Hiya
I'm 29 and live in Lewisham as well! I have one normal gaming partner who is 34 - both of us have been playing GW for over 15 years and are "normal"!
Definitely up for a game - PM sent to you guys.

I haven't seen them at a tournament for a bit, but the South London Warlords used to have a strong 40k contingent.
There is another South London club, but the name escapes me.

I've heard of warlords, i think they are based in dulwich and are a WHFB Games club.

I am in london most weeks at the moment flying back down to lincolnshire at the weekends, i may look into some of these clubs

I would say I am up for a few games with a young lad in Soho but it could be misinterpreted.

Hey Thunderchild I also live near Lewisham DLR - drop me a line on PM and we can get a game organised soon.
Looks like there are quite a few players in the Lewisham/NC area!

I am in Bow, East London, just 3 minutes walk from the DLR that gets me to Lewisham in 30 minutes or so. May be able to get some of my mates to play, but more likely need to find W40K players... I am a 30 year old, returning after 15 years away!!
No board at home, so need to find elsewhere to play.

Does the wargaming club out of the University of Westminster still run.
We used to meet up at The Plaza GW on Oxford street at 5pm on a Tuesday night, head down to the University on Regent Street and play in the hall/ballroom. All the table and terrain were in a locked room.
50 or so members at the time.
Then all the >18yos would head to a nearby pub basement, play pool and get drunk until midnight.
Happy days.
Of course I left in 2000.....

I'm sure if one of us got motivated enough we could find a place in lewisham to get a weekly/monthly games night rolling!?

We ought to keep this thread alive. I would be interested in a W40k night once a month, maybe twice a month.
5478
Post by: Panic
yeah,
I play 40K with a bunch of friends of mine... mostly at my house...
We also play Blood bowl with a few guys in Lewisham, we're talking of starting our next league soon Probabily in February, we need to set a day of the month and a venue... during the last season we played a few games at the fox and firkin, this worked out untill they dimmed the lights too much...
We are looking into possibily starting necromunda/=I=munda at some point in the future.
I'd be more than willing to meet you guys in a pub to discuss getting a game sometime.
The only real options for gaming with strangers that I know of are the charing cross gaming club (tuesday nights, £5 a game), or gamesworkshop bromley.
Or someones home.. which is a bit weird meeting online and bringing people to your home...

Definitely up for organising a meet up in a Lewisham pub (bring your own stab jacket though!) and we can see if a Necro / 40K / BB roster gets going.
Anyone want to set a date / time / place to get this going?
10667
Post by: Fifty
Yeah, I'd prefer meeting in a pub well in advance of going to someone's home to play. My flat in Bow is A) too small and B) shared, so not viable for playing W40K...
Shame there is no store in Lewisham. Seems a bit of a hub.
This coming week is bad for me, but how about one evening the week after somewhere?

Meeting in a pub sounds good, anyone know of any good pubs in lewisham? The ones I go to are in greenwich or blackheath. There's an awesome one in greenwich called 'the greenwich union' but it might be a bit of a mission for some to get to, as it's a walk from any stations and bus stops :/
If anyone has any preferences for pubs in the area suggest them!

How is Cutty Sark for people? Better or worse than Lewisham. If Lewisham is best for people it is easy for me, but I know no pubs there, whereas there are some decent ones by Cutty Sark.

Post by: ArbitorIan
There's a gaming club called the Cross Gaming Club just next to Charing Cross station...
www.crossgc.com
I'd be up for meeting in New Cross or Lewisham or Greenwich - that seems to be where most people are. Anywhere near a tube/DLR is best probably.
New Cross Gate - Hobgoblin
New Cross - Amersham Arms
Greenwich - Admiral Hardy (Cutty Sark DLR)
Greenwich - Coach & Horses (Cutty Sark DLR)
is there a pub near lewisham train station that isn't completely rubbish?
All of these are equally far away from me. Please, everyone state your preferences.
5478
Post by: Panic
yeah,
To meet up, any pub in the area is good for me.
I'll add my local 'the fox and firkin' to the list of options.
the reason the charing cross place works is because they have a basement where the gamers play away from the other drinkers.
If we are to start a gaming club in lewisham, we need to find a pub with a separate area to game in.
I think some pubs have meetings rooms.
or If anyone knows of a community centre type place.

Post by: jim30
There is a community centre / village hall place round the corner from my place which looks free - I wonder if we could rent that? I'll get some more details if you like?
How about we said either Amersham Arms or somewhere in Blackheath - the Railway Inn is good and right by the station?
9889
Post by: ThunderChild
Jim, if you could investigate the community centre that would be cool.
As far as pubs go, anything sounds fine, I walk past the Fox & Firkin on my way to work, but I think it may be a pain for people to get to via the DLR, and anywhere in blackheath should be excluded really, as it's a pain to get to for anyone using the DLR.
I would say anywhere near the cutty sark, that would seem like a good medium for everyone, and is relatively easy to get to.
When is everyone available?

I've taken a look, and attached is the link to a PDF showing all community centres / function rooms in the Lewisham area. My thoughts were for the Lochaber hall, but any others would do equally well.
http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/3E1CE56C-F410-4F4A-B10D-E2C0EEB7396C/0/Hallsbookletnew.pdf
In terms of dates / locations - lets say Tuesday 27 Jan (2 weeks tomorrow) at the Gypsy Moth pub in Greenwich (by Cutty Sark station) at 7.30pm. Can everyone make that event? We can meet up, have a chat and swap contact details, and then work out if there are enough of us to warrant booking a hall on a regular basis.

Sadly, the following day is the funeral of one of my pupils.
Although my head teacher is a heartless witch who has refused me permission to attend (I have already started looking for a new job), I will be helping the family get things set up the night before, so it is unlikely in the extreme I will be there.
Hopefully this will take place, as I would definitely like to find some people to game against and would be there if the circumstances were different.
5478
Post by: Panic
yeah,
Sorry to hear that fifty.
I'm available to attend. Who else is planning to come?
Or would people prefer to put this meeting back a bit.
Is there a agenda?
Do we plan to decide on the actions required to set up a club!
create a manifesto/club rules! how to accept new members/ age limits/ do new members have to have armies? etc..
Are we going to decide on a venue.. this will most likely have a cost per night! how much are we willing to pay?
I read the lewisham council list of venues but I've not enquired with any of them about prices?
we would need to decide how much money we are willing to sink into the initial creation.
Even a small club will need at least 4 tables populated with scenery, this will cost money and need storage. and decide on ownership!
I've noticed another church in lewiswham near ladywell swimming pool, it has a notice on it's door claiming the hall is for community hire.
I'll check that out!? today or tommorrow.
Anyways...
Ideas for Tuesdays meeting should be brought up here---Quickly...
Also if anyone wants to bring a small combat patrol 300pts/400pts/500pts.... dunno the appropiate size for random pub gaming.
I'll be willing to do so also. i'll bring some dice, trees and a hill or two! if we are lucky to find a quiet table and get a game.
---
or we could seek to join another club enmass?
The charing cross club plays on tuesdays.
http://www.crossgamingclub.com/
Membership for the year is £20, although you don't necessarily have to be a member to play. Games played cost £5 for guests or £3 for members.
They say this money money goes towards the club and new terrain.
on their website the claim to have bought a FW Phaeton Pattern Anphelion Base! Not sure about who actually owns the club or the club purchases...
I've found out about another club SouthEastLondonWarGames, that plays weekly on fridays ( and every third sunday ) in a catford church
http://www.selwg.org/
About SELWG
The club has been running for over 25 years. We meet every Friday and third Sundays. All periods are played, from Ancients to Ultra-Modern and Role Playing along with many boardgames and Trading Card Games.
They have a yearly membership fee of £30!
Plus £3 per visit to the club. I think this goes to the church, for hiring the hall.
looking at the website they don't play 40k, but they say they support all types of wargamming and TCGs have general terrain. So it could be a matter of joinning that club and starting our own 40k faction.

Hi guys,
I propose the following - lets meet up around 7.45pm in the Gypsy Moth pub (come out of DLR, turn left, and left again - its right in front of you as you leave the station.
I'll be down there and will be flicking through a copy of WD or a rule book as visual confirmation.
In terms of the agenda, I think we need to find out how many people we know who play locally, whether we want to establish a formal club, or if we just want an electronic 'mailing list' sent out weekly asking who is up for games, and then as numbers grow, see how we can evolve it. I think there is an element of trust here in the sense that people are inviting others to play with them - but my concern is that we don't have sufficient numbers to really justify hiring a club location at present.
Based on the responses here, I think we've got about 10 - 15 local gamers, and given the presence of SELWG and so on, there is unlikely to be a strong market for a 2nd formal club in the area. I think a more informal arrangement works best, and when numbers get too much we can look to rent somewhere?
I've heard mixed reveiws about SELWG - its very 'old school' and a lot of the gamers are apparently classic wargamers (fat, poor social skills, last had a bath 20 plus years ago, never spoken to a girl...). Personally its not for me.
I know Cross GC is good -but they have very limited space, so its apparently often hard to get a game in.

Post by: ThunderChild
Ok, lets meet on the 10th, although I think we'll have to assume that at on any given day there'll be a couple of people that can't make it. We can always let them know of any decisions we make.
As far as the agenda goes, I'm happy to just get some good contacts and get an idea as to where everyone lives etc. - keep it relatively informal for now. I feel that until we know exactly what kind of size meetups we'll be having, there's not much point in deciding anything regarding venues.
I think what would be best is if we all use this as an opportunity to make a note, mental or otherwise of who is around to have the odd game with now and then, and then if we want to arrange a large meet up, larger than say, 4 people, we can decide on an ad hoc basis when and where to meet, and maybe let people know on dakka at the same time to advertise it. I see a mix of formal and informal meet ups being the best thing for everyone to expect, as large groups would be great fun, and awesome for tournies etc, but completely impractical, and in danger of becoming taken for granted if they become regular - e.g. people will lose interest and commitment

Is this going to be a game night or a meet-up night accompanied by a small glass of dry sherry?
5478
Post by: Panic
yeah,
I think the plan is for a couple of chit chat nights (with what ever tipple takes your fancy) to sort out the details, prove peoples willingness to attend and try and build a regular games night.
on the 27th me and arbitorIan met up with a friend of mine JB.
I tired to convince Ian and JB to play LOTR, we flicked through the legions book and discussed the games strengths, saddly I didn't convice either to join... Ian says unless he can paint pink space hobbits he's not interested... We had a pint, when Ian left to go dancing or something in shorditch, JB and I played MTG for a couple of hours and met a random fella who plays magic in Lewisham...
Should it get going!? Things Id like to offer/discuss with the Meet/Group/Club:
40k pick up games and maybe a escalation league (these prove great motivators to get people painting)BloodBowl quick to get started in you only need 16models MAX.Necromunda/ maybe =][=muda also a easy game to buy into.LOTR the rules for this game seem awesome its like a 40k/BloodBowl cross over.
Alot of this can be thrashed out online, but meeting in person will establish who's actually interested in meeting up once a month!? or WhatEver....
My intention is to get playing more games!

Definitely up for getting a necro or ][=munda campaign going, got loads of scenery for it already, and me and some mates were doing a necro campaign as of about 2 months ago, so got all the minis/rulebook/pdfs etc already
Blood bowl would be good, got an Orc team I can dig up from the depths, as long as someone has the board etc.
LOTR really not very fussed about this, as it would require some monetary input, and some enthusiasm for the concept, which I am lacking in I'm afraid. I'm of the belief that GW need to support their specialist games, and drop LOTR for the dead weight it is, so I won't be in favour of LOTR I'm afraid.

We've got a small Necromunda group going now with 4 players. All gangs are newly rolled up, so its not too late to join in. If you'd like to play a spot of Necro, then PM me or post here and I'll send you the contact details. We tend to meet weekly at the moment.

Hello everyone!
I'm brand new to this forum, and just returning to Warhammer generally after a long time away. I'm looking for people to play against, in London, so naturally I found this thread! I don't know what came of it necessarily, but if you guys are meeting up semi-regularly then it would be nice to get involved. I've played Fantasy mostly in the past, but I'd be happy to try out other stuff too.
I live in central London, Camden Town in fact. I noticed a few people that posted on this thread before also live in Camden - which would obviously be great if they'd be happy to meet up sometime for a game and a beer? If not, I'm sure I could mission it out to Lewisham (aagh! zone 3!!) for a game every so often - being a student with plenty of time after all.
Anyways, it'd be good to hear from any of you if you are interested in a game. Thanks!

Not sure on opinions here, but think its worth looking into a hall hire?
I know a few places about london do it, and at most its usually around £150 per night.
Lets see how interest goes and it might be worth it.
also, ill need to make sure its a liscenced place so drinking will be allowed

This thread is very old. I suggest you start a new London thread.
(But yes, a few of us have met up a few times)

Hey guys, nice to see so many gamers in London.
I'm just outside, but it is only a 20min train ride to St. Pancras. I may have to check out a few of the gaming clubs that have been mentioned. I know one meets in Waltham Cross on monday nights?
Cheers,
John.

Does that put you somewhere like St. Albans Tehjonny? Two of my mates are Acton-based, and they're looking for games. Neither of them are on the forum, so I thought I'd look into it for them.

I would be up for a game of 40K in central London or Acton.
At the moment I only have a small Tyranid army but it is growing.

Yup St. Albans would be the place (or as I prefer to call it St. Dullbans). Yeah I'd be well up for a game acton ways, anywhere in London is pretty easy for me really. Have you guys had any success getting a group started generally? I know I'm a bit late into the precedings lol.

Well I'm actually based in Bedfordshire, I just guessed St Albans from getting the train down from Luton to Kings Cross There are no gamers anywhere near me :( AFAIK, those guys are on the precipice of quitting the hobby, based on the fact they're bored of playing one another. When I mentioned pub gaming, or at the very least mixing it up with some new faces they seemed pretty stoked. So what's the next step? Do I have to send a photo to you? Killkrazy, how many points you got?

Well I've got at table about the right size we can play on in St. Albans but it a bit taxing on the knees shall we say :p. No terrain to speak of myself. I'm not sure about the logistics of hiring a place out - but I'd love to get a local gaming night going, the scene seems a bit dead around here.

I have got 1,000 points painted, however it is all locked up in Big Yellow Storage for a couple of weeks.
I also have a bunch of nice terrain. Also locked up to hide it from the wife.

Well I'm based in Sussex so I guess I'm not far from London and I've been to quite a few of the London GW's.
