Dark Angels army project rises from depths (update 1/28) @ 2008/08/22 03:30:13

Post by: Old Man Ultramarine

I have commissioned my friend, Dakka's no1vampire, to paint my huge Ravenwing/Deathwing army. I've been doing all the modeling and reasonable conversions. I will add more in coming days. Currently in middle of battle vs. Necrons @ 1150 pts. Look for that battle report in day or so......

For starters.....

I can see from the speeder and attack bike that your flash is making the other bikes' paintjobs look gritty and gray. Try photoing with natural light instead.

Like the standard, can't wait to see it installed!

My only criticism is that the libby might use a bit less blue and a bit more Deathwing colors, just to make him fit in more. But that's just my opinion about the libby colors being standard anyways.

Looks very nice,
I love the speeder and the interchangable weapons,
Well done.

That standard is always a great one for deathwing,
I'm going to have to get one as well soon.

Good job,
keep the posts coming

I really like the 3 bikes,
I've been looking to do a standard for my ravenwing for quite a while and yours has come out very nicely.

Also a quick question:
Is there background to the Ork's on the bases or just because it looks cool?

Good job,
keep em coming!

I have 2 friends who play Orks, with a 3rd who may start. Throughout fluff DA's have cleansed the Imperium of the filth known as the Ork.

And yes it looks cool.

Coming soon..... Deathwing with forgeworld shoulder pads.

Current record with Ravenwing 3-1-1 @ 1150pts
Necrons....tabled him on turn 5
Orks.....tabled them on turn 6
Tyranids(stealer shock).......I was tabled on turn 7
trait Space Marines.....tabled him on turn 6
Chaos.....draw, store was closing on turn 3

What size bases were you using for yoru bikes? Looks like the larger circle bases. I like it, give you more room for diarama possibilities. Though, what is up with all the servo skulls on the bases on the front of the bases? Is that for squad markings or is there a mandate with the Raven Wing that all Servoskulls run along the along the ground infront of bikes and infantry?

Dark Angels army project rises from depths (update 1/28) @ 2008/08/26 01:37:45

Post by: Old Man Ultramarine

Bases are 40mm round base (Terminator) and 40mm square base (fastasy large creature). I cut round in half and hot glued to square base. Plenty of room for diorama.

Servo skulls are there for recording the actions I have taken to rid Imperium of Xenos scum.

Had some Termnators returned today. Mixed reactions, mostly the bases. I will clean up and post my progress, but here is what I have.

This is 15 of 35 I'm getting done. It's being done a bit rushed due to 'Ard Boyz.

Well I received another 11 terminators. I'm very happy with results. First batch had a cloudy effect come from clear coat.

I have 2 or 3 more squads to be done yet. 7 cyclone missile launchers and 7 heavy flamers for switch outs of the assault cannon.

I wanted alot of magnetized arms so I can switch between shooty and assaulty DW. Storm bolters are coming

Next up on Thursday night the standard (at top of page), the Master of Deathwing, Master of Ravenwing on his Landspeeder, and terminator Apothecary. I really can't wait.

Yet to be completed.....2 full Ravenwing bike squads (6 bikes, attack bikes, landspeeder tornado each) and 2 full Ravenwing support squads (3 landspeeders, 1 typhoon, 1 tornado each)....I will be painting them,

Sidenote....I'm about 15 landspeeders short of full Ravenwing company. Being called out by my DA friend to finish it.

GW, hear my pleading. Give DA's the FAQ/errata update soon. I want the FnP Apothecary and 2 shot CML

Well I received another 11 terminators. I'm very happy with results. First batch had a cloudy effect come from clear coat.

There are two fixes I know of for this. I've never used either but I know someone who tried the second one and it worked perfectly for him.

1) Spray it with a coat of gloss sealer, then a coat of matte sealer -if you use matte.
(What happens with the haziness is that the sealant didn't dry properly becuse it was done in a humid environment. The haziness you see is actually imperfections in the sealer. Sealing over it is said to fill in those imperfections.)

2) Spray them with superglue accellerant.
(I don't know why this works)

Eric

Brace yourselves. I pulled out the paintbrush and painted up 2 AoBR Dreads......

Some little touches need to be done.

Primed white, hard painted chainmail, Devlan Mud wash, Gyphonne Sepia washed armor, drybrushed Bleached Bone. DA icons Chainmail and Malachite Red, Washed with da Mud.

I'm in middle of finishing up repainting bases of termies and bikes. Will be priming up a Land Raider and x2 Drop Pods. The statisfaction of painting my own stuff has me inspired to paint like a mad man over the next couple months.

More pics coming this weekend.....

The banner has come out very nice. I was doubting whether or not it would look too clumsy, but in the hands of that termie, and painted, it looks very nice!

The dreads look nice, but you´re right, they need more detailing. The white is looking real good!

Your usage of white is flawless, especially with the biker in white power armor, truly an inspiration.

Dark Angels army project rises from depths (update 1/28) @ 2008/10/02 05:08:01

Post by: Old Man Ultramarine

@ Ratbarf..... I have 5000 pts of DA's, yet none in power armor on foot. 15 landspeeders short of having entire Ravenwing. 51 DW Terminators, 3 Dreads, 3-5 Land Raiders, and 3 drop pods.

Pictures of all coming as I get completed.

@Faux Pas......Sadly I can't lay claim to bikes or Terminators. I did model everything and fix up the bases after they were returned. My buddy did the painting.

I did the Dreads, first models I painted in some 5+ years, I plan on adding Dark Angels icons and maybe some more purity seals. I have to magnetize the arm sockets to field other weapon lay outs. AoBR Dread arms pegs are smaller than standard kit.

I caught the fever to paint. Very enjoyable, but that may pass with the amount of stuff I have.

Picture retake with natural light.

Still have some work to get these guys finished. Damn that sand on base rims. Adding little standards to 6 of the Terminators. Have 7 more CML's coming.

Ravenwing needs alot of help. I have to redo bases on all speeders and both versions of Sammael Broke the plastic stems

Updated for your pleasure.

You may make me want to finish painting the 2500-ish of Dark Angels I still have to paint(Plenty of Termies including Belial, Helios, another command squad, rhinos, some Ravenwing, some Dreads) to go with the 7500-ish I already have done. Seeing all that bone makes me fear painting bone myself a little less.

My guy won't tell me the recipe.

I can assume prime white, some sort of yellowish wash, bleach bone drybrush.

3500+ pts of DW
2000+ pts of RW

I have 3 Land Raiders, 2 drop pods and 3 Dreads in DW colors. Don't know how much more I want to build.

Interesting note.....No power armored DA's on foot. All RW and DW or vehicle.

Big picture update coming Sat. night.

Redid all the Ravenwing bases. Need to add grass and some minor touch-ups

Deathwing bases got repainted. 3 squads of 5 have their arms glued solid. Going to bust them off and magnetize. All my terminators will then have magnetized arms.

Drop pod needs to be drybrushed and assembled. A 2nd one needs to be painted.

Land Raider #1 needs paint. #2 and #3 are under consideration to be built.

Stay tuned.....

After a 3 month hiatus I dig this back up.....

Forgive the thread Necromancy.

The Ravenwing needed some fire support in the form of 3 vindicators.

I re-did bases, added Ravenwing squads 3 and 4, and added 3 vindicators. I have minor work like drill some weapons holes, add grass to bases, possibly get 3 DW sgts painted up as I'm short, and 3 Land Raiders to finish and I'll call it a day on this army til new codex.

@ lvyoda Cloak is off Chaos termie Lord. I used small DA bits to add something to armor. Also, used thes bits on landspeeders, dreads and vindicators.

@ nidsmaster

This is a small guess of my expenses....

x6 Ravenwing battleforcees $90 each

x9 boxes of Terminators $50 each

x3 Vindicators $45 each

x2 AoBR Dreadnoughts $15 each

x3 Land Raiders $50 each

Bits for Terminators and Bikes at least $150

Forgeworld Terminator shoulder pads $176

Commissioned paint job by my friend $790

Enjoyment by me playing PRICELESS

Pictures never do justice. Army is really sharp and has been voted "best painted" in 2 of my last 4 tourneys.

I have 2 boxes of the Dark Angels veteran sprues, and I was wondering: did you use any of those? You must have, but I'm not entirely sure.

This looks really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really sweet. I really appreciate this a lot more than I would have, seeing as how I am a Dark Angels player.

As much as I want to claim the painting as mine, I can't my friend painted everything except the dreads.

Sammael was made from bits in DA battleforce box. Pretty much right off instructions how to make him included.

My guess on termie scheme. primed white, watered down bubonic brown wash, bleached bone drydrush. He then added detail and touch ups.

I have always played and painted Ultramarines. When I got back into 40k last year I discussed DA at length with my friend, (DAaddict on dakka). We thought the combo of DW/RW would be a great change up to the normal rhino rush tactics from 3rd, that we both used to great boredom. So I started the DA and recently my DA friend is thinking of doing Ultras, lol.

Interesting note....This is roughly 4700 pts of Dark Angels. There isn't any DA green power armor. Only green is the vindicators.

I have a disgusting amount of space marines to make my Ultramarine battleforce. I have gone back and forth on which chapter to make it, Dark Angels or Ultramarines.

Land Raiders are looking super-fly. I'm currently putting together a deathwing army, and this is the most substantial one I've seen. I was wondering: do you know of any good tutorials on magnetizing termie arms, or failing that feel like divulging a trade secret or two? =P

I use 1/8" x 1/32" magnets. Drill holes in center of arms and shoulders with dremel and 1/8" bit. glue magnets in with gel crazy glue. The key to this whole thing is to make sure you, one by one, match up magnets so they stick together and not push away. Time consuming, but worth it. I have system down and very easy to do.

Each of my Land Raiders have 28 magnets to attach sponsons and bits. A bit over-the-top, but I store them with piece of mind in their Army Transport case, that nothing will break off.

Very nice, your blog is inspiring, I am working on a Deathwing as well, and magnetizing all the arms. I am glad I found this, it is nice to see them all arrayed together.

Mecurial: I was planning on doing a tutorial on magnetizing, check out my blog next week, I hope to have it done then.

Updated...... I finally got to putting on squad markings. I used the shield that goes on left shoulder. I went up to 10 squads of 5 terminators. Tough to play 10 squads in normal games, there is always Apoc. Besides having half of Deathwing is cool.

More on tactical markings. My original plan was to use Forgeworld shoulder pads as tactical markings. That didn't work out so well, as I didn't let Don (painter) know of my plan. So they were slightly mixed up. Since I started playing DW keeping squads seperate was just brutal, so I got motivated and trimmed/accumulatd enough shields to come up with a fool proof system. 10 squads have shields with different scheme of paint, as you will see in pictures.

My last addition left me 1 Sgt. short for DW squad 10. I just about done with this project. A few things I'd like to do, yet. Add some plasma guns to RW bikes squads, make a power armored command squad for Apothecary spam, possibly make up x3 squads of techmarine/servitors for some heavy bolter shootiness.

More info...You may notice that I have some upper torso cyclones. I magnetized 6 termies at waist so I can switch out weapons. They are mixed throughout squads.

I redid Land raider pics, also

What I'm doing for Techmarines and servitors.

SM Scout legs, body, heavy bolter. SM devastator sgt head, vehicle sprue techmarine shoulder. Using scouts due to 4+ save and can be made in plastic.

Techmarine will be SM legs with vehicle upgrade torsos, shoulders, and heads off DA's sprue.

Plan is to do 3 Techmarines and 12 Heavy Bolter armed servitors.

Based on rules on page 82 of DA codex. May take a techmarine for each elite or heavy choices non dedicated transport. Can have up to 4 servitors each. My idea is to drop a dread or LR and also drop a psuedo- devastator squad.

Opinions on my thoughts always welcome.

...wow. That's a LOT of terminators.

I love the pose of the Belial dude, he looks like he's just about to f***ing impale someone. Excellent job on the company champion lower down as well, looks awesome.

A brief update....

I decided to use Ravenwing bikes to build a vanilla SM bike army. Regular SM just do it better.

Adding x2 Command squads, x2 tech marines, x2 attack bikes.

Should be 2 weeks or so when pictures available.

Coming to end of my Eldar army (13,000+ points) and want to get my SM army going. It has been sitting on back burner for a couple of years. I went back and forth on what chapter to build. My first army was Ultramarines back in 1998. After some feedback and discussion with friends, it's time to begin...

My plan for adding to existing Dark Angels.

-3 10 man Sternguard w/ 24 combi meltas and 6 combi flamers. Magnetized arms for possible switchouts, unknown options at this time.

-9 bikes for command squads with all the goodies (may give them new scout bikes to look different, painted as RW).

-2 Captains on bike and Techmarine on bike. Have itch to do a bike army via SM codex.

-6 10 man tactical squads w/ flamer and ML (will also have option for plasma gun, melta gun, lascannon, plasma cannon, heavy bolter, multi melta) So each tactical will be 16 man squads fully loaded. Options hurt!

-3 10 man devastator squads with 4 ML (will have option to switchout to x4 lascannons, x4 plasma cannons, x4 heavy bolters in each squad).

-3 10 man assault squads 1 with x2 PP's and x2 with x2 flamers (magnetizing jump packs for options).

-Ravenwing will get finished to 6 attack squads.

-Deathwing will get more TH/SS arms.

-Deathwing will get 3 more Land Raiders with options to be all normal variants

-2 Land Raiders will get green paint to reflect general issue. I will arm them as Godhammers with option to be Terminus, the 5 LC Apoc killer.

-6 rhinos will be setup to be 3 predators, annihilator or destructor, or 3 whirlwinds.

-Haven't figured how many rhinos or drop pods will be built. Probably 12 of each.

-Dreads...I have 2 Deathwing made from Black Reach. May build 2-3 more just to have.

-RW will get 7 more land speeders w/ options to make all variants.

(I already own all discussed, except 11 drop pods and 6 rhinos)

Thought is to robe up, from vet box, sternguard and sgts in battle company. Thought about doing whole army in robes, but that would be way over the top. Need grunts to fight like they mean it and not look like they just got out of bed.

Thought is to run Mk 6 "Corvus" armor. That being beakie head, greaved legs, and torso with hoses on chest, studded shoulder on left, as pictured in current SM codex page 20.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I plan on playing this as vanilla green marines til DA codex overhaul is more practical to use.

Always have option to play as DW/RW at any time.

Very nice plan, quite similar to mine. It's good to see another brother in arms(or robes, as the case may be). Looking forward to more pics.

He's a good man. Painted 22,000+ pts for me in last 2 years. He recently went back to work fulltime.

I'm a completist, sadly.

If you're a completionist, your mate must be pleased you didn't decide to go pre-heresy then. That really would be a heck of a lot of paint time.

Nice armies btw have check out some of your other stuff too.

Pre heresy legion = 100,000 marines? About $300,000 for just tactical marines. More for vehicles, characters, wargear, etc. I'd say maybe close to 1 million dollars for an entire legion?

I guess if everyone on dakka put all their spacemarines together then we might actully have an legion lol.

I am currently doing my deathwing only to 1750 points, planning on doing ravenwing 1750 points.

I am painting them myself but my 1750 points character heavy space wolf and sanguinary guard army are being painted by a golden demon finalist (3rd) for FREE. Its good to have friends.

I am currently in love with GK and have 5000 points.

1750 of purifers
1750 of paladins
3x dreadknight
1x the 5 Lascannon termis
1x dreamforge "GK titan"
6x complete forgeworld rhino upgrades
1x forgeworld dread

they are also being painted.

Then i am getting someone else to paint my other on going armies. I think I spent about $2500 in the last 6 months.
