Hi all
I'm in the process of completing a 50,000 point Apocalypse Force based on Ultramarines
I have almost all the minis and vehicles, have spent a while working on formation and fluff, now getting into build mode
Building first... then painting.
The Force...
Half Veteran Company (1st... as Terminators, considering Veteran squads as well)
Full Battle Company (still deciding between 2nd and 5th... I've got Masters of the Chapter and the new Sicarius fig creates a thought to convert his character into Galenus)
Full reserve Tac Company (6th)
Partial reserve Tac Company (7th)
Still to get Scout element (10th)
12x Landspeeders (2x Typhoon, 2x Tempest, 8x new model)
10x Dreadnoughts
2x Line Breaker Sqns
2x Fire Supression Force
2x Armoured Spearheads (plus a couple of extra LR)
10x Predator (Destructor / Anhilator)
Marneus Calgar and Honour Guard
Masters of the Chapter
Tigurius and Cassius
Techmarines (x3) and Servitors
Still to get Drop Pods (x10)
Still to get bike force (x5-10)
Projects include converting Black Reach Terminators and Dreadnoughts using existing individual boxed set weapons; converting Sicarius from Masters of the Chapter into Galenus; creating additional Honour Guard for the Marneus Galgar HQ formation; and a Terminator command squad; to start with.

I had played marines a lot in Epic, with the advent of LOTS of tanks as special deals for Apocalypse I chose to have an IG (Cadian) army.
I pre ordered all the Apocalypse bits and pieces (rules, templates, dice, etc); an IG Company deal, 6x Baneblades, 2x Basilisk bateries, an Emperors Fist LR tank Coy, 3x LR Demolishers, 3x Hellhounds, IG Codex, and I was set. The stuff from GW were great deals saving heaps, the majority from my local independant stockist were 25% off - more savings.
When it all arrived, I got greedy and hooked deaply into a full IG battlegroup (4 - 5 tank coys, a battalion (4 coys) comprised of 2 infantry coys, Iron Fist coy, Stormtrooper coy (Cadian Kasrkin), and god am I waiting for a plastic Valkyrie (I want at least 12).
So the main answer is... Me and my IG force (also 50K)
I'm a solo player from wayback... however, when friends come over - they don't have to bring anything.
I've made a lot of headway in build mode... painting IS going to take forever!!!!

My only reservation is that being Ultramarines would be just too much blue to look at in one go. Black Templars or Dark Angels would be easier on the eye.

When it comes time to paint.. I reccomend the Army Painter blue primer spray.. it's the perfect ultramarine blue color and it will help you get it all done a lot quicker. Between that spray and a good wash with some of the army painter washes you should be able to save a lot of painting time.
Good luck

simply awe inspiring, I almost went insane having to do 30 tactical marines in a row - got me off space marines for a good few months, so yea . . . good luck
Wont take too long if you air brush em all ultramarines blue, then just gold n boltgun metal and if you can be bothered the eyes.
So 4 colours not including black each one will take only 4-5 minutes.
if you dont mind me asking, how much did that cost? $AUS

I kid you not - my local GW independant offered 25% off, plus Apocalypse specials, plus other specials - like buy 2 new Landspeeders and get one free (works out at 40% off)... I got 2x Tempest and 2x Typhoon FREE
Imperial Guard A$4000
Ultramarines A$3000
Still got about A$1000 to go yet
PLUS paint and green stuff!!!!
I got a good payout when our Company at work changed hands and my wife supports my bad habit... "so, if you want to" she says
The rest is HISTORY
When all is complete, I have a 12' x 6' game table (the pics show one third) I plan to line the Ultras against the Guard... sort of like the GW GD display "Battle for Macragge"... awesome

Don't you find it annoying that the AOBR guys are so hard to convert? Or are you happy that you can get so many delicious points so quickly (no slight intended)
9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
Yes, I do aggree
My first thought, before I got them, was to convert a few, however - of course, it's almost impossible.
Some can be given diff weapons - Plasmaguns and the like, instead of Flame, etc.
My changes, though, are to mix-n-match the AOBR marines with the other marines ( Luckily I have "other marines" to play with).
You know, put Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe at the front of the gang... so they can't see the bald and fat extras in the back row. lol
Same with the Termies and Dreds... I plan to get some GW bitz weapons as well as a couple of legit boxes of Termies and Dreds for their alt weapons (such as Assault Termies have both Lightning Claws and Thunder Hammer sets for all 5 guys).
Here's hopeing anyway

This means 8x Rhino, 1x razorback, 10x Predator, 6x Vindicator, and 5x Whirlwind... 30 in all (for this phase)
I'm working a production line building 5 at a time.
Sorry, same as with the LR, build now... paint later.

That's a nice amount of stuff. Our group is a bunch of crazed whackos, so we have similar sized armies. Friend of mine has 7 Companies of Marines, I've got 30K of Chaos and 30K of Guard (my 'smallest' full army is 8K of Necrons). Another friend has 30K of Eldar.

As I've said before... no kids at home, brilliant wife, a bit of money keeps popping up now and again... we don't smoke, infrequent social drinkers, don't do pubs and clubs... we do have a huge DVD collection though - that keeps us busy, when I'm not doing this of course.

Still to come 6x LR, 3x Hellhounds, 3x LR Demolishers, 15x Commissars, 17x Chimera, and 12x Plastic Valkyries. And one day - 3x Warhounds
And, yes... Thunderhawks too (when they are released in plastic)

Sorry I'm a bit out of the loop, but has the plastic Valkyrie been confirmed? If so, GW is coming with a very "crude" strategy of pushing for blatantly bigger battles so people are swept up in the propoganda and buy tons of minis.
But back OT, how "in depth" are you planning on painting these armies? I'd be amazed if you decide to go all out with highlights etc but I'd be disappointed if you went for a basic 4 colour no wash paint quality.
Can you also give us a more detailed run down on your pricing? How much did you get one of those Baneblades for? I can't quite make out the sticker in your pics.
And man, your FLGS must LOVE you!

And cheaper, and easier to build yeah, and can get more of them for the same money, and not as 'fragile' (ya know... good in a cabinet - cautious with constant manhandling) - from what I've read, and did I say cheaper?

Again, I've been really out of the hobby for a while (and too lazy to find out for myself), but how much are they normally? Was the discount consistent throughout all your purchases or was it only for a few?
And finally, what was the store like when you bought all this stuff! If it had been the one I used to go to, the manager there would've been poppin corks for sure!
9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
I shuffle and balance the costs and the frieght and the discounts from 4 different GW stores, 2 different States, 1 local stockist, and lately Scrapdragon mail order. I have had aconstant run of 20 - 25% discount on almost all of the purchases (except for GW direct sales only - but they were 40 - 50% mega bundle deals anyway) GW Baneblade is A$160
126
Post by: ChristmasKironor
I can understand why you'd buy from different sources, but why 4 different GW stores? It's unheard of for an individual GW store to have a "sale" or differently priced minis isn't it?
9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
GW Manager specials... In one store I ordered the Direct only IG Company - I got 3x 10% vouchers and about A$50 worth of glues and undercoat spray. In one store I bought the Marine Battle Company (RRP but a mega savings bundle non the less) and he sold me a Terminus LR for A$5. In another store I was offered 1 free old Landspeeder if I bought 2 new ones - so I bought 8 and got 2 Typhoons an 2 Tempests for FREE See... Look around and check for deals... its that easy

Wow...you...are....insane! (in a good way)
I purchase my GW products from my LGS at 30% off, and online at 30% off. (makes it a lot easier on me wallet.)
But I would never even dare to buy THIS much.. I would go insane filing the mold lines...then.."THE PAINTING!"
*play horror music* *rolls on the floor with plastic space marine bits stuck to my face*
I salute you for your efforts, sir.
Now.
1) Do you actually bother with cleaning the mold lines? (its rather important to me. For others it is not.)
Or do you prefer a robust paint job to draw away attention?
If I ever travel to Austrailia I'll try and play at as many GW's that I can in hopes that I'll find a store so full of tanks.. its standing room only!
2) After reading the blog, I assume you only game at your residents?
3) Do you have any tips for us "skirmish" level gamers on building/modelling?
Please try and answer as many questions as you like.
Thanks.

1) Every single @#%& one is removed (to the best of my ability) sometimes I have to stop far a few days so my cut fingers can heal some. I'm hoping for a GW new look in painting finish. 2) When I was playing Epic, we used my big rumpus room and my big table... it was the space that motivated us. For FOC 40K, I have played at home, at the club, at GW... but I'm not into GD, GT, Tournies, etc. Don't get me wrong, I love the work... too many restrictions for me. As for Apocalypse, the GW tables are really too small and there's always heaps of people trying to play as well (fielding their FOC 1500 point contribution). Hey, I'm not complaining, not every player is as nuts as me on a spend holiday, it's fun to watch, but painful to play in that scene. Also, I like to control the WHOLE army on the battle field - my tactics (work or not). So, we play at home a lot - huge room, huge table, AND they don't have to bring anything if they don't want to. 3) Building/modelling tips - yes, but that WIP will have to take it's turn. And to answer your final comment... 3 sailors are walking along Sydney Harbour Bridge after a nite on the town... and they need to urinate. So they are standing in the middle of the bridge, "hanging over the edge"... urinating. The Canadian says... "It's a big city, but back home they are bigger" The American says... "It's a big bridge, but back home they are bigger" And the Australian says... "Jeez fellas, the water is cold!" Don't you agree H.B.M.C.?

hey...
if and when you get around to painting...
you may have heard of it, but army painter products are pretty much made for projects like this...
(actually, probably projects a fraction of the size, but they still work...)
they have a spray paint base coat that when used with the dip the make, it makes perfect ultra marines armor color in the fraction of the time it normally takes...
you just spray with the blue primer, base color things like chest seals, guns, eyes, un-helmeted heads, etc...
then dip em

Update... I meant to explain what I meant by "Tank Factory" and "Rhino Factory" earlier. This is the Factory style of assembling multiple similar models at the same time 5 Whirlwinds ready to go Stage 1: Cut all required parts from sprue and layout on work space - place unused pieces in Bitz box Stage 2: Trim, then trial assemble, then glue the basic hull Stage 3: Trim, then trial assemble top plate (Do not glue yet) Stage 4: Trim, then trial assembly, then glue the hull sides This is a unique way to hold multiple kits in a gluing clamp (Work bench) Stage 5: Assemble top plate onto hull (Do not glue yet) 5 Whirlwinds done: 3x Vengeance Payload, 2x Castellan payload Stage 6: Assemble weapon system if applicable (Do not glue until painted) Completed Whirlwind - This piece is held together with bluetac The reason for not gluing just yet is so final detail painting can be done easily Next... 6x Vindicators (In 4 days time - back to work tomorrow) Thanx for the well wishes and motivation so far Mik

Wow. This is an amazing undertaking. I should do something similar. Wait. The girlfriend would be pissed if I spent that much time doing 40k stuff. He must not have a girlfriend. Poor . I was thinking of one hellova Armoured Spearhead...
8 Landraiders, 10 Pedators, 1 Razorback, 8 Rhinos... 20 Termies and a full Battle Company
Fire support from the Dreads, Whirlwinds and Vindicators...
And for the "soffen up"... 30 Termies teleport in
What do you think... overkill... or just KILL...
And then a full Battle Company lands by Drop Pod

You should definitely invest in a quality airbrush to base coat these if you haven't already. I wouldn't bother with the GW, get a quality brush and your own air compressor, by the end of the process you will have saved money by not buying $8 of AIR in a CAN.
9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
Need some advice guys...
I've been reading up about painting UM's and I've come across multiple versions all from GW sources
The base colour has been indicated as UM Blue OR Regal Blue OR (the new Foudation colour) Mordian Blue
WHICH is the Ultramarines colour
I know one answer is... whatever colour that YOU want to paint them
BUT... why are there differences... Comments please
Mik

BLUE

Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
From the options given...
Regal blue undercoat.
UM blue highlights.
9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
Thanks mate... I like the sound of that combination
Any clues as for the many different options offered by GW (other than a reason to sell new paint colours of course)
8074
Post by: Faux Pas
I'm sure that they found their previous paints faulty-example too thin or didnt coat in layers well-and just decided to mix differently with cheaper materials to make a quick buck. And by make a quick buck I mean do what's best for the customer, paint and whatnot.
9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
There's always more than one reason
5559
Post by: Ratbarf
I would think you would save money using the Mordian Blue but you would probably have do that then the Regal followed by Ultra that was already stated. (THe foundation paints go a longer way with the air brush because of their thickness they have to be watered down more with not much of a loss in colour.)

9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
Still waiting for the painting components to be delivered, however, the rare earth magnets have arrived
So while I'm waiting...
I was asked why I only had 1 Razorback (the answer being only one came with the Battle Company box), but it made me think...
I've got 30 Rhino variants and if I used RE magnets on side hatches (predator sponsons) and roof panels (predator and whirlwind turret mount panels) I could interchange them as required... with a few spare bitz, I can present 30 Rhino's or 5 Razorbacks at the pull of a magnet.
I believe that I have enough varieties of Predator (Annhilator/Destructor) and sponson fitouts (HB or Lascannon) to not worry about a need for swap over with RE mounts on these.
Question though, for you RE experienced lot... do you use plastic glue or super glue to affix them in place?
I will be starting right away and pix will follow as before.
Mik
9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
First RE magnet mock up is working very well... in fact I'm stunned how well
My plan is to convert a number of my Predators and Whirlwinds into Rhino's as required
I will magnetise the sponson panel to be interchanged with a magnetised Rhino side panel, and magnetise the roof access panel to interchange with a Rhino roof panel or a Razorback roof panel.
They will give me Rhino's and a Razorback to transport my second Battle Company, instead of Drop Pods, as required
Unfortunatelly, my camera is playing up with close up shots - too blured
Good pix to follow ASAP

Not really happy with pix though
For the side hatch, a hole was partially drilled (not all the way through) then the RE magnets x2 placed partly in holes (they stick up a bit)
For the sponson plate, a hole was drilled all the way through then the RE magnets x2 placed fully in holes flush on the inside rim (sticks out on the outside a bit) otherwise the panel would not fit in position
A hole was drilled all the way through through the side edge of the hatch frame then the RE magnets x2 placed fully in holes flush on the inside rim (sticks out on the outside a bit) otherwise the panel would not fit in position

Hi,
I just registered here on dakkadakka to reply to this thread. What an enormous project
I refuse to think you may not be able to do this. I have seen some people doing ver ygood quality in a good time.
You may know the warseer site.
There in the scifi logs forum a user named Bulldog UK does an army called Crimson Ultrawings. He has tons of stuff aswell, maybe not as much as you plan, but who does so anyway?
However, this guy uses a spraying technique. And then some highlighting. This stuff actually has top quality, though done very fast.
You should check it out. If you are interested, I provide the link, if that bloody site will ever let me in again
Cheers to you mate, and may your motivation never fail you!

My work usually takes ages.

Sorry guys... I am alive and the WIP is still rolling
I've had heaps of problems this last couple of weeks...
- Too much 'required' overtime at work
- Problems with my camera, it has issues with closeups
- My partner has been off work sick
- If you watch Australian news headlines, where I am has been under severe thunder storms for over three weeks now... we have flooded twice and all my stuff has been moved around... and my space has been occupied with wet stuff drying
So, sorry again for no update... but definately still on
A couple of good things though... I've got my paints and spray guns... and 2x Realm battleboards.
I'm also revamping my table... It got dammaged in the flooding... 4 inches of flowing river over the basement floor!!!
I WILL post as soon as I have anything ready
Thanks again guys

Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
Just a quick one...
The old table consisted of a beat up table tennis table with bat wing legs where you could fold half up for 'play back' games.
I got 3 off 8' x 4' half inch ply boards and cut them down to 6' x 4', then I edged them similar to the TT table.
The 2 end boards had edging along 3 sides and slid over the edge of the TT table, the middle board had edging along 2 sides and joined the 2 ends together as a 12' x 6' top board.
http://s370.photobucket.com/albums/oo141/Karsrkinmik/?action=view¤t=100_0446.jpg Check out ALL my WIP pics at Photobucket
The new table is the same size (12' x 6'), however, is alot stronger and more importantly... level
Mik
9667
Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
And more...
Using a number of 2' x 2' MDF tiles as the building base for CoD or other terrain...
And using two sets of Realm of Battle Gameboards
Arrangement 1: RoB down both sides - River / roadway / pipeline setup
Arrangement 2: Rob at one end - City / fortress
Arrangement 3: RoB encircling - Outpost / mission objective
And many more arrangements are possible - I have 12 tiles of RoB and 18 MDF tiles (at the moment).
Table wise... I have a design plan to add an edge around the table to create a lip that holds the tiles in place.

Question: Are you gonna get a Forge World Trench system to inlay into the terrain? Cause it would look sweet with those Trenches cut into one of the hills...

As it has been said by others... answers to my background have been given through out the thread and I will only add to this if new stuff comes to light, no need to keep repeating old posts... it bores the young and scares the old. That said... I thank you for any interest in my life and madness affliction. Trenches on RoB... I'ts funny you bring that up... I have a plan for a trench system that utilises the height of RoB hills (about 2") and 2" thick blue foam sheets. If you can imagine (coz I haven't done it yet) the foam tiles continue the same height and contours as the Rob tile... and has a trench system cut into IT. I also plan to do similar with urban / city themed tiles That is until they bring out new RoB tiles... I believe that additional city and trench tiles will follow, as well as road and river tiles... ONE DAY. But until then... I (like many others) will make my own. Mik

I must apologise to you all... I have repeatedly not answered “My Life” questions and stated that it’s already in the thread… No it’s not… I just read through my entire thread, and it’s not answered your questions… I have confused myself, I am on a few different sites and I thought I had answered these questions on this site…. I’ve decided to break up my story into a few posts… one reason is to avoid a large chunk of reading (I’ve seen some examples on other threads and it seems to make the read disjointed and requires a lot of attention to stay focused.) Another reason is for paragraph breaks… each post is a paragraph and a different part of the story (more or less), again done for an easier read. It is not done to build up my posts or pages coz I’m sooo close to ‘X’ amount… nor is it done to keep my thread at the top for a while longer (I’ve actually written the posts elsewhere and I am just copy / pasting quick as I can), so in effect it is the equivalent of just 1 or 2 normal posts. So, unless you have seen me on these other sites, then here is some background info… Mik

My Past (part 1)
I was in the Armoured Corps (Army Reserve) as a M113 APC crewman. When I became a crew commander, tactics were often worked out using a scale model table. 300th scale micro armour vehicles were used and the table was created to match a local training area. The setup was two 20' x 8' tables, which represented about 25 km of map terrain. I got hooked and bought my own micro armour force both modern and WWII.
I now wanted some infantry to go with my APCs. The available stuff at the time was a wisp of metal on a stick and useless to me. That is until I found a box of Epic Eldar infantry. I now had my infantry after a bit of converting. There was a booklet in the box advertising the Warhammer 40K world and within a year I had packed away my micro armour and converted fully to Epic.
In those days of Epic (Space Marine 2nd ed), I had over 15 Companies of Ultramarines and Space Wolves plus Titans (3 Imperator, 12 Warlord, 8 Warhound, 18 Knights), lots of armour (over 50 vehicles including Baneblades) plus medium forces of Orcs, Eldar, Squats, Chaos and IG. I used to play on an old table tennis table (9' x 5'). I still have every piece.
I started with one Epic Space Marine 2nd ed, then I got Titanicus, then 3x Titan Legions, then I acquired another Space Marine 2nd ed.
I have 3 boys and they wanted to get into 40K, so I decided that Epic was a little difficult for all of them (ages 6 - 10 at the time) so I got 2x Space Crusade to introduce them to the world of 40K.
They loved it, so within a year I got one 40K 2nd ed for them and one for me. They lived interstate with their mother... So we all played when I had access. Since then, all 3 have been playing and have their own armies, and all are very heavily into networked DOW.
I've still got the original sets at my place... I don't throw anything out. Except ex wives... some know what I mean.

My Past (part 2)
I dabbled in 40K in the 2nd ed era as well as Space Crusade and Space Hulk. But I loved the Company and Battle group formations and lots of armour in Epic.
I eventually got into 40K 4th ed and at the same time read about Apocalypse - coming soon... Damn, I had some spare money and my mind went ballistic. Lucky for me I have an understanding wife, a big house, and the kids have all left home. A plan for possible divorce and bankruptcy was hatched
I was born in the UK... To be precise, Oldham, part of Greater Manchester, however, I call Australia home… Sounds like a couple of song titles
And I'm NOT insane... I'm GREEDY, I'm greedy and hungry for power... to rule the world, the universe... the entire 40K world… Sorry... no, I just love collecting

The Plan (part 1)
I had played marines a lot in Epic, with the advent of LOTS of tanks as special deals for Apocalypse I chose to have an IG (Cadian) army.
I pre ordered all the Apocalypse bits and pieces (rules, templates, dice, etc); an IG Company deal, 6x Baneblades, 2x Basilisk batteries, an Emperors Fist LR tank Coy, 3x LR Demolishers, 3x Hellhounds, IG Codex, and I was set. The stuff from GW was great deals saving heaps, the majority from my local independent stockist were 25% off - more savings.
When it all arrived, I got greedy and hooked deeply into a full IG Battle group (4 - 5 tank Coys, an Infantry Battalion (4 Coys) comprised of 2 basic infantry Coys, Mechanised (Iron Fist) coy, Stormtrooper coy (Cadian Kasrkin), and god am I waiting for a plastic Valkyrie (I want at least 12).
So I started cleaning, clipping sorting, storing, and eventually building my IG army. Then, my job changed hands, we all stayed working for the new company, then we got a hell of a termination payout. My wallet was armed and of to GW... for a look at IG extras... I went.
The Space Marine Battle Company box was a direct sales only item, so they couldn't tempt me, and I was happy with my IG army. Then I turned around and there was a Battle Coy box sitting on the floor.
Begging me to buy it.

The plan (part 2)
The IG army was easy planning - lots of stuff, 2 Companies of this, 3 Companies of that, multiples of everything.
But marines are different... as you all know so well. I chose Ultramarines, because I like codex chapters, I love the Roman and Greek influences, I find the restrictive confines a blessing - coz you are dealing with a gigantic admin system which confers a realistic military approach - you can not just do what you want.
Of course GW built in that option if you want to take that path... however I choose not to - I feel that you have to use strategy and tactics instead of point stacking. But as I've said before that's my choice - it's my game.
This is another reason for my madness... I have enough room, more or less enough spare cash, and enough figs to form TWO Apocalypse size forces - I'm also an experienced solo player - I can play two different tactical forces, and have for years.
My old table tennis table was a bit small for Apocalypse, so I got 3 ply boards 6' x 4' and placed them on top which now gives me a new 12' x 6' table. The room is a rumpus room about 20' square... TONS of room.
Then Assault for Black Reach was advertised. <DELETED BY THE INQUISITION>... I needed some Terminators and Dreadnoughts, so I worked out the math, organised my formations, checked out the savings - 25% off an already unbelievable deal. So I bought 10 boxes.
Next on my list is some Terminator and Dreadnought weapon bits from GW and I can convert some distinction into my new 100 Tactical Marines and 50 Terminators as well as close to 100 other marines from the past incarnations.
Next problem: now I have an Ork army - 50 Nob, 200 Boyz, 30 Defcopters. Now I need some Ork bits and pieces for my third Apocalypse force.

Post by: Lord Castellan Mik
The plan (part 3)
This is a breakdown of what Ultramarines I've got, not yet got, and need to convert / create…
Chapter Master Marneus Calgar and his Honor Guard... I like the new command formation and will be adding more Honor Guard
Masters of the Chapter... As I said earlier; the new Sicarius fig creates a thought to convert his character into Galenus for the 5th Battle Company - 2nd and 4th have great fluff but I want something I can create as well
Tigurius and Cassius... I want to give them both Command squads as they will be Chapter specific IC groups
Techmarines... I have the full harness direct sales fig and the boxed set; I want a few (5-10) single servo TM (to go with the 1 I have); I have a thought to create a Tech Cult component - Skitari, Magos, converted vehicles, etc
5th Coy: full strength Battle Company
I've got over 150 more Tactical Marines (Black Reach and older incarnations)... I am considering adding a few Assault and Dev squads to create 2 more Battle Coy (under strength) - 1 being a drop pod formation, the other in home world / off world bastion defence mode (my IG force would be PD) along with Chapter Armoury vehicles
I've still to get a Scout force... Sgt Telion with about 30-50 scouts (sniper, bike, speeder configurations)
1st Company... Terminators - I have 50 from Black Reach, if I get heavy weapon and CC bits from GW then I can convert some differences into the squads.
Dreadnoughts... Same as above, I have 10 all the same. If I get another couple I could se the multiple weapon options to change a few. Also, I know that the consensus is 3 or 4 per Company; however, I have provided options for multiple Coy and the use of the Chapter Armoury.
Vehicles... With the addition of Sgt Chronos, most of the formations will be attached to Coys and Chapter Armoury defence.
Now I have to convert a few coz they look all the same... diff weapon here, diff accessories there, and so on.
The rest of my Ultras are going to be stock standard - very large quantity of reasonable figs is Apocalypse - FOC and tourney figs are few and excellent quality on the other hand. I'm still working out the org and formations that I want to include.

The Plan (Part 4)
And my Imperial Guard…
I went with Cadians coz I like Creed and the “Starship Troopers” look alike army. They are also the closest to real life military, which I also love.
Armour: At this point... 6x Baneblades, 6x Basilisk, 14x LR, 3x LR Demolishers, 3x Hellhounds, 10x Sentinels: Still to come 6x LR, 3x Hellhounds, 3x LR Demolishers, and 17x Chimera.
I also want to make a Super Heavy Regiment… at least 4 Companies, so, around 6x Shadowswords are on the list
Troops: 100x Kasrkin, almost 500x Cadians, over 90x heavy weapon teams, 12x command squads, 4x Company command squads, 5x Commissars; Still to come 15x Commissars.
I liked the idea of a modern Battle group, which has elements of Infantry, Armour, Artillery, and so on, to be able to respond to any situation and still be under one command. It is also something like a US Marines structure.
As a bonus…12x Plastic Valkyries soon… And one day - 3x Warhounds

Rational and Justification
I like the idea of Campaigns, you know: WYSIWYG; from planet fall to win; so, all the forces would be in a few continuous games - or one game with a lot of turns. I already have an equal size opponent – ME.
Fluff and research I'm brilliant at, building I'm very good at, converting I'm good at, and painting this size (I'm used to Epic remember)…well, I've got to learn - and stop start per squad is not a learning curve for me. I have not been known for painting of any standard before, so I'm going to try at first... I have a couple of local club friends who are willing to step in (for a modest fee of course) if I fail the grade... after all, I still want them to look good.
MY prior painting skills are virtually non existent... I played Epic, mostly unpainted, for years, and back then (2ed) all the weapons were red and the paint was so thickly applied... I just didn't like the look - so I didn't bother. However, the paint jobs now are truly incredible and I think I might have a chance to emulate at least a decent standard. (I would be very happy with "not bad"). The painting side is actually scarier for me than the money or the building.
So, where do I store everything… When I started collecting DVDs, I went with the ‘pop out’ rack system... but, and I know this will surprise you, I went overboard and the collection got huge - HUGE, and I changed over to a drawer system (more DVDs, less space).
I thought of my minis almost right away and did a quick test - yes, 3 high is perfect (except for big flags and banners) and you can stand them on a shelf or table or wall mount them and hold minis or vehicles... pretty much perfect.
And before anyone asks... HUGE means 1000 movies and a lot of TV seasons - all up 5000+ discs (all bought - no burns)
I think I may have a problem when it comes to collecting things... OH NO... I'm a Collection Addict!!!

The Cost
I always add up the dollars - before I spend more, I need to work out the savings, etc. Knowing the actual cost, the RRP, the savings, other prices (on eBay, etc), all add to the enjoyment... Sooooo much stuff for sooooo little $$$
Spending so far: Imperial Guard A$4000, Ultramarines A$3000, and I’ve still got about A$1000 for each to go yet, PLUS paint and green stuff!!!! This doesn’t include my new games table or two Realm of Battle sets, nor plans to enlarge my Ork force.
I shuffle and balance the costs and the freight and the discounts from 4 different GW stores, 2 different States, 1 local stockist, and lately Scrapdragon mail order.
My local GW independent offered 25% off, plus Apocalypse specials, plus other specials...I also use Scrapdragon (an internet store, which also is 25% off), and I'm also on the lookout for GW Manager specials...
In one store I ordered the Direct only IG Company - I got 3x 10% vouchers and about A$50 worth of glues and undercoat spray.
In one store I bought the Marine Battle Company (RRP but a mega savings bundle none the less) and then he sold me a Terminus LR for A$5.
In another store I was offered 1 free old Landspeeder if I bought 2 new ones - so I bought 8 and got 2 Typhoons an 2 Tempests for FREE
Actually, one of my best overall savings was AOBR, where I needed Termies and Dreds... so I bought 10x boxes of em. (at A$75 each)… This gave me 50 Termies, 10 Dreds plus a full Tac Company... AND a third army... ORKS: 50 Nobs, 200 Boyz, and 30 Def Copters
I got a good payout when our Company at work changed hands, and my wife supports my bad habit... "so, if you want to" she says… The rest is HISTORY

The Scale of Task
I don’t think that this WIP is too much work or distracting to my lifestyle, as you see from the LR factory, I love production line... I wholeheartedly agree that it is a daunting task, and a challenge. I have invited you all into my dream... I could have kept it to myself, but I thought that if I am awestruck by the sheer magnitude, then how would others feel.
I have the minis now and I'm not giving them back, nor am I leaving them to the many followers who want me to adopt them... however, I'm also not stupid (insane yes), nor do I intend to waste any money by not following through with this project. Truly, only time will tell... either way, I very glad that I undertook this WIP and many well wishers agree.
I know that by doing it my way, you guys only get to see half finished stuff for a while... but the end will come to those who wait.
I thank you all for your support, observations and comments, it all keeps me honest and determined to produce a finished product that not only will I be proud, but I hope that all of you out there are too.

I missed a bit
I’m a Security Officer in a full time perm site, however, I've recently earned a BA degree in Criminology and I am starting up a Security/Risk management Consulting firm - maybe another year or two away before fully operational.
As I've said before... no kids at home, brilliant wife, a bit of money keeps popping up now and again... we don't smoke, infrequent social drinkers, don't do pubs and clubs... we do have a huge DVD collection though - that keeps us busy, when I'm not doing this of course.
To answer the next question... I find the time coz I'm on a 4 days on, 4 days off roster - and my wife works 5/6 days a week.
My wife truly IS awesome, in that she understands my affliction, pampers my insanity, and really really understands my addiction and compulsion to continue and expand this project...
She also encourages me to utilise extra space in the house... My stuff is set up in the basement and she suggested that I set up my "Factory" in the lounge room...
On top of ALL that... she is a FANTASTIC cook and awesome provider... she is always topping up my drinks and bringing me snacks... and wait... there IS more...
She also does fantastic things to me that little plastic soldiers can't... What an amazing life!
In all honesty, I only have to convince myself and my wife that what I am undertaking is fun.
Please believe me when I tell you all... critics, cynics, jealous, and others... I am having the time of my life AND my wife supports me totally, I suppose that means that we are both mad... but loving it.

Get lots and lots and lots of ultra blue paint poor it into a big mixing container before you paint then mix it together.
I may have 4 companies of marines but they are from different chapters so not the same colors.
Army painter might help a lot with the initial base paint.
Good luck.

You have the potential to be the most awesome person on this site with one thing to think about.
A 100k Ork force to pit against both the combined might of the Guard and the Ultramarines.
And invest in a really, really good airbrush. You won't regret it with this kind of task Especially if you get one that can be used for batch shading and weathering for tanks.

As if the 50k of everything wasn't enough. Just found this thread today and I can't wait to see all of this come together.
Regarding the painting, forget the GW paintgun and get a solid airbrush kit, such as an Iwata dual-action hooked up to a Studio compressor. Yes it costs about 500$ without any discounts (which knowing you I'm sure you'll find a deal for anyways) but it'll save you so much time painting it's rediculous.
I can already picture you setting up a clothesline in the back shed so you can hang and paint 10 vehicles at a time

You're still the Apoc-Daddy!

Ya know that a lot more is on the way
I like the idea of a super heavy tank battalion as well as you do... I just don't like the Macharius style like you do
I also love Valkaries, Vendetta, Vultures as well... they will eventuate one day as well
One thing is certain... all will come to those that wait patiently
more to come, mate... Hows the weather in Sydney, it's crazy in Brisbane, all over the place

Raining, but warm at night... it's odd.
The good news is I'll finally be building my Valks in a couple of weeks. Even got some Vendetta conversion kits. Had I any money, I'd've got a quartet of Vultures to go with 'em, but that'll have to wait.

Great stuff, I love the idea, the scale and the courage to do something that big - keep up the work.
I'll be following this from a safe distance - lest I can't resist the urge to join in

I did mine in the same way as a Leman Russ Company is 3 squadrons of 3, plus a Command vehicle, except in this case a Squadron of 3 Super-Heavies counts as a whole Company, therefore 3 Companies + 1 Command Superheavy = 1 Battalion:
Battalion Command - Baneblade
1st Company Command - Hellhammer
1st Company Tank A - Baneblade
1st Company Tank B - Baneblade
2nd Company Command - Stormblade
2nd Company Tank A - Shadow Sword
2nd Company Tank B - Shadow Sword
3rd Company Command - Macharius (Vanquisher)
3rd Company Tank A - Macharius (Vulcan)
3rd Company Tank B - Macharius (Vanilla)

Update 2011…
The bad part…
My father finally passed away after being eaten alive over the last 12 months by multiple types of cancers. He went from 100kg to 45kg before our eyes and suffered indignity after indignity… even your worst enemy doesn’t deserve Cancer.
If you are able, please donate to your local Cancer Fund and help find cures soon… it is an insidious disease, which attacks all ages and doesn’t care how much money you have.
The good part…
I now have two more grandchildren, number 6 and 7… and number 8 is due in Nov. Unfortunately only 4 are in Brisbane, the rest are in South Australia (over 2000km away).
The best part…
My youngest son, Troy, recently came to visit for a couple of weeks and he is an avid 40K player… IG, Tyranids, Grey Knights, to name a few… and he assembled and painted some of my metal Ultramarine characters for me.
I have collected the following characters… and their status:
Calgar… painted
Honour Guard… painted
Tigurius… painted
Cassius… painted
Master of the Forge – Collectors Techmarine… undercoated
Chronos (standing)… painted
Chronos (in cupola)… not started yet
1st Company Commander – Terminator Captain… not started yet
Terminator Chaplain – as 1st Company… not started yet
Terminator Librarian – as 1st Company… not started yet
2nd Company Commander – Capt Sicarius… painted
Generic Chaplain – as 2nd Company… painted
3rd Company Commander – Master of the Arsenal… painted
4th Company Commander – Master of the Fleet… painted
5th Company Commander – using Master of the Watch… painted (transferred from MOTC 2nd Company because I have the actual Sicarius mini) Now Master of the Marches
10th Company Commander – Master of the Recruits… painted
Telion… painted
I can’t take all the credit for painting… in fact I can’t take any credit at all… I just bought the minis; Troy did all the work. And as such, I do not ask for any critical comments since the painter is back in Adelaide – however, I will listen to suggestions for future pieces and will pass on all your comments to Troy.
We both know that there are a few missing things… gun barrels not drilled, the Chapter Banner not finished (no Tyranid at his feet, no details in the fringes), bases not finished… and a few more.
Also… he hasn’t given me a detailed method of his painting scheme… but this will follow soon.
For the patient members… paint has arrived to this thread – but don’t expect too much more soon, but it will come… so enjoy
Mik

Just read through all ten pages of this stuff and it's pretty amazing, almost like a massive April fools but not; I take my hat of to you sir (and your wife) troy is a good painter (how old is he) and I wish him the best of luck with his 40k. I also wish you luck with completing the project, can we see a group shot of everything (painted and unpainted?)

Hey Mik. So sorry to hear about your father. That's really awful and my thoughts go out to you.
With regards to the thread, it's great to see you progressing with this. How far along the project would you estimate you are now? Obviously I don't mean including painting, but the construction phase.
Also, great to see some paint included!

Troy is 26
Ultramarines are about 90% bought and 60% made
Cadians are 80% bought and 40% made
Overall... about half way for everything

Well, congratulations on making the half way point! You know that means that you need to take a photo for us.... Not a photo of everything lined out in battle (I'm guessing that would take too long), but everything as you are storing it so that we can at least get an idea of the scale of this as it stands!
If it's not too much trouble sir....
Looking forward to the next updates.

That's superb Mik. Really impressive to see where you've got to. Thanks for taking those pictures for us. Do you have any estimations on when it will be finished? Also, do you (realistically) think you'll ever get it all painted? Have you thought of using 'Army Painter' or any of those other dipping methods for doing large quantities at the same time? It might be worth thinking about for the troops and then paint the characters individually... Just a thought.
