Post by: Mephistoles1

I decided to go forward with my tzeench army using the new marine codex. For this army I am using painting methods that I have used rarely and or not at all in my past armies. My usual method of painting is base coat, inkwash, drybrush. In the past this has given me pretty good results for good looking tabletop quality armies. For this new project i am using edging, painted highlights, and if I can find the patience blending. So far my attempts at blending and layering have not met with very much success(mostly a patience thing if I am honest).

Fluffwise this is a marine chapter that has been subverted by tzeench in some master plan. It is far enough along the descent into chaos that the marines are using magic as the old pre heresy thousand sons did, and there are even thousand sons-ish marines among them(Sternguard). Most o the units will also functi9on in a Tzeench themed chaos army. The only units that won't cross over are attack bikes, drop pods, and some weapon options. Everything is magnetized though, so switching weapon arms and vehicle weapons is a sinch. For instance I already have the Land raider weapons magnetized to switch between a regular raider and a crusader, and I'm working on the bits to make it a redeemer as well.

To start (and honestly one of the most fun parts so far) I began converting the special characters with a chaotic slant. I have most of them done already as the pics will demonstrate. I have already converted Shirke, Scarious, Pedro, Tigurius, Vulkan, Lysander, Khan(still in progress). I also have made my own sorcerers from dark angel vets, and chopped up and added some bits to some black reach terms. As with the Tenticle Tide(My Slaanesh army) Sisters of battle will be regualr tac marines while chaos marines will be stern guard and other special units. Anyway, feel free to comment on, criticize, and generally make fun of anything you like(or don't).

Assuming that voting had the same Deadline as entry midnight cental, the voting should be finished. I will remove it just in case though. Thanks for pointing that out. That was the main reason I did not start this thread until after the 4 days of voting.

Thanks for the comments!

captain.gordino: It's a trick I saw in a Greenstuff tutorial somewhere. Roll on a thin covering of gs, then roll the textured sufrace of an exacto grip(the matal part) or in my case my pin vise drills grip. It textures the surface quite nicely.

Panzersmurf: The terms lok ok from most angles. I just can't stand the static pose of " I walk at you. I went to Michael Meyers walking classes. Se me walk." Besides, when they are the biggest guys in the army, who's to stop them from taking an extra share of Tzeentchs special brew?

I have a few more pics to post up in the next day or so. I just need to finish Khan, and I have some bike conversions as well. Oh and I may have a finished tac squad in the net few days.

i think it would help that some of your terminators had their feet flat on the ground and head up straight. great idea overall tho. inspire make my chaos a play as the marine dex as well.

great ideas, but you need to spend a bit more time on the gs joints as they look too big. but the gs on the staffs is awesome!

its part of my marines fluff, but i use mostly chaos minis anyways. they look cooler and imo have way more conversion possibilities with just the box sets then regular marines.

Lanman: The broadway disco production company is proud to present .. The fall of mankind! Huzzah! Buy tickets at your nearest ticket scribe today!

ALIi B: Do you mean the sorcerers gs joints or the termies(or both)? The sorcerers were just leftover greenstuff from the stave's that I pushed into the joint as filler. They will get a cabled or textured thin overlay before they are done. The termies joints do't look that bad in person, and half of the arms don't have shoulder pads yet. That helps hide some of it and minimize its exposure. I will probably do a little detail on them as well, depending on how they look once I finish the rest of the GS work on the terms.

Keep any comments coming, espescially about anything that looks wrong or off. Everything is still at a stage where it can be fixed. Right now I have been working on getting a tac squad painted up, as well as testing ideas to convert bikes similar to the epic ones, with sloped front panels and side guards. See pics below. I may end up using the leg guards from a defiler though, as it is less gs work and I don't want to have to find replacement parts for the dark eldar bikes it would take to do them all this way.

Too bad a lot of his stuff isn't very good rules wise right now. If only his followers could have 3+ Invuls like the Space Marines.

But getting back on topic. This is the ultimate Tzeentch thread. It wins. I love the conversions and the painting.

I'm not sure I am satisfied with the bike, so I played with some sculpee to try and get more of the feel of the epic bikes I want mine to look like. I like the bulkier, more modern look of this kind of bike so I am starting again with another conversion to try and get closer toe the clay model.

Also includes some more shots of the first trac sqaud coming along since I had the camera out. Also too ka pic of the crate for the drop pod(which besides being scenic is the crater of dif ground for when it explodes). It also keeps the pod slightly off center so they are not all pointing straight up.

It sounds to me liek he was just kidding Squig_Herder, but thanks for watching my back!

Commisar: Anytime! I will usually be there any given Saturday unless there is a tourney somewhere else.

update time:

Every once and a while I stop and match my models to my fluff/theme. I noticed that I was not representing the magic and sorcery that I intended to portray with this army. So while working on the bike upgrade (another failed attempt, but I am getting closer) "I had some left over green stuff and used it to add some all seeing eyes of tzeench to some of the models, as well as making some flaming power fists and a flaming power sword. I also added a little extra to the terminator joints. I looked at the terms and there was a gap(Thanks AlIi B) that normally I would just live with, but decided to fix to go the extra mile with this army. Oh and also an update on the tac squad painting progress. I am almost done with base colors and will start highlighting soon. Of course there is another wave of cleanup before I get to that. The blue has gotten marred in several places, so I will need to go back with the dark and the enchanted blue again before moving on to the highlights for them.

If you guys spot anything that seems out of place, please point it out. I am taking a little longer than usual on this army, and I want things to look just right.

So I got a little more painting done. As you can see from the pics I am not that great at layering/blending yet ... Any veteran painters that have some tips on making my transitions smoother? I have a whole army to go, and I am hoping to work out most of the bugs before getting the whole army painted! LOL! Anyway here it is, The sister on the right is my poor attempt at advanced painting, the on on the left is the base colors before I start building up the lighter shades.

Ask and you shall receive! The overall shape is about done. I will probly put a thin layer on top of all the main "chassis" to hide the different layers and all my thumb prints. The small ribbed peice to go on the back may get redesigned to be slightly bigger. I'm not sure if I like it the way it is. I may also decide to try and make flaming braziers to put on the back of all the bikes to keep the sorcery theme rolling.

Things that I still have to do:

Model on the bolters
Take the "gears" on the side off and remake them. They are a little different in size and I put them there in a hurry just to see what it would look like, I need to be careful aligning them as well so they are symmetrical.
As you can see the bike now dwarfs the marine. So I need to either raise the seat and the handlebars or put some spacers in the marines so that their head and shoulders are higher than the front of the bike. Either that or model a window on there so it looks like the rider is supposed to be fully encompassed from the front.
I need to add a little headlight thingie that I like from the epic model to the front.

Painting update: Almost done with the tac squad ... Just need to add some static grass, finish highlighting a few colors and finish the banner and the eye of tzeentch on the multi melta.

The banner is going to be covered in magical symbols, circles, etc.

Once I finish it's on to painting the terminators, or one of the vehicles. If
I decide its time fro a break from the infantry I have a land raider/crusader/redeemer to convert and paint, or a rhino/razorback/predator/Whirlwind that is almost finished converting. I'lll add up pics of that next time I have my camera out.

Thanks AlIi B!

Ratbarf: Dark eldar bike fusalage with a little wing of plasticard gs'd to hide the seam and the spike holes. I like this look as well, and I was going to do them this way, but I decided having to come up with something to replace the parts on 5 DE bikes wasn't worth it(just to add parts to 10 marine bikes), and since I was in a creative mood I decided to sculpt my own.

Update time again:

Pics of the finished tac squad below. I am rather happy with the banner .. it's not perfect, and the lines could have been a little cleaner ... but overall I like it.

In progress shots of the terminators and the term champion .. erm sergeant... yeah...not used to the anti-heretical terminology here. Everything is magnetized, and Thunder hammer and storm shield arms will follow when I finish up this batch. The fleshy brown will be the base for all of the scriptures and scrollwork, which will get a wash, then a layer or two of tan/white. The layering could still use some work, but I am pretty pleased with it so far as it is better than what I have done before and this is still a new technique for me.

Love the banner!

Love the fading blue scheme!

I didn't think I was going to like them because people like to get crazy with the chaos color schemes, but wow! very clean and vibrant. WELL DONE!

side note:
The purples and reds on the tac squad kinda threw me off. If you grey/black the tubes on the weapons and made the gloves gery/black/white or the fleshy/ cream color would bring more attention to the awesome work on the armor..

First, thanks again to those who posted earlier. I have been busy with work and have had very little time to work on this project until just recently. I had thought about the color clash from the reds and purples, but those same colors tie these models in with the rest of the units and From my fantasy upbringing I just don't think a figure feels right without some bright colors.

Way overdue update: Terms are finished! Well, I still have a little tiny bit of work on the rocket I added to the cyclone, and I still have to paint up the THaSSh (Thunder Hammer Storm Shield ... hopefully I can coin this term and call it mine bwa ha ha) arms, as well as power weapon arms when they fill double duty as choas terms. Oh and icons that can use the same magnet that keeps the cyclone launcher in place.

I still think these could have been better but I already have 3+ weeks spent on them, and there is a point where you have to let go and move on. This whole army is a bunch of new techniques for me, and I am happy with the progress I have made so far.

The pics!

Ork: I'll think about the base trim. I have never liked brown as a base trim, but I might t oa test model with black. If I decide to change it it would be a pretty monumental task as it would mean redoing the base trim for my sisters, chaos, guard, and This Tzentchy SM army. I use all four interchangeably( i.e. I have seven rhino chasis tanks. 3 of them are straight up rhinos, while the other four can become whirlwinds, exorcists, predators, immolators, etc. ) so a change to one army is pretty big. Still, I will try a model and see what I think.

LBursley/Yenom: Thanks! I liked the axe as well. It was based off the power weapon the salamanders sarge has in the new dex(pg 111). It was fairly simple to achieve, though it did take several layers and washes. Lich purple, a mix of lich purple and tentacle pink, tenticle pink, whitehighlights, a very watered down purple wash(from the oh... 10 year old line of paints LOL), and then straight purple wash to fill back in some of the darkest spots. Finally a skull white highlight on the sharp edges.

ALI B: Thanks I really liked the idea of flaming power fists, and they turned out ok. I will put up a group shot of what is painted so far as soon as I finish the Rhino I am working on.

Speaking of which, on to the pics! I am getting pretty far on the first rhino for the army, and I finally took pics of my first two thousand sons(aka Sternguard). THe flaming skulls will be the combi weapons. Two skulls with purple fire will be plasma, one skull with red fire will be melta, and (not pictured) a yellow fireball for flamers. They are all magnetized behind the boks/scrolls so they can be taken off when used during the game. In the GrimDark there are only Flaming Skulls!

that model looks great. my only concern is with the termies and their backpacks. they're painted really well (great job on the purple btw didn't notice how good the power weapons were!) and look great from the front, but they look a bit clumsy from behind. i do like the green trim though, makes me remember when gw had all the bases of the 'eavy metal models green...

fantastic! Ive always wanted to do a thousand sons army & really take my time with some blends. You dont often see Tzeentch armies, & theyre the coolest, fluff-wise, in my opinion.

Can I just ask, how are you magnetising the arms & things. Its a technique Ive not heard of being used before, but it makes a lot of sense to me. Can you recommend magnets to use, & how to go about attaching them to models?

mephi! you need to give yourself more credit then this.
this is seriousely one of the best color choice i have seen.
i can tell its original as no one ever attempt mixing these different contrasts together and have it look SO NATURAL and right. are you by any chance an art major or professional painter ? the sisters of battle color choices are just amazing.

the sisters banner is just amazing, the color choice is as professional as you would expect to see on ad campaign for a product.

ALIi B: Thanks! I developed a lot of my minature habits from the GW of the 90's so that is indeed where my green base bias comes from. The backpacks did not end up as cool and awesome as I originally thought they would, but to me I still think it was worth it to pull the model away from the neat and clean look of regualr marine termies.

Typhus: For the vehicles the blue is Midnight Blue, Enchanted Blue, and Ice Blue highlights and drybrush across the flat surfaces, and then hard white highlights .

For the terms I used multi layers:
Midnight blue base
2 parts midnight 1 part enchanted
1 part midnight 2 parts enchanted
enchanted bue
Asurman blue wash to tie things together
2 parts enchanted 1 part ice
1 part enchanted 2 parts ice
ice blue
1 part ice blue, 1 part white
white
final watered down asurman blue wash to tie and soften the layers.

SomecallmeJack: Thanks for the props! Magnetizing weapon arms, upgrade options, etc is fairily cheap and easy. Buy magnets from a cheap but reputable source. I use kandjmagnetics.com. They are cheaper than most online vendors, have a great selection and often throw in a few extra magnets with every purchae. I just recently bought about 1,000 small magnets for just over $50. to get started a small order of 100 -200 is fine and less than $20 including shipping. I try to get a couple of people to pithc in and make one order together to save on shipping.

I either drill a hole and glue the magnet in the hole of the arm, upgrade etc, or I superglue the magnet on a flat surface of the arm/upgrade and use greenstuff around it to give it some strength. Any but the smallest of these magnets have a great deal of force and without the greenstuff I have had the magnets break off the minature rather than seperate. This allows for models to have multipele options for a fraction of the cost(instead of buying two models and arming them differently).

Flaming Gaunt: Thanks!

LunaHound: Thanks! I like the colors myself and happliy chose them. I do appreicate everyones feedback though, as I have lost numerous painting compettions because of my use of bright colors did not fit in with the crowd that favors darker more realistic models. Neither view is more correct than the other, and I try to see my models from both sides before I decide which appraoch I like better. I am not a professional in any aspect of art, I do dabble in many forms of art though, from pencil drawings, to computer drawing and coloring, and obviously modeling and painting. I often find it hilarious that I can paint minatures fairly well but canvas paint as well as a 3 year old with ADD.

Thanks for your opinions, I am spending a great deal of time upping my standards for this army and it's good to see that it is generating the desired result!

I was playing with a AoBR dreadnought and decided to cut it up and try for a more dynamic pose. I am still fiddling with the arms ... I will still be adding some pieces so they are not so ... separate... from the main body, as wll as some sorcerous Tzeentch gubbins. THe arms wil lbe magnetized in the end as well. The blue tac is just for testing the overall look of different poses.

Thanks again for the comments!

Shumagorath: are you referring to the models in general or the dred?

Zhetsuken: I am wrestling with that one now a well. I have the Marneus and honor guard box, but I converted everyone else from scratch. So I am debating making mods to the Marnues model itself or just working from the ground up. I still haven't decided which to go for. Before this is done one of the two will happen.

Ok, some updated pics of the dred. I didn't realize my primer was almost out until I started spraying ... so I had to stop part way through as I didn't want to get to the very last dregs that sometimes splatter on with a rough texture. It also went on shinier than usual, it is usually a pretty flat color but I noticed it was shiney on the front this time.

I exteneded the arms to about double their thickness and left a recess where the piping could go into the arm. I also magnetized the arms so they can switch out to whichever configuration that I want. Oh and I added some eye symbols and one of the chaos upgrade plates with the face writhing in the metal, as well as the back skull spines. I also added more leg plates to the back of the legs. And built the missile launcher from a spare whirlwind missile part that I only had the front missile piece to, as well as an Iron clad seismic hammer and grenade launcher arm from scratch.

anyway, on to the pics.

Its been a while since my last update. I diversified my army plan and now am working on a little of all 4 of the main chaos cults at once, instead of just tzeentch. I think that much of one color just got to me and well anyway!

Still working with layering and such, still not the best at it but I am liking the results I am getting. So here are my berzerkers and their WIP Rhino as well as a WIP chaplain(who also has a spare combi flamer arm to become chaplain cassius when I run my chaos as marines if the fancy takes me.

Oh yeah, the weapons started out with the intention to be non metal metal, but obviously that didn't work out. I did however think they ended up looking kinda kewl anyway and decided to highlight and finish them like that anyway.

Next up is a plague marine squad, their rhino and a converted nurgle DP.

Krusha 123: Thanks! I hate using things straight out of the box (one of the reasons I haven't really done my full sisters army, there is just so much work you have to do to convert them!)

Deadly chicken and JD: Thanks! Like JD mentions they are the first plastic run of chaos warriors(not counting the one from hero quest and warhammer quest. These were Chaos warriors with Halberds, plus a few arm swaps, and pistols added to their shield arms. They are old figures, and in some areas (like detail) they pale to modern plastics, but in other regards(their extreme coolness) I like them better than current plastics. I had them lying around because I bought them when they came out and were one of the first multi-part kits available in plastic for fantasy and they just had sheer coolness from being able to pose them, etc without chopping them to pieces.

Fatal_Grace: Thanks, but no worries. Keep posting your stuff for critique and I'm sure you'll surpass me in no time.

Golden Eyed Scout: Thanks. Be sure to clean up. The crew compartment comes out and can be replaced with a razorback top(still converting it), or a predator turret.

Here are some pics of the Tunnel Sniper that didn't make it into the final image. I exteneded the rifle a bit as the regualr lasgun didn't look right, and added some green stuff to the arms to get the rifle position correct.

I experimented with rust on the grate on the side ... turned out ok, if not as neat as Grey Deaths rust on his orcs/tutorial.

More chaos to soon follow, I am painting up a Slaaneshi Terminator champ for a paonting contest on anther website, and that needs to be done by the 13th. Also mean to get some work done on my nurgle DP, hehas all his basic greens done and I just need to take a photo of him to post up.

Post by: Mephistoles1

Thanks! The sniper was super fun to do. I had considered a ghillie suit, and mine has a very teeny tiney one on his back, but since he represents a tunnel fighter I didn't go overboard on it. More like a ghillie shawl. I'm sure some sniper in RL just keeled over as the thought of a Ghillie Shawl entered the world just now and in a random fit of paradox made his logical existence obsolete.

Anyway ... I have had an IG army for quite a while and the new dex has got me a little fired up to make some conversions. So I tore apart a Russ hull that I got in a trade(its construction was done less than well, and I only made a few quick attempts to clean it up. My main goal here is to see an envisioned alternate form. Many of my additions are crooked at the moment. I was more interested in seeing the overall effect than in perfect neatness, since I am not sure of anythings permanent placement yet. I will probably trade or sell this one away when I'm done rather than fixing it, and make mine from new kits. I just don't think the effort of going back and cleaning everything up would be worth it. I am making templates of the pieces as I go so making new ones should be a cinch.

I still have a decent bit of work to do with this ... need to green stuff the magnet on the turret, right now it is sticking out awkwardly, need to put some detail on all of the gun barrels, magnetize a heavy bolter to switch out with the lascannon that is already magnetized, add some armor plates to the top and the sides toward the rear, as well as glue in the top portion and cover the gaps, add rivets everywhere, etc. But please do point out anything you see or think should be different, added, etc.

I also play warmahordes, and I recently purchased a Scout model for Cygnar. When I dry fiteed the peices he looked just to squat, so I started working on his legs to give him a little more dynamic positioning.

Anyway, on to the pics.

are those the magnets? if so i reccomend drilling a hole for them in the turret. if the plastic is too thin then build it up with GreenStuff & sprue.

p.p.s can you post me the gatler stats. ty

Yea I remember a FLGS employee telling me about that new tank. It was.... if I remember correctly STR5 AP- heavy20. Yea thats right 20 shots! Sure everything gets an armor save but damn!
My only gripe really is.... please dont tell me that in the middle of your gatling gun that extended part isnt a barrel. Simply because it being in the middle just doesnt make sence. If it is an extended barrel, put it either on the top or bottom barrel.

Deadly Chicken: Yep. There currently is a gap. The magnet that I put in the turret was not strong enough when I started making additions to the barrels, so I glued on a second one. I'll either replace the original with it or build up around it so it is flush with the guns.

And yep, that will be my Punisher cannon with the stats King Cracker mentions above.

King Cracker: RL Gatling guns revolve around a central axis.

From Wikipedia: Although the first Gatling gun was capable of firing continuously, it required human power to crank it; as such it was not a true automatic weapon. Each barrel fired a single shot as it reached a certain point in the cycle after which it ejected the spent cartridge, loaded a new round, and in the process, cooled down somewhat.

This configuration allowed higher rates of fire without the problem of an overheating single barrel. Some time later, Gatling-type weapons were invented that diverted a fraction of gas from the chamber to turn the barrels. Later still, electric motors supplied external power.

I will probably make a small armature that comes off the bottom of that longer central piece. Thanks for pointing it out though, If one person looks at it and thinks "wierd" then people I play against might do the same. WHen I'm done with it it should look normal.

Thanks for the comments.

phillippowel: I will be posting some nurgle conversions in a few days, and a PIP of my Nurgle Demon Prince. Thanks!

Since MK II warmachine has had my interest a little, so I bought and built a Hammersmith. I don't like the way the model is kind of closed in on itself, so I altered its pose to be stepping up onto a rock(this also made him stand a little straighter rather than the leaning forward look of the original model. I extended the hammers with brass tube since they looked silly with no haft at all. I also switched his shoulders so that his arm positioning would be different, which cause the back of his torso not to fit on so I had to saw it down to make it fit. :( Finally I gave him some eyes so that he can glare at other models while he bashes them around!

OK, just to prove that I can finish something that I started: Here are some shots of the finished Hammersmith and Squire.(they still need to have their bases finished though, static grass and maybe a log or something, etc.) Oh and an extended spear on a centurion. I will probably hit the figs with a light dull coat as well to tone down the super shiny look. I think that the gloss coat gives you much better protection, and on figures you intend to play with it helps reduce the maintenance on the figs.

Comments and critique welcome, and thanks for the earlier feedback!

I have had two trench terrain piece ideas in the works for a while, kind of on the back shelf but occasionally doing something like cut out some foam, etc. After joining here and seeing all of Johns terrain, and visiting terrain thralls I decided it's time to do some more work on these.

Project #1: is a single raised set of trenches (not individual pieces, just one large piece with a trench system in it). I have already made a major mistake in this project. I have very little patience when I get excited for something and I often rush into a project knowing that I'm not doing it the best way. In this case the bug struck again and I decided to move forward using foamboard as the base. My jigsaw got lost in my last move somewhere and I didn't want to wait to buy hardboard and a new saw. BIG MISTAKE. And sadly I knew that ahead of time and did it anyway :( It not only warped at the edges, but it bowes up in the middle as well. So now I need to rebase it on hardboard, which will entail a fair amount of work, but now that I am a bit calmer that's ok. I think I can lift the foam and the wall works without trouble and will just have to redo the mud on the ground. And who knows, maybe it will all just come right up and plop right back down onto the less likely to warp hardboard.

The overall goal or this is to look like it is wet mud, so the trenches and crates will have water effects applied to simulate pooled water and runoff. I also started to make a raised flooring(you can see the fat posts on the ground I laid to begin that. I changed my mind however when this exposed too much of the figure and would mean painting would have to be done on the board separately since I want to paint the bottom of the trench and apply the water effects. I decided to cut the difficulty back and instead I added a few places with boards sitting directly on the floor. No point in showing how nasty the mud filled trenches were if everyone is walking on nice elevated boards.

So, steps so far:
Cut basic shape from 1" insulation foam.
used celluclay to add mud to the bottom and sides
used cut up skewers for posts and a set of wood picks and sticks for posts and boards, as well as some balsa wood for larger boards.

Steps to go
Done! rebase on hardboard once I get a new jigsaw It was a pretty easy transition and I only lost about 20% of my previous work.
Finish boarding up the walls, including snipping any of the posts that stick up too high after sandbags and other debris is added.
Re mud the floors and add spills where the dirt is breaking through the trench walls.
texture the surface and parts of the trench floor.
Add sandbags and other details
paint and apply small amounts of a glaze waterlike effect to create the wet mud look.

Project #2 Is a fortified hill. Also large (about two foot by one foot), the hill has a fortified dugout and a raised gun emplacement with a trench running between the two. The gun emplacement is big enough for a 40k tank, but is also designed to fit war machine artillery like the trencher chain gun. So far all I have done on this project is cut out the foam and glue it together.

Project #3 Base and paint a muddy war torn set of 2'x4' hardboard panels to be a base for them. I bought 4 panels with the intent of basing both sides to have interchangeable terrain. Has anyone tried this before and if so were there any issues with paint chipping/wear and tear? They will get a coat of spray on sealer, so I'm hoping this won't be too much of an issue. Since I plan to use these at my FLGS having them on the carpeted tables there makes me think the wear and tear would be minimal. It does mean the boards will need to stay flat with mostly just texture and color though.

Any critique or comments are welcome.

Mike

THe second one is cut with a hot wire cutter, in this case the electric one. I actually prefer the battery powered cheapo one better, but after shelling out for so many sets of D batteries I finally bought the electric one.

WOW! I have only read the first two pages but from what I have seen I am utterly in awe! The idea of chaos sisters is great and I remember reading about it in the newest Ciaphus Cain novel; I was thinking you might have got the idea from there. Anywho they are astonishing and well amazing!
