Alrighty, I've been slowly working on my armies for a couple of years now, and I figured that I might as well start to finish them up. So, I've made several bits orders and am now going to finish them up as soon as the bits start coming in. I've got two armies that need to be finished, and those are my Chaos Space Marines and my Armored Company. The basis story behind the CSM army is that it was a successor chapter of the Blood Angels, called the Death Angels. They were known for their ferocity in hand to hand, even surpassing that of their parent chapter. They were prone to mutation, with some of them even having wings. They were betrayed by the Inquisition, who viewed them with suspicion due to their numerous mutations, and were led into an ambush involving some Renegade Chapters. The last surviving ship fled into a warp anomaly, only to return years later as a revenant ship, seeking revenge against those that had betrayed them.
The Armored Company started off as a loyalist army, but after getting some basic painting done on it, I felt it just didn't suit me, so I decided it was going to be a Renegade AC who worshipped the Death god named Mortis. Still working on all the details of their fluff at the moment. So, with all that said, here are the pics I have taken so far.
I'm building these armies up for Apocalypse, as that is mainly what I play these days. For the Death Angels CSM, this is what my goal is:
1 Terminator Lord (Completed)
2 Units of 10 Terminators (Completed)
2-3 Sorcerors
1 Unit of 10 Chosen (Completed)
4 Units of 13 CSM (13 is the favored number of Mortis) (Completed)
1 Unit of 13 Raptors (Completed)
1 Unit of 10 Bikers (Completed)
3 Units of 3 Obliterators (Completed)
2 Units of 20 Demons (can be used as either lesser demons from Codex: CSM or "flavored" demons from Codex:Chaos Demons, since I will be using them in Apocalypse) (Completed)
1 Land Raider (Completed)
2 Rhinos (Completed)
1 Defilers
For the Mortis Legion Armored Company, my goal is to have the following:
6 Leman Russ Battle Tanks (Completed)
3 Basilisks (Completed)
9 Sentinels (Completed)
2 Chimeras (Completed)
3 Hell Hounds
1 Chaos Warhound Titan
1 Baneblade (Completed)
1 Stormlord (Completed)
1 Renegade Psyker (Forgeworld model, will count as my "necromancer") (Completed)
2 Units of 10 Stormtroopers (Using the Chaos Renegade parts from FW) (Completed)
1-2 Units of Ogryn Berserkers. ( FW) (Completed)
2 Technomancers (using the Titan Tech Priest from FW)
Servitors to accompany the Technomancers (will use the Iron Brother Hood models by Micro Art Studio)
First up, some pics of my Mortis Legion Armored Company.

Still some more.
All the areas enclosed by the spikes are going to be filled with skulls, skull piles, and bodies.
All those pics were taken a few months ago, and I stopped working on the army after that. Last week, I started working on it again, and here are just a couple of new pics of one of the Basilisks. I have done a lot more work on the other tanks as well, and will get some pics up when I can. The paint scheme is going to be black with some flames coming up from the bottoms of the tanks, sort of like The Legion of the Damned.

Next up, my Death Angels. These are all WIP models, so if you see things missing (like shoulder pads or arms) it is because I am waiting on bits to arrive or haven't decided exactly what is going on the model.
My Terminators. The majority of them are going to be equipped with double lightning claws, the weapons GW decided not to include in the Terminators box, which is why they have no arms at the moment. Going to have to order those bits, and they ain’t cheap!
I'm adding some details on them using small tank chain and skulls from the new Skeletons box in an attempt to mimic some of the Forgeworld Chaos shoulder pads.
Some new Chaos Marines.

These are going to be my Obliterators, which are nicknamed "Gun Wraiths." The lower body is from some long oop liche type models. I'm going to have to make molds of them (there are two versions) since they are very hard, if not impossible, to find these days. The power-scythes will count as power-fists, and I've decided that all power-fists on other models in my army will be represented by power-scythes in order to keep everything consistent and avoid confusion.
Okay, here is a prototype for my Raptors (Reapers). Still very much a WIP. The head is from an old Reaper Miniatures figure that I cut off and filed down to size. I will be making a mold of this head and then casting it for the rest of my Raptors.

You know, i normally don't care for the spiky bitz- but somehow your uniform use of them here is kind of appealing- especially on top of the sentinels and, surprisingly, the Baneblade. And the skulls along the Baneblade tracks are cool too.
I guess the lesson is if you're going to do spikes, do 'em all the way.

I am ashamed that you turned away from the cadians and went traitor! However if you were ever going to that is how you should do it. Great conversions and I love the baneblade!! I run a cadian army and hate to see you leave us but now who better to fight than a traitor AC. Can't wait to see your painting on them.

Savnock: I say as long as it looks good, the more spikes the better!

Sha1emade: If all my bits arrive this week, then I should start painting on the AC by the end of the month.

Thanks for all the kind words. No new pics today, but I will probably get some more up tomorrow. I'm still waiting on a few bits orders to come in, so work has been kind of slow this week on them and I've been trying to get as much done to them as I can do.
CommissarKhaine wrote:I really like the baneblade. It's suitably gothic and chaotic, without adding tentacles and bits of cocktail stick. great work!
Yeah, the Gothic look is what I was going for. They aren't exactly Chaos like other Renegades, but they aren't exactly "good" either. Basically, fluff wise, they had adopted an unorthodox fighting style prior to worshipping the death god Mortis in that they outfitted their tanks with spikes and the skulls and such of their enemies in order to strike psychological as well as physical damage. Then, through the influence of a rogue Inquisitor, they came to believe that of all the "powers" in the universe, that ultimately Death was supreme, as even the Emperor of Mankind is on the brink of death and will eventually succumb to Death, much like everything else. So to show their dedication to Mortis, they have added even more skulls, spikes, and bodies to their vehicles, turning them into "shrines" to their god.

Thanks! The paint scheme that I am thinking of right now is black for the hulls and chainmail/boltgun metal for all the spiky bits and barrels and such. Painted onto the hulls will be flames similar to this (this Rhino is not mine nor was painted by me):

Thanks guys. No new pics today, as I am still waiting on a few more bits orders to arrive. I've been working on some of my Death Angels but nothing of pic worthy quality yet.
In the meantime, I'm thinking of a new unit to add to the Death Angels that is based on the movie Thirteen Ghosts. Does anyone have any good ideas for different models currently out there that would provide good base models for each individual ghost from the movie?

Post by: Lord_Mortis
Well my tanks are pretty much finished as far as building goes. Just need some paint on them now. But before I do that, I'm going to build up my Death Angels CSM back up to a playable level again. The Death Angels have been a WIP since about the beginning of 40K 3rd edition. Their fluff has gone through a few changes, and with it, the look and theme of the army. They started out as one of the lost Legions, complete with a Primarch who began dabbling in Necromancy and before you know it, the Legion was condemned as herectical. So they were just like the other Traitor Legions except they used ghosts and wraiths instead of demons. As far as playing them, they were pretty much a mish mosh of the main 4 Chaos powers, although modeled to fit the "undead" theme. For example, here is a unit that would be used as either normal CSM or "Blood Lords" (using the rules for Khorne Berserkers).
Here is a Land Raider that converted several years ago for this army.
And here is the Defiler that I made before the actual Defiler kit came out. Building is complete on it. It just needs to get the painting finished on it.
So I played that army for a while, but something about it just never felt "right." Then Pirates of the Caribbean came out, and I suddenly found my new inspiration. My army would be a cursed "skeletal/ghost" army like the movie. So I rewrote the fluff, making them a second founding chapter of Blood Angels who got set up and ambushed, with the survivors having to flee into a warp anomaly that led to the Netherworld, only to return some years later as Revenants seeking revenge on those that betrayed them and ambushed them. And thus we have the army I am working on now. Although it's taken quite a while to get them to this point, as I got sidetracked with other projects and only worked on the army sporadically. So now that several of my bits orders arrived last week, I spent most of last week working on the Death Angels. And here is what I have so far.
These are all still very much WIP and far from finished. First a pic of the army so far:
That is, from left to right, 20 Terminators, 10 Chosen, 4 Heavy Weapon models, 4 units of 10 CSM, 1 Terminator Lord, 5 half-built Raptors, and 9 Obliterators.
Next up, some pics of my Terminators showing some of the detail work I have been doing for their right shoulder pads.
Next up are my Obliterators. Finally got the molds made of the lower torsos so I could get started on them.
These are some of my Chosen models. Basically they are made from Khorne Berserker bodies with all the Khorne icons cut off and replaced with skulls.
1082
Post by: Lord_Mortis
So I was thinking my Obliterators were lacking something. Like they were needing something to make them more "bulkier" but not necessarily "bigger." After a few minutes of playing with the bits box, I came up with this. What do you think?
9538
Post by: The Thousandth Son
Which Chaos God do they serve? Nurgle?
I think it'd be kind of cool if they used Warp energy or Daemons to animate corpses, sort of like a human Defiler.
1082
Post by: Lord_Mortis
They don't serve any of the known Chaos Gods. They have returned from the dead to seek revenge against those within the Imperium that betrayed them and against the Renegade Chapters that ambushed them and destroyed them.

Thanks for all the compliments. For those asking about the resin casting, I use products from Alumilite. The process is pretty simple once you get the hang of it (after about 2-3 molds). Here is a link to some tutorials from their website.

Purple flames on the Armored Company or the Death Angels Marines? I wasn't planning on flames on the Marines as I didn't want them to be to Legion of the Damned-ish. But I was planning on putting flames on all the vehicles in the Armored Company. I was going to the traditional red/yellow/orange flames, but purple flames might just be the way to go....

Now, for a quick update.
Some more Forgeworld goodies for my Apocalypse Armored Company.
Ogryn Berserkers. I am going to paint them in a zombie-ish paint scheme.
Chaos Renegades. I will use them as Storm Troopers in two units of ten.
And my Necromancer. Not sure what rules he is going to use just yet.
Now on to my Death Angels Marines.
I made all the hooded skulls in the following pics by using a rotary tool to hollow out some Dark Angels heads and then inserted some resin skulls I picked up from Fortress Figures.
My Bike squad, which I will call the Deathriders. They are just needing a couple of skull bits here and there and their back packs, which should be arriving this week.
Death riders with meltaguns and some random Deathriders.
Deathrider's Icon bearer.
My Deathrider Champion. Yes, the similarity to Ghost Rider was intentional!
My Raptor squad, which I call Reapers. They are obviously needing their wings, which I am ordering today.

Yeah, they didn't look as "bulky" as I wanted them too when I first made them. The Terminator bodies fit the lower halves well, but the addition of the shoulder pads and spikes makes the lower half look smaller. With the addition of the capes, the tunics, and the skulls/rotting heads, I think it blends the lower half in better with the upper half.

These seem to be lacking something, as they are not quite as "terrifying" as the tanks. I think what they may need is some chain wrapped around them (or barbed wire) with some skulls and such hanging from them. I'm also thinking about putting some spikes in some of the leg joints.
If you want them to look scary, drill a skull out, and place it on the lascannon's muzzle. That'd be sweet.

Alright, so it's been a while since I updated this. I have finished up my Chosen squad and the Champions and Icon bearers for my Troops selections. All the models I had painted prior to these looked too "new" for an Undead CSM army, so for this batch of miniatures I decided to weather them up a bit and add some rust and patina to them. I liked how they turned out so I will eventually go back and weather up all the others I have painted. With this batch done, I am now turning my attention to my tanks as I am burnt out on painting so many CSMs. Once I am done with my tanks, I will finish up the rest of the Death Angels CSM.
For the rust effect, I used a base of Vermin Brown and stippled it on the models. I then used some Fiery Orange and stippled it on top of the Vermin Brown. The patina color is a Folkart "patina" color that I found at Michaels that I mixed with water and washed over certain areas of the models.
My Chosen Squad.
Aspiring Champions and Icon Bearers for my Troops.

Thanks! The scythes were taken from the Warhammer Fantasy Zombie sprues. Lots of bits ordering to get the number I needed. lol The handles are Chaos Terminator Power Weapon arms. I clipped around the "pointy/arrow" part of the Terminator weapon, then cut the scythe blade into shape around the pointy bit, then glued the two parts together.

Thanks for the comments guys!
I am currently painting up my Basilisks, but got an idea for my Sentinels that I wanted some opinions on. My Sentinels were a little bare and didn't seem as "scary" as the tanks, so I was trying to come up with a way to make them more scarier looking. Then it hit me a few days ago that hanging some corpses up on the front of them might look nice. So what I planned on doing was having skeletons on one unit, zombies on another, and maybe a mix of Guard/Spacemarines/zombie bodies on the third unit in order to tell the 3 different units from each other.
However, I am really liking the way the skeletons turned out, and I may just differentiate between the 3 units by using tattered banners. So what do you guys think?

Thanks guys!
Since the back story to my Death Angels is that they were a subsequent founding of Blood Angels that were almost annihilated, with a few escaping into the Netherworld only to return as Revenants, I've decided to run these models as an entire army of Death Company sometimes as well. I also like the Sanguinor and so in large games, like Apocalypse, I will use The Old Death model to represent him.

Yeah, I just don't have enough Death models running around. lol. And hopefully I will be back to playing at a table top near you in the next few weeks.
Well, I didn't get to finish these like I had wanted to but I figured I would go ahead and post the WIP pics. I am doing these in two parts, the first part being the hull and the second part being the turret. For the hulls I just need to go back and touch up all the black. I am going to add penants to the turret arials like I did with the Chimeras.

Just a small update. Since I run my Death Angels as Death Company as well as CSMs, I added some Stormravens to their arsenal. Just finished converting these up today and got them base coated black. This is my "counts as" Stormraven, using extra bits I had lying around. For example, the TL lascannons are 2 multi-lasers glued together and the TL multi-melta are TL heavy flamers. Not really interested in sinking a bunch of money into these if GW is going to release an actual Stormraven model possibly next year. All I had time for was a quick snapshot before I left for work earlier. I will get better pics posted this weekend. Can anyone guess what vehicle I used to make my Stormravens?

They are impaled on the inside of the transport? Don't want them flying off during flight, although, dead bodies falling from the sky onto the enemy would be a good psychological weapon! lol

Painted some more on my Raptors wings this week. I used a gray base color and then washed the recesses with a purple wash. When I began painting the Raptors I didn't know whether to paint the robes gray or black, as I thought black robes and black armor might be too much. But with the grayish wings, I think black robes will be fine and everything will eventually blend in and look nice.

Thanks! Going to start on my version of Astaroth and The Sanguinor next.
1082
Post by: Lord_Mortis
Finished up my version of the Sanguinor last night. Since the background for the Death Angels is that they are a successor chapter of Blood Angels who got caught in the Netherworld and came back as Revenants, I run this army as either an entire Death Company army led by Astaroth or as a CSM army. When I saw the Enigma miniatures model "The Old Death" I knew I had to get one and use it for something. So when I run this army using Blood Angels rules I will use it as the Sanguinor, and for a CSM army I will probably use it as a Demon Prince.
I primed the entire model in Chaos Black. For the cloak, I gave a base coat of Adeptus Battlegrey, followed by a wash of Badab Black, and then a dry brush of Codex Grey. I drybrushed the wings with Fortress Grey followed by a light dry brush of Skull White. I picked out any bone with Bleached Bone and then washed the wings with Devlan Mud. For the armor and scythe, I used a base coat of Dwarf Bronze followed by a wash of Devlan Mud and then a patina wash and light highlight of Dwarf Bronze. The parchment and wrappings I used a basecoat of Bestial Brown followed by Bleached Bone and then a wash of Gryphonne Sepia to "age" them a little.

Next up is my counts-as Stormravens that I started last year before the actual model came out. I didn't spend too much time or detail on these since they are counts-as and I may get the actual models at some point in the future, at which point these will be obsolete.
And now another WIP pic of my Death Company Dreadnoughts, which I will be working on next.

Why not just call them Mk I Storm Ravens and leave them as is? I think they look great! Then again, if you get the new ones, you could always give the old ones to me! Are they GI Joe mini sub convertions? Awesome!

Thanks! Glad you like.
But why do they still have the Imperial Eagle wings on their wings?
The short story of it is, according to the background for this army, is that they basically worship the Angel of Death, and the person responsible for leading them to their worship of Death has used iconography found in everyday use in the Imperium as "evidence" of Death worship formally being in the Imperium. Sort of like how the Apostle Paul used the altar of the "unknown god" to preach about the existence of Jehovah to the Athenians in Acts 17. So they retain the images of the Imperium that are normally associated with the Angel of Death, e.g. wings and skulls.

That's not a bad idea, since my desire to go out and spend a crap ton of money on the actual Stormraven models is virtually non-existent. Glad you like them. Thanks! And yeah, they are the G.I. Joe. S.H.A.R.C. vehicles.

Thanks everyone! I am glad you all like my work so far. I always appreciate the comments and critiques.
Okay, so now that I am pretty much done with the Death Angels stuff for now, it's time to turn my attention back to the Mortis Legion Armored Company. On the workbench now is my Baneblade and Stormlord. As with all the previous tanks, they are going to have lots of skulls and lots of spikes, but being that these are much bigger and more "centerpiece" type models, these are going to be more "shrine-ish" in their look, as they are warmachines dedicated to the god of death. Here is what I have so far.
I am going to incorporate the following bits onto these models, as well as some other bits from the Corpse Cart kit. The flaming skull columns are going to go in the open bay area of the Stormlord towards the back, with the reaper statue in between them. The reaper fig came from RAFM miniatures. I am going to add some candles and a big necromantic tome to the bay area as well, as it will be the command tank from where the Necromancer will guide the army. I am also going to use the reaper statue on the rear of the Baneblade turret.
I also received my box of skeletons from Wargames Factory and I will be adding them to the bone/skull piles on both tanks, as well as being placed in other decorative areas of the tanks. I usually start my projects with a general idea in mind and then start adding things as the models start coming together, so I don't know exactly where all the skeletons will end up. I chose to use the WGF skeletons as opposed to the GW ones because it seemed there would be more usable bits with them. Plus I get 30 in a box for $20 instead of 10 for $24.75.
So, that is what I am going to be working on for January and February. Hopefully I will be able to finish one a month, but I am also starting a campaign that I need to make some terrain for so we shall see.

You know what, I think it could use some more skulls! lol Glad you like it.
So here is the first Baneblade all converted up. Can't really do anymore with it I guess so time to get it primed and painted. The Wargames Factory skeletons were just awesome to work with. Since they didn't come with any weapons attached to their hands, it gave them a more "natural" look, as opposed to a closed fist hand with the weapon cut off. I also found that the legs were easy to bend into the shape I needed to fit over and around the piles of skulls. As with the rest of my tanks, the Baneblade is going to be painted black with gold trim. I am hoping to get this one done by the first of February. Anyway, on to the pics.

It is lacking a few skulls, isn't it? lol. Glad you like it. The story behind all the skulls is that this legion worships Mortis the god of Death, and they adorn their tanks and vehicles with icons of death and the skulls and bodies of their enemies to instill fear in the ranks of their enemies on the battlefield.
J-paint wrote:Looking through all this, well, at first i was going to pay you alot of compliments for the great ideas, by the end...well, im just in awe. baneblade and the bikers and dreads are especially lovely. =] subbed =]

So, one Baneblade down, one more to go. And then the Warhound. I will start converting up the Stormlord this week and I will post some pics of it once that is done.

Post by: Lord_Mortis
So work on the Stormlord has now begun. Started carving off some of the Aquilas so that they can be replaced by skulls (MOAR SKULLS!), shaved off some rivets for the spiky bits to fit, and ordered some more Fantasy bits for it. Got some resin skulls in from Miniature Hobby out of China and I will be putting them to good use on this project. This is going to be a "Fortress of Arrogance" type Stormlord, with the open bay area turned into an alter area for Mortis and where the Necromancer Lord will be placed during the game. I don't think placing the Necromancer Lord (basically a Chaos Space Marine Sorceror) there has any in-game effects, but is more for the visual element.
Here are some pics of the altar I made and the Fantasy terrain bits I have used so far. Made the altar out of a wall from the Cities of Death building sprue, and made the small podium that the Angel of Death statue will stand on out of a spare searchlight from a Leman Russ. Added some plastic card to the sides of the city wall to fill the gaps, and used some plastic card to make the top of the altar. Going to place some skulls around the base of the podium and place some candles along the top of the city wall section.

Simply awesome, LM! Always a pleasure to stop by your blog. That altar is awesome and your previous Baneblade is deliciously brutal.

You're right. It does look similar. Thanks, I have never seen that image before. Only thing I know about Iron Maiden is the "Eddie" character.

I love how the Baneblade's Demolisher cannon almost can't shoot because the pile of corpses is in the way.
Awesome conversion! Keep it up.

err... skulls for the skull throne?...
Awesome work! I really want to see the other super heavies finished, tho they'll have a hard job competing with the first one .

I know right. I guess it will just blow them out of the way. The Legion can always add more corpses! Thanks!

Thanks! Hopefully this one is of the same standard as the first. lol
Well, after a few delays, the Stormlord is now converted up and ready for paint. This one is more of the Necromancer's "ride." It has the alter in the back, the columns with the skulls, scrolls, and tomes, plus a Liber Necris made from the tome from the Mortis Engine. I've used bits from the Dark Angels upgrades sprues, fantasy terrain, corpse cart, Chaos Space Marines, and various other fantasy and 40k bits. And as always, plenty of SKULLS all over it. lol

Thanks! Actually a lot of the words and such on the tomes and scrolls are water transfer decals from Armorcast.

My first venture into wargaming began with 3rd edition Warhammer Fantasy in early 1990. I began with an Undead army with models from various companies such as Grenadier, Rafm, GW, and others. When 4th Edition came around and the Undead got their own book which introduced Nagash into Warhammer lore, I loved it. Nagash's back story was great. (At the time, I had never read the LOTR and didn't know how much like Sauron Nagash really was, and that Sauron was probably the inspiration for Nagash, but I digress.) Then a couple of years later, they bring out the Vampire Counts book with no Nagash or mummies. Bummer. Then Tomb Kings came out in a White Dwarf article, but still no Nagash. Another bummer. I continued to play Nagash using the first Undead book however, which was fine. Then 6th Edition Fantasy rolled around with new Vampire Counts and Tomb Kings armies and Nagash disappeared as a usable character model in the game, even more so with the revamp to Fantasy that 6th Edition brought. So I switched over to 40K and began building Undead themed armies. But now. Now Nagash is back, and with it, my renewed interest in Fantasy, namely the Undead Legions since I still have a ton of Tomb King models that I use in my Lands of the Dead Warhammer Quest adventures. But, I still have a lot invested in my 40K Undead themed armies, so I plan on using the model in both systems. I will probably run him as Aetaos'rau'keres for Daemons, since all my daemons are Undead models anyway. I have put him on an oval base for 40K, and will magnetize the large fantasy base and the oval base in order to use him in Fantasy on the correct base.
But anyway, Pandora Radio and painting Nagash is how I am spending my Sunday, and the start of this project.

The GUO is awesome, love the rust and verdigris.
The thunder hawk needs to have magnetized streams of skulls pouring down from it. (Carpet bombing with the skulls of the dead) just think how demoralizing it would be to have it raining skulls while your being shot at .
