What is your 2009 budget for miniatures? @ 2008/12/30 19:28:46

This question popped into my head when I was reading the New Year's Resolutions. What are you budgeting to spend in 2009 across all miniatures games/systems?

No more than $12K, probably much less than that, but it matters what exactly is released in 2009.

Well it all depends on how much money I make and how fast I work through my current projects. I first have to pay my fraternity dues and then put some money away for college or other things i wish to buy then I decide upon hobby allowances.

$12k, as in $12,000? Are you crazy?

$500 max, if I end up overspending. Any more and I start selling.

No budget. As ever, if I wants it, I'll buys it.

No plans for a new army at the moment, but I'm slowly discovering the problem with Orcs...more than any other army, you are never. Ever. Ever. Finished.

Just bought Spider Riders today...christ knows what else I'll be adding.

Whoa! I haven't spent that much on hobby stuff in my whole life, including star wars toys when I was a kid. That's the good life. I'm planning on cutting back, most likely around $500, more if that IG superheavy kit turns out to be as awesome as it seems it might be...

I am going to take it slow this year. As little as possible. I am going to try and enjoy what I already have this year, and not succumb to the usual must have latest and greatest.

It should help I am getting a bunch of the new ork stuff any day!

I set my annual GW budget at $350, basically a dollar a day. Back when I was single, no kid, I would spend whatever I wanted on whatever I wanted, ahh, good times...

With IG releasing in 2009, I intend on:
- 1 IG Codex ($25)
- 3 IG Valkyrie set ($150)
- 3 IG Basilisk set ($90)
- 3 IG Sentinel set ($50)
- 1 IG Shadowsword / Stormlord ($95)
After 20% MO discount, that pretty much takes care of my year.

I won't go into details because it will just sound like I'm bragging, but I'm one of those folks that has more hobby dollars than hobby time. Most likely I won't spend even half of my budget this year because GW won't produce enough new 40K product that I will find of sufficient value and I'll end up spending a lot of it on XBOX games or drinking binges or who knows what else.

I have hobby time and no money!

Lets cut a deal, you send me the stuff and I build it paint it and play with it. Seems fair?

In all seriousness if I see something I like and can afford it I will get it. Will probably buy an army or two over the entire year, perhaps fund it by selling off other stuff.

I cant budget but luckily I get paid my pittance once a week so not really a need to

IG could walz over this plan easily

Maybe 500€ in SHT + 100€ in codices/books + 350€ in bikes + x? other 40k stuff.

So far, I don't have a budget. I've been trying not to buy for buying's sake, though some of the new stuff coming out is pretty nice. I'm also trying to clear my back stock of unpainted figures and random buying isn't going to help out with that.

Budget, ach, what a horrible word, ahh to be single and childless again, spending money on whatever I deemed important,GW models, drunken nights on the town,bail....
Seriously,I always take care of all the HOME resposibilitys first, then I figure in what I can spend on "My little Men",as it is I only have a few wants.
2 or 3 boxes of Grots
2 boxes of Nobz
2 Battlewagons (plus one of the direct only accesory frames)
So for now around $230.00,not to terrible,of course I'm also starting a Nurgle based Traitor IG so I guess the Kids will just have to get by on delicious Mac&cheese for a while......yuuuum.

I don't have a budget.
I have a wife.

She doesn't really limit my spending (I do that all by myself). I keep my spending low by NOT ever buying FW again.

Also, after 20+ years in the hobby, I have pretty much what I want already. If I can't build it, I don't need it.

1000 dollars extra from student loans.
500 or so dollars for field training this summer
+400 or so/month government stipend post field training(multiplied by 4(I think))

So that comes out to... 3900 USD! Should be a good year

Budget? Whatever, it's all I can do to keep the wife from buying me everything I happen to mention. I drew an irritated comment when I blew 1200 at a sale at my FLGS this past Feb., but that was it. She actually was there later that day, berating me for not having picked up some of the orc stuff on sale.

I don't know. I'm starting to look at some of the modeling tools for different projects, and those will cost some. But, I have much to finish before I go that route. I need to make this the year of assembly and painting. Before I can do that, I will need to figure out how I am going to kit out all the stuff I already have, but one step at a time, eh? Really, I don't see me spending all that much this year.

For the most part I'd like to spend 2009 building. I actually got a great bit built in the end of 2008 so hopefully I'll be able to keep up that trend.

Come May I could have a different outlook though, it really depends on how the Guard codex looks. If there are any great coat guard plastics I'll throw the no buying policy out the window.

I've got such a huge backlog of stuff it's not even funny, so I'd like to work some of it off.

I think most of my hobby money in the next year will go towards buying foam and carrying cases.

I've got all the vehicles I need for my SM army. I need several boxes of infantry and the Pig Iron heads for the conversions. I am also going to do an inquisitor and guards so I need a commissar for that and some Pig Iron figures.

All that should cost under £200 and gives me enough stuff to keep me amused for a long time.

I will have to spend some money on paints and supplies too.

No Infinity for me this year given the weakness of the £ against the Euro.

All told I don't plan to spend more than £400 this year. I won't run out of stuff to work on after I can get my historical stuff out of storage.

I'm now wondering if perhaps it would be best to have a handful of custom cases ordered up, along with sheets of foam rubber.

I think this year I'm going to try and limit my wargaming spending to $500 or less. In the past I've had huge problems with blowing money on new armies that caught my fancy or were on sale, but now I'm trying to buckle down and actually finish what I've started.

So pretty much $350 for a brand new 40k army, $100 to finish my Dwarf army and $50 to round out my FoW company.

There's umpteen companies making umpteen kinds of cases -- soft, hard, rolling, waterproof, etc. You should be able to find something off the shelf to suit. Custom foam is easy to get hold of once you have the cases.

My budget = retail price for black market kidney.

Mostly done spending on my Space Marines, about 8 models in tote to buy.

IG is a fluff army and I'll buy/make anything I see that adds to it as it comes along.

Depends on the IG codex, and what new releases it brings.

Aside from that, I am setting aside cash monies for a reaver titan, atleast one or two stormlord/shadowsword kits, and perhaps a Valdor, if they improve the rules (and by that, I mean REALLY improve the rules).

Also highly likely: More cadians, if they recut the sprues with additional accessories, great coat guard if they make them + pig iron winter heads, more leman russes (20 is not enough), and more leman russ turrets from FW.

Depending on my financial situation, I may try to finish purchasing my Ork army. Right now I have 150 boyz and 2 big meks. i still need some kommandos and lootas.

Well, I'm fully painted for Warmachine, so if I buy anything it'll just be the odd figure/unit.

I'm not anticipating starting a new system or army, so that brings the number down a bit. Frankly, I'll probably be selling off leftovers and a couple of armies I haven't touched in years.

So, barring creating a 15mm Napoleonics Peninsular force or 6mm Thracians or something ludicrous like that, probably $500 or less.

Well my WFB chaos army needs finishing but that’s going to cost me about another £60. My only other plan is my Empire army based on the Warlord Games Roman miniatures. That’s penciled in for late spring and, barring a price increace, will cost about £160. Bargain!

Of course there is all the normal extra brushes and paints to worry about. This year Im thinking about giving Valejeo and Coat d'arms a go. Just for a change. Mind you being mail order its going to require a bulk order!

Ive also discovered the joys of army painter this year which is going to save me a fortune in terms of time this year. Might stand a chance of getting some rank and file painted!

I reckon about £300.

I earn close to £50k, and if anything that should go up this year to just over £50k. I'm single and share a flat, so rent is low, as are bills...

Naturally, my number 1 expenditure is Friday and Saturday nights out, but beyond that, it's hobbies.

I got back into W40k after 15 years of no GW at all, so I spent a little over £500 (I added it up cos I entered a wish list competition at the local GW store. I could win as much again in a prize draw tomorrow). That included paints, new orks, enough Eldar to make my old army legal again and a few new rulebooks...

I figure £200 per month would be reasonable. Enough to get pretty much all I want, and a bit more, without going bankrupt. It depends on whether I still buy as many books, DVDs, computer games and comics. I have about 5 years worth of books backlogged though, so should be okay, and the computer games I already have get very little time, so I ought to hold off on any more!

After that, well, I plan on an average of £25-30 a month. Depends what I decide upon after that.

I'm probably looking at around £300 this year right now, but when the new IG codex appears that could jump some. I'm lucky that I take a while to assemble and paint things, so there's normally something idling in my 'to-do' pile that stops me spending more money until it's done/

I don't have a budget, but I don't spend that much anyway, not compared to many. Well, maybe it gets more expensive when adding in all model kits. As a painter more than a gamer I tend to make infrequent pruchases. If I want I buy, but I'll go for long periods spending very little.

If the new guard codex is buff and I find opponents regularly, enough for a new army.
If either of those is no then my spending is minimal.

My response "It's better to have, than to use"

$5k?

I'm trying to figure out if I ever spent that much on hobbies in a single year, but guessing probably not. When I first got into 40k, I was super-disciplined about painting stuff. Like 90+% fully-painted. (Today? Hahaha.... not even close) That much painting kept buying down, as a lot of time was spent on the hobby aspect, rather than just buying stuff. When GW closed down the US web sales, I dumped a bunch of cash (like when I got into Magic), but even then, I guess it wasn't that much.

My hobby stuff stays in its boxes and storage cases, so they don't add clutter. And the total space taken up doesn't spill outside my room. Or even take up an excessive amount of the room. So my other half has very little basis for complaint. She knows I have a lot of stuff, and there's enough in there for me to sneak in extras, but not so much as to create nagging. Really, I have the perfectly-sized backlog. Of course, I'm also sticking to a budget, so that helps, too.

That's a good sign, IMO. If you don't have a reason to buy, don't.

Yes. Unfortunately I'm not currently in a long thrifty period as the DKOK are currently burning a hole in my pocket.

On the otherhand I have to paint them, otherwise my wife will kill me. They're too expensive to just sit around.

Heh, that's pretty funny.

The only better story is of this other guy (name withheld) who bought models. He got to the point where he was hiding models from his wife in his car trunk, I guess because his home storage space was getting to be a problem. Eventually, he overflowed the trunk, and came to the guilty realization that maybe he should actually build something...

But I tell you this, those scale model guys are certifiably nuts. I've seen reports of entire basements being filled with unbuilt model kits. That's a few full cargo containers worth of stuff, enough to easily stock a large hobby store. Something about the notion of entire squadrons of 1/48 aircraft or 1/35 armor.

Anyhow, this year, I'm finishing my Tallarn / Armored force. Want to compare notes next year to see who's done better?

My dad is a big military modeller, there's 30 years worth of kits providing insulation in the attic at my parent's place, must be hundreds of the larger kits and masses of boxes of 1/35 figures and little 1/72 or 1/144 things. Far more than I'd ever want to build if he thinks I'm completing his legacy.

Anyhow, this year, I'm finishing my Tallarn / Armored force. Want to compare notes next year to see who's done better?

And money!! I'd need more more units of men, and the flamer pair is nice, then the HQ unit is a must-get, I love that. I really like the cavelry, but I really do have to ask myself about the value for money on those, £50 for five 28mm mounted figures? Quite like a Gorgon too...ouch.

The rough riders are the best of the Tallarn range IMO.

Aside from the mismatched 2E Attilan boots, yeah, the metal Tallarn roughriders are aces. Lately, I'm thinking of getting a unit just to rebuild as Sentinel conversions, but the cost keeps putting me off.

For resin, I very much like the Tallarn snipers, although the monster riders are pretty cool.

Besides, I'm planning on 3 Valks and a Shadowsword to go with the new Codex, so that's a good chunk of cash I'll be laying out this year... I mean, 3 Valks or 1 Gorgon? Gotta go with the Valks.

Who isn't (other than non-Guard players)???!!!???

Can't wait for that one. That's my budget then:

2 Shadowsword/Stormlord kits
6 Valkyries
8 Drop Pods

And a Vulture ever shows its face (either the combined Valk/Vult kit, or a FW conversion kit) then add three of those as well. And maybe some Deathwind Assault Pods or whatever they're called now.

my 40k priorities are

1. finish up my nids. mostly bought, i just need to build a few and paint-n-dip a lot. hopefully ill be done in time for Adepticon

2. Finish buying my Sisters of battle, just a few oddes and ends around $200 i think. depending on new guard codex, the girls might get a few guardsmen to kick around. that would take me over that 200 though. plastic valk

3. Paint up some tau. enough for a combat patroll first, then work my way up to 500, then 1000, mabey even get up to 1500

4. Start an Eldar army at Adepticon (i am hoping i will be disiplined enough to go with a "Must paint the purshase before you buy more"... we shall see how long THAT sillyness lasts)
sadly enough, i am thinking ill start the eldar off with buying a Titian at Adepticon... mabey resist the urge and put it off for 2010.

not a whole lot of spending in store for 2009 mostily building and painting. should be easily under 1k for the year (even with the titian) plans as of now are to take care of most of my buying when the tax returns and stimulas packages (i didetn get one last year, H&R block said i will get it this year) come out.

funny, i dident think about it untill now. but in the past 6 months i have spent more on blood bowl then on 40k 50$ for a team in early october. will i keep this trend or not

For me this year its all defendant on how much I make. I try and commit to buying at least a little something every week when I hit up my FLGS. If for no other reason to support them. So lets say I spent at the least 15$ a trip. 60$ a month for 12 months plus more whenever I can

not too sure, but when my dad's citizenship ran out years ago ( hes not in canada anymore ), the government
made us pay a******* amount of penalty fee. after months of them going through the details, they refund
w/e left they over charged.

I hope the new battle force comes with something like....
1 skink unit, 1 saurus unit, 1 temple guard unit ( new plastic of course ) and 1 sauraus cold one ( with new darkelf coldones )

is this a possibility? and why arnt the kroxigor in plastic of 3 per box sort of like rat ogres? or ogre kingdom stuff?

no budget. if i see something i want, i buy it, if o dont have the cash i save for it. if i HAVE to have it right then i have reserves i dip into that i replenish on a weekly basis.

then again, no kids, no mortgage, cheap rent and a sugar momma helps alot.

Bring by SM Battle company up to 4000 points with about four more tanks and six more rhinos, then when the Imperial Guard comes out to get a 3000 point infantry company which if I don't buy a new computer this year, I will attempt to upgrade to a Battallion. So all in all between 700-3000 dollars. Depends on how rad Empire Total War turns out to be and whether I will need to upgrade my computer to run it decently.

There's a fairly solid gap between 700 and 3000 Ratbarf. Does that include the computer?

Yip, I generally spend around 2000+ dollars on computer parts which I then assemble myself. For the hobby projects the tanks should only cost 300 or so and the guard army 500 to 700.

the only problem with this being I still have to paint a crap load of models... somewhere along the lines of 200 Brettonian figures and the hundred odd guardians from the Guardian horde I bought last year...

Pounds, Dollars, Yen, Drachma, doesn't matter. I'm an impulse buyer and don't want to add up what I spend over the course of a year; and the storage place proves it! But guarantee it won't be on WD for $8 USD a pop.
