Gray's Daemons: Now in technicolor! @ 2008/10/13 19:12:35

Post by: graypaint

Daemons are on page 2 (and onward!)
I edited all the photos that were hosted on my old domain out of this thread, since I no longer own it and if you attempt to load content from there you will be spammed by password requests. I will try to shoot my Flesh Eaters again and get some of them here, but for now I am almost solely concentrated on my daemon army.

Old:
So I have over 2000 points of marines collected over the years. They are unpainted.
I decided about six months back, that come hell or high water, I was going to have a painted army. In the last 10 years I have not played a single game, but damnit I want to. And I want to have a painted army to do it with.

I knew it would be Flesh Eaters. I really liked how Chaplin Desmodus had portrayed them and wanted to keep going with those sort of ideas. I had painted up a FE librarian about four years back for a B&C competition, so I know how they will look (less blue).

I also started on an old rhino chassis I had lying around to test my vehicle scheme, since I know I want at least two razorbacks in the list and have a total of five rhino chasis to play with in any case.

So I started to inventory all my SM bits.

There are a lot of bodies; about 50 in that shot. I have 10 more tacticals to do as well.
Everything that isn't a BR marine will be an assault marine. That means I need more jump packs, about thirty more.

Anyway, the idea is that I will work on assembly and cleaning in stages. Last night I laid everything out, counted up how many arms/legs/heads/torsos I had and paired them up. All that took way too long, so my goal is to do about three marines from bare plastic (or stripped) to painted per week. It's a pretty light goal, but I want pretty clean paint jobs, and I also don't really like the standard poses for marines, so I have a lot of chopped up power armor that needs to be GSed back together.

Anyway, I really wanted to make this post to self motivate. I have been sort of painting SMs for nearly a decade and I still dont have an army to field, hopefully I can finish these guys out.

E:
Oh, I forgot about the second project I am working on.
I am trying to start a second (!!) army, Chaos Deamons. So far I have started to sculpt a Bloodthirster. I am going pretty slowly but before working on him I did some random raven headed figure, so that gave me some practice at working on small detailed sculpting.
I will snap some photos of both sculpts. I think I must have erased the pics I had.

Post by: graypaint

Here's the first "practice" sculpt. I am not using this for anything, he is too muscle bound to be a LoC; also his pose is static and pretty uninteresting :/

Here's the BT I am working on. I am not sure what to think yet, he needs a lot more work, the abdomen specifically. I want to get that too look convincingly exaggerated. On the other hand I might end up covering it with fur anyway, so it's hard to tell.

I sort of envision him as having some shoulder/arm plates, fur on his thighs and crotch and carrying two cleaver type weapons. I want the face to be like something out of Pan's Labyrinth.

Post by: graypaint

Did some GS on the marines. I decided I want to have jump pack straps on all the assault marines, even if I didn't have enough torsos with them, so I started on that.
Also began work on detailing stuff I trimmed off to de-Korneify the 'zerkers. Some base work too. There are 10 marines with pretty nice reposed assault legs, but I didn't bother to snap a pic of them. Also tested out a new primer, so that should be happening as soon as I get the GS and cleaning work done.

Here's five of the marines I work on today plus my sarge with powerfist which has been sitting around for quite a long time.

No work on the BT since last time.

I like the size of the force you've got going there. The first few modded marines look good as well.

Question- what color scheme are you going for? Any army list ideas rattling around yet either?

Looking forward to seeing more,

Blood

Yeah, I am going with the scheme Chap Des used on his. Take a look at www.flesheaters.net
The armor is pretty much all black with the greaves and weapon casings being deep red. Vet Sgts. get red helmets, chapter and company marking on the soulder pads. I am thinking about ordering decals from Griffin Games, but I am not sure about that yet.

Hey, so I totally slacked on updates. Here's how the Bloodthirster is going.
He needs to be smoothed out more and have his head finished off. The weapons sort of look like paddles now, but that will change...

Off to a great start. I'm curious what kind of putty/epoxy your using for that bloodthrister sculp, and also if you were building the body up slowly limb by limb or if you just did the whole guy at once?

Post by: graypaint

Thanks!

It's Sculpy III that I used to build up his bulk and some details. I am going over it with GS now, because it's easier to smooth and holds some details better. You can also let GS cure then mess with it. Sculpy needs to be baked, so that limits what I can do; it's also brittle.

I did his torso first, then worked up the arms and left the legs really undefined. I plan to sculpt the base and legs in one go, which is why his support leg is a thick stub looking thing.
His head is removable for painting and sculpting reasons, but I am giving him dreads for sure.

I should probably have thought about how he will get wings earlier, but I guess I botched that.

So far BT is looking good make sure you get the wings looking good. and add a skull belt to him.

Thanks for the comment.
I think i am going to do less subtle highlighting on the black, because it will probably look better in an army and it doesn't pop enough unless you are inspecting them.

Ahaha-Wow.

I want to go pick up some foundation paints and washes to clean up the black, which is sort of bugging me. Then I can rest easy and let em spread the dakka.

Ahaah-Yeah.
That does look like Frylock, I almost want to leave it like that. The fingers were done in a poor attempt at SE-NMM. I am going to change all of that back up to normal metalics since I decided to go that way for the rest of the army.

Pretty much. I might just clean the fist and go with a move vampire/ghoul face since Flesh Eaters are as close to full fledged vampires without having fallen to Chaos as you can get.

Not sure. I guess it could be a herald or just a normal plague bearer.
I need to do his thighs and work on the arms. He has a plagued looking halberd as well.

Yeah, I decided to finish up the Bloodthirster, I am just at a loss for how to get wings on him at this point.

I totally forgot that BTs have wings when I thought him up, so I more or less have no space for them. I am thinking he might end up with only one wing or I might just say he jumps really fething high.

Hah.

I need some advice.
Should I keep working on the wing as it is, or just buy some plastic ones? I still need to smooth it out a bit. It got wrinkled and I plan on just thickening it up over the wrinkles then detailing it with more rips and tears. The "arm" needs to be sculpted but I am way less worried about doing that than I am about the actual membrane. The "fingers" need work too, but again, I care more about the membrane.

The wings still need cleaning up and sculpting. Detailing. Yeah.

I think I will end up buying some resin wings from Ultraforge or something, I am not happy with these at all.

Here's my Plaguebearers in progress.
I am not sure what I can do for the weapons. I am going to work on the heads and bases next. I think the Demon army will get cobble stones/stairs for their bases.
Might also trim the quills off them.

E: and there is a big ole fether up in the top left corner there. I think he will get a slug body.

Gray's Daemons: Now in technicolor! @ 2009/02/28 03:35:34

Post by: graypaint

Here they are. I am pretty much done with everything but more facial detailing, horns, and finishing up their weapon arms.

I am happy I got them done in about three days of work. An entire unit might take me like...three weeks to convert normally.

sorry last photo is blurry.

Also I hate posting three times in a row with no comments.

The Thirster looks great. I especially like how you beat up the wings a bit. The Plaguebearers look like they have a good start, I am a big fan of the faces. Any Ideas for basing on those? To end my praise of your sculpting I'd like to bring that hooded BEASTY to attention. Very dark and mysterious and very awesome. That thin line of GS around the weapon is made of win. VERY COOL! KEEP GOING!

Hi

I like what you've done. The BT wings can work with a little more effort I think.

What are you constructing the PBs from? They work quite well...

Gray's Daemons: Now in technicolor! @ 2009/03/01 00:12:29

Post by: graypaint

Yes. I am a bit more happy with the wings, but I just wanted...bigger?

Basing: cobble stone for the troops, crazier stuff for the greater demons and heralds. I guess the "story" I'm trying to tell is that the troops are surging through a city while the commanders are standing on rocky bluffs around the city.

The PBs are Kroot.

And the hooded guy is some sort of Tzeench DP or GD...his staff is supposed to looks sort of like a dream catcher.

Thanks for all the comments!

Still working on these guys.
I'll take some better shots tomorrow in daylight. Here's two teasers:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I said I'd update, here's a whole bunch of stuff:

Here's a squad of plague bearers along with WIP Bloodletters, both on Microart studio bases:

My second Bloodthirster, along with his bigger brother. Both need wings, I think I might just grab the LotR Balrog wings for them.

WIP shots of the Bloodletters, I think they are pretty bland now so I am going to push the brown a bit further. They were painted using artists inks watered down with some FFW thrown in (that's why they appear glossy).

A Nurglish thing:

Another Nurglish thing:

Yet another Nurglish thing (who might hold an army standard):

Some Flamer test sculpts, I don't like them:

And finally, the crown jewel:

I got this guy with a bunch of other bitz I bought off someone. He got it from an awful ebay auction. Best chaos spawn ever..

Post by: graypaint

I am really enjoying the thirsters, I can't wait to paint them up. Even though they are so close from being where I would like my sculpting to be, I think I learned a lot and it's time to paint them both up.

That being said, I am going to be gone for the next six weeks, so this is the last photo update until I return, at which point I will hopefully finish up the plague bearers a second unit of blood letters, and the two thirtsters.

Still left for modeling are the soulgrinders. I have done a lot of concept sketches for them, so if I have access to a scanner I will try to get some concept work for them uploaded.

I also have two nurgle beasties that deserve some paint.

Here's some images as a parting gift:

This one came out a bit blurry.

The wings were done a bit differently for this BT, which was good and bad. First off, they are larger and more impressive as well as being more textured. That's nice. However, they are also heavy. That's not so nice. I am trying to come up with a better way to add some mass to the base, but it's not going to be a big deal really.

The basic process was pretty simple. I took some copper wire, bent the general shape from the "socket" to the end of the first "digit". Next I took a shorter piece of copper wire and used a bit of GS to hold it in place. To strengthern the joint and give the clay something to stick too, I wrapped thin electrical wire around the joint and copper wire. The same thing was done for the last digit. After the "skeleton" dried, I added some aluminum mesh to create the wing membrane, this was pretty simple and necessary since I wanted to work in sculpy and not GS, like the smaller wings. Next time I think I will stick to GS since it is lighter and has more plasticity. The only downside is that I can't carve GS and I can't use isopropyl alcohol to thin it out.

After getting sculpey on the basic frame, I baked it then attacked with my exacto knife and sculpting tool, carving some texture into the wing. I added GS in places where I wanted to do some finer stuff, or smooth out imperfections.
I still need to clean them up a bit, but I took away a lot from the second pair.

Here's this guy, who I think I showed before:

He will serve as a army banner bearer/ objective marker. I am pretty excited to see him finished up. The miniature has been sitting around in various states of completion for almost four years.

It's going to be hard not to steal ideas from tinfoil's excellent soulgrinders

Speaking of Soulgrinders:

These two guys just need a little clean up and gap filling on the defiler chassis, then they will get an undercoat!

I also dug up this dude; after three or more years in the bitzbox, I remembered I had some extra spawn arms. He is pretty much done aside from his sword, which needs to be detailed with some tormented souls. The GS work is mediocre, to be honest, but I just want him finished at this point.

Great looking stuff, gray. I particularly like:

-- The beaked daemon on soul grinder no. 1 -- a very characterful sculpt;

-- The harvester cannon conversion on grinder no. 2;

-- The idea of a little daemon crawling out of the neck of a larger torso on grinder no. 2.

Keep working on this, and keep posting. It's wonderful watching this army take shape.

I just finished the majority of the work on the plaguebearers, there needs to be some clean up work and I need to finish their weapons, right now they are totally clean. I will probably do some rusting effects then try some slimy looking poison.

Consider this a teaser until I get better individual photos.

Man, Dakka keeps eating my edits if I switch tabs. Ugh.

Anyway, I wrote up a plan of what is coming up next, but I don't know how interesting that would even have been. Needless to say, I have lots of ideas for new conversions. I have six bloodcrushers to finish up and then I am going to start on some new plaguebearers, taking my inspiration from the tagling "rotten paladins of nurgle". I am looking for a good stocky base for these new PB's and orcs come to mind, but I am not sure their heads will lend themselves to easy conversion like the kroot did. If anyone has suggestions feel free to post 'em!

After that I will cook up something for horrors and start on some daemonetts, who might end up being the stock models, since I do like them quite a bit.

(There is also a sketchbook page filled with ideas for a KoS, but I am sort of unhappy with how the Bloodthirster actually turned out after priming him, so I might not go through with it. Alternativley I might chop the BT off at the torso and resculpt his legs, which are, let's face it, very poorly executed; also his wings are begging for magnets but I didn't have the energy to sculpt any more and there was no real way to get magnets in there as it stands.)

More demon lovin' for you demon lovin' folk:

individual shots:

this is an experiment for their hell blades, I just did some yellow edge highlights. I think I like it?

I need to touch up the washes. This unit was largely an experiment in using citadel washes to do something fast. I wanted to mimic John Blanche's bloodletters, but it quickly became clear he did not use the citadel washes, but rather citadel (or artists) inks.
In any case, these guys took one afternoon to get this far and now all they need is some individual lovin. In some places I went overboard with the bronze so I need to cover it up.

All things considered, I really like how they came out. The first unit represents the "blood" and this one represents the "brass", very Khorny, if I do say so myself.

Nice plague herald/champion!
And I love the Grinder's staff. That's going to be a tricky paint scheme to pull off (the turquoise/lime thing). But if anyone can make it work, you can. Your painting tends to infuse the daemons with a glimmery kind of glow that I really like. Well done, gray.

Wow that's some high praise.

I did some neat stuff the camera didn't pick up, but it's not super fancy.

We'll see how they turn out though. Even I'm not sure if I like them yet.

Blech. My eyeballs hurt.

How appropriate.

These look really good, gray. As I've said before, I really like the bold palette of disease here -- the way you put such bright, vivid colors to such unearthly, daemonic purposes.

These look really good. Personally i have never been a fan of gloss varnish, but it seems appropriate for the slimy, nasty feel.

Gray's Daemons: Now in technicolor! @ 2009/11/25 05:36:43

Yeah-I need to figure out how to cut the glossyness without making the colors flatten out.

I know it looks bad, but here are some more finished (but glossy) heralds:

And here are how the horrors look now:

I need to clean up the blending, but I like them pretty simple as they are now.

Thanks for all the comments!

I've seen some of the brush based flat varnishes, those would probably work for the stuff you dont want to shine. I think its called gesso or something. It's on here somewhere.

@Graypaint: One easy way to do minor flattening without losing any of the vivid color, is to use an extra fine grit sand paper, jewelers sandpaper, and lightly brush the areas you want flattened with that. Just a thought...

I really like this army - the colours are vivid and complement each other well. The glossy-ness also doesn't retract from the gorey aspects. How did you achieve this?

Somnicide wrote:Hmmm. I want to reserve judgment until it is painted. I see a lot of things I like (the claw, the icon on the gutplate) but it feels a bit... lumbering?

Yeah-to be honest I don't like the thing as a whole because:
-it does not mesh well
-it has no appearence of speed

I think the idea is cool, and I like trying to connect it to the soulgrinder, but I can't really make this work that well. When I have more time I may rehaul his legs. I am not sure what do do for seekers/fiends. The models are pretty uninspiring for both and I really don't want to buy metal models that I don't like if I can avoid it.

Post by: Somnicide

Well, you see pretty good with green stuff so I will share my idea for seekers with you - I am cutting daemonettes at the torso and then using a bit of wire and green stuff turning them into naga like snakes on a cav base.

I don't have any pics yet but I have one test model down and it is okay.

Gray's Daemons: Now in technicolor! @ 2009/12/09 22:21:58

Post by: JD21290

If you need to make seekers then maybe some of the new ravenor parts may help?
The whole snake like body with a daemonette on it would work well, and shouldnt need much GS work.

Yeah, I can't wait to see them - still a bit of green stuff is much cheaper than 15 dollars per ;-) Why, that is almost a dollar a point!

Post by: graypaint

Well- despite some luckwarm replies to the snake/ogre/demonette, and my own apprehension, I went ahead and prepped five more of them. I think they will look pretty cool as a unit. And they fit the rest of this army rather nicely.

I also started (read: have been working on/off for a few weeks) on a Great Unclean One. I found an old metal monster I had (from VOR maybe?) and went to town.

That being said I think I have almost every unit I am interested in. I am going to bite the bullet and buy another ~40 bases from MAS for the demonette unit (6x2=12 strong, I would have liked them at 6x3=18 strong, but I used 6 for the seekers), 8 more bloodletters (armored ala Psychosis PPC), 14 more plaguebearers (these are left over kroot and bloodletters I have, I am not gonna waste them, but it'll be awhile before I get to converting another batch)

The only thing I MIGHT want at this point is another unit of horrors. I really want to finish what I still have before buying more though.

I should type out a full model list at some point. It's pretty ridiculous how fast I accumulated these dudes.

And of course, pictures will be forthcoming

Wow. I failed with the pictures.

Here's what I am working on most recently. I need a bit of feedback though.

Which leg/torso layout looks best?
1.

2.

or
3.

In 1&2 the legs are "upright" but the rotation of the torso varies. In version 3, the legs are backward bending. The torso also has one cannon arm built. I am not sure if I want the other arm to be a CC weapon or another big cannon.

Gray's Daemons: Now in technicolor! @ 2010/01/07 13:02:07

I like the backward-bent legs. They give the model more of a hovering, swaying, hunting feel, making it look more animal.

Glad you think so, that's what I ended up doing:

All magnetized. I just need to clean a few mold lines and do a bit of gap filling. I think a few areas need more cabling/chain to complement the rounded forms of the demon/robot head.

Here's the individual bits, with less blur

Whoa-been a long time.

I finished six seekers and thew together some demonettes. I just need to clean up the seekers a little here and there (mostly covering up the neck nub with some spikes or cables or whatever tech junk).

I also started (and mostly finished) a Slannesh DP. He is a really simple repose of a Confrontation model. I really like the look and didn't want to change it too much.

Next up is a unit of armored Bloodletters, eight strong of course (ala PsychosisPPC).

Sort of, they are not consistent in thickness, which is mildly troubling, but to be honest I really am proud of how the whole unit came together. They look pretty dynamic and sell the "rushing forward" thing pretty well. It makes up for their sort of lumbering bodies.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I am going to try to finish the armored blood letters pretty quickly. I am not sure I needed a third (!) unit, but they are fun. I would totally pay for an upgrade that let me armor them with a 4+ armor save, that'd be pretty sweet if broken. At least it will look cool and I can pretend they are higher up in the demon hierarchy.

Also the GUO is coming along slowly. I need to make him a big rusty sword or nasty flail.

Here's some 'crushers. The contrast looks really off. I am still working out the lightbox. Anyway-I think they are pretty much done. Still deciding if I want to do the trim in bronze or silver. I sort of like it red.

Quick (pictureless) update:
The Herald on Piranha is about 95% done. I did some really neat work using gauche; I am not sure my camera can do it justice, but we'll see.

I finished three bloodcrushers. I thnk I might go back and do some more of the trim in gold/brass, particularly the shoulders on the front legs.

I guess I haven't posted any progress shots, but I am just about finished with my demonette horde. The Seekers are still in progress. Similarly, I started on the KoS.

On the assembly/conversion table, the elite bloodletters are just flopping about. I got burned pretty badly by the ebay store I got the bits from and they haven't come in. I have been waiting for over a month; all bitching aside I guess I might as well just extend the Hellblades with some brass rod and call it a day. The GUO (which I think might have some progress shots in this thread) is coming along, I worked on the wireframe arm but still not much progress on his weapon. The Slannesh DP is done and ready for an undercoat. I still need to make a disc for my other Tz Herald. Still in the pipeline are more plague bearers. I think that covers everything I have purchased. I am pretty sure it also covers everything I plan to purchase for this army.

Which brings me to my next point: I am hopefully going to wrap this up over the summer and finish off my Flesh Eaters with the release of the new BA 'dex. I know I will be dropping at least 100$ on the new boxsets, because I am a blind idiot. I am going to try to unload some WHFB stuff, but I don't think I am going to manage to let go of my Lizardmen, which are legitimately the only army I ever finished and my first army.

Anyway, if you dudes have some comments on my painting, my conversions, or my planning, let me hear it!

edit: OH MAN! I forgot the Soulgrinders, one is finished (pictured above) one is primed and the last is still only assembled. I think I am going to plop all three on CD bases, mainly because the upright 'grinder is so top heavy and I want to have them consistently based.

I think I have a bit shy of 2000 points in that picture.

Still have a ton to finish.

My latest modeling project is the "armored bloodletters" which I am now thinking of using as "Paladins of Malal". Basically I want to have them stand in for any troops choice. On that note, I am also painting up a soulgrinder of malal. Black and white halved schemes own.

These may be the photos, but the metal on the grinder looks shiny-licous, maybe you should add some rusting or just a simple wash over it.

The photos are sort of off-I may have overdone it with the clamp lamp. I'll try to get some shots in natural light or without the light box. Like I said though-I still have to touch him up.

I've been busy assembling and priming my Flesh Eaters. I have ~50 assault marines put together and I need to magnetize the jump packs/backpacks. Also four Baal Preds, because, why the hell not.

I should start a new thread for them; maybe once I have some more painted up.
