For this blog something very different.
Normally I paint a full army in 2-3 weeks, whilst on holidays, ready for the tournament season the next year.
SO far I've done:
SOB without sisters.
WHFB Daemons (Tzeentch)
Dwarf Slayers
Vampire Counts
Lizardmen
But at the moment I'm starting 2 armies, High Elves and my beloved Blood Angels and in Feb with the rerelease of Lizardmen I'll be going back to them to fill out my army even more. And I've even been looking at an Imperial assassins training team as a stand in for a spyrer team for =][=munda... bought my first model a few days ago.
So rather than doing a blog for each, and trying to kill myself by painting 14-16 hours per day I thought I'd just do a blog that runs a calender year, or maybe even longer if the fancy takes me.
Painting will be sporadic, some weeks I'l get a heap done, other none, but will do prep work.
Hopefully when I'm on holidays I'll get at least a unit done per week, and will aim for one per month when I'm working.
Lets see if it all works out.

So to start off my new Blood Angels.
A bit of background.
When I first got into 40k back in 1990 in my first year of high school a friend in my boarding house and another guy in another boarding house played.
My friend crimson fists, the other guy eldar.
I too wanted to do crimson fists as they were on the cover of the rulebook.
After being told that would not be appropriate I read the book and picked blood angels.
Of course back then they were just Red Marines 'HURR!'.
I remade the army over and over again, made other armies but always came ack to them. My last army was none in 1999/2000 and I haven't even pulled them from their box since 2002.
So now I start for the 6th, and hopefully last time.
Resin bases from back-2-baseix, metal shoulderpads from mail order.
Angry, red, marines.... just how I like them.

So to start us off it will be the most excellent Masters Of The Chapter models Apocalypse release and Dante.
All my independent characters will be on 40mm bases.
Dante perched on a ruined column. LOS I care not for I want him to look cool.
I'm taking them out the back now to be sprayed black.
I'll start painting them tonight and will prep all their attatchments.

Blogoramarama 6 is shapping up to be most excellent. Each of the armies (and factions) should be very interesting, particularly with the different paint jobs.
How are you going to do the elves? Classic white/blue?
How many stegadons are you going to get?

Ah, very good. Another gonads blog.
Your Lizardman blog was fairly impressive, both in quality and quantity of models painted.
So Im looking forward to this, and so far I like what Im seeing. The bases are great. Will you use elaborate bases like this for every marine or just main characters?
Also, on the bottom pic (Dante from the side), Dante looks like hes leaning back quite far, and it looks a bit "one-sided" since all the action is on one side of the base. Wouldnt it make more sense to turn him the other way, making it look like hes pushing off of the column?

He's in that position so that when he has his jump pack on it looks like he has just come in to land.
Took 3 goes to pin him to the correct position.
As to the high elves it will be purple and white, with DE bits mixed in for a Nagarythe theme.... and if all goes well a conversion is going to be commissioned for my dragon in a couple of weeks to look something like this...

Okay, I figured it had to be either him coming in, or kicking off.
Ill reserve final feedback till its done
A Dragon like that would be Ace.

I'm looking forward to seeing you do up High Elves, especially after seeing your Lizardmen blog.
I recall seeing that Flame-breathing dragon in a blog on the ulthuan.net forums - can't wait to see you get paint on something similar.

The Masters of the Chapter I share in thinking that they are awesome. In fact, one of the best sculpts of recent times, I think. They exude a unique power.
Oh, and that dragon needs wind-relief. Just hope that doesn't come out of his back end.
Stay safe,

Correct.
I'm getting an ex multiple slayer sword winner to do it but he hasn't sculpted flame on this scale.
You need a centrepiece model that just drops jaws to win best painted at Australian tourneys now and this should do nicely...

Time for a quick update...
Some rough and ready pics to show my progress. No painting yesterday thans to having to clean the house and visitors.
But got a couple hours in this afternoon.
Dante:
Black undercoat (will be standard for all models).
Shining gold
Burnished gold
Gryphonne sepia
Burnished gold
Will finish the metal tonight.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
The captains.
Just at the shining gold stage...
Have skipped ahead on 4th captain. Still very WIP but tried the cloth technique (with a couple of mods) for the cape from the sicarus eavy metal article in the latest WD, which is a great article. Very happy with the results.
Damned mithril silver highlights are too striking with the flash on...
Busy tomorrow morning but hope to get to my local GW tomorrow afternoon for some good painting time...
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Have essentially finished the Lord of Angelic Hosts (4th Coy fleet captain) just need to do the backpack, varnish the model then glue on the static grass (What a tale of wonder I have in store for you when that happens, having just purchased the most brilliant static grass in the history of wargaming)
Problem is I want standards for my captains so I will have to go to my local GW and see if they have any (or 4) in their bitz box... that will be a job for tomorrow after I drop off my regiment entry for last round of Oz Golden Daemon.
So I'll post pics of him when he is done.
Am loving the characters but gee they are taking alot of time.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
So in the meantime I have moved onto my fist tac squad.
there seems to be excessive mould lines on them. Many more than I remember in the past...
Here are pics of the first 5 models ready for painting.
I've since undercoated them.
Plan is...
Mechrite red base coat.
Have half blood redded the panels
Will then progress onto baal red wash whole model.
Another blood red half highlight (leaving some baal red coated blood red visible)
Blazing orange highlight
Then the metal and odds and ends.
Will need to keep it to that to keep the army paintable or it will be hours and hours per model.
I expect this first model will take a couple of days as its the test model.
But when full 10 man squad production line work should be 1-1.5 hours per model excluding washes drying time.
372
Post by: grey_death
It's funny how everyone has been taking wash dry time into account now ^_^.
I really think the new plastic kits are great, but they are definitely miserable with mold lines these days. AoBR comes to mind...
Your plans seems sound enough, now to see it in practice!
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
The baal red dried in about 5 minutes, but devlan mud on bases takes ages....
602
Post by: lasgunpacker
I was not too sure about the gold on your captains, as they seemed to be way OTT gold, but once you got the white wings painted and the red cape, suddenly the eye has something else to look at, and wow!
The bases for the tac marines are a bit tall though... they distract from the whole "base is just a bit of ground I happen to be standing on" rule by being so darn large. Your opinion is probably different though.
4746
Post by: Flachzange
Okay. The gold looks pretty good, though I agree with the Mithril Silver producing some serious contrasts there. If you say its due to flash though, I belive ya.
I thought the same as lasgunpacker about the Captains. The green shoulderpad rim really breaks it up nicely and the white looks great. So does the cloak by the way.
I really like the elaborate bases for this army and Im looking forward to some standard marines.
411
Post by: whitedragon
A devlan mud wash over the gold and silver should take the heavy contrast out if you're that concerned about it!
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
I've since added some gold to it to blend it out.
The actual transition to mithril silver isn't visible, except in flash photos.
I've just about finished the first tactical marine (eyes, company symbol and backpach to go), and now my camera won't take anything close to a decent approximation of the red effect I did.
So I'll paint up the whole unit before posting to see if multiple models help.
Currently I'm running at 1 character and 5 troops per week.
Horrendously slow but am only painting 2-3 hours per day. Normally I'm cranking out 14-16 hours per day and the models are already assembled, ready for painting.
Next week I'm buying the LOTR great eagle to go with my ridiculously large WHFB giant eagle. So I may start on them, and do another character.
Not sure yet, but I'd like to have a small gameable force for my BAs (say 600 points) by Christmas.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Also need to make a decision as to what company to make these guys.
Most people seem to go the second company with yellow company symbol and one of the staffers at my store has a considerable force of 2nd coy BAs.
3rd is probably my favorite ATM.

Also Badab Black is so far the only wash I don't like.
Doesn't seem to have enough pigment.
I much rather a watered down chaos black used as a wash.

I like it because it is more subtle. It's got the right qualities I'm looking for when I'm trying to shade recesses. Watered down chaos black is definitely better for lining and harsh shading though.
As to company, I have no input, not exactly sure what each ones colors are.

Was reading the WHFB O&G book the last few days and got the sudden and overriding urge to do Orcs and Goblins.
I had the Battle for blckfire pass models sitting in my shed so I cracked out a few NG archers to do test paint jobs on.
Cork for rock, GW sand for basing.
Sprayed black...
The next coat (1 layer everything except 2 for skin and 2 for the bow and arrow shafts.
Yes they look pants.
About to be Devlan Mudded (already done)
After the devlan mud has dried I'll rehighlight where needed.
Essentially I am after an extremely quick scheme that I can pump out 20 models per day including assembly and basing.
I'll need advice when the models are finished on which scheme (black with heavy grey highlights or black with fine grey highlights) to go with. But please wait for the finished models.

Post by: grey_death
I think I would have painted it all grey and hit it with badab black since you're doing it this way.
Looking forward to seeing the finished models though.

I have to go to bed now (11.30pm here and the wife wants sleep) but the devlan mud has dried and I've started highlighting (just a quick job) one of them.
The wife will be going to buy clothes tomorrow so I'll camp out at the GW and paint whilst she is shopping for a couple of hours. So I'll finish the highlights and post finished pics up in about 16 hours.
I am so impressed with the effect the devlan mud has worked. Probably a little dark in some places, necessitating the highlights but overall an amazing effect, perfect for O@G, chaos and any other 'dirty' races....
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Finished alot earlier than I had thought.
I'm making a poll here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/222669.page
Please help me decide on which one to go with.
My wife has picked, I've picked but I need other opinions.
Anyway here are the biggerised pics.
For 10 minutes of assembly/cleanup, 20 minutes of painting, and about 1 hour of drying time (primarily the glue for the sand, undercoat and devlan mud) it turned out really well.

Looks good. I was expecting to like the black with gray highlights more than the grey, but I think that the wash has toned things down to the degree that I now like the grey more.
The red bows look great of course. I would also suggest a darker color for the teeth and nails, like rotting flesh for instance. Might help to make them seem a bit more "realistic".
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Darker teeth has been suggested in the modelling post, I'll look into it...
Went to paint today at my local GW whilst the wife shopped and got a heap done on my Dante model and finished the armour on another marine.
I'm really enjoying painting at the store, people to talk to and in airconditioning.

A tutorial on how to do the mass basing using cork as rock.
The same is done for the small bases but obviously on a smaller scale.
I'm using strip cork bought from a hobby store that is designed for model railway as basing under the railway tracks.
3mm thick, about 35mm wide and 3m of cork for $5AUS (about $6US)
Part of the strip next to my first 5 bases...
The cork laid on top of a 40x40mm base and cut to fit the top exactly.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Grabbed my box cutter and scraped off the edges in a random manner, the cork just falls apart and makes it really easy.
Lower angle shot.
Shot with another, smaller piece to look like a crag for more variety in the unit.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
The batch all done up and glued down (use superglue).
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
4 NGs based.
2 BFBP NGs and 2 regiment box NGs to try and add as much variety as possible.
The eventual plan is no filler bases... currently I'll need around 200 models for my 2000 point NG army.

Are the goblins removable from this base? If not, you're going to find it damned tricky to paint them!
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
I'll have no major problems with painting them.
I'm used to painting larger bases.
A couple of years ago I did a heap of bases like this (all with a 20-0 brush and about 10 layers on the bone) :(
Also I made sure I could jam a brish in the recesses.
The problem I do forsee is drybrushing the cork around the NGs and trying not to mess up the robes too much.

I think it would fit the theme of the army, coming down from the mountains in winter (I'm using yellow/brown flock) but not sure if there will be reoom for it with the flock.

Red bows? Very 1993.
The ones on the end look great, and I'm liking the ''four to a base'' move.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Still alot to go (need rehighlighting on the end ones.
Also the 4 bases look good and are easy for game play but they do slow painting time as you try to get into the middle. The long thin regiment bases are better for painting.
Hour 11.
All the bleached bone done.
Also note that the hour before I had changed the banner top icon to a BA one (from a High Elf Sprue)

Hour 12
Devlan mudded another one, and finished the highlights on the faces of the first unit done.
Also did the highlights on the base.

Hour 13.
Did a heap of work on the banner. Used the same cloth technique as per the SM commander but didn't come up as well.
ALso did the faces on the second finished base of NGs.
The banner is really, really slowing this down. :(

Back from picking up our new SUV so will finish the update.
The baneer took probably 2 hours of solid painting, no problems spending that amount of time on it as they will only be on the company commanders.
Hour 14.
Finally finished most of the banner (starting to drive me nuts), just the top piece to go.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Hour 15.
Finally free of the banner (likely 3 hours spent in total on it including assembling to the model) motored ahead on the NGs.
Highlighted the robes and devlan mudded the last 2 bases.
Did the the base on the previously devlan muded base.

Where the banner went to:
Lazarus, Captain of the 4th Company and Lord of Angelic Hosts.
Just need to spray varnish and add flock. Too humid to do it today.
Happy with: Pretty much everything (Could try to fix the face a bit but its good enough).
The BA symbol on the banner is a transfer that I then painted over to remove the shine.
Also on the white circle covered up most of the grey I was using for depth as it was way too grey, much happier with it now.
The bnner is ringed with green for the 4th company and Fourth is written on the banner.
Only problem was that to get the banner and backpack to fit I had to rip off the already glued arm, cut off the 'ball' for the backpack on the back of the main model and then reglue everything.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
3/4 view. (and probably best)
Rather conveniently the captain models are covered in styelised wings (and no ultramarine iconography)
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Right side.
hunderhammer is glued to the back banner for extra strength for both pieces.
Happy with all the scrollwork, out came the 20-0 brush for that.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Back.
The banner looks crooked because the cloth flows in a different direction to the rest of the model and the model is not set perfectly upright due to the base.
The BA symbol on top, I'm so glad I did it, I think I'll do it for all my captains.
And that is where I got to last night.
Will do some more assembly this weekend, of spear NGs. I'm going away and space to paint will be full of drama but scraping off mould lines and tearing up cork shouldn't be a problem.

Hour 16.
At this stage the 3 completed bases are sprayed with varnish.
RANT!
After the debacle of GW's purity seal a few years ago where everything would mist up I have used several varnishes, wattyl estapol matt varnish which leaves a yellowish tinge, and testors which is way too matte and deadens metalics..
A friend who runs a game store and does commission painting said he uses a varnish called Krylon which is made in the USA.
Cheaper than GW spray varnish this stuff is amazing.
Matte but leaves the metals shiny.
Buy it, it works (as you will see from my commander).
Just the 2 bases, and the flock to go.
If the humidity ever drops so I can safely varnish again should easily get it all done in the hour.

Next up is the flocking material I was going on about earlier in the blog.
As the pic says its called Mininatur.
The flock comes stuck to the plastic sheet, extensive range of colours and lengths.
Out of the box, showing the long grass on its plastic mount:
I borrowed my wife's tweezers and just pull the clump I want off the plastic, dab a small amt of superglue to the underside (there is a layer of plastic or dried glue at the base of the clump) and stick it where I want it.
No mess, no waste.
Far and away the best product I've found this year.
I bought mine at Irrisistable Force, a FLGS (unfortunately a good 40 minute drive away on the other side of the city) that also does internet ordering (and its where I got my Krylon from)

Final pics of the finished 4th company captain.
I painted in the eyes (noticed they were missig in the last lot of pics).
Varnished, and as you can see the metal still gleams.
Added the mininatur flock. The different lengths and the way it acctually stands how you would expect grass to stand rather than a heap like the usual flock make it all worthwhile.

And the amusing thing about Krylon is that it is the "big box store" spray paint line, and very cheap here in the US. Certainly cheaper than any dedicated hobby product.

Great everything Gonads, always enjoy your blogs and this one is particularly epic. I look forward to your trooper blood angels - BA were my first 40k army too, second year of high school. But that was the start of 3rd edition
On Krylon, I like it a lot myself too, but I use Krylon gloss followed by Testors matte for my CSM. Gives them the hard coat for lots of gaming and then matte evens the shine out.

Finished the full units of archers (these will be filler bases but the usual formation will be 10 wide and 2 deep)
Hour 17
Really enjoyed painting the NGs.
The Devlan mud is a wonder and trying new techniques out on tehm was a bonus.
I know I can paint them up much quicker on individual bases but the filler bases are needed for horde armies so there will be many more to come.

Now for some fanatics to spring out of the Night Goblins.
I've decided to do the triangles for shortbows, flames for spears and squares for hand weapon units.
So they will be used on the fanatics.
Painted exactly like the SBNGs but due to having to do 2 heavy layers of devlan mud on the metal It took about an hour each to do all three.

The fanatics are looking mighty fine. The balls are nice and dirty, could use some fresh blood on them, but othervice is nice.
The bases are looking good as has been said, the effort made in making them has paid up full.

i absolutely agree with you on te static grass/ flock stuff.
It looks killer on the bases, very nice.
Dante is looking smart. The depth on the armour isnicely done and personally, I really like the white power weapons. I believe that fits in nicely.
The metallics on tjhe boltthrower are very convincing. I think that really came out very well. The crews hott, but i didnt expect anything else.

Rehighlight mithril silver
Thraka green
Gryphonne sepia
Chains and blade are badab black and then dabs of devlan mud.
Wooden handle is devlan mud.
Blood red eye
Bleached bone and white for teeth and toenails
First 3 layers took 1 and a half hours (thanks to slow drying timnes) at my local GW where I was this morning.
The last 7 steps and base took 15 minutes as my model was drying in 30 degree sun on my verandah this afternoon.

I think the color of the Plaguebearer is good, however it seems to have a metalic sheen to it. If anything, it ought to be a bit slimy. Maybe a coat of Krylon will help?
I am eager to see this tried out on flesh, to see if it gives the "glow" some claim it will.

The metallic sheen is intentional, I was trying to go for this look.

Yes, I know how it was done, I was just commenting on the metalic sheen, which is not (usualy) the desired result. As gonads DID want to do it, then my point was moot.
I agree BTW that daemons are the only army that the sheen would work with. Although come to think of it the Avatar would be awesome with a more metalic undertone...

Post by: Metsuri
I think this would work just fine with almost every army with lots of armor plates (WoC comes to mind).
The metallic sheen would look great under the greenish brown for nurgle warriors as would reddish brown for khorne.
I think I'll have to try this out with my WoC army in near future.

The following pics were taken approximately 10-15 minutes apart after drying (it was 32 celcius yesterday and the models were drying quick) and I was studying so I'd read for 10, then paint for 5 and read again whilst the models dried.

Badab black mithril silver and x2 badab black to hilt and claws.
x2 Gryphonne sepia to sword, edge mithril and x1 gryphonne sepia.

Could you skip a step by using a metalic red paint instead of silver with red over it? Getting a metalic red or red pearlesent paint should give a similar look for the undercoat.

Well I'm back to painting (or at least what I've done in the last 6 weeks).
Apart from having no time thanks to work, dakka and a baby I have just finished assembling my 2250 NG army.
Ran its first test yesterday vs the new lizardmen, wining 1st and 2nd turn, well balanced 3rd and 4th turn, then Skarsnik failed 4 leadership rolls in a row and ran off the table and a regular stegadon with no crew and 1 wound managed to clean up around 1000 points of the army all by itself. Very depressing.
Fanatics should not die if they touch a hill (who wrote that slowed rule) and giants die to saurus with spears. :(
On the bright side 6 spear chukkas terrify opponents with monsters.

So where to next?
Well I'm currently working on the last 3 crew, and have just started on 2 shamen today for the tournament this weekend.
The BAs I've been working on, I discovered a brutally quick but effective way to paint them so am going back over the models I had painted earlier (that were sending me nuts with the amount of layers and detail.
I'll be heading off on rural rotation in 10 weeks so need to start looking at what I want to paint in the 4 weeks I'm away, last time I painted 60% of a Lizardmen army, this time it will be a heap of NGs, BAs and Lizardmen...

So it has been 3 weeks since the last entry, I've assembled my current 2250 point army and have used it in a tournament with great fun.
Great thing about Night Goblins is that no one (including yourself) expect you to win so there is very little pressure.
I went:

Daemons: Draw
Dwarves: Minor Loss
DEs (with 40 shades): Minor loss
Empire all cav + stank: Massacre win, 3 models off a tabling.

To help work out who is who in terms of gear they are carrying they have been dubbed 'Pot' (because he carries a pot), and 'Snot' (Because he has a snotling on his head)
The little waagh is a great spell list, but you need to throw 3 dice at each spell to pretty much assure that you'll get it off.
Same techniques as the rest of the army but more complicated scheme around the hood.

Now onto this week's project.
My 1st O&G giant.
I love the giant models, and as hoplessly random as they are I love giants in WHFB.
So conversions are in order to help them stand out...
First off what are they best known for?
Jumping up and down and falling down.
So as my skills at converting ar not up to jump up and down which will require extensive cutting and greenstuffing I went with falling down.
So how would he fall down?
I looked in my bits box and had the sqaushed goblin and the NG that has been splatted by the cannonball in BFSFP box. So I cut out the cannon ball and embedded the NG in the cork on the base and the heel fitted perfectly in the hole with a little filler greenstuff.
I then tilted the model back, as if he was slipping on a banana peel (or in this case a NG) and greenstuffed under the feet to fill the holes.
Positioning of the arms to show a lack of balance and I ended up with (about 48 hours ago)....
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
The greenstuff under the foot.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
A good shot of the NG being trod on. They have even helpfully moddled in drag marks on the model which will help with the story.
Also I made sur the stuff he is carrying is pointing straight down towards the ground, helping to make him fall.

Have done the lower half and am working on the top now...
The skin is always a bugger to blend on the top half, so I'll have to do more than the 3 rehighlights I've done on the lower half.

Back on track...
Those in the know (the other MODS), know that I've been away for 3 weeks, working in the small (1800 people) town of Monto in Queensland as the relieving doctor.
So between 14 days at the practice and on call for the hospital for half the time I also aimed to paint a whole mess of models, primarily R&F NGs.
I'd based them and undercoated them black before I headed out so I wouldn't be doing that annoying work.
So here is the view from the driveway of the house I stayed in, literally on the edge of town.
In the distance is the town't horse track, where I went to do laps every morning to stay fit.

Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Day 1, flew in and found out that I would have to work, rather than it being a travel day, so not as much painted as I wanted to, but made a good start.
Also the stands are wedding cake columns I use to hold models so I don't mess them up when painting.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Day 2- finished all the day 1 stuff plus another 3 models (2 with nets)
It should be noted that to help differentiate my little green men I've added markings for each unit type, also to draw the eye when people are passing by, giving players choice points at tourneys.
Archers have triangles
Spears have flames
HW and shield have checks.
Squig related units have crenelated white lines.
Warmachines get nothing

Looks great so far gonads
giant adds some serious character to the army.
also, just had a random question that i was hoping you could answer for me.
Are the skull pass models any good?
at the current price they seem like a steal, was just wondering roughly how much i would need to make a small 1,250 point army.
(will include archers, spearmen, characters and spider riders all from skull pass and a giant)
models are stupidly cheap, but was wondering how much i would need points wise.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
@ JD21290: The skull pass models are excellent, especially the command group models.
The only problem is the expensiveness points wise of spear armed NGs, and the fact that anout 50 NG archers is all that you will ever need (I'm petering out at 2 units of 30 to help skarsnik generate bolts for his halbard).
NGs are a horde army, the 2500 point army I'm working to at the moment has Skarsnik (just over 200), 2 giants (410), 10 fanatics (250) and will still have 246 models!
You need lots of them.
@ Deff Dread red Edition: I've almost finished the giant, just need to add some blood to the base. Pics will come soon.
I've got pics of the day by day action, just need to upload them, so more to come later in the week.

Currently I'm aiming for a 2500 point total for a tournament, but when the O&G is 'fininshed' it should clock in somewhere between 8-10,000.
That of course will have 3 giants, 3 doom divers and 30 odd trolls of the various types, and 4-6 pump wagons just for rare selections.

Awesome. Just a few days back I was wondering what happened to this thread. Good to see that youre still going strong! And Im really liking the work youve done. Still looking forward to your other giant conversions

The next giant will be done late July.
Glenn Lamprecht 3 time OZ slayer sword winner is converting the 'jump up and down' pose.
I will be painting as I need it to fit in with the rest of the army, not a GD piece.

Last week and heading into the home straight.
I'd only have 6 days of painting as I wanted to use the Sunday to pack, and do paperwork from my time away.
So to day 15.
Not much done due to getting called up to the hospital several times.

Day 16: The archers are the last 10 of my 2 units of 25.

Day 17:
The checker pattern on this champ (and all the HW/Shield models is done by first putting squares along the edge with codex grey, then another row of squares above the spaces I.ve left.
I then go over it in skull white and then clean it up with chaos black.

The quivers are quivers that come with the NG box set.
Due date is now August 15 for the 2500 point tournament.
I just ordered the last few models, I have about 42 models, including a giant and 4 bases of snotlings to go.
Am still flocking and magnetising the models I did whilst I was away.
Anyway day 19:
Got a bit distracted today and painted up a blood angel assault trooper.
This point is about half way through, just after devlan mudding. Needs rehighlighting still.

Day 20 and the last day of painting.
Did up 6 fanatics.
Strangely they take the same amount of time to paint as 6 spear NGs...
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
3rd week fully painted.
Not as many volume wise but finished all of the NGs (and a SM not pictured) with a day to go.
I've varnished and magnetised all the models and am onto the flocking of the last 20 or so.
I have also purchased several movement trays and have finished 2, but need to do up some empty bases before I post them here, which means GWOZ needs to pull thier finger out and actually stock the 20mmx80mm regiment bases.
It was so good to go away and just paint, rather than 'wasting' a couple of hours a night on the net or TV.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
So in the last 3 weeks painting has dropped off dramatically due to a lack offree time thanks to a wife and son.
The first week was spent varnishing and flocking all the models I painted whilst away.
The movement trays are finished though I still need to buy a few more for the whole army.
Unfortunately I forgot to do pics of the mvt trays at the beginning, but will when I do the next lot.
These trays are from an independent retailer and are fantastic for skirmishers, they also have ones in 25x25mm bases and if you want to know where to get them give me a PM.
I've bases the trays to suit the basing of my models. These trays will be used for my squig hopper units.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Next lot of bases.
20mm size bases fit 5x7 with metal inserts for magnetizing.
I was going to do them all black but was overruled by the wife and I like the basing better.

Some of the NGs I did 2 weeks ago (5 of 8)
Fully based and magnetised with a rare earth magnet.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
The rest of the models from that week.
Note the troll skull from the bix box set has replaced the NG regular gong top, and used the champion's hand weapon blade and stuck it on the top of a spear for the spearmen's champ's weapon..

Totally agree. That banner really catches the eye. Well done.
Good work on those trays as well.
This army should be really impressive when seen together. Very coherent
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
The mushrooms are mechrite red, then blood red, devlan mud when the whole model gets it, blood red then white spots added randomly with a fine detail brush.
I deliberately went rough with the white highlights on shields and banners as gobbos aren't the cleanest baddies around...
A different angle for the muso and champ.
By throwing in small conversions like this it ensures that I get max points for conversions in painting scores at several tourneys.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
5 more models.
We had alot of rain last week so the varnish does not look as good as it does on the rest of the models.

Next up is the last of the models from that week.
Coming soon... SNOTLINGS!

I like the colour selection.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
I needed several consistent themes across the army.
1: Black cloaks/clothing, because it is traditional for NGs to wear that, and it is damned quick to paint. So far the only exception to that rule are the spider riders, who wear light brown because they are on the black spiders and I didn't want to lose the detail in all the black.
2: Something to draw attention to the models: Cue the Markings on the hoods. Also helps with unit recognition. An easy to do extra step that really makes the models pop.
3: Red weapon shafts. An easy way to add an army wide contrast colour to the black and green.
4: Basing: I needed something that was easy, cheap, reproducible and different to other armies. So cork and sand it was.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
So what is the best unit in the O&G list?
Snotlings of course...
At 2 models they only cost 40 points.
Don't roll for animosity so are reliable
Don't cause panic
Can capture quadrants (US 6)
Are brilliant little redirecters (even if they are infantry)
I painted up 4 units of them last week.
For the skin, I am going lighter as the greenskins get smaller.
So regular orks are knarloc green, devaln mud, knarloc green, gobbos are knarloc green, goblin green, devlan mud, goblin green.
The snotlings are goblin green, GG and bleached bone 1:1, devlan mud, 1;1 GG and BB.
After assembling 4 bases from 2 blisters I still have a heap left over, but realised last night there are another 2 snotlings on the fanatic sprue, so I'll use them on future bases.

I'm looking forward to seeing the high elves when you get to them eventually, but this is a real treat
Any chance of seeing a large pic of everything that's done so far?

Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
I'll be doing up an article for the army around mid august when the whole army is done, but I'll preview it here.
High Elves will be started late August/ Early september but I have to crank out some BAs and the Krieg are calling to me 'buy me, buy me, we are almost the same cost as cadians'...

Bas are a definite to be started in the next couple of months, I have a couple of units assembled, have a way to get them painted relatively quickly and was going to do some when I was away but just ran out of time.
the problem is (as always) too many armies and models and too little time.
The lottery is a $50 million Jackpot when I win it next Tuesday so I'll hire a GD winner to paint my models full time so I canm have time to enjoy using them.

How long does one base take to paint?
They are looking nice.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
I paint a base over 2 nights, due to the devlan mud drying time. Probably 40 minutes total spent actively painting.
A NG I can get done with 40 minutes total painting, 30 minutes until Devlan Mud stage, then 10 minutes to rehighlight and do the hood detailing.

The snotlings together.

Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Just over a month since the last update and time to catch up.
I now have all my models, including the comission conversion of my 2nd giant.
But first the great stylings of more magnetised bases.
More interesting things to come....

I have ot agree with your wife, the movement trays look much better when they
match the model basing.

6 more spear armed NGs.
Only 4 left to go and that will be all the spears done.

You should convert some of them running off the table...
116

The army is all assembled... and my NGs would never flee!
Run away to a better tactical position yes, but flee... no.
More NGs and the last of the spears.

Tomorrow... squig hoppers.

Army shot comes post tourney.
I'm shooting for player's choice and I want to leave the effect of the army as a whole as I know quite a few guys going lurk here.... anyway here are some squig hoppers.
Converted to break up the units (as there are only 4 squig hopper models)
One on the left had most of the hood cut off and regreenstuffed the point.
The one on the right just had the skull cut off and the point greenstuffed.

Next 2.
Only change to these 2 models is that I bent the feet down on one and up on the other.
Used a set of model clippers with the blades wrapped in toilet paper.

A simple twist of the right arm, each in a different direction.

The last 4 hoppers, although pairs of the same models, look convincingly like different ones. Good job on them mate!

How I do my movement trays.
This one is a custom made 40mm x 80mm (I had 4 made for my 2 base units of snotlings)
With metal sheet for magnetising.

Post by: Blightdrone
Just out of interest, how much and where do you get metal sheets from? Or is it a simple household item that I have yet to find?
Cheers,
Jack.

The hoppers look ace 'Nads, especially on that movement tray. Do you use that in game, by the way? It wasn't until I saw Malfred's welves skirmishing around on movement trays that I realized people used those for actually playing fantasy ...
- Salvage
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
I do use it in game. Also makes transport in my car to games very easy.
The metal sheets are precut from the FLGS I get the mvt trays from. This set I had straight from the guy who makes them.
The metal glued in with super glue

The trays and the army are shaping up well,I like the squig hoppers alot.IMHO they are some of GW's best models and your paint job does them justice.

Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Greenstuffed the edges to fill any gaps.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Broke out the trusty dremel and used the brush attachment to file back the greenstuff level with the metal inser.
Then PVA glue over the top of the edges and poured GW sand over it.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
When dried (next morning) I then use GW chaos black spray over the whole base.
Then I paint scorched brown over the sand.
Then a very quick, heavy drybrush of bleached bone.
116
Post by: Waaagh_Gonads
Devlan mud wash over the sand on the base edges.
Bleached bone drybrush again.
Chaos black in the centre, and the the walls of the edges. Then Krylon spray, which makes the black uniform, removing streaks.
