As the title says - I'm always doing something and why not tell everyone if they wanna see.

The plan is to simultaneously make 3 stompas. I am going to follow similar patterns to the original steam stompa design but obviously they are going to be variants. Here's a picture of the materials I have collected so far - I can only hope that this is enough to get me into the project well and truly.

So now here I embark on a new fantastic journey 3 TIMES THE SIZE of the original! I am surely going to go insane!

Anyways - I've gotten into the stompas as promised and I think I've made a mistake. After making three of the steam tanks they're actually a bit squat. And what sucks is that it took me all day to make all three. SOOOO that said I'll be soldiering on anyways, and making it work...which it should, it means I have more room for other things.

SO! We'll see how it works out.

And another thing another thing I am working on with these - I'm making them so I can disassemble them for transport. SOOO if the shorter tanks don't work out I should be able to replace them without too much hassle. Not much of a pic, but it's a pic of what I did today nonetheless.

I like the balance of one arm - I'm not sure how to make two arms work but I am toying with the weapon fitout ideas and may vary the cannon mounts significantly. We'll see how that goes.

Yes. This diary will be fantastic. The stars have aligned and my skills are at their peakiest peak that they have peaked peakier than they've ever peaked before.

You see - just a few days before I began this project, Jupiter, Venus and the Moon aligned to smile down upon the venture I had just decided on. This sign has inspired me to press on with much added gusto...or something.

I've made the hip sections much bulkier in these versions that the previous. That was probably the main complaint I had with the last one. So I rectified that, but for the moment they look like giant baby Plankton (spongebob reference) with nappies on. But that won't last - I GUARANTEE it...

After making you wait for ... EVER ... by my standards anyway I've got for you all an update. I've mostly done the legs, mostly finished the engine assemblies and got the arms started. Although I am still working out fine little details. Like the other night I had a dream and in that dream I built them with two arms instead of one - and I didn't use the cannon idea out of the original concept, the weaponry was more arm, shoulder, under-arm or belly mounted.

And there was more scaffolding.

Perhaps it was a sign of what I should do ... well I'll get to more of the arm assembly tomorrow and I'll think on it some more. Let me know your ideas on what I've been thinking. I either need to do a second arm OR the cannon assembly - sticking an arm out onto that doesn't look very good.

Ok Here is my christmas present to you all - more pictures of the stompas in progress I've done some more work on them. I know they are looking fairly uniform but to be honest it's a HELL of a lot more work to make them any more individual than this. WAY lots more work and I don't want to spend half the year just building these stompas!

Very nice work! I really prefer them with two arms, makes them look more active. Also, the guns look great! I second Flachzange, by the time you'll be finsihed they'll be pretty different from each other!

Yeah I have plenty more to do. I'm going to be adding the guns in different places, different types of armouring, crew, damage and hands, so they will end up being fairly individual.

I'm pretty happy with how the twin armed idea is turning out. Glad I took the time to check it out this far...now to work out the rest

Here’s the last update for the year – I’ve got a heap more detailing started on this stompa project. Most of this was done to the metal stylings of…various bands…so that helped me to get into the correct frame of mind whilst I builded these beasties

This gun is going to be sitting on one of the stompas, but I haven’t decided exactly where – the thought is perhaps on top with a full 360 view but that looks kinda weird, or over and arm or on a forward mounted platform slightly lower but in front of the beast:

Here's this weeks update. Plenty more done and plenty more detailing - I still haven't gotten to the point of being ready to rivet the buggers yet... I'm almost ready to start stuffing around with pilots and crew, the plan at this stage is to have a main pilot with a pilot running each arm. And then various hangers on - and with the new grot boxes coming I may just throw some of them onto the beasties as well

Well I've managed to get past the point I usually get to where I feel like chucking the buggers at the wall. That was somewhere before the platforms were finished and the guns were pretty much done. Now it's all downhill where I just fill in the details because it's mostly dealt with. All that are left to add weapon wise are the big shootas and the supa-rokkits. Everything else is pretty much fitted out.

And I can't find a copy of the new apocalypse book anyway to get a squiz at - trying to find the stats on the Klawstompa and the Stompa mob - but it's not available and it's ticking me off...I thought it was in reloaded but I dont' know for sure and there are none available to me before this weekend so when the boyz come over for a game I can properly stomp em with the 7000pts of WAAARGH!nificence!

I don't know about stompa mobs but the klawstompa is in apocalypse reloaded, I will can give you the rules:

the Klawstompa is in apocalypse reloaded (I'm not posting stats and stuff since it'll get removed). I can't recall seeing rules for stompa mobs in there.

My favourite bit so far is the right hand of no. 2, it just reminds me of the iron giant thing, it just looks so ready ro reach out and grab hold of a leman russ turret and either bend it back round or swing the tank around by it.

Still loking awesome. Number 2 has recently become my favourite. Number 1's right arm is a little odd looking, but his left arm is my favourite individual limb.

Well here's the development form the game... 3 Turns. 6 hours. Only JUST lost by 50pts, but the stompas were still standing and weathering an INSANE!!! amount of firepower. The dread mob rule is the best.

And in the course of battle, no.1 stompa took a hit from an unexpected Imperator titan (my opponent, in other words) when they were gesturing and knocked the beast off the table and onto the floor.

Smashed into 10 pieces...

Woah.

But I fixeded it, thankfully. It could have been MUCH worse .

Example of it being worse: he had a moddelling knife in his hand when he gestured and got your throat.

Well - here is an update after avoiding doing more work on the stompas for a while. The new battlewagons gave me sufficient pause while I prepared myself for the next stage on the stompa production.

The crew have been added, but photos of that later, and rivets have been started. Next after that will be bases, undercoating and then paint. Probably get to the undercoating stage by the end of next week at this current rate...if I can find something suitable to use as the bases...

Well - 1000+ rivets = 2 arms and one leg done. Damn

I have 3 stompas in total, so that works out at needing somewhere in the vicinity of 7000 rivets.

Well I've been playing around with the rivets and I tried riveting one arm with ... poppy seeds ... dip them in superglue and give them a bit of a squash with my fingernail - you be the judge. I don't mind them and they will probably look pretty cool painted up. And the slightly weird shapes suits orkology anyway.

Amazing. The concept sketch reminded me of the House of Commons/Big Ben Crocodile rampage, They used to show on Sunday at lunch. Great music, great credits boring political show. Also I like the R2D2 on steroids look, like the ancient GW Dread. The fact they look similiar but different I like, they look as if they've been created by the same twisted Ork mastermind.

What are you using to cut your rivets? I have found that a leather rotary punch works nicely for making medium to large rivets in nice even circles from plasticard.

Plus, you can do maintenance on belts!

Here we go getting to the painting stage. All the models are fully riveted, based and undercoated ready for painting. Painting starts this week and hopefully shouldn't take much longer than about 2 weeks worth of work, but that may be hopeful.

Dude these are DEFINITELY bigger than the current Stompa model. Mine are at least 25% bigger...and they've been to Jenny Craig Weight loss centre so they could lose their mumus - much to the chagrin of their ork brethren because the ride into battle isn't as comfortable as it used to be any more...

That's not necessarily a bad thing. I always thought the fatty gargant in a mumu look was both ridiculous and dumb. I mean, Orks may not be the brightest critters in the 'verse, but why do all their stompas and gargants look like overweight women in flowy dresses? Made no sense to me.

Lol - Ok kharndude I understand now No they are not as fat as the GW stompa, which is what I'm not a big fan of. But after seeing the stompa conversion with the battlewagon head and jaw, I think that beefs it up to look less overweight and more destructive.

I also like the fact that mine look like they will stomp you to death - instead of get lost under the dress.

How do you paint the metals, and painted metal plates? Do you have some silver spray and wash from there?

This time I started with a black spray undercoat, followed by heavily undercoating with a red brown, then rough undercoat of tin bits and edging with boltgun metal. That's the main colour undercoat, to give the metal more of the weathered worn effect (after I paneled in all the other colours) I used a wash of a mid orange brown, following by thin black and then various GW washes of many colours over the top of that. It's pretty intricate.

Very nice! I like how your painting style draws the eye to all the little details.

They're even better than the original one you made.

Wow these are amazing I hate to know how long this project has taken you. How did you manage to stay focused to continue working on these beauties.

The final installment in the 3 STOMPA MEGA MEK WIELDING RIVET MANIA STEEL BENDING FEST!!!!! Here's the final stompa, built, painted and sealed - ready to go!!! It's been a fun trip but it is SOOOO FRIKKIN NICE not spending 4 months building stuff any more! Since stopping building these I have built 2 landraiders, 3 dreadnoughts, 1 razorback/rhino and fixed up numerous other modelling projects.

Wow it feels good to be able to speed through something again!

Here is a breakdown of the techniques that I used to get these ones finished, for all those interested. The models were based with a nice solid undercoat of black. I like to use the dulux flat black spray. It's cheap (about $9 a can where I live) and it's very good. Much better than White Knights Squirts and definitely much more consistent.

Next I mixed up a colour that is somewhere between bestial brown and dark flesh, with a little more red. I mixed up a pot of this colour because you use the entire pot for one model - just about anyway. I make sure this is quite thin because I don't want to obscure any details. I also add a drop or two of dishwasher liquid to allow it to flow easily.

Keep in mind I am a lazy painter and the techniques I use tend to favour that. Earthy dirty muted tones are the easiest for me to reproduce using my technique, as you can see from the majority of the projects I've undertaken.

Anyhoo!

Next I wet brush on a thin mix of tinny tin (equivalent) making sure I don't cover the whole model. It's important that the red brown still shows because it's an excellent rusty metal colour.

Next is a rough blotchy drybrush of thinned boltgun metal (eq.) followed by a very thin edging drybrush of silver of some description.

At this stage I have completed the undercoat...yep that's just the undercoat

After that I fill in all the details such as panelling, skin tones, cloth and clothing areas, belts, buckles and any other broad details. I don't do any lenses, eyes, edging or anything else like that. This is basically basing the main areas ready for weathering.

After the model is dry, it's time to start with the preliminary weathering work. This is done with a huge batch colour I still have some left of. I can't explain the colours I used, just how it looks. It's a dirty dusty brown, sort of caramel in colour that I mixed up using cheap folk art paints. The mix is always different but it always ends up about the same colour. I also have a mix in the same proportions - probably thinner - of a cheap acrylic black. I have so much mixed up because I also use it as a dip on smaller models. Convenience helps me stay focussed

The mix of these paints is roughly about 30:1 water to paint, with a dollop of detergent to break the surface tension of the liquid. You need to be careful with this mix, and keep changing brushes while you apply it because it tends to foam up if you apply it too vigorously. I basically applied this mix over the entire model and let each layer dry. Because I started with such an excellent rusty metal undercoat I only did one layer of each of these two colours and used a fan to speed up the drying process.

Now I go over the model and start to fill in the details.

For the orks, I rehighlighted the green skin with goblin green, then mixed up the highlights using dead flesh, until I am left with pure dead flesh in the tiniest of highlights. Then I give it the Thraka Green wash. DAMN these GW washes are THE BOMB! GW are doing a lot of good stuff lately, I remember 2 years ago I could hardly say anything good about GW. Now they have DEFINITELY gotten their stuff together. That's my 2 cents anyway

Then I go over and do whatever other details or highlighting I want to do, tone panels, improve rust spots, paint chips - whatever.

For the corrosion on the copper areas, I start with the same colour as all the other metals, and then washed these ones with Leviathan Purple, the blue wash and the ever popular Devlan Mud. I also used the Gryphon Sepia as well. Not everywhere but all these colours are done discriminately as I made sure the effect I was aiming for was realised.

The copper oxidisation was started with Thraka green and a thin wash of Goblin Green, followed by Hawk Turquoise, Jade Green, Ice Blue and then white. Once they dried I used Devlan mud (thin) to tone it down and then re-energize the whites to improve the effect of the water stains. If there were any weird stains or lines I went back over that with a wash of darker colour to help soften the lines.

Finally, I went over the entire model with thin washes of a bright (almost fluro) orange, I let it pool in some places to give it a cool effect.

I've been toying with an idea that is a combination of these stompas and Howls Moving Castle. Thinking of calling it Mork's Stompy Kastle. Or something. But it's still a thought in progress - it would be very very large - it would have to be a gargant for the details I am considering - and shingled roof tops. A friend of mine likes shingled rooftops...
