We are running a paint and play league in my neck of the woods. The premise is to start with a fully painted 500pts. Every month you add 250pts of painted mini's till you reach 2000pts. There is a paint judging competion every month. You can only win 3 times. If you win the month you get bonus victory points. The FOC is changed slightly so you cant go overboard on any one type of slot right away.

Points are as follows.

Win - 3pts
Draw - 2pts
Loss - 1pts
Monthly paint award- 3pts (3 win limit)

Two games are played each month vs different opponents each time. In theory you can only play any given opponent once in the league. Seven month schedule for a total of 14 games.

I thought this would be a great opportunity to get a Guard army finished before the nex dex comes out. However as it is not known exactly what to expect with the new dex I felt i had to go for variety over power. So no doctrines for me. That way I can have the widest range of mini's done for the new dex. This also means that I will be fielding units that are lets just say not very good.

However I love a challenge so I'm giving it a shot. I will just say that I am a very very slow painter and choosing the guard was and is a bit daunting for me. So I started this lil blog in the hopes that my fellow Dakkites will give me some encouragement to keep going till the bitter end. Just so you know we have completed the 1000pts check point already. I will follow up with further updates as the months pass.

MONTH 1: First 500pts

Closer shot of a infantry squad.

Shot of the Ratlings

The Chimera

So the first month pretty much went as follows.

1st game. Played a chaos player in a kill points mission. (Ughh) Highlights: He had 2 squads and a expensive hq. I somehow managed to wittle down one squad and charged the other squad with my sentinel. I had to run away pretty much the entire game and it didn't look very brave at all. Tie 1 to 1

2nd game. Played a Tau player. This guy is very skilled and I have met him in various tournaments. He is always in the top 5 if not top 3. Game started out a chess match. Then the leadership became a factor. Most of his army ran off the board. His dice were decent unless it was a leadership test. Shoulda been closer. Guard win.

I managed to get the painting award the first month but a guy with sisters was late and showed up after judgeing. His stuff is beautiful. Gonna be hard to beat him in later months. Quite a few armies look good and some talented painters and skilled players are in this league should be fun.

MONTH 2: 250pts (750pts total)

The command squad. (I wanted something different so I went for a war council. From right to left. Baneblade adviser, Infantry adviser, JO (Creed), Russ adviser and Navy adviser or Steve as he has come to be know.)

Sentinel

The second month went like this.

1st Game. VS sisters. The game was great and his models were suburb. It was a kill point mission (Uggghhh) It was a tight game that had quite a few units wiped off the table on both sides. It was an honor playing against such a fantastic looking army and a great guy. We almost spent more time talking about painting then playing. Result: Tie

2nd Game. VS Space Sharks (Marines) Now this guy is a great player with great looking models. He had terminatiors and I soon realized that they are rock hard vs the list I have. I managed to kill most of his units but the termies kept beating me down. Last turn my Chimera shoots forward and the troops claims an objective. Stupid close. Stupid fun. Result: Win

I managed yet again to snag the paint award this month. However it was very close and the sisters player told me is is fielding sisters repentia and penitent engions next month. My prediction: He will win painting next month.

MONTH 3: 250pts (1000pts total)

My converted Demolisher cannon.

Karskin

My 3rd month went pretty much like this.

1st Game: VS Black Templars. I decided to challenge the league organizer for fun. I kinda forgot that templars run at you if you kill them. So needless to say he was knocking on my doorstep pretty fast. I got some lucky pie plate hits and killed almost everything he had. Turn 6 he had two models left and one was on my objective and the other was on his. So as it looked I had lost but fate was on my side and we rolled and got one last turn. I killed the two marines and got a massacre. Too close for comfort. One of the most fun games I had played so far. Result: Win

2nd Game: VS Necrons. This game was brutal and a chess match. Damned monolith deep struck right on top of my entire army and proceeded to whittle me down all game as I continued to ignore it. At the end the Chimera rushed forward and snagged a objective (again). I held 3 of the 5 objectives with 5 guardsmen. He really shaved those 3 squads down. This months game so far were my favorite. Close and bloody. Result: Win

Sisters player won the painting award this month hands down with his repentia and penetint engions. I hope I can take him in a few months. As my next months stuff is more of the same. I hope my ogren will give me a helping hand when I get around to them. There are some other good painters that will be putting the pressure on with their good stuff here soon as well.

On a side note my 2 best friends are in the league and are doing well. The BA player is curb stomping everyone and has not got a loss or a tie yet. My best friends both played a test game vs me. Yeah I got owned so bad by both of them. So pretty sure I will lose those when they come up in the league.

So recap. Having a great time playing with a seriously underpowered army. I think as we get later in the league it will get harder for me to pull wins. Since I am in it primarily for the fun I really won't care when people start stomping me. I will have my revenge when the new dex comes out.

After 3 months

Wins:4
Draws:2
Losses: 0
Paint awards. 2 of 3 possible

Please keep me painting. I'm losing my motivation.

More to follow....

Awesome stuff so far mate.
Your army is great looking. Very crisp, very clean and Im really liking the camopattern on your vehicles. Also very clean.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Maybe you could even get some of the others guys of the league to post their armies here. Id really like to see some of those as well.

Thx for sharing.

I'm amazed the sisters guy beat you, those are ace models! Put my IG to shame . I especially like the camo pattern on on the vehicles; simple but good looking and very well executed. The only thing I would've done differently is removed one section of the demolisher cannon; itl ooks a bit too long for me.

Then again, I have over 100 infantry and very litte painting , so I need to speed paint

Great job, on the stories and the painting! How about some veteran drop troops with meltas? I think you could do a great job modeling them, and they are the best unit IG has.

Yeah, the Sisters models must be pretty a amazing, your paint style is very codex-y, nice and clean.

What are you going to add next?

Thank you all for your generous responses! It really has helped me on the desire to paint.

I chose Cadian's for their fluff. I have always like the way they look and their background. I also thought they would safely survive the new Dex. So in that capacity they seemed like the best choice for me. So I kept them about as close to the codex feel as I could make them.

On a side note I am colorblind so I wanted a well established color pallet that other people could help me tell what color is what. I have to look at the wet part of the model for shading so if it dries before I'm finished with the highlight I have to start over as I cannot tell what I just did. Make the painting slow going. So the codex really helps me for the reference.

My next 250 points is.

Hellhound

sentinel with multilaser

10 man guard squad with plasma gun and ML.

Time permitting I will upgrade a flamer to meltagun.

I will try to get some pics of another army or two the next time. They will be at the store so I can't guarantee the pics will do them any justice. So hopefully It will help created a better picture of the league.

P.S. Drop Melta's will not be making an appearance in this army. I do use them from time to time with my guard (I have 2500pts of painted used mini's collected over the years.) but I needed the flexibility to run all models so I could not afford the doctrine. If I come up with a good way to do both I will make some. I choose the army piece by piece so I don't get tired of painting the same type of thing. So I don't know what I am adding after this month.

hey if you want you could get a group of terminators or if even grey knight termies to add on to your army they would be a good challenge to paint and also to play with

Well I do love terminators. I already have a pretty large Deathwing army so they will not be used. I am keeping everything pure guard and non doctrines. I am however open for suggestions for 250pt chunks. I have a Inquisitor and his retinue already painted but won't be using him as I want as much guard painted as possible before the Dex comes out.

For painting the tanks.

Primered black

heavy dry brush DA green , almost a wet brush, over the entire tank. Don't worry about treads and the like they are easy to fix later.

2 or more coats of light catachan green dry brush. lighter dry brush avoids streaks. I use newspaper to get rid of most of the paint then use my arm to remove the last bit of wetness. Do this step till you think the green looks done as the next step is very subtle.

1 coat of cammo green on the raised areas ONLY. Very light.

Paint with bubonic brown your cammo pattern. Slightly watered down. Use multiple coats as opposed to one thick coat. Till it is smooth and one color.

Use flesh wash INK over the bubonic brown. Thick or straight out of the bottle with little to no water added. Careful not to overlap with the green.

Using smaller drybrush and bleached bone bring the bone color up slowly. Multiple coats are a must here. Less is more at this stage. Light colors tend to streak so it will take a while before you start to see the desired effect. It takes time and patience but is worth not streaking the model. Do this till you think it is done as the next step is very subtle.

Hit raised areas with white.

Paint the rest of the tank as you see fit.

As you can see it is basically the same steps repeated a few times. It takes time and is slow going to get the effect with out streaks. Both green and bone have a Shadow, primary and highlight color. Just sub out for your colors and you are good to go.

I will try to get some shots of the SOB army. I love his army and would like to share it with you if I can.

The next games are on Jan 11th. So I need to get some stuff painted in time. Its all put together except the sentinel. More pics when I finish this months stuff. Hope other armies after the 11th.

Thank you. I need to take some quality pics and post them up. They are the "Vedia Golden Warriors". Tan and red for the uniform with red piping on the jackets and pants. Brown for the boots and guns to kinda tie em in and gold for the helmets. I wanted to do something differant but still with a military structure to them.

Is that the same Sentinel in the top pic as the close ups further down? I love the armored windscreen and open cockpit.....so much I think I'm gonna rip mine open and so some sawing. I love the look.

mDaro- To build that demolisher cannon is easy. It is just the standard demolisher cannon set up and just inserting the Hellhammer turret into it. Take the hellhammer barrel from the baneblade kit. Shouldn't be hard to find as most people don't use that variant. Shave off the hellhammer barrel cap. Then shave the extra nubbins from the demolisher turret cap so it is just round. And glue. Fits well. Ya might wanna shave more or do a touch of greenstuff depending on your level of perfection. If you have the bits just look at the picture and it will all make perfect sense if my wording is confusing.

Sidstyler - I get that allot.

I'm impressed! Very sharp and clean, very crisp. I usually can't get at the eyes [ stupid hands ]. I'm more of a fan of the dirty look though, but for the look of a regiment right out of training with fresh gear from the quartermaster, that looks great, if that's what you were going for.

Still looks great from here.

EDIT: Hadn't seen second pic, but the green still looks a bit duller. I really like the hardlined hullmount heavy bolters throughout this army.

Your Army look great! The only thing I wold change on the hellhound is the rust on the tanks, It looks to much like a solid line, real rust tends to bleed.

Keep up the good work! BTW what is the prize for winning?

Yeah the rust on the tanks is one of my problems with the Hellhound. I also do not like the skull motif on the side. I hope to be able to fix these problems if I have the time.

As for the prize? Ya know I never bothered to ask. The store that hosts the league is very good at awarding prizes for tournaments. However as this is a league I am not sure if there is going to be one. I will have to ask.

My goal is to beat the Blood Angles player as he is just stomping everyone in the games. If I can get all three of the possible paint awards and keep a good win / loss ratio I might have a shot. As my army comp is not very strong it will be a uphill battle. But I love a challenge.

I pretty much base each chunk on what I feel like painting at the time. I also try to paint things that I have yet to paint. I would like to have at least one of each unit type and weapon type by the time I am done. So it has been pretty random to tell you the truth with little to no thought on tactics or strategy. But here is what I have so far.

1st 500pts (0-1 Hq restriction. Note due to a rule on the first 500pts I could have a Hq sentinel with out the actual command squad.)

TR 1: Infantry platoon
Command Squad - Bolt pistol, grenade launcher, flamer
Squad 1 - Vet. Sgt, flamer, Autocannon
Squad 2- Vet. Sgt, grenade launcher, Autocannon

TR 2: Armored Fist Squad
Squad- Vet Sgt, Melta gun (upgraded from flamer at 1000pts), heavy bolter

EL 1: Ratling Sniper Squad
5 ratlings

HQ: Sentinel Squadron
1 sentinel with autocannon

750pts

HQ: Command Platoon
5 man Command squad JO and flamer
1 sentinel with multilaser

HV 1: Leman Russ
Hull Heavy Bolter

1000pts

EL 2: Stormtroopers
5 man squad, veteran sgt, power weapon, 2 melta guns

HV 2: Leman Russ Demolisher
Hull Heavy Bolter

1250 (Work in progress)

3rd Infantry Squad in original platoon, Vet sgt, plasma gun, missile launcher (Painting Now)
1 sentinel for Hq Platoon with multi laser (On deck)
FA 1:Hellhound. (Done)

1500 (Am thinking this but not sure yet)

EL 3: 5 ogren
HV 3: basilisk with indirect fire (Or chimera for the Ogren and upgrading to bone head now as opposed to later)

That pretty much sums it up. I am looking forward to painting the Ogren but not looking forward to fielding them. However I am feeling confident that I can make them look good so they are here to stay but I might push them back and do them at 2000pts.

Hope this helps. There are also pics of each chuck but this list is better for details.

Once again thanks for your replies and support.

So another update.

Finished my Commissar. I was not going to use him in my army and was only planning on testing out a few of the washes on him. I have never painted with white primer before and wanted to give it a shot as well. I wanted to try some new things and I just got carried away and ended up finishing him. So I suppose waste not want not so I will use him as a Sgt. for my upcoming squad.

However he really put me behind schedule as he took MUCH longer then expected to finish. So he might become an actual Commissar (Even if their rules are worthless and expensive) and I might bump the Sentinel to another month if it looks like I will not be able to finish. Hope I don't have to but I really boned myself on this one.

I know he has some mistakes and a few things that I could have done better but I decided to abandon him for now and move on. I will go back and fill in the light parts of his jacket near his face later and clean up his base and add grass. I am pretty happy with him however and I really learned allot painting him. My wife says he is the best thing I have painted since she has known me. I am not sure if I agree but that made me feel good about it.

Commissar Front.

Looks great; the black leather is convincing. The only faults I can see are slightly orange-ish bits of... some sort of wash? In the belt holes, wrist, hand.. but the camera can see better than I can, and I don't think they'd be noticeable. My painting is no better, of course!

The eye, in its shadow, is also quite effective.

gerilla_93- Why is a figure that is wearing primarily black done in a white base coat? As I was experimenting with the washes, this being the main reason, I also wanted to use a few different shades of black as well. It is hard to get different shades of black with out wasting lots of time when I use black primer. It just kind of all fell together on this model.

Arctik_Firangi - As for the off color washes. Yes they are there but are unnoticeable on the model in person but will hope to fix that later. That strange color is Ogryn flesh if you cn believe that. I think it reacted strangely to the bronzed flesh I accidentally put on his hands as a base coat, colorblind is a bitch.

Also keep in mind that the picture made a guardsman the size of a bloodthirster so when shrunk some of the mistakes are unnoticeable. I keep wanting to paint the picture now as it would be so much easier than the actual fig.

Thanks for the responses fellas. In short he looks much better actual size then larger then life.

So got a lil more finished. The missile launcher base for my squad. It took a bit of time and has a few mistakes but I am prepared to live with them. I don't have much time left to finish this month so I have to make some time up. This is usually the fix the mistakes stage. So I can do that later. I hate to sacrifice quality as I can not fix that later without starting over so it was the most logical step to drop.

Will post more as they come. Next is batch painting 7 guardmen. I am not good at this and am not fast so I am crossing my fingers I can get them done on time. I have already decided that I will not have enough time for the Sentinel so it is getting bumped to another month. Unless I pull a miracle.

I am already sick of painting this month and it is getting harder to force myself to finish. AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Guess I could jump to the Turtle Pie threads for a good laugh. I deserve a F'ing break.

Running to the game store today to pick up some more paint and a brush. My white is crap and I just can't use it anymore. My small dry brush is dead as well. Need to resupply before the final push.

Rabbit_Hole - I have got better at eyes but for the rank and file guys I try to get it in one shot. If I mess up I just keep it that way. I will spend time on the other guys. Usually 1 in 10 have messed up eyes. I could fix them but in a sea of eyes few people notice. The best one is my navy guy. His eyes make him look crosseyed. Even better he has a flamer so it kind of works. Might be why he is adviser now and not flying anything any more.

Flachzange- Thanks man.

First off, HOLY CRAP awsome paint jobs!!!! for solid ammo weapons and flamers, ever consider drilling out barrels? Its a small detail that seems to add a lot of character to my models. Keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to seeing more pics of your stuff and the other gamers you play with.

Well I have decided to call it a night. I painted all day and night but was unable to finish the sentinel, let me tell you I gave it a hell of a shot. I was able to finish the guard squad however. In my mind it is the best of the rank and file squads in the army. A lot cleaner then the rest of my guardsman squads. I will post pictures after the PnP tomorrow. I will be heading into some tough games being 50pts short. Total of 55 short to be honest. Without the sentinel it might be very hard to win the painting side as well. However next month is Ogren time, so I am crossing my fingers , that I can snag the painting award.

Anyway I am bringing my camera tomorrow so I hope to get some shots of the opposition for you guys. Also thank you guys for being very supportive, it has kept me focused and on track. This month has been rough with the holidays and work. Great month just very busy and hard to find the time to paint. Well update tomorrow with pics.

Wish me luck...

Well this month is over. It was a kind of strange month for the paint and play. Only about half the players showed up. Many could not finish painting due to the extra time spent on the holidays. Some quit, some just skipped this month to take a break and others I'm sure had their reasons but will return in the next month or so. So that was strange. We had a new player join us! He is pretty new to the game of 40k. He is a very cool guy and his painting is very impressive. However I am getting ahead of myself. Well here is what happened.

Paint Judging.

Here are some of the entries for this month. (I missed some peoples and my own. Will post my months stuff later.)

Armored Company (1 of 2)

Black Templars (1 of 2) P.S. For some reason I got a terrible pic of the LR. My pic does it NO justice. Sorry Mark

Dark Angles (Raven Wing / Deathwing home made chapter)

Ultra Marines (4th company, I think )

Necrons

There were more but I forgot pictures of them or they appear later. I know you wanted the witch hunters pics , so did I, but he was a no show this month. Will get them later if I bump into him or if he makes it next time. I managed the last of 3 paint awards this month. So I cannot get anymore. It was my motivation for painting so hope I find new motivation. A few of the nicer painted armies were not there so I hope they return.

My Games.

GAME 1. IG vs Space Sharks. (Capture and control. One objective per player , spearhead)

So we meet again you silly little fish guys, remember last time where your dice abandoned you? I bet they do it again, boy was I right. WOW this guy has HORRIBLE dice. He failed so many saves I almost felt dirty...almost. If you recall I had a amazingly close game with this guy earlier in the paint and play! Remember how I said "I HATE TERMINATORS and I will put things in my army to deal with them!!!!" This was that guy. Anyway the game went like this. Pretty much every thing he had ran or drove right at me, screaming like the crazy fish men they are. Pretty much every thing he had died trying. It was beautiful. I was so happy till he reminded me what gave me head aches last game. TERMINATORS!!!! 3 of these jolly fellows and their gallant commander proceeded to walk past my entire army. I shot every thing at them. I even moved guys into rapid fire range. He just ignored my entire army and killed the squad on my objective. Of course the game went one more turn so he could do this and of course the game didn't go one more turn so I could get it back. So he Wins with around 5 marines on the table and me with most of my army. He never forgot the mission and never gave up. I tip my hat to him and this game was outstanding. A hard earned but deserved victory for him. It just doesn't get closer than that.

Some of his guys.

My deployment (The assault marine was the objective, we both had one )

IG LOSE
Space Sharks WIN

GAME 2: IG vs Necrons (Seize ground 4 objectives, spearhead)

This was a month of rematches. I played this guy last month and let me tell you that game was so close! It came down to a single die roll. Now I have to play him again? I got super lucky last time vs him. I didn't think my luck would hold vs his metal men this time. We both had 2 objectives in our deployment quarters. First tun he shoots his destroyers at a squad killing 3, I love going to ground with guard , and that was it. My first turn I killed all the destroyers and his wraiths. I thought hey this should be easy from this point on and for a while that is how it went. I killed his lord after he rezed himself, like last game and killed a few warriors. Getting close to phaze out. Everything was going my way, what could possibly go wrong? The monolith happened!!!!! It casually drove into my deployment zone and ,I'm not kidding you, killed more than half my army! I ran everything I had at him to kill a few more crons to make him phase out. I finally got it as the game went into turn 6. He got one more turn which would have had his monolith parked between both of my objectives, contesting both of them with the big sucker. Which would mean he holds 1 objective and I hold none! He however failed the one WWB roll he had to make that turn and he phased out. So the game came down to one die roll again!!! Just like last time 1 dice gives me victory instead of defeat, twice in 2 games! I will have a heart attack if I play him again. Fun game, great guy. The highlight of the game for me was running my ratlings toward his warriors all game in the attempt to get a shot at them. I finally do, after running pretty much across the board, and miss horribly. Then they get charged by a tomb spider who fails to wound them. They can't hurt the spider so TIE!! The spider kills one the following turn and I fail my, now, ld 4. We both roll a one for follow up! However I somehow thought ratlings had a 2 initiative so they were cut down. But they still held the damn thing up for 2 turns!!!

IG WIN
NECRONS LOSS

Necrons vs black templars

So that was this month.

WINS: 1
LOSS: 1 (Unbelievably my first one out of 8 games!)
PAINT AWARD: 1 (final one I can win)

So will leave you with a few more shots. My prediction is these two armies and the space sharks will be duking it out for best painted next month along with the witch hunters if he makes it back. However some people are speed painting and if they took their time could give them a run for their money.

Armored company 1250 pts. (My personal favorite army in the paint and play. Hand held shot, needed my tripod. Will get better pic next time.)

Black Templars 2 (This guy is new to the game if you can F'ing believe that! I love his stuff!)

Will post more as it comes. Will take a pic of my last painted squad here soon as well. 5 Ogren , 1 sentinel and a Basilisk next!!!! Stay tuned...

Wow! Thanks for the detailed update.

Some really nice armies there - that armoured company shot looks stunning with the smoke markers...

Your army looks the best out of what you've shown us, though your nemesis WitchHunters army must have been absent this time...

The Space Sharks and BTs look great. Someone bump Shuma, he's doing 'Sharks ATM.

Well got a little info on the fire bases. They are flickering tea lights. With cotton put around them. Glued at the bottom. Then dusted with one or 2 lights coats of spray adhesive. Dry. Then dust it with a light coat of back primer.

There are a few methods to achieve this look. I will ask what he did in particular.

Update: Started sanding the Ogryn. Gonna build the Basilisk tonight or tomorrow.

UPDATE:

I took a little break, felt I needed it. However I don't want to get into the spot I did last month so starting up already. So I have finished sanding and basing all the Ogryn. Except for 1, I need to order the one with the gun on the shoulder. Basilisk is built and ready to prime. Sentinel is primed and ready to be painted. It is in 9 separate pieces. Its the only way for me to paint them the way I want them. Gonna put magnets on it at some point as well. One Ogryn is primed and will begin painting here soon. Hopefully tonight. I am painting them all as specialish characters, so they will be done one at a time.

I will be using this as my slow painting month, as I have 2 painted Ogryn already (7 years old paint jobs.) and a sentinel already painted (bought painted 5 years ago). That I can use as a fall back plan if I cannot get it all painted in time. It is my JUST IN CASE plan. So would only have 4 models instead of 7 this month. Hope I don't have to do this but a light month sounds real nice about now.

Will post pictures of the completed figs as they come.

Also if anyone has pictures of converted rough riders, with out horses. Please post them here or post a link. I am thinking about making them but I don't like the idea of horses in my army.

Once again thanks for the support.

burb1996- The league is great for any store. It encourages painting to be sure but it also encourages people to buy stuff. You can try to pitch it this way.

It promotes a good amount of people to buy their armies in small chunks. It has people building entire new armies which means more money for the store. It creates more fully painted armies for RTT which promotes higher attendance at tournaments. It is a great way to bring new people into the hobby and helps create more regulars patrons to the store. People who are just shopping are more apt to show interest in the game when all models are painted. Also encourages increased paint sales. It pretty much works as a long tournament. Prizes help keep attendance up.

This league has been my personal favorite league / tournament that I have ever played to be honest. If the store continues to have these I will do every one. Yes that means I will be collecting various armies. I however am going to miss the fantasy one as they are overlapping.

The league was created by Mark Kyriss and he runs a tight ship. He runs most of our leagues and has always done a great job. I am not usually one for name dropping but he did such a great job on the rules and league he deserves to be credited if you use these rules. I was gonna just post a link but this seemed easier for everyone. I Probally should have posted this as my first post.

RULES

WARHAMMER 40k (5th Edition) PAINT AND PLAY LEAGUE
This league focuses on growing an army gradually and ensuring it is completely painted. Players start with small, expeditionary forces that will over time grow into a full-fledged army. This allows everyone to paint their army while playing league games with their painted pieces.
How the league works: Each League player starts with a small painted 40k army at the beginning of the league. Players will use a challenge system to play ‘league’ games. Challenges cannot be refused, although you may never play the same person more than once a month. League Victory Points are earned / lost. Every ensuing month, each player will add a set number of points of painted models to his army. This continues until everyone has a completely painted 2000 point 40k army. Unpainted and unbased models are not allowed — period.
The following guidelines for army choice: Pick any 40k army you would like to build. Ideally, players should start from scratch. If you’ve started an army, but not played it much, that’s okay.
Games and League Victory Points (LVP): Players may play as many battles as desired during a given month, however, only three battles per month per player will count towards LVPs. Players must decide beforehand whether a game is for fun or for LVPs.

Players receive LVPs based on the following scale:
Win: 3
Draw: 2
Loss: 1

LVPs outside of Battles:
· At the beginning of each month, players will vote for the best-painted addition to an army (they may not vote for their own). The owner will receive a bonus 3 LVPs to be added to his total. No player can win this award more than 3 times.
· Any player may spend 1 LVP to restructure a specific unit (reduce size, remove wargear/ dedicated transport/weapons/psychic powers, etc). Only 2 LVP per month may be spent this way.
· A player may spend 3 LVP to remove a character (not the HQ Commander) or a unit completely. A second unit/character removed costs 6 LVP, a third 9 LVP. This resets each month.
· The player with the lowest Monthly LVP from the previous month may drop one unit for free.
LVPs gained or lost in these categories go into Overall rankings but not Monthly.

Rankings:
LVPs are kept in two categories: Monthly and Overall. Overall LVP are kept over the course of the league. In the end, the player with the most Overall LVP is the winner.
A monthly ranking of LVP is also kept, but is only used for a free army modification (see above).
The First Month—Recon Patrol: The first month, League players will build 500 point armies using the following restrictions:
No model may have more than two wounds, no model may have a 2+ or better armor save, no vehicle may have better than 33 points total armor (Front+Side+Rear values), no Special Characters may be taken, no Ordnance weapons may be taken.
First month games will be played on a 4'x4' table. After the first month, players are free from these restrictions.
Second and Successive Months: Players must take their 500 pt armies and increase them to 750 points; each successive month after they will add 250 more points (see chart below). All armies must meet minimum and maximum limits for a Standard Force Organization listed in the chart below.
NOTE: Particular armies with special composition requirements that would force a change to the comp table will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
Every month players will play three standard 40k battles (one each of the three standard objective scenarios, but players will randomly determine deployment zones). Above 1500 points the league organizer may drop the number of games to two if time becomes an issue.
At each 250 block addition, players may:
· Buy new units of any type allowed (per the chart below)
· Increase unit size (ex. five marines to 10 marines)
· Add unit / vehicle upgrades / wargear / psychic powers / dedicated transports / heavy weapons / etc.
· Remove basic character upgrades to upgrade with wargear/improved weapons/etc. (dropping a standard pistol in favor of a plasma pistol or master-crafted weapon, for example)
At each 250 block addition, players may not:
· Remove units or reduce unit size
· Remove wargear, psychic powers or special skills / characteristics (Exarch or Daemonic powers, etc) (although paid-for items can be moved between characters)
· Remove vehicles or mounts

Sha1emade, this P&P thread of yours is what I come to Dakka Dakka for. Your skill is obvious, and your army looks great. You are pushing yourself to get better, but more than that, you are telling the story of what it is to be in an active, healthy, and real FLGS community.

This is the part of our hobby that makes memories that last our whole lives. So I wanted to thank you for being diligent and open in sharing your work and your tourney experiences.

The rules post above is the icing on the cake. I'm gonna take this to MY FLGS and get a P&P tourney going!

Cheers!

Slaaneshi and burb1996 - I must say that I am honored by your kind words. They meant allot to me. It feels good that what I am doing can be helpful to others. I really enjoy doing this and it is reassuring that others enjoy reading it, for one reason or another. So thank you!! If your FLGS decides to have a paint and play please feel free to hijack this thread and post your pics and experiences. Or create your own. But please leave a link here so we can all follow along. Good luck!

NEXT UP: My friend with the deadly Blood Angles is coming over tomorrow to play a game vs my guard. My prediction....BIG LOSS for me. So to change things up a bit, I am going to attempt a detailed battle report of me getting stomped into the ground, as I will be testing my 1500pt force. My friend has agreed to help with this little battle report. I will be posting pictures and a (hopefully) round by round commentary. IF the game happens I will post this report, complete with pictures, tomorrow or the day after.

NEWS: I decided to spring for a new light kit for my camera. One of my jobs is as a photographer so I will want to be testing them here soon. First on the battle report and second on some mini's from my other armies. Am curious to see what people think of them. So with in the next week or so I will do a little show and tell. If I can find the time all of these things will happen soon. If not they will appear as time goes on.

Ok as promised...The battle report between the BA and the Imp Guard.

This will be shortish as it its late and I forgot about a Apocalypse game tomorrow. I hope to take some pics of that as well for posting. However I still have to build my army and it is 2 am so this will the be short version. I wanna post this fast and while it is still fresh and not after the game tommorrow so we get the short version.

Back story....

So my buddy wanted to play a game. He is the one that plays the nasty BA army. He is a good player and his army is very well balanced and fast. My guard have been stomped by this army EVERY time. My DA and Necrons have both defeated his army. However to my knowledge those are his only losses. So uphill battle. I love a challenge and he is fun to play so we got the ball rolling.

Turn 1.

We rolled and got the capture and control - pitched battle 1500pts. We set the table to be fair and I won first turn. He has always had first turn vs my guard in the past, so I hoped this would be my key to victory. We both set up and he decided not to try to seize the initiative.

My set up.

His set up.

His wedge of death

So my first turn started off NICE!!!! I did my scout move with my sentinels and then moved them to get a side armor shot on his vindicator. Everything missed but one auto cannon shot. Rolled a 6 to pen.....a 6 to blast the punk right off the map!!! However as his vindicator is usually overflowing with killy it refused to go without killing anything. So in the explosion, much to my friends dismay, 2 assault marines hiding behind it went splat....skipping a head a touch in the game , the marines failed their leadership and promptly fled off the board.

The rest of that turn and the following turns of shooting can be summed up in one sentence. I STUNNED A RHINO and killed AN ATTACK BIKE with my last 2 shots!!!!. Yup all I could do. Dig the smoke on the Rhino?
Too.......cute......to kill.....aaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!

Anyway getting late and gotta wrap up. So the marines get closer....

They killed only 2 squads before I killed nearly all of them. 2 turns of shooting and he had 5 models left on the board. We was stunned and more then a little upset. However he stuck with it and wanted to take as many of my stuff as he could with him. Yeah he pretty much ate everything. I had no scoring troops on my objective. I shot his marines on his objective and they fell back 10 inches. Wouldn't ya know it the game went another turn. Story of my Guard. So the game ended with him scoring one and me zero. BA are just nuts vs guard. Just too fast! Fun game and revenge will be mine...if I use my DA.

ADL HIGHLIGHTS: Ogryn killed a 5 man tac squad and took a full volly from the crusader and lost 2 guys. Sentinels were MVP of the game. Killing a vindicator, predator and the assault squad that ran off the board. Soaked up a good amount of fire power as well. Jump pack chaplain pretty much ate half my army. 3 squads dead from him.

Was a fun game played in my game room. Sorry the pics were terrible, I set the camera wrong and was more into playing then pics. Sorry as well for the short battle report. But its late and I need to build my list for tomorrow. So I can post a few from that battle. Hope I wake up....

Nice and quick batrep!

May I suggest either some vets with meltas or lots of plasma guns? Both are good anti-MEQ units, and considering the amount of armour your firend is running, they'll always be able to shoot something interesting.

and a anti tank support squad with lascanons can work out great too.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I can't take vets at this stage in the Paint and Play as I have all my elites filled. I am not to worried about it however. This army was never made to be competitive. For me it needs to have the widest range of models possible so I can be prepared for the new dex. Plus I am a sucker for having, and playing, one of everything. I will have a anti tank squad with 3 lascannons in 2000pts, I think.

I also did quite respectable against him this time actually. He only had 5 models left and he thought he lost after turn 4. If my army is designed around anything, it is the ability to throw a ton of wounds at an opponent, forcing them to need good dice to beat me, as few of these are AP weapons. However what I have noticed is that it works pretty damned good vs MEC.

I will be making the list actually competitive after the new dex comes out. Being able to win games with it is secondary to having a large range of models painted and ready. Besides , in all fights I am the big underdog and it requires me to play at the very top of my game, if I want a chance to win. I love a challenge and makes me feel better about the victories that I get.

Thanks for the tips and I agree completely with them, just the weak list was actually made on porupose. I know pretty silly huh...

Good Battle Report, Unfortunate that you didn't win but it sounded like a fun day.

You definitely win the best painted award though.

UPDATE: Sisters player was out of town last month but he will be back next month. So I will get pictures of his beautiful models then. He is happy to let me take the pictures so good chance we will see his stuff next month.

So we played a Apoaplypse game at the game shoppe in Omaha, what I conciser to be my FLGS. I live an hour away but I go as often as I can. They also host the paint and play so many of the same players were in the Apoc game. We had 8 players per side, 2k per person, for a total of 32000 points give or take.

We had some great moments, as always in large games, and a great time. One player made pasta for the entire group. Yes, people are THAT cool at the Game Shoppe. The game featured a ton of Apoc formations and forgeworld models. I played my deathwing. 60+ termies were on the board, between all forces, good and evil. I was nominated as the team captain of the good side. Not sure why but I always seem to be the captain in the Apoc games. It is fun but you tend to get pulled in quite a few directions all at once. Still I always enjoy it ,so I'm happy to do it.

Here is a showcase of some of the units that appeared in the game and a few pics of the game itself. I was way to busy to take many pics during the game and to concentrate on a real battle report. So with out further delay...

Thunderbolt and stuff (Painted and owned by the Sisters player

Models by the Armored company player. (His stuff is just cool and inventive. He always has cool stuff.)

Some cool ork stuff. Including Orkamus Prime. (Converted battle wagon Semi)

Deathwing (Not mine)

Drop Pod Marines (In game shot)

Necrons (YES the guy who I always have a close game with)

My Deathwing (Made about 6-8 years or more ago.)

The board

Summary. Very close fight. Actually very tatical. Good game with all types of insanity. The good side lost by....you guessed it one die roll. A pen hit on a shadowsword blew it up causing the evil side to win. If he didn't roll a 5 or 6 then we had won the game. I don't know what it is with me, that it always seems to come down to one simple roll of the dice. We will get the savages next time!!!!!

Anyway I will leave you with a WIP of my ogryn. I am about half way finished with the skin. Everything else just has its base coat on. They are gonna take me forever. They are just so cool that I don't mind. So please be patient with me this month on new model pics.

UPCOMING: Will take some pics of my crons. Will shoot a pic of my last painted guard squad that I seem to keep forget doing. Shots of my DA. Anything else I finish with the guard. My old school 1/2 finished warhound. Shot of my bane blade. Anthing else hobby related that I get to...Stay tuned.

OK. So I've just caught up with this whole thread and have spent quite while reading through it. Sha1emade, I must say that your IG models are just seriously impressive! There is a simple clarity in your work that most people, myself included, strive for. They look exactly like the sort of work that could easily grace the epic photos that are in White Dwarf.

Gushing aside, I'm also enjoying the unfolding story of the league and am impressed by the concept of the league. Any chance of letting us know how it's working so far from a points point of view? Where are you in the league? Who's in front/below? etc.

Keep up the blog! And painting! Dammit man, just keep on going!

InyokaMadoda- Wow you really know how to make a person feel pretty damn good about what they are doing. Thank you for the gracious complements. They are very much appreciated.

In answer to your question about how the league is going. Things are going pretty smooth. Last month had the smallest attendance so far. We expect better numbers next month. I am pretty sure at least 3 more are expected to return, after missing last month. As for the standings...

At the end of the fourth month (1250 pts), the standings:

1. Sha1emade (IG) - 29 pts (3d and final paint win!)
2. Sam (Ultramarines) - 22 pts
3. Bill (BA) - 18 pts
4. Mark* (BT) - 17 pts
5. James ** (Necrons) -16 pts
6. Jon ** (Spacesharks) and Dave (BA) - 15 pts
7. Gavin (Armored Company), Luke (Raven Wing / Death Wing) and Mark * (WH - Sisters) - 12 pts
8. Nick (SM), and Steve (Tau) - 8 pts
9. Jose (Chaos Daemons) - 7 pts
10. Joe * (Tau) - 6 pts
11. Matt (Orks), Jordan (CSM), Kyle (2nd Armored company) - 5 pts
12. Spencer * (CSM), Jason (DA), Tim (SM) - 4 pts
13. Mike (BT) - 3 pts
14. Chris (Necrons), and Kyle (Orks) - 2 pts

* - Asterisks indicate that I have played that army ,one game per asterisk, in the paint and play. All have a small battle report written about how the game went further back in thread. Bill in 3rd is the BA player from the last battle report.

I am currently...

WIN - 5
DRAW - 2
LOSS - 1
PAINT WINS - 3 of 3

Sam in second has...

WIN- 7
DRAW-0
LOSS- 1

Bll in third has... He also missed last month.

WIN - 6
DRAW - 0
LOSS - 0

Missing games do not count as losses. Just no points. Can be hard to make it to all the games. However it is part of the league. Sometimes just showing up makes a big deal. However it is hard and a good chance everyone might miss one month for various reasons so it evens out.

Well that pretty much sums it up. Thank your all for your interest and I hope to post more pics in a few days. Work is gonna possibly stop my painting for a few days.

Congrats on the 3rd paint win! I'll join in on agreeing that all three were well deserved. As Inyoka said, your models have a clarity and crispness that most painters strive for (and quite frequently fail to achieve; myself included.) To be able to achieve that, while working to a continuing schedule, is impressive and deserves the commendation.

Thank you all for your replies and praise. You have no idea how helpful that is for motivation. I take each and every post seriously and am thankful for them all, praise, constructive criticism, questions, suggestions, ideas, likes, dislikes and even humor. In short I am glad for all the posts.

14th Cadian- Yes ,I do believe they are from Plastruct. I tossed the wrapping a while ago, so I can't be 100 per cent sure. They make easy and convincing bases. My Ogryn have 2 different types combined into one base. I hope they achieve the effect I am going for.

With work and the wife being pretty sick it has been tough to do any painting lately. I am however excited to get back to work. So hopefully I can finish something soon.

UPDATE: 75% sure I will be doing a Fantasy Paint and play as well. I have never played the game but will give it a shot if time permits.

QUESTION FOR DAKKA- Should I just combine the fantasy and 40k on this thread or start a new one? They will overlap a bit so I was thinking just using this as my all purpose GW thread. What do you think?

Arctik_Firangi- Good point. However most all the stuff is related to the paint and play. Most of the pics are from the league. The Apoc game had mostly players from the league so that only kinda counts.

As for the painting... I have had to do some reconfiguring. I am joining a Fantasy Paint and play at the same store with similar rules. Problem I am facing is getting 2 armies painted to the quality that I want. I have won all the painting scores that I can from the 40k league. I have a lot to paint for the first 500pts of fantasy and they two leagues overlap. Which has forced a decision. In order to do both leagues I need to use stuff that I have painted already for the 40k league, years ago, and use that for my 40k stuff for 2 of the last 3 months. Allowing me to concentrate on the first month of fantasy. My second month of fantasy has only 5 figs so I can split painting fantasy/40k stuff on the last month of the 40k league. Not to mention it will allow me to view the codex and use it before the first RTT that falls one month after the 40k league. So I can tailor my painting to what I want to use as opposed to guessing.

With that being said. I have been reading up on fantasy, as I have never played it till now, and assembling the army. I will begin painting very shortly for fantasy. I will be using this post for all the pictures, as it is a paint and play thread. So the post will be split between 40k and fantasy paint and play. After that I will start a new thread or just rename the thread. I have chosen my army and have ironed out most of the details and have all the stuff I need till 1250 points. So next step is to base and spray them. I will be returning to the Ogryn time permitting. I hope to have them fully painted and show up in my 2000pt chuck.

I hope this all turns out and that I am not taking too much on. This has been the cause of my absence from this thread, pulling my hair out trying to decide if I want to do both. I have been spending a good portion of time learning the game. I really like my army and hope I can do it justice with my painting. I should be posting more now that I have worked out what is happening. So thanks for your support and pressure to keep me painting. Hope to have some pictures up of the fantasy or the Ogryn. Which ever I finish first.

Glad you could join us!!!!! I have to say that my painting is not as good as the GW staff stuff. Thanks for the compliment but I'm not that good yet.

Update: Almost finished my first model for fantasy. A horse. The rider I hope to finish tonight or tomorrow so pics to come. I have never painted a horse or fantasy stuff so will be curious to see what people think. The 1500pt paint and play for 40k is this Sunday. I will post pictures of the new models that were painted and the battle reports. Sorry been spending a lot of time on the fantasy stuff. I will continue to post 40k stuff as well. The fantasy stuff will take me a LOT longer to paint then 40k stuff. So it will be slow going. However I have chosen fantasy to be my show case army. I will not be rushing the stuff. I just love the models I am painting so I will try to paint each model to the best of my ability. Each model and steed, if they have one, will be painted seperatly and no batch painting. I have modeled my army so there are no two like models. If that dosen't make my brain explode, I don't know what will.

Well it is time for more pictures. I finished this guy tonight. It took me the better part of 3 days to do. This will pose a problem for the Paint and Play. It just takes too long to paint the models. It will be impossible for me to finish on time. What I might do is keep painting them to this level and just base coat a few colors on the other models so that I can play, I know this is lame but I don't want to compromise quality for speed anymore. I had to do this with my guard and was not satisfied with some stuff. That is also why I won't do my Ogryn for the Paint and Play. I want them to be the best I can make them.

Under the gun is not how I will produce the best results. I don't want to rush this army. I love all the models except for the marauder's. I like the horses but the marauders I am not a fan of. It takes a lot of effort for me to not make them look cartoony. If ya haven't guessed it. I am running Warriors of Chaos in the Paint and Play.

Well what do you think? I think I did ok, given it was my first horse and first fantasy figure. I can't seem to take a good picture of this model. It looks much better to me in person then in the picture. But I am tired and don't want to try and figure out what I am doing wrong photography wise.

Hope you like it.

UPDATE: I will be posting the rules and dates for the Fantasy paint and play in the next few days. Will also post any other figs I get done. The Marauder Horseman really burned me out so will try another model just to keep things fresh. As usual I will also be taking pics and battle reps of the games this sunday. As well as with the Fantasy side but that doesn't happen till the first of next month.

No problem. Just to give you the heads up it took a very very long time for me to get this effect. However if you skip every other step you could get fast and effective results. 50 horses!!! My brain would explode!!!! Well here is the steps I used to paint the horse. Hope this helps.

Marauder Horse

Leather 1. Scorched brown Basecoat
2. Badab Black wash
3. 50/50 Scorched brown and dark flesh base - Watered down, painting over 3/4 of base coat leaving shadowed areas.
4. Dark flesh base coat. Like a giant highlight.
5. 50/50 mix dark flesh and snakebite leather for solid highlight.
6. Snake bite leather , watered down , hitting only raised areas as an extream highlight. Broken lines not solid.

Grey horse 1. Base coat with Astronomicon gray
2. Wash with badab black
3. Paint everything but recesses with codex grey
4. 50/50 mix codex gray and fortress gray for thick highlight, then blend it down a bit
5. 25/75 mix codex gray and fortress gray for thin highlight, then blend it down a bit
6. Fortress gray, watered down for extream highlight

steel 1. Black basecoat
2. Boltgun metal
3. Wash badab black
4. Touch newer metal and edges with chainmail

Black Saddle 1. Black base coat
2. Chaos black 1 part 3 parts Rotting flesh thick highlight
3. Add rotting flesh to the mix about 1:1, extream broken highlight

Fur 1. Base coat black
2. Grave yard earth base coat
3. 50/50 mix grave yard earth and bubonic brown
4. Bubonic brown, watered down extream highlight, broken lines

Base, Mud 1. Black base coat
2. Scorched brown, heavy wet brush, thick
3. Graveyard earth, medium coat, thick
4. Bubonic brown drybrush first coat
5. Bubonic brown dusting

Base, Rock 1. Codex grey base coat
2. Devlin Mud wash
3. Codex grey dry brush
4. Codex grey dry brush, dusting

Grass 1. GW Scorched grass

****** Sorry for any spelling or gramatical mistakes. Its late and I'm tired as hell. **********

Hope this helps. Please post a pic of you first horse so we can see how it looks.

**Edit** Forgot a step in the grey horse area. Added the forgotten step, like I said tired.

Stretch−I hear ya. I hate walking away from a project that is half done. I love that project. However is is just postponed for a bit. When the new dex comes out and fantasy has ran a few months it will be time to bust out the guard again. As a few months in fantasy I have 5 or less models to paint. So they will be back.

InyokaMadoda- It seemed like the best road to take but ya never know. I think I have made the right decision.

So here are the rules for the Fantasy Paint and Play.

FANTASY PAINT AND PLAY RULES

2009 WARHAMMER FANTASY PAINT AND PLAY LEAGUE
This league is focused on two things: growing an army gradually over time and ensuring that each army is completely painted. We’ll start with small, expeditionary forces that will over time grow into full-fledged armies. This allows everyone to paint their army over time while playing league games with their painted pieces. This is perfect for people who want to become involved in Fantasy or are interested in doing another painted fantasy army in a fun and structured environment.
How the league will work:
Each participant in the league will have a painted 500 point army at the beginning of the league. Each month, players can challenge any other players in the league to play a ‘league’ game. Challenges cannot be refused, although they may be delayed based on timing. League Victory Points will be earned/lost (details below). Every ensuing month, each player will add 250 points of painted models to his army. This will continue monthly, until everyone has a completely painted 2000 point fantasy army. This means the league will last 6 months after the first (see schedule below). Unpainted and unbased models are not allowed — period. You are welcome to play games at a points disadvantage if certain models are not completed in time, or if you wish to “bank” points for your next months builds.
The following guidelines for army choice:
Pick any Fantasy army you would like to build. Start from scratch. If you have started an army, but not played it much, it’s ok, or this is an opportunity to finish that unpainted army you’ve had for years.
The following guidelines for army selection:
The initial armies will be 500 points. In those 500 points, players must select a single Hero and spend his/her remaining points on Core choices. Note that the character selected will remain the army general, regardless of other factors until a higher LD hero joins the army. Any character not allowed by army book rules to be a general is not available at this stage.
At each 250 block addition, players may:
· Buy a new unit with the appropriate hero/core/special/rare slot
· Increase unit size (ex. 16 spearmen to 20 spearmen)
· Add command to any unit or add unit upgrades
· Add magic items/upgrades to units and characters
· Remove basic character upgrades (dropping heavy armor to buy magic armor, for example)
· Upgrade a hero to a BSB, add a level to an existing mage
· At the 2000 point level, a hero may be upgraded to a similar type Lord or a lord purchased separately
At each 250 block addition, players may not:
· Remove units, command, or reduce unit size
· Remove magic items (although magic items can be moved between characters)
· Remove monstrous mounts
Unused points may be saved and applied in the next month.
Hero/Core/Special/Rare slots are broken down like this:
Core: Special: Rare: Characters: Lords: Due date
500 1+ 0 0 1 0 1 Mar
750 2+ 1 0 1 0 26 Apr
1000 2+ 1 0 2 0 31 May
1250 2+ 2 0 2 0 21 Jun
1500 2+ 2 1 3 0 19 Jul
1750 2+ 3 1 3 0 23 Aug
2000 3+ 4 2 4 1 20 Sep
Note: These dates are for planning and are subject to change due to tournaments, etc. Every effort will be made to stick to this, though.

Army Specific Notes:
Armies that are not quite “approved” but are in the back of Army Books as options are encouraged and allowed—this is an opportunity for players to experiment with them as well!
Any composition changes that are a result of special rules for a Lord or Hero not available at a lower points level are allowed (assuming your final roster has these characters!) as if the character were available (it is assumed the lower points army is a detachment of his main army.
Bretonnia: The paladin BSB requirement is waived until the armies reach 1000 points, when a BSB must be selected. The fifth character may not be added until after the BSB is added.
Dark Elves: DE assassins cannot be selected as the initial hero (esp since they are no longer a Hero choice!)
Dogs of War: The player chooses a general as normal who counts as the paymaster as well until the armies reach 1000 points, when a paymaster must be purchased. DoW may be taken as a Rare choice in other armies if allowed in their Army books.
Dwarves: May add runes to existing items as the league progresses. For example, a dwarf thane with a Rune of Cleaving axe may add a Master Rune of Swiftness to the same weapon later in the league.
High Elves: May modify their Special/Rare choice availability at or after 1500 pts.
Tomb Kings: Because Khemri requires two heroes, the player must choose either a lich priest or a tomb prince as the initial hero. Regardless, this hero counts as both the general and hierophant. Once 1000 points is reached, the player is required to purchase whichever type of hero he does not already have and the rules revert to normal.
Orcs & Goblins: Big’uns are unit upgrades not available until armies reach 500+ points.
Skaven: A Warlock may not be upgraded to Grey Seer status. In addition, a Skaven Assassin cannot be selected as the initial hero.
If over the course of the campaign a new army book is released then the player must update their army to the new rules. Considering the amount of effort potentially involved in this task, we’ll be flexible with the player(s) and try to arbitrate the transition as fairly as possible when/if the time comes.

League Victory Points (LVP):
Overall LVP are kept over the course of the league. In the end, the player with the most overall LVP is the winner.
LVPs are kept in 2 categories: Monthly and Overall.
Players are encouraged to play as many battles as possible during a given league month. Only two battles per month (per player) counts towards LVPs. Players must decide before the game whether the game is a fun, practice game or a league game that will count towards LVPs.
Players receive LVPs based on the following scale:
Win: 3
Draw: 2
Loss: 1
LVPs outside of Battles:
Painting Bonus:
Each month (on the due date) players will vote for the best-painted addition to an army. The winner will receive an additional 3 LVPs to be added to his total. No one player can win this award more than 3 times.
Penalties:
--Any player may spend 1 LVP to restructure a specific unit (reduce size, remove banner, remove command). Only 2 LVP per month may be spent this way.
--A player may spend 3 LVP to remove a character (not the general) or a unit completely. A 2nd unit/char removed that month costs 6 LVP, the 3rd costs 9 LVP. This progression resets each month.
--In addition, the player(s) with the lowest total LVP from the previous month may drop one unit for free if they wish.
LVPs gained or lost as above go into Overall rankings but not Monthly.

Monthly ranking of LVP is also kept. Each month, the player with the most LVP for that month will receive a bonus of either: a) two free rerolls in their next league game, or, b) a –1LVP penalty to any one reorganization cost for the next month awarded by the League Organizer.

It is possible for an army to never win any month but win overall. Some armies are stronger at different stages but this tends to even out over the course of the league. Remember—the goal is to end with a fully painted, competitive army. Plan the final army you want first, and work your increments up to achieving that, and you’ll do well!

So as promised. My next model finished. The Marauder and the dog are test models and I will be using this scheme for the rest of the Horsemen and dogs. Hope you like it. Both models are actually kind of rough for me. I am satisfied with how they turned out but depressed about how long it will take to finish the army. Ah well. I keep asking myself am I going overboard, paint wise, on such a cheap unit. 5 dogs cost 30pts!!!!!

Anyway hope you like it. This Sunday is the 1500pt 40k paint and play. Will try to get more painting done this weekend. It will be pretty busy so I will be lucky to do some basing and spraying.

Looks good to me. I'm sure you'll speed up after you've done a few of them. And you can always use the factory line approach. You can still maintain quality, plus the bonus feature is that, if you don't actually finish the models, you may well have reached the point where they count as painted (3 colours on) and can still be used in your games, leaving you time to finish at you leisure (?).

I'm not sure that all makes sense, but I'm sure you'll work it out....

WOW. This thread was well worth my time.

You have inspired me to kick myself into high gear. Especially after reading all this great content. Much better than the staged crap they put in White Dwarf. I love the league build. I've been looking into something like this to do with my mates and this looks just about perfect. I've put the rules on a word document and sent it to a good friend at my flgs for consideration.

Your army completion/paint quality ratio is phenomenal. You are a prime example of what this game is all about and how it should be played.

From an artistic standpoint, I see you as extremely competent. The fact that your army looks as stellar as it does even with your colorblindness is outstanding. (btw, please forgive me if I'm overreaching, but what type of color blindness do you suffer from? My friend has a protanopia so he plays smurfs.)

Thank you good sir and good hunting!

Before we begin. Thank you all for you generous and kind responses. I appreciate you taking your time to respond and for following this thread. I am glad to hear that you like it. As such if you want to see anything I am forgetting please let me know. Aunshova- thank you. Your post has inspired me to work harder!!

1500pts round completed! So it is time again to report on how things went for the 40k Paint and Play. To start out with the attendance picked back up from last month. We had a few players that had missed a month return to the fight. There were also some fun and strange battles that happened. As well as in the first round every fight, but one, was a challange. I guess some people needed to settle some scores. There was some great painting done this month and more termies and land raiders graced the tables, much to my pain. The mood was good and it was one of the more fun months for everyone. My friend's (Imp Fist) girlfriend brought the players cookies!! We love her! So with out further delay the details.

Paint Judging. (I was not involved but did get a vote.)

Here are some of the entries for this month.

Armored Company (My favorite army in the League.)

Necrons (The guy that I keep getting lucky aginst. )

Black Templars (Sorry for the blurry pic. I must have bumped the camera. They looked really good!)

Blood Angles (From the earlier battle report and my Best Friend.)

Space Sharks (With Fricking Laser beams attached to their heads. )

Ultra Marines (Apparently not capable of losing a game. In a strong 2nd place.)

Imperial Fists (One of my best buddies and a great - smart player.)

There were more entries but they were a bit late and will be shown later in the post. The mysterious Witch Hunters player won the paint award this month, big surprise! I will be showcasing his stuff at the end of this post so keep reading and you will be in for a treat.

My Games.

GAME 1: IG vs The Black Templars (THE ONLY NON CHALLENGE GAME IN THE FIRST ROUND)

So this game requires a little bit of introduction. A while back we had a looky lou when we did the last apoc mega battle (earlier in the thread). He really enjoyed the battle and was starting a Black Templars army. He had a few unpainted figs at the time. I had lent him some stuff to play with as well as some other people and helped with the rules. He was very smart and picked up on it really fast. We invited him to play in the paint and play, even if it was more then the mid point. I was very happy when he showed up. He was 500pts short but had painted 1000pts up in a short time. We asked Marc, league master, if he could jump in. We bumped his points up, in the condition that it would be finished by next month. We were the only 2 people not challenged so we faced each other.

The game was objectives with a 12" deployment zone. I set up spread out across my entire zone and tried to maximize my fire power. He set up in the middle hoping to reach the soft center of the battle line. I have learned it only takes 4 to 6 marines in the IG backfield to win a game so I looked to stop only that. Having played the templars before and learning a very very hard lesion, I decided to only shoot at one thing till it was dead.

Being a newer player we discussed tactics and manovering for most of the game. I don't need to tell anyone that a foot slogging army has a rough time with a IG gun line. He was shot up pretty good but never gave up. He hit my line with a land raider and some termies! That would have hurt big time but a small difficult terrain roll kept him from charging. He was then in charge range of most of my good stuff. A good multi charge would end my day. However due to the failed difficult terrain roll and some good rolling on my shooting he had 3 termies left. They were promptly circled by my ratlings who would ensure he could only charge them and I would get another guard volley off before he could killing anything else. We decided to call it as I had too many objectives for him to clear me off of.

He was a good opponent and a great guy. He took the loss well and was more interested in how to improve his army and tactics then winning. I will make the prediction, if his attitude remains the same, that in a few years he will be gobbling up Rouge trader wins and will be the guy to beat.

2nd Turn of the game.

IG Win
BT Loss

GAME 2: IG vs Armored company (I was challenged!)

This fight was long in the making. I had wanted to play him since the league started. However be both agreed that we would wait till later in the league to have the game. As we both thought it would be more even later and too see so many guard tanks on the table would be fun. We couldn't decide who the heretic was so we opted for a advanced form of guard paint ball. The fight started out with him reciting the Litany of Accuracy.

I laughed at this. Luck is something you make, right? Well apparently it actually worked as his dice were AMAZING!!

We played a multi objective mission with 12" Deployment zones. It was nothing short of intimidating looking at all of those cannons pointed at my weedy guardsmen. I had a feeling this is what the true meaning of attrition was going to feel like. He had first turn and moved everything 6" at me at blotted out the sun with shells. He did quite a bit of damage but not much was killed due to most of my units being behind cover, cowardly perhaps. The game pretty much went on like this for the entire game. I managed to knock a turret off of one russ but that was all I could do. He rained fire and death on me the whole game. At the end I managed to move a few units out from the wreckage of my tanks and went to ground in the hopes that I would survive the hell. He raced tanks at me and played bumper tanks with my remaining vehicles hoping to park on the objectives. The game ended before he could do this to all the objectives. I had one objective at the end with 4 guys from 3 different squads hugging the objective and praying the the emperor! With no troops in a Armored Company he couldn't claim only deny. I managed a win but felt like a shallow victory. He had destroyed most of my army. I blew off one gun and that was it!!! There was little manovering on my part so I didn't feel I out played him. It was simply power vs numbers and this time numbers one. Still the game was very fun and it looked cool as well. Next time I think I want to team up with him and fight some orks!! Tell me that wouldn't be great!

Pic of the begining of the battle.

Another reason I love his army. Check out this reference to Big Trouble in Little China!!!

And this from mystery space theater 3000!!!

IG Win
AC Loss

So other cool things that happened.

Blood Angles Vs Armored Company. (Yes all the tanks died! WOW!)

New Black Templars (Vs Eldar)

Imperial Fists Termies (Bases styled after my Ogryn Bases)

Space Sharks Vindicator

Well now the moment you have all been waiting for a spot light on this months and 2 time winner of the painting award. The Witch Hunters. I will just let the pics to the talking enjoy.

He was in a hurry and I needed to start my game so the pics are a bit rushed. But I think you get the idea. I hope to play him one more time in the league.

Things to come...

Will be working on fantasy this month. After that hope to be able to paint some guard and fantasy. A split month. I make no promises here but that is what I would like to see happen. Will post pics of anything I finish. Any way hope you enjoy this months report. As always feel free to comment and ask questions.

I will try to post as often as I can. I might toss in a few pics of my Dark Angels just for fun. They have been my main army for about 10 years. As for paint quality they are not in league with the guard. I had a little quantum leap in paint ability between the armies. Might post some necron stuff as well. Just to keep the balance between 40k and fantasy. Is this worth doing or should I just stay on topic and post when I have real Paint and Play updates?

So I cam to thread quite late and I have to say, the work that has gone on at the store you play at is nothing short of amazing. Truly....my hat goes off to everyone that plays there. i am near/next to 3 different Games Workshop stores AND 1 LGS and none of them have that many competent painters. It is very inspiring to see all of that come together and inspires me to go my closest GW store and see if we can't start up a Play N Paint League.

Soon enough, Ill have finished picks of my Imperial Fists up here. The tanks you guys saw earlier (I'm one of Sha1emade's good friends, and involved in the PnP) are just the minimum 3 colors. I've done quite a bit to them. Also, I think I'm going to change my Terminator bases (too, not terminator'ish). I'm pretty stoked though, I'm bringing Phoenix (using Kantor rules) and Lysander in this next 250 points (Phoenix is replacing the current commander). Woot Woot!!!

I am currently working on my juggernaut. I am mixed at this stage about it. I am unsure if I love it or hate it. I have started over about 5 times so far. I think I am too far to restart. I hope to have him done tonight or tomorrow night. Will post pics when I find some time.

Harkanos: YES please post your new work. I hope to see them in person here soon. But I would love for you to share with us all.

Sorry it has been so long. I have been painting up a storm and have been more than a little busy with my normal life. The Warhammer Fantasy 500pts starts tomorrow, and I will be returning with the usual pictures. They will be Sunday night or Monday.

I have a good amount done. Not where I would like but as I said, I want everything to look good. Bouncing between 2 paint and plays has been rough. Not to mention trying to learn the game. My friend Bill and I have played some games to help me with the rules. I think I can play now with out too many stupid moments, hopefully anyway. I am excited for tomorrow. However I am not even close to finished. I will have my basic 3 colors on the models but it is a pretty lame way to start the PnP. It is not my style. I much prefer to have everything fully painted. However it just started too soon, and during the 40k paint and play, so it really is the best I could do. I am happy with what I have done. However the photos leave something to be desired. I had to do them quick as today is a very busy day for me. Well hope you like them.

My 85% finished warhounds.

My 95% Finished BSB (Battle Standard Bearer.)

The pictures don't do him much justice but at least I got them shot. Will post more in the next few days to show how the first 500pt league day went.

First I want to begin by saying sorry for slacking on this thread for a while. I have had many things going on and have not had the time to paint and keep you up to date. I have painted a few models and added them to my force. I was forced to add a few of my older models to make things work. I hope to be able to hit the ground running for the next and final chunk.

1750pts complete!! So time again to report on what happened. The attendance was pretty good for so late in the league. I found myself surrounded by Marines!!! Other than myself there was only one other non marine player present and he was the armored company player. It was starting to look a bit scary for my brave guardsmen. Challenges we taken from the bottom up this time. There were a few grudge matches and I was curious to see how it would all turn out.

Paint Judging. (Once again I was not involved but I did get my votes.)

Here are the entries for this month.

Dark Wing (Deathwing and Ravenwing combo)

Black Templars (Our late arrival who has painted with fury to catch up.)

Blood Angles (Still with only one loss!!! But missed a month.)

Imperial Fists (Has really started to gain momemtum both in painting and in games.)

Space Sharks (Curse you sharks!!!! Had a few close ones to them.)

Armored Company (The only other non marine player this month.)

Black Templars (League Organizers army)

Ultra Marines (With only one loss and not likely to slow down.)

So the armored company player snagged the painting award this time, and about time. It was between armored company and the imperial fists but the tanks could not be denied. The fists player has put a lot of time into his army and they are now starting to look like he had always planned. He may take it next month based on how much effort he can put into his next chunk.

My games.

GAME 1. IG vs IG armored company

I was challenged by the armored company. He took one look at the massive amount of marines with rhinos and krak grenades and opted to play paint ball with his IG buddies instead. Our last game consisted of me cowering on my objectives and getting pie plated for 6 turns. I killed not a single tank and i had very little left at the end of the game. With his faithful view of his army, he has no scoring troops only tanks, I was able to get the win last time with 3 or 4 guardsmen cowering on the objective. I was determined not to cower and take the fight to him. He had many more tanks this time but so did I.

The game was 12" deployment and the base mission (one objective each in our respective deployment zones.) I knew right away he would sit back an plate me to death and try to kill me off my objective. What he didn't know was I was going right at him.

Our deployment. (The sentinels were outflanking so I don't know why they are in this pic. )

So I got first turn and pushed my tanks up as far as they would go. Hoping to outflank him and send him on the defensive. Creating a web that if he decided to advance I would have side armor shots galore. With the run of the board I was able to get some side armor shots. Ended in 3 of his tanks not shooting on his first turn. So far so good.
His first turn surprised me as everything he had advanced and opened fire. He concentrated fire on my russes and squad guarding my objective. My moving my tanks 12" and blocked most of his shooting to anything but russes paid off. Few men were killed and the tanks were not scratched.

Turn 2ish

My outflanking sentinels ran behind his vanquisher and managed to kill all weapons but the lascannon. They also stunned and immobilize it. Took 2 turns to do so before they moved on.

So while I was being aggressive he was not holding back. He was going for the tie. About the best the AC can do with out troops. He pushed his tanks into positions to contest my objective. This is where things got strange. We both started to ram each others tanks at full speed!! At one point a russ was rammed from the front by a chimera, to the side by a hellhound and the back by another russ. Nothing happened. Kinda silly. The table became a game of bumper cars.

Highlight: Karskin destroyed a russ with 2 melta guns.

Highlight: Leman russ lines up the karskin with revenge in mind. Yup all died.

Highlight: After shooting the russ to no effect it took notice of the squad on the hill. Lets just say I had less of them. Not to mention I was one guardsman down after I killed myself with plasmagun fire.

Highlight: My makeshift flanking maneuver pays off as he is now trapped and if he makes a run for the objective I will have side and rear armor shoots all day. Sentinels are also on their way to killing or immobilizing a total of 4 tanks.

Highlight: Closer look of the flank maneuver.

So the game was called when I immobilized his last tank. I went from not killing a single tank to killing most and making a few immobilized. The mission played a big part in that however. He was forced to come at me giving me better angles of fire. I was rushing him as well so the game became a strange one. All my tanks survived somehow and I finally got to kill one of his.

This game was so fun on so many levels. So many rams and blocking of driving lanes made it both strange and interesting. The AC player is so fun to play and his army looks so great I was happy to have played him one more time. He has accepted that it is hard for him to win with out troops. Early in the league he would just kill every model and get the victory. Now it is allot harder to do that, with so many vehicles and troops running around.

IG WIN
AC LOSS

Game 2: IG vs Ultramarines

So this was to be the first time I played the Ultramarines. As they have only lost one game and it was at the beginning of the league I was set for an uphill battle. It also had a few people looking in as the first and second place armies were squaring off against each other. I was determined to give him a tough game. His army is perfectly designed , not on purpose, to beat me. So I rolled for the game type. Wouldn't you know it, Kill points. I was a bit discouraged but figured if I could keep him at arms length I would stand a chance, not much of one but a chance. Then we rolled for deployment. We got night fight and table half's. I just smiled and shook his hand. The game was over before it had ever began. We both laughed as we both knew I didn't stand a chance in hell.

I was still gonna try and make the best of it. Long story short. He rhino rushed me and was all over me with few losses on the way in thanks to night fight and his ability to be halfway across the board. A dread in a drop pod landed behind me and popped my demolisher 1st turn. I was able to knock off all the weapons and immobilize the dread but had to ignore it for the rest of the game as I was being rushed.

I got stomped and never stood a chance. It was still a fun game but lacked the mystery of how it would end. I might have a chance if the mission and deployment would have been different. Hell if even the deployment had been different I might have stood a chance. So I took my licks and we both agreed it would have been more fun if the game type had been different. It was a bit anti climatic. Perhaps we will try again next month provided no one challenges us.

IG LOSS
UM WIN

So that concludes this month. Next month is actually gonna be in 2 weeks. I will be spending some time painting and might have some pics before the next battle. The next one will be the last month of the PnP. After that I might start a new painting workshop thread or a blog thread. More to come...

I think your opponent had a lot more fun than you are portraying.

Wow! This is a crazy good thread! You IG painting is simply awesome and I like them better than GW's as some of the previous posters mentinoed as well(GW's are kinda flat in terms of color, and yours are realistic but also "pop" enough to be interesting and vibrant).

Great dedication on your part for reporting this and sharing it! Good luck with the final rounds of the 40k version and the fantasy league!

Harkainos- You may be right on that one. He probably had a blast beating the hell out of me. He did admit that it would have been a better fight if the set up was different. Please take the pics and post them. It would be nice to see some pics that others have taken.

Mephistoles1- I'm flattered that you think they are as good as you say. Thank you for you kind words.

Also had to put this in. I forgot to add it to my last post.

This happened on one of the other tables. Didn't you roll this Harkainos? It was a pretty crazy looking cocked dice. It stopped on one of its points. As far as I have played there I have never even heard of this happening. Thought you should see this as it is very rare and few people have a camera near by.

Yeah. I rolled that die (dye, dice?) it didn't even spin, it simply landed like that. The weirdest and coolest thing i've seen live.

So, technically Harkainos rolled a 9 with a d6...

Reminds me of that scene in Terry Pratchett's The Last Hero where Cohen the Barbarian has to roll a 7 with one die.

Very cool!

Update: So the next 40k paint and play has been pushed back to May 3rd. The organizer will be out of town. So I might post some of the things I am working on till then. Mostly guard stuff but possibly some space marine stuff as I have been jonesing. I may do some fantasy but as it stands I am not sure I will have the time to do the work on the fantasy stuff.

Also adopted this little bugger. Kinda pointless and cool at the same time. I hope he grows to be khorne. If not he will be made fun of at parties.

Level up Daemon!

Ok, so I had Sha1emade help me with the pictures. One thing I noticed is that I am very sloppy. Geesh, I need to slow down when I paint. I have found that I am always trying to take 'shortcuts' that end up making them look aweful. I thought these 2 were done, but seeing these photos... I have more work. Here are my 2 HQ's.

Here is Chapter Master Taran Phoenix

Here is Captain Darnath Lysander

If you wanted to see more of my stuff you can follow this Link I dipped the tacticals (big big big mistake). But the rest use the same techniques you see in the pics above. C&C welcomed and encouraged.

We have one more round left to go. It got pushed back. We will have completed 2000pts. I can't wait for the next one. I will probably bow out of the Fantasy one for many reasons. But will do the next 40k one when it starts.

UPDATE: I decided to make a drop pod for my DA. It is a tricky bastard. Also working on a Librarian, chimeara, 2 sentinels, Ogryn, basilisk and a dreadnaught. These are what are in the pipeline.

QUESTION: I am thinking of renaming this thread after the last round of the PnP. Was just thinking of it as a all purpose thread / blog. As it already contains the things that I would start another thread for. Like tournaments, gaming, painting, modeling and other things. I was gonna start another thread but other than the time frame set for finishing models, it will be the same. Don't know what to rename it to any ideas?

I know...Your tank was not the best but the guys around it are very nice!!!I will take a finished pic of the rhino when you are finished and post it here.

So, many of you have seen the photo tutorial on the front page of DakkaDakka. Coldsnap made a great tutorial for modeling pics. I gave it a shot and made a quick and dirty pic. It did not take too long but the quality is only so so. I had to dirty up the pic quite a bit to cover the mistakes. I wanted to see if it could be done quickly. I play Dark Heresy from time to time and wanted to start it up again soon and wanted more handouts for in game. So after reading Coldsnaps tutorial I figured that was right up my ally. This should have taken 5 hrs or so but I finished in 30min. Cut many corners but I can see what can be done with serious effort. So I hope to post more like this and some of my own design after a while. It was fun.

I might dig up some of my old DH stuff and post it here as this is quickly becoming a over all hobby thread. I know it has not converted over yet but it will be soon...

Also just for fun I wanted to post this. A while ago I wrote a scene for a game of Dark Heresy. It was for the end of the module "Edge of Darkness". One of the down loadable adventures you can play. The writing on this adventure was top notch so I wanted a good end game supplement for my players. So I decided to make a audio recount of an interrogation. So I wrote it and went to a friend of mine who is very savvy actor. I work in the film business so this was pretty easy to accomplish. He also writes music and records audio. So we created a audio recording of a Interrogator interrogating one of the bad guys 40k style. It is a bit graffic and we would like to think realistic, we would rate it pg-13 to a soft R so not for the kiddies. It also contains spoilers for the adventure as it was basically a recap. Minus a few problems it is a professionally done piece that I think you will enjoy. I will post this in the fluff section as well. Enjoy.

Ok... So I think I have found a 'method' that is producing satisfying results. Here is my latest model for the PnP.

Please let me know what you guys think. The pics aren't that great. I don't know cameras... Whatever isn't fuzzy, please critique.

Harkainos, I like it, but there doesn't seem to be any contrasting colour in the model. I can't quite see where, but a dash of a bolder colour somewhere would help.
