguns, so they get twice as many shots and that terror weapon bonus would be doubled to...-200 Ld!

Thats why they are used as a meat shield in front of armies, using guard means a 5 times less likely chance of dying.

A chance of dying? Its a honor and a duty to die for the emperor!

A chance of not dying ? To "survive" as undead ?

So ... its the fearless Officer,leading by example, (and got shot for it), that receives this chance;
...or the grumpy Commissar,always to "back up" his men, (lurkin behind you), that benefits from this;
... or its the weird psyker, the fanatic preacher, the supply-truck-driver ....or else ?

OK grotz and some nids are meatshields, the imperial guardsmen is not!

Tactica Imperialis FTW

But every army needs a meat shield. Except Necrons as they have no meat. Maybe Flayed ones count though. Eldar have guardians, maybe conscripts would work as meat shields.

The marines meatshields are (loyal or traitor) =
The demons meatshields are =

Not enough meatshields i'll found there :S

Marines are too poor to afford IG meatshields, so they use scouts like my friend. He has four scout squads who are meatshields for his Termies. Wearing a bible/holy book of the emperor would work, but since daemons are chaos, I suppose they wear the Necronomicon over their hearts.

4 scout squadz are min 360 pts to "meat"shield termies!
He must have 1 termie per wscout to do so

If they catch fire just charge at the enemy after emptying the Tanks fuel all over them... and watch future opponents faces when the guard produce a lighter

main ice-cream distributor is the predator annihilator with lascannon sponsons

new defensive weapons for 5th ed : ice cream gun S4/ap 1/soft&creamy 10W6/apocalyptic blast template

In my past game, lasguns put the final wounds on both of my opponents daemon princes.... and that's only firing 3 of them at each one...... never underestimate the power of a lasgun to the eye.

Lasguns and their many uses @ 2008/07/06 21:54:16

Post by: Space_hoppo

Aye that happens alot. Like the 3rd Ed fexs and rants when they only had a 5+ Invunerable. Always in a game there is the one off las gun shot.

Lasguns and their many uses @ 2008/07/06 22:58:41

Post by: Eisenkeil

Well whatever ... at least the lasgun has no recoil and there are 3 on each side on a chimera ...
... besides
with the new ed it isn't that bad ... imagine you plan to fire while moving, you have your multilaser, storm bolter / heavy stubber and 3 Lasrifles.
So the las is to blinding them for several seconds by shooting into their eyes. the multilaser is to make them angry by causing minor gangrenous spots and the storm bolter to make them real angry ... well ... this sounds like a plan to me xD

Ice cream gun special rule:
Any non-vehicle model hit by the template must roll a D6. If they roll higher than their toughness, they suffer Instant Death due to brain freeze. Vehicles instead suffer a stunned hit as the crew enjoy the icy treat.
