I have to say that I was pleasently surprised when my daughter, at age 6months, would hold a model in her hand and coo happily.
I was also pleased(and a little frustrated) when, at a year and a half I couldn't paint for ten minutes without her trying to steal a model, or dice, or templates, or a measuring tape. It got so bad that to distract her I would set her up a little flat area and let her roll d6's to her hearts content...and she was SCARY good at rending.
Now that she is three, I am bursting with paternal pride that the only way I can get her to behave, is if I threaten to not let her paint with me when I get home from work! She has a very artistic spirit, and I am more than happy to cultivate it, and spend good quality father/daughter time by painting with her every night.
Well, the other day she was so proud of her work that I told her I would show it to the world....
So here it is, the debut of the first GW mini, painted wholey by my daughter Savannah.
Comments are welcome, but I warn you, if you make her cry I'll find you a'la Jay + Silent Bob!!!

Good for you! My son has recently started his ork army (he's 7). This caused a little jealousy with my 11 year old daughter til I showed her some old White Dwarf mags. Her favorite color is purple so her Ty army will be pink and purple like the old genstealers.
Think of how many times you go to your GW store and people play with primed armies......keep encouraging her. She's already painted more then almost half of the people I play! If she likes it thats all that matters.

I remember my first figures, a pair of plastic rogue trader Mk6 space marines. I painted them gold and silver, with red eyes, and red shoulder pad spots I think.

I've been letting my 7 yo nephew help but his 3yo brother gets jealous. We were painting one time and he suddenly says "Why are zack's hands all silvery?" the 3 yo decided to dump mithril silver all over my freshly painted black tank luckily I caught it as it happend and washed it off real quick before it started to set. Scared the kid though, he ran screaming for mommy, who ended up getting silver hand prints all over her jeans.

Some of you may have heard this before...
My (now 10) year old daughter had been bugging me since she was 4 to "paint guys" with me.
Finally, at 5, I put her off by saying i'd start showing her how at 10.
Five freaking years and she NEVER forgot.
At 7 or 8 I gave her an old paint pallette, some ruined old prushes and "throw away" minis for her to "pretend paint." basically, i was getting her used to holding a brush and mini.
It was the cutest dang thing, too. She'd spend a half hour or so "painting," then bring it to me to ask what I thought. She'd tell me what colors she used where & point out all the little details she'd painted and everything. It was genius. To my eyes, every one was a Golden Demon winner, too!
Well, she turned 10 in March. For her birthday she got a SLEW of "Ceramcoat" brand paints (Wonderful acrylic paints marketed towards ceramics painters), some ceramic pieces to start on, some brushes and paint pallettes.
I just asked her last night if she wanted to learn how to play 40K. My heart swelled with joy when she leapt to the ceiling and yelled, "Yes!"
I'll be buying a couple of AoBR boxes. She starts playing (and painting) Space Marines in the fall.
I swear, that has NOTHING to do with my desire to start an ork horde, either.
Nothing what-so-ever.

Congrats dude...I also have a couple sons that are brand new as well....I think I'll hold off until they can at least hold their heads up by themselves before they start. Its sad really, (now keep in mind I'm a tad biased), my daughter is ridiculously smart, and I'm afraid to teach her to play the game when she's old enough because I keep having this vision of a little blonde head, barely seeing over the tabletop, looking at me with disgust and saying... "Daddy, that wasn't tactically sound." her Ty army will be pink and purple ahem....thats 'blush and bashful' That's great. Keep at it, soon you will have your own army painting slave! With the twins, I'm gunna have my own little sweatshop. One person's quality family time is another's violation of child labor laws!

My son is a year and a half old and loves to climb into my chair and take a brush and a miniature and just sit there tapping the brush on top of the paint jars and "paint" the mini. Really funny.
Soon he will be old enough to help tackle that growing pile of miniatures I have.

Daddy's unite! I think that Terminator looks great...better than I could do a couple years ago!
I taught my daughter 2 things since birth:
1) Daddy is the boss (wife is VERY jealous she didn't think of this)
2) Daddy's toys are very breakable
She never touches them unless I give her permission. Of course I let her, I want her to get into it. She likes to sit on my lap and watch while I build or paint. I did some Nids recently, and she saw them and said 'Oooooh Daddy!' so I figure they are passable She also bugs me to bring her to my gaming group on Wednesday nights, and when she gets a wee bit bigger I will. I think this weekend I am going to let her paint some of Daddy's "Scary Faces" (Orks!). She is 3.5, probably ready to paint by now.
Let's hear more Daddy and Mommy stories!

Mines 16 months old and in the "stealing paint pots and models while I paint" stage. She instinctively knows which model is metal and the pointiest and refuses to be distracted by old miniatures I dont care about I caught her walking around the house with an open pot of chaos black while I was watching the olympics last week, miraculously didnt get any on the carpet. Better if the wife doesnt know these things.
Phrases like "honey she's got the gun off your rhino again" are quite common in our household. Wouldnt have it any other way and hope she wants to paint too.

My son will be turning 4 in a month. Since he was 2, he has been begging me to play "army guys." I keep telling him when he is older. Every time I tell him he is big boy, he asks if he can play warhammer yet.
Once, when I went out, he wanted to set at my paint table to paint and build models like daddy. The problem was, that there was an open box holding all my eldar and Dark Eldar on it. Need less to say, the handles he used to pull himself up were my boxes, which then flew to the ground, smashing my Dark Eldar army into hundreds of pieces.
He always sits on my lap to look at "army guys" on here or GW. For Christmas, I asked him what he wanted to look at, and he sad "Bad Guys." We looked at all the Chaos models, and he said I want those (Khorne Berzerkers). Needless to say, he got some for Christmas and after two months of begging dad to put them together, he had them to play with. But then he smashed them all to nothingness.
I can't wait till he is old enough to play. I have a fear though that he will throttle me. I have also let him roll dice to play 10 Marines versus 10 Berzerkers. Needless to say, they Dice Gods love him, and I died to pistol shots.
Lots of Good stories, keep them up.

When my son was 3 (almost 4) years old he liked to join me when i was painting.... I usually give him a plastic marine, and some watered black paint and let him paint-prime it while I concentrated on other tasks...
...one day y was so much concentrated i didn’t realize he has just finished priming his marine... so he got bored.... and he started to "prime" whatever he could reach from his chair... the table, the chair itself, his hands, etc etc etc... when I finished painting the last details in my Grey Knights Land Raider and paid him a little attention almost half the room was black-primed!!!!
I got a good laugh about it, but my wife wasn’t that much joyful when she discovered the disaster…

We just started playing 40k this past year, mainly because my 12 year old son was interested (and I was looking for an excuse to take it up ). My youngest son, who was 6 at the time, bought a box of Necron warriors with some money he'd saved up, and we showed him how to dry brush them:
My 9 year old daughter likes the way the Tyranid Gargoyles look, so she's started painting some of those to match my fledgling army. It really is great fun to have them all working at the table with you. If my 4 year old was showing any interest, I'd have her in there too.

Just block colors. A year later i won a battalion for empire and i ended up collecting over 4,000 points of empire. Then i got 500 points of 40k orks off a yard sale.

I don't have kids yet, but my little brother is showing real talent and did this when he was 11 as his first model. I can't believe how accurate he was with the eyes for example.

I haven't pushed him at all, and the few years I was doing my MAs in London, he'd assembled everythng, painted everything we had primed and memorised the entire Necron Codex. Now he is taking part in Jade Vessel, and we've made deal that every time he finishes all the models he has, I'll buy him new ones. Black Reach is next of course.

So, while we're all talking about teaching our kids to paint and game, I have a question.
If I need to post this ina new thread, say the word. Otherwise:
Do you LET your kids win? Why or why not?
If "No;" Do you "take it easy" on them?
I never have and never WILL let my kids win. It's not an ego thing. It's a "get used to it" thing. I want my kids to learn to be good losers AND winners. Letting them win will NOT help them to deal with their eventual losses. Aditionally... they're not stupid. They'll figure out you're letting them win and THAT is not good. They need to know that, when they win, they earned it.
I do, however, tend to take it easy on them... for a while, anyway.
When I taught my oldest Mordheim, Magic & Pokemon (::shudder: , I went easy on him... didn't trounce him but also didnt give him the game. I did that until he had a firm grasp of the rules... then, it was no holds barred. I played against him like I would anyone else. When he won, he was absolutely ELATED... because he KNEW he earned it.
What do/will YOU do?
Eric

I take it easy one them. They're only 5, so haven't quite learned all the tactical nuaces of the game.

You get a pass on that one. Probably on "letting them win," too.
I guess I was more thinking of older kids.. Say, 9 and up.
My youngest, for example, is 10. She'll get an easy battle, but nothing will be "given" to her.

I have a 7 year old and a 16 year old.. both girls.
Teenager WILL NOT play minis with dad.. she will happily lose to me in Magic.. but will not touch models.. "Too complicated"
the youngest wipes the floor with me .. in Pirates (Wizkids) .. specifically the Caribbean expansion (she loves the movies).. and the chance to beat Dad (English) with her beloved Jack and Elizabeth is always seized upon.
One of my issues is a rather strong competitive streak. I WILL take it easy on the kids (or wife) but eventually there comes a time when gloves are off. I moderate it as much as I can..
Reminds me of when I taught my girlfriend (now wife) to play Magic.. I won every game.. she could not bring herself to "hurt" me in the game.. until I beat her again and again.. and she got mad. THEN her competitive urges kicked in.. and kicked my hiney back.
However, all of my ladies just do not have the drive to game as I do.. sigh.. well.. maybe the youngest.. (crossing fingers)
I will have to post a pic of some minis they have painted.

When it comes time to teach her, I will not let her win, I will go as easy as possible so that she isn't discouraged, but if she's anything like her mother...and she is....her competitive streak will be off the charts.
My parents never let me win, and that is why I believe that to this day I strive to win.
Incedentally, after six years of marital bliss, my wife now refuses to play scrabble, monopoly, risk, and trivial pursuit alone with me. She says its because it changes the odds, I say its so that there are witnesses if she decides to shank me!!

Hmm, well my brother started off with Battle for Macragge when he was 7, I was twelve at the time and had bought myself the Fellowhip of the Ring boxset to I started with LOTR and started with 40k. However after seeing how much fun my brother and mom where having playing 40k I switched over for the most part. As for painting however. He is lightyears ahead of me, and even more he enjoys it immensly. (frankly I don't, so I pay him to paint me models for me) As for a family event, my older sister who got us into wargaming paints but doesn't play woodelves, dark elves and other models that catch her fancy. My dad thinks we are all nuts but likes to build the tables and terrain that we play on, my mom likes to trounce us with her nidzilla list, and my brother paints for me and plays Space Wolves and Brettonians. I play an army from all three major systems...
Pretty much my family is a big collection of nerds. A tradition wich will most likely be passed on. (Seeing as my older sisters boyfriend plays Orks.)

I do know a family of 5 where they all play, fantasy and 40k. I forget who plays what but it's Tomb Kings, Wood Elves, Empire, Vampire Counts and Dark Elves. 40k it's Necrons, Eldar, Marines, Daemonhunters, and Nids I think.

I was at a tourney with around half of a family the other day I am pretty sure nearly half the people there were related or good friends.
Good times man I played with a guy that was about 18 or so and his dad; his dad was really good about helping his son out to keep the game in a consistent flow. I hate to say it but I was a bit jealous , he even checked on his son when he was playing on another team. This was a 2v2 750 point random team tourney, great stuff.
One thing I would recommend to make sure a kid doesn't get an army and just forget about it.
Get the kid the minimum troops and HQ choices for a legal game. Then play in a store where they allow proxies (I personally am not a fan of stores that do not) and build or borrow the rest of the army so they can get good sized armies into games, perhaps a tourney if they are old enough (5 years old is... ridiculous for a tourney, I am sorry). You can build transports/vehicles for most armies, that at the very least are to general spec. and have one coat of primer on them; most clubs will have absolutely no problem letting a kid field something like this; and the fact is if they really have a problem with it, you can expect some serious problems at that club.

JediRaptor wrote:I have to say that I was pleasently surprised when my daughter, at age 6months, would hold a model in her hand and coo happily.

This is the coolest thing I have ever heard. Your daughter rocks.
And her painting ability- I was digging through some of my old models, the ones I painted when I started playing when I was 8, and I can honestly say your daughter paints better than I did. She probably paints better than I did till I turned 14 or so. If you give her afew years, you'll probably gave a golden daemon painter living at your house.

I started around age 10, so she'll have a strong head start on all of us.

NO!!!
to playing 40k
Sounds like you need to invest in Warhammer Fantasy then.
My wife and I play Warmachine more than anything, but we've already decided that Fairy Meat is the game we'll teach our children first.
Of course, there are tons of games to teach your wife. Check out things like Infinity, Anima Tactics, Monsterpocalypse and Blood Bowl.

My oldest son(seven) preparing to crush my SOB with his orks:
We are planning to start painting them this summer as a father/son project.
My youngest just turned four and loves messing about with my models and watching my game group play. The other day i walk into the tv room and find my wife and him sitting on the couch. He is flipping through one of the small AOBR rulebooks intently.
When i ask him what he is doing he replies: "I'm trying to find Sicarius"
My wife asked "are you proud of yourself that you have created a new generation of nerds"?

Wow...I thought this thread to be dead and bloated, but thanks to everyone who 'manced it and still have nice things to say.
Lately, I am a little disappointed in my daughter, all she wants to do is paint them pink. I guess she'll grow out of it.

That's awesome! She'll probably have this ridiculously fantastic painted army by the time she's ten, or even before that. I'm currently painting up 3 Necrons to help corrupt my young Nephew. Mwa--ha-ha-ha-ha!

My son started playing right before he turned nine he’s 12 now and knows the rules inside and out. He can compete and hold his own with the top tier players around the area (he took 2nd in the ardboyz turny last year at the LGS). He just started showing an interest in painting this summer and hopefully it will come as easy to him as playing the game.

I shall avoid angry girlfriends with the following the method...
To find a girlfriend I shall sit in a hobby store for hours until somebody i would go out with comes in and buys 40k models.
Its a perfect plan, ha ha ha

NoBanjo wrote:We just started playing 40k this past year, mainly because my 12 year old son was interested (and I was looking for an excuse to take it up ).
Nothing better than necrons for me and these are looking good
