So, the Ultramarines were so boring army that I couldn't continue to do them after one squad... I then moved to Flames of War stuff for awhile and started a Heavy Gear army too. Well, now I'm back to 40K and starting a new marine project. This time an old love, the Space Wolves!
Here's pics of the two test figs I built (the one in the middle is just a size comparison fig)
[EDIT]: Forgot to mention, these two are Grey Hunters.

You guys with your biggerizing projects. It almost makes me want to take up the GS and sculpting tools and take a crack at it. Almost.
Great work on what you've got so far. Nice to see some folks out there are more afflicted than I am in this hobby!
A whole army of true scaled marines is ridiculous and awesome. Migs and yourself are most definitely insane.

I've always had a thing for 'Rymdvargar' Marines (if that's the correct translation) and these
should be some kind of textbook example of how they should look. Great work!
As for biggerizing, would you mind going into detail on what exactly you do when you do this?
Are there any online tutorials or something that shows which parts to buff up or similar?
Oh, and keep it up!

I had this land speeder I had made for the ultramarines back then, which I now re-decorated a bit to use with my wolves. Added stuff to the base too. Sorry for the bad pic, but I had already undercoated it in black and that doesn't photograph that well... Anyways, a speeder for the woofs with very little effort!

Kneeling wolf is my new favorite of the pack so far.
Good progress being made with these guys.
I think some better lit photos could help folks get a better feel for where the project is going. Some light from the front as well as what you have here would work wonders.

Post by: Col Hammer
These are just quick photos I snap in the night after the modeling session with the ceiling lamp the only light source... When I get these suckers painted I'll try to take better lighted photos. Maybe I need to buy a new desk lamp or something to help with the light issues.

Post by: Xanthos
Beautiful work Hammer. Looking forward to seeing them painted.
One question though. What tools are you using when you do the beard details? I can´t seem to get hair looking right...
289
Post by: Col Hammer
I have about 8 different sculpting tools, of which I use 3 the most of the time. My main tool has always been the GW sculpting tool for some reason, but I happened to buy an "Army Painter" set of sculpting tools, where there were a great, sort of rounded spearhead shaped tool that seems to be made for this hair/fur work. The other end of that tool is a large flat blade that is perfect for smoothing large gs areas.
289
Post by: Col Hammer
Two more done, two left to do, then I'll slap some paint on 'em.
I tried to take this photo with ceiling lamp and desklap for more light. I guess the light comes too much from the left and leaves the right fig in shadow, but I think this improves the lightning conditions a bit neverthless.

This is not a scheme I've seen on the wolves before. I dig it. The poses are great though. That's something that I really need to get off my arse and do is posing. I'm in one of those, 'I really don't have a spare figure I can hack apart' modes, as $$ is tight, and can't really spare anything. But, this gives me ideas of how to pose them.
Great stuff, can't wait to see the rest of the packs.

wyomingfox wrote:What do you mean by "Biggerizing"? Does it have anything to do with extending the legs? Anyways, looks great!
Biggerized, or so-called "true scale" marines are meant to make the marines a little bigger than IG trooper. It is just ridiculous how IG guy is the same height or even taller than marine when in the fluff the marine towers over the normal human.
So I added a bit length to the waist, legs and neck socket and made the chest a bit broader. My biggerizing is a bit more subtle that what seems to be the norm among the "true scalers" as people seem to use terminator bits to make their marines bigger. But however you do it, it still looks better than the standard marines.

After a few months break from the wolves, I'm back.
I started working on various additions to my wolf force...
Wolf Lord in terminator armour. Will have lightning claws when finished. I just had to give him the standard "stand head taller than the rest of the guys, begging for lascannon shot" pose.
Wolf guard terminators, to accompany the Wolf Lord in battle. You'll propably notice the Forge World bodies. The FW stuff was just too good to pass. If you wonder the amount of green stuff, that just comes with the need to cover the biggerising scars.
You might remember my biggerised squad of ultramarines? I decided to turn them into Space Wolves to get another Grey Hunter Pack with as little work as possible. Here's a pair of ex-Ultramarines with wolf bits added, now needing a re-paint to wolfy colors.
Here's my Dognaught, still very WIP, but coming along. I saw the four legged dreadnought conversion somewhere (I think it was at Dakka) and liked it a lot. Now that I needed a striking Venerable Dreadnought for my Woofs, the memory of the conversion came back to me and I knew I just had to try it myself too. Thus the Dognought was born.
I'm building a Land Raider Crusader for my Wolf Lord to ride around, but I can't start building it until my ordered Forge World bits arrive. The only thing I could start working was the twin-linked assault cannon with added gunner. The piece is still WIP, but I like the idea of a real gunner shooting the weapon, while shouting around curses a sailor would blush at. "Oh, you want some of this too! You look like a dork in that outfit!" DAKKA, DAKKA!
And finally, the Prowler. Barely held together with blu- tac, but you get the idea... I had many rhino kits lying around and didn't feel like buying a Predator kit (with yet another rhino hull), so I decided to convert a Predator from one of the Rhinos. I figured the open hull wouldn't be considered as open-topped since the crew is wearing power armour (same as land speeder isn't considered open topped). Armed with autocannon and a pair of heavy bolters (one is still missing from the pic. I guess my great company had run out of Predators and the Iron Priests converted some of the rhinos into gun-carriers to fill the hole. I call this vehicle Prowler, but it fully reps a predator.

Sentinel - that's the parts I couldn't place...
I'm gonna have to do something similar to this... Would rather have a more robotic head though so gonna plunder my bits!
Thanks for info
289
Post by: Col Hammer
I used parts of various kits in the Dognought:
- Black Reach box dreadnought as body. Parts of another dreadnought (backpack, CC-arm mostly), but with careful converting you could do this without those extra dreads parts. I just happened to have them available...
- The back legs came from IG sentinel.
- Head came from juggernaut
- The lascannons came from SM devastator kit, but I might as well have used the dreadnoughts lascannons, so these are not neccessary (and anyway, you propably want to arm your dread with different armament. I could easily see the back holding an assault cannon or heavy plasma instead of the lascannons)
So, basically you can build this with one dreadnought kit and one sentinel kit and that jugger head with the help of your bits box for extra gubbins...

Your conversion work is really great. The re-posing and custom facial hair is going to make this army look wicked and unique. I'm not a fan of the wolf-dreadnought, mainly because it looks awkward ( IMO) on the 2 bases.

I actually cheat a bit here... I just put a blob of green stuff between the pieces of the cut chin and sort of eyeball it. So the thickness will wary a bit from mini to mini. Same with legs and torso - just a blob of greenstuff to extend the gap a bit. I used to use plasticard (my previous Ultramarines were made that way), but I got the lazybug and moved to greenstuff instead.

@Col Hammer: Awesome thanks! One other question, I need to look on the first and second page, but do you alter the abdomen section of the marine at all before or after you space out the chest pieces? If you do not, then how do you disguise the waist section? My assumption is by knives, pouches and grenades?
One last quick question, did you modify the Chaos Marauder heads at all in order to fit them on the bodies? They are really cool bare head options for Space Wolves!
This is inspiring me to start a wolf army, which was my first army back in second edition, that I never fully finished. Thank you for your hard work, truly inspiring, I cannot say it enough!
Thanks,
Chappy P!

Post by: Col Hammer
There will be quite big gap between the chest piece and legs that needs to be covered. You guessed it; pounches, ammo bags, purity seals, knives... anything you can find is useful in covering the gap. With wolves it's even easier! Bits of mangy, fleabitten fur that the wolves so love is excellent way of covering the gap.
I glued the marauder heads in place with the help of a bit of green stuff. Some of the heads have hair going the wrong way and that needs to be cut, but mostly they go in unmodified. I then add some hair and beard with green stuff to make them look even wilder.
Welcome to the pack. More wolves the merrier!

Not sure about having a corpse of something that the army uses for a symbol is the right message to convey...
Now a shredded Thousand Son or DA helmet/Corpse....that would be fine, and PETA couldn't say anything about it....unless you explain that said corpse was trying to hurt a poor innocent wolf, then you'd have backing!!!

Cool. You're going to have a lot of people drooling over your army at the tournament, make sure to bring an umbrella

They look even better IRL! Somehow the scale and sense of movement isn't portrayed in the images.
And I must say I underestimated the teeth of the list - and bad things happen in games when you do that. Next time, you'll stand no chance
Those two LRs just damn refused to die!!!

Man, I so wish I had a good reason to copy that Dognought conversion. It's just an incredible build. Totally cool.

Few WIP pics... a proof that I'm doing something.
Rifleman pattern dreadnought.
Predator Prowler.
Another angle.
Dreadnought drop pod. I left the insides empty and removed one of the support "wings". The big door still opens as 2 separate doors.
My rune priest.

Some kicker conversions Hammer. Love the improvised dread drop pod. That looks absolutely cool.
I love it. All of it. Gah, so much detail ...

Thank you for not continuing with Ultramarines. If you had made Ultramarines that looked this bad-ass, I would have had to sell mine and start over =)
Love the Wolf Dread. Seriously awesome conversion.

you really got the space-wolf look down, haven't you?
quick question: from what kit are the metal bitz on the runepriest?

The head and weapon are from a Hordes Circle of Orboros shaman figure. I don't remember his name right now.

Those are some good looking Space Wolves! Their style and mood is just perfect and I love the dynamism of their poses.
The Rifleman is sure a double serving of nostalgia...

Love the shaman conversion mate, very cool and again, fits perfectly with the barbaric look that you have nailed so well.
One question, whats the bar on the dreads exhausts for?
Cheers,

Why did you remove the side wing to the Drop Pod? Now the only way it'll land is on its' side.

The bar is on top of the body, not on the exhausts. It's an air radar. This dread is AAD-dread. I modeled it after a classic battletech mech (and before that, a macross robot?) called Rifleman. When I saw those twin linked autocannons, the Rifleman imaje instantly jumped to my mind, so I just had to do it.
The bad thing is, I ordered a wrong right arm autocannon from FW and now it doesn't match with the left arm... I'm still contemplating if I should order another arm or settle with the unmatching pair.

Nope. The dreadnought inside will lean on the opposite side doors when landing, thus keeping the pod balanced and upright.

Started work on 12 Blood Claws. I plan not to give any facial hair on them. They haven't earned their beards yet! It'll be slow work to biggerise 12 models, so these won't be ready is some weeks yet.
Also started to paint a Rhino. Since I have had so much trouble painting the infantry, I figured to break the painters block with a vehicle instead. I should be able to finish painting this way before I finish building the Blood Claws. I hope.
I also own now Thunderbolt fighter from Forge World. I plan to paint it in SW colours. The pilot is SW bondsman, not a space marine.
Started work on a Baneblade too. I will paint it also in SW colours and the crew are SW bondsmen. With so much unfinished stuff on my plate right now, this tank is a low priority and I will build it over a long time while focusing to finish something else.
Not much to report, but the work still continues.

Looking forward to painted stuff! Anything - just finish a single Grey Hunter or Termi - it'd be so awesome to finally see your "finished" vision for the army and then drool in anticipation of all the new stuff to come.

Like I said in the last post, I'm working on 12 Blood Claws. The basic biggerizing is boring work that takes long times and is not interesting subject for pics... When I get over the groundwork and start working on the poses and details, I'll take some pics.
I'm also painting a Rhino alongside the Claws. Still very PIP.
So nothing new to comment.

Long time, no see...
Well, summer is behind us and I guess it's time to get back to business... SW codex is only weeks away, so now I will return to the SW army. Or close to it anyway.
I bought the Space Hulk box and after seeing the great BA figures, I immediately decided to ruin them and turn them into Space Wolves instead! I figured this was a good practise to convert and paint these before the SW codex comes and I'll start working on my long neclected models again.
Here's pics of the small changes I made to the figures. Now I need to paint them.

I though about doing the same with my SHulk terminators, but as I'm already swamped with other projects I saw reason.
Nice to see that somebody else and especially someone talented took the task. Now get em painted!

I sure hope the new codex will allow you to field all your terminators!

Fantastic models, i want a few like that, or a lot like of that, or a whole army like that, which ever comes first.

The codex is very flexible. It allows me to field up to 30 Wolf guard (I think) and even more with Logan Grimnar in charge.
But these termies are meant just for Space Hulk. Unless I get to play in a big Apocalypso game, where I could use them alongside my wolf army!

I haven't actually painted (finished) a single wolf yet.
I'm currently painting the Space Hulk terminators as wolves, so I hope I have something finished to show soon.

Ok, I'm back.
I realise it has been along time since I posted here last time, but now I'm back to this project. I was away because of some real life stuff and also because of my Flames of War army got more love than the wolves. Now I'm gonna rectify that.
No pics yet as everything is the way I left them many months ago and there is no new stuff done yet.
On the painting table are my two Grey Hunter packs, Wolf Guard and the Wolfnaught. Lining up behind them are some Blood Claws, Fenrisian wolves, Rifleman pattern dread and pair of Land Raiders. On the planning/bits gathering stages are some Long Fangs and Thunderwolf riders.

Finally, some work in progress pics to show.
Long Fangs and Wolf scouts, going on strong, but still very much WIP. Need more wolfy fur and bling so that you can tell they are Space Wolves.
I gave the Long Fangs werewolf heads on the premise that the older the SW’s get, more feral and inhuman they will look in the end. The old ones do not lose their minds to blinding rage as the young pups that get the mark, but retain their minds because of the long lives and vast experiences they have gone through. Or something.
The Wolf scout has mark of the Wolfen and he has turned into feral werewolfish beast before he has had a time to learn how to tame the beast within…
The pair of scouts are still missing arms as I was unhappy with their poses and equipment and ripped off the old arms. Now I’ve given them better posed arms and equipment, but I’m still searching for the right bits to use as their missing arms. I plan to make that meltagun less shotgunny looking. It has an ammo clip already in place on the other side that you can’t see.
Anyway, without further ado, the pics…
