Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/01/14 17:32:58

Post by: kinghammer

After seeing the post last week, I went and checked out Battlefoam.com. The website seemed cool but I was a little cautious with my purchases and picked up one Red Scropion tray for Sabol case and one Red Scorpion for GW case. I got the foam on Monday and I was hugely impress with the quality of the product.

Compared to Sabol:
Don't have to pick and pull
NON STCIK(no putting paper towells to protect minis)
Better Quality Foam
Custom Cuts
Custom Name per tray
More mini per tray
$15-$20 Which is double

Compared to GW:
More minis
Better quality
Custom Cuts
Custom Name per tray
$15-$20 Which is double
Better use of space

Overall I would give the Customer service, Product, and Experiance an A

This is a product review. I have purchased the product and stand by my words. I'm not part or have never been a part of Battle Foam. I have put this disclaimer on here after watching some people get blasted over the past week.

Cheers

Ya there good if you have the money to spend 20$ on one tray.

I still prefer the 8$ a tray with a little work.

It depends. I just ordered a couple from battlefoam because you can get more guys per tray. I want to see how big the spaces are in person before I order more.

The way I see it, if I buy one $18 tray instead of two $8 trays, and can fit the same number of models either way, then I only have to buy half as many cases to hold the models because I need less total trays.

On top of that, during the summer, I travel on my bike, so I only have space to carry one case. If I can fit twice the number of models (or even 1.5 times the number of models) into my case, I have a lot more options. For me, the extra few bucks is worth it for this reason.

You can order trays to fit either GW style cases or Army Transport style cases.

The D6G crew just got some samples the other day... we were VERY Impressed. We had them make some custom trays for Warjacks, Uncharted Seas, etc.

Our next episode will feature an interview with the owner of Battlefoam.

The trays look good and it seems you get what you pay for. The carrying capacity is increased.

If I were going to entrust £100 worth (not including painting time) of figures into a foam carrying case, I would not begrudge an extra £5.

Why shouldn't I? If I get in a bike accident, I'm pretty sure that the state of the miniatures will be the least of my concerns. To keep things in perspective, at any time I may have, maybe, $1k worth of figs on the bike. The bike's worth $20k. My head is irreplaceable. If I'm willing to risk my bike and my head, I'm willing to risk my figs.

I'm not saying its a bad investment, its just not the thing for me. For the few models I use foam for (Most of my boys and other plastic bits are just in an old fishing box I got when I was 10 ^^) don't warrant the need for it.

Still... $20K is a lot of damn motorcycle.

I have an expensive Italian job and it still comes in around $11K. For$20K you either have a very expensive sportbike, a Touring rig like a Goldwing, or an overpriced Harley.

It all looks good, as after reading the ThunderOrk flame session, I checked out the site. I do have 1 word of caution though for the owners, and this is speaking from experience......

Be careful of the symbols and logo's you print on the trays, GW legal will have your behind for breakfast quicker than your Gretchin fail morale checks.

Alex, is that you? I think we had an IG smack off in Vegas. Glad to see your on here. I run conscript platoons in every IG army because of you. LOL They kick major ....... Anyway, let me know if you need anything at all.

Also guys, we add about 10 products a week on our site so keep checking in to find out if we make what your looking for. Don't forget that we are always available to answer emails or phone questions. Just get in touch with us and we'll get things done for you super fast.

As for the Sabol sizing question. Yes, the 40 man troop tray fits perfectly fine in all Sabol cases. The size is misleading because we squeeze every inch out of the trays.

We are also starting a new contest on Monday. We need an official name for our 2 new transport cases launching later this year. We are asking all members of the hobby community to submit their idea for our bag names. The contest will go up on our blog later in the week and you can submit your idea by emailing us. We need two names for a small case, and a giant monster case. The winner or winners we choose will each get $100.00 worth of foam custom cut to fit their army. Along with that, they will receive the new bag that they helped name as a prize.

Keep an eye out for this contest and new products on our site. Also listen to the D6 Generation pod cast this week four our exclusive interview with the guys. On Saturday, we will be live on 40k Radio taking questions from anyone interested in our product. Tune in to 40k Radio to find out more.

Thanks again for everyones support, and we look forward to hearing from each and every one of you. Take care.

How many Warmachine figs with spears can you fit in a tray?

Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/01/16 07:12:50

Post by: Battle Foam

Well, this is an odd question since we don't know exactly what your models look like. What I can tell you is that we can cut any style or shape. Take for example the models we have pictured on our Gallery Section of our site. You will notice a group of trenchers with rifles. These are just an example of an oddly shaped model that can have custom foam cut to fit its shape. We have just added these style of trays to our product page so anyone can order them if they fit.

Also keep in mind that if you have any questions about a specific model, all you need to do is contact us and we can help you out.

Looking forward to working with you.

Quite interesting. The price is a bit higher than Sabol, and I have a metric ton of the Sabol trays around that are unplucked, but this might be nice for the more exotic units.

I wonder how feasible it might be to get two 6" trays to comfortably fit my stompa.

Is it possible to do anything with the foam that gets excised from the trays? Just using a stompa as an example, for a minute... It'd probably require two layers of foam (one inverted atop another) to comfortably fit these things. Obviously the bottom's going to be much wider than the top, which means it's going to lean into the foam at an angle. If the foam that gets removed is still useful, it could be sliced down to, say, 1" thick increments and inserted where needed into the cavity to help support areas of the model that would otherwise not be touching the foam at all.

You bring up a very interesting model. The Stompa. With the new stompas coming out in just a few months, many people will share your problem. We have a few different options when it comes to odd shaped models such as the Stompa.

Option one, depending on the Stompas largest section we would most likely design a tray that would have it laying on its side. The reason for this is the ability to cut very close to the actual size of the model. Since very little wiggle room will be left between the Sompa and the foam, it will keep the model from moving or falling out. By laying it on its sized you also get to maximize space. Remember that we can cut into 6 inch deep foam. We can also do deeper cuts, but it will depend on the custom job. This setup would only work for GW size cases because of the larger working area.

Option two, would be doing a setup like you mentioned. Stacking two different pieces of foam that will act like a top and bottom section. This is also easily done, and would not require the need for spacers or extra scrap foam to be inserted. The bottom section would be cut to fit the legs and belly very closely, and the top would be cut to fit the arms and head area. Since the foam would be custom cut for your specific model, no part of the model would move or wiggle since it would have a cavity that fit its size perfectly.

Lastly, keep an eye out on our site. We will be launching two new bags for Adepticon in April. These bags will answer all your needs for every model ever made. Our large bag will have the ability to hold 2 stompas and over 200 troops. Yes, I am not kidding about that. More details to come.

Let us know if this info helps.

I was curious about this as well. Ork Models lately are pretty huge compared to Space Marines. I use regular packing foam for my models which is OK, but it would be nice to have a custom-spot to place each Ork into. Most importantly, it would make it WAY easier for me to determine that I have indeed recovered every last model from the gaming area before heading home. In short, if there is an empty space left, I should check that game table again.

Or shake down my sneaky friends for hiding my prized Kommando Nob once again!

@Ghost: TBH, I don't like eggcrate because the packing density isn't very good. Cut foam can hold a *lot* more minis in a given space compared to eggcrate.

I don't want the eggcrate foam to hold mini in my cases I have regular foam for that. I am looking for something that I can put in my toolbox that ill hold a few WIP models to my GW where I can work on them more. And I figured that eggcrate would be more useful as it could hold stuff of any shape or size without having to cut stuff to fit.

So I have some answers to your questions and comments.

Solorg -
Ork Models lately are pretty huge compared to Space Marines. I use regular packing foam for my models which is OK, but it would be nice to have a custom-spot to place each Ork into.

We offer foam trays cut just for orks and their larger frames. The foam tray that fits 18 large models should work for you. The 18 large model tray can be found on our products page. We also have a GW one available, but it has not been uploaded yet.

Ghost in the darkness -
Do you guys have regular egg crate foam

Sorry, but we do not have egg crate foam.

Ratbarf-
can you guys do a case for uruk hai pikeman? They arn't converted at all so they look just like the ones on the GW site

Yes, we can do foam for those models. Spikiy bit models are great to do because it shows off our abilities to really fit just about anything. If you give us a call, we can discuss how best to fit those models to give you the most bang for your buck. We will try to squeez as many models in to one tray as possible as long as the models are safe. That saves you money and space when it comes to ordering.

I wanted to point out one other really cool service we provide. Keep in mind that not everything we offer or are able to do can be found on our website. We add about 10 product per week to our inventory so keep an eye out.

The service I am talking about is what we call toppers. Toppers are the thin foam inserts that protect each tray from the one above it. They are normally only about 1/4 inch thick but do really well to put some extra padding between the two trays.

We have the ability to cut custom logos, team badges, retail information, or gaming club info. If you have a gaming club and you would like all the members to put your logo on their toppers, just fax in the artwork. It just needs to be a black and white image and we'll do the rest. The toppers are a great way to express yourself and your army if you don't have the cash to buy the bigger foam trays.

Please let me know if you guys have any other questions.

Romeo

I received my Ultramarines foam the other day and it is AMAZING! The only problems I have are those pictured, namely only unconverted bolter marines fit in the normal case. I realize y'all have other cases and I'm going to be slowly ordering them.

Does the large model tray work for terminators and assault marines?

I can't wait for the bag you're talking about. I was going to order a sabol division for my marines but now I'm going to wait.

Glad to see your happy with your items. We really are trying to list all or our items. Its just a mess getting a new site up and running with a service like ours. We offer so many different options that its taking a bit to get everything up.

We make some special Termy round foam trays that will be up by the end of the weekend. Those should take care of all styles of Termy models. As for bigger Space marine units, keep an eye out. We are putting up heavy weapon marine trays, and a few others.

As for the new bag, and backpack, just listen in to 40k Radio tomorrow night, or THE D6 Generation pod cast on Monday. We have a few more tid bits about the bags and when they are set to launch. I'll hint at this. 1520 models in one back pack. Yes, that will be possible.

Stay tuned!

Hi Navaro, yes we do take paypal. We are in the middle of adding our new credit card merchant to our account. Our credit card system is a bit wonky right now, but it should be fixed by early next week. In the mean time you can use our papal button, or manually fill out your credit card info and process the order.

As for the scans, we can use them also. The only problem with scans is that sometime they minimize the image or enlarge it by just a small fraction. Since we want a snug fit, we try and get the best rendition of the original model.

If you are planning to send in a scan, we ask that you also measure the base of the model and right what size it is. That will tell us that the models base is lets say 1 inch, so we'll adjust the image once we have it to match 1 inch.

Sounds like rocket science, but its really not that hard.

As for Nidz players, we are you solution. We are just about to launch a full line of Nidz foam trays to fit just about anything that's out there. Keep an eye out.

We actually configure the letters and logos to fit in the spots left over after we have maxed out the tray. We fit as many models on each piece as possible, and then the rest of the room is left for text. We always maximize the amount of minis you can fit per tray to get you the most bang for your buck. If we are able to fit extra minis and can't do text, we will not include it on that model of tray to get you the most space for models available.

We also do not charge extra for text or logos. The price for the foam already includes any custom text or logos at no additional cost.

Custom Foam is not for everyone, but once you try it you will quickly see the advantages it has compared to anything else out.

We hope we can help you, and feel free to call or email us with questions.

thanks

Romeo

As a Guard player I would be exceedingly interested in a backpack that can hold 1520 models. Not that I have near that many, but that kind of space equates to a lot of tanks, superheavies, sentinels and the like. Should be plenty of room left over for the meat shield.

The item you are looking for is on our products page. It is the 16 Heavy Weapon Team foam tray. It can hold 16 heavy weapon teams by using the small foam space that comes with the tray. 8 fit on the bottom, then you add the spacer, and last is your next 8 heavy weapon teams. One of these trays costs $18.00

Considering that you can not get round foam from pick and pluck, this is by far the best solution for Sentinels, Heavy Weapons, and similar based items.

We also are adding a 24 Heavy Weapon Team Foam Tray that fits GW cases later this evening. That will also retail for $18.00.

Note that I dont mean to knock a product of a person that actually posts and reads here, thats just too personal and I hate it when people do it, I was just saying. It looks like a great and well made product, I just didnt understand the logic of the names being there.

Hope you do well with them!

For me its important to have the names... not only for the extreme cool factor but because when you have several custom cutted foams with random shappes you will need to name them in order to quickly identify wich models go there... For example 150 tyranids converted and each couple broods with diferent customized foams... see the mess if they dont have names?

Sgt Diablo thanks for clearing all out so quickly I will be looking forward the bug foams

Yo Diablo: I'm guessing if you were emailed a template, you could work from that? I'm interested as to how many well-formed Grav-Tank partitions could be made into one sheet, with seperate space for turrets. I'm hoping four, because I intend to carry at least seven.

Hi Artick_Firangi. Yes, we can work from emails, faxes, or scans. We just need to get as close of a rendition of the actual model as possible. Grav-Tank trays for Tau and Eldar skimmers are going to be posted in the next few days. Feel free to email over any items you may need us to look at. Also check the site for new foam coming up.

We can also do a custom quote for you if you email over everything you need done along with the size case your using it in.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thought you guys may want to see these. We can cut out Club Logos into Toppers. Toppers is what we call the thin pieces of foam you use to protect your models from the tray that stacks on top.

Anyway, we can cut any logo or design into the topper to help promote your gaming league, store, or club. Just an FYI.

Thanks

Hey Diablo,

Do you guys have the tray that holds the SoB excorcists up for sale as a regular item? and if so how much is it?

also, is it possible to fit 4 of them in 1 Sabol sized tray? (cuz if you can i will buy it like right now, cuz I'm tired of the organs falling off and whatnot).

Thanks a lot (and i plan on purchasing a couple of trays in the not too distant future as well)

If you want to order the Excorcist foam tray, just call us. I can get you a price within minutes. Also, yes you can fit 4 excorcists in one sabol tray. The customer that is pictured in our gallery wanted just 2. Hope to hear from you soon.

Malfred - Yes, we can do the Dakka Dakka logo as long as Yakface oks it. We already have the logo, so let us know if you would like to order it. Let me know.

Thanks for checking this out, and keep a look out for a bunch of foam going up tomorrow. We are hoping to get all our Nidz, Tau, and Necron trays up.

Do toppers come with each tray, or each order, or what? I've been unable to find toppers on the website.

Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/01/19 08:44:49

Post by: Battle Foam

One free topper comes with every $50.00 you spend on our site. You can buy toppers in singles, packs of 3 or 5, but those have not been added yet. They will be going up in the next couple of days.

The only way to order toppers at this time is to call it in. We can add custom text or logos on all toppers.

1 Topper for GW or Sabol sized cases. $2.00
3 Toppers for GW or Sabol sized cases. $5.00
5 Toppers for GW or Sabol sized cases. $7.00

Custom text or logos add .50 per topper.

Hope this helps.

The 72 troop tray is actually a sneak peek of our upcoming bags. We have to bags coming launching at Adepticon in April. We will release one large bag, and one smaller bag. Both bags will utilize our new sized foam as pictured in the 72 sneak peek.

The large bag will have the ability to hold 1520 standard troops.
The smaller bag will have the ability to hold 432 standard troops.

We have tested the larger bag, and we were able to fit 6 Baneblades without any problems.

We have worked very hard in developing these two cases, so we hope everyone enjoys them.

Thanks

Just a suggestion, but you should break down the lists into their individual armies. It would just make it so much easier to find exaclty what you need. since a lot of these are custom cut for units from certain armies.

I sent in an e-mail inquiring about some all destroyer foam and within 2 hours roughly I already had a new e-mail in my inbox letting me know they are creating a destroyer + heavy destroyer foam which is perfect. I must say outstanding work! Looking forward to getting in my troop foam I order a few days ago and then placing an order for destroyer foam!

Hey Romeo, I listened to 40kRadio the other day and heard the interview. I have to admit, listening to you talk about foam for five hours was a bit boring ("FoamyK Radio, All FoamyK All the Time"), but it was good stuff.

On top of that, during the summer, I travel on my bike, so I only have space to carry one case. If I can fit twice the number of models (or even 1.5 times the number of models) into my case, I have a lot more options. For me, the extra few bucks is worth it for this reason.

That is an excellent point, and something I completely failed to realize at first. It isn't just that it's pre-cut, but you can get foam cut in a way that saves space and allows you to store more models than GW or Sabol. The price is kinda daunting, but I'm being tempted more and more to get my own trays and see if I can't fit my entire Tau army in a Motor Pool case (as of now I have to carry around a smaller Platoon as well). When I get some more cash I'll definitely start looking into it.

And the fact that you can get graphics and stuff printed on it is just cool. If I'm not mistaken they do that for free, right?

Hey, just noticed trays for Tau tanks!

Sidstyler - Hey, glad to hear your a 40k guy. The D6 did an even longer pod cast last week with me. Let me tell you, I've heard them both and I'm sick of hearing myself.

As for your question, yes the custom text and logos is all part of the overall foam price. That is kinda the reason for the higher prices.

We could of easily pushed out a bunch of pre cut foam trays and we would of saved hours on the machine programming text and images. The thing is that we wanted people to really have something cool to ship their minis around.

Give me a call or drop me an email when your ready to do something for your Tau army. We'll work out a nice deal to help you out.

@Sgt Diablo: With either of those bags coming out. Will they fit the other foam trays firmly you are producing(in particular the GW foam trays). I ask because I hate the GW plastic cases but I ordered the GW foam trays since you get more bang for your buck with those. If not, I'm torn between holding out till april for trays that will fit your bags or buying trays now to transport my army.

Which of the non-custom trays would be best fit for non-converted Marine Assault Marines? I wanna know how many trays I'd need to fit my whole DA company...

Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/01/21 05:06:46

Post by: Battle Foam

Plastic People - Our cases will be very unique because we are maximizing storage capacity. These new cases will fit more models and have more space. They may seem big to some people, so you'll have to wait and see if they are for you. What we know is that they are very well built and will change the way people transport their minis.

Platuan4th - The standard trays you are looking for are the Scout Bike Trays. These hold assault marines perfectly since they are taller and deeper then standard troop trays.

Looks like I'll be holding off till then! I can't wait to see the quality of this bag. By the sounds of you will be able to have room for 2 armies in a single bag! I don't care about size as if I'm going to look like a nerd carrying my models might as well go all out! Better then carrying a cardboard box like I'm doing right now :(. Though question...this may be a bit early for you to answer this. With these bags will there be preset foam sizes already in it. Or will we be able to select the foam we want to go with it. Or is it going to be an empty bag? Again not sure if you can answer this just yet.

Post by: Battle Foam

The 2 new bags will be sold in 3 different ways.

1st. Empty Bag. This will be the cheapest price point and will get you the new bag empty ready to fill with your own foam and models.

2nd. Pre Filled Bag. This will get you a pre filled bag with foam picked by us to suite a specific army. So your order would look like this. I'll take one large bag with the Space Marine foam kit. The kit will have enough foam to fill the bag and will include the most popular combinations for that army. A kit for each army will be available.

3rd. Filled Bag With Your Custom Cuts. This will be the most expensive of the 3 choices but it gives you limitless possibilities for customization. You pick the foam size, tray style, design layout, and all custom text and logos. Sky is the limit here.

Keep in mind that the BIG BAG will hold 1520 models, and the small bag will hold 432 models.

Stay tuned.

The Eldar tray is designed to fit the tanks and turrets without bases. We did this because not everyone models them with bases attached.

As for the other question about full size pictures of the two bags, the answer is not yet. We are going to start our contest on Friday For Name Our Bags. We need to discuss this with Yakface and see how Dakka can get involved.

Once we have names for the two bags, and picked our winners we will show full pictures of both bags will foam inserts. That should be in the next 6 weeks. Pre orders will be made available 30 days before the April launch.

Yes, we do have pricing, but will not publish that information until March 1 when pre orders will be made available to the public.

Yes, you will be able to use your current foam from Sabol and GW since our bag dimentions are larger then both of the other foam tray types.

Yes, you will be able to fit your entire army in one bag. You'll actually be able to fit 3 armies of 1750 points without any problems.

Yes, seraphims and jump troops of any type will fit in the scout bike trays.

something I havent seen asked yet.

your text you can print onto the foam, can it be done on the short side edge of the foam(instead of top)?

I ask because right now I have trays for 6 different armies that are stacked up on the closet shelf, with another army in the actual case. If you could print the tray name on the side, when i would know what models are in what tray without pulling them all down. I tried painting the tray names with white paint and quickly remembered i write horrible.

Hi guy, sorry for the security errors on our pages. We are moving our site to a new server and it is causing some issues with the Securtiy Cert. It should be fixed in the next few hours.

As for the side loading tray, we are working on a new idea. Its not perfected yet, so as of now you can only apply text and images on the top of the foam. Soon we will have side text areas that will allow people that side load trays to read what is inside. Coming soon, so keep an eye out.

I like the look of your products. I'm going to be dedicating some of my income Tax return to buying one of your bags if not 2.

one of my questions is what are the army kits going to consist of? Since there is no one standard list out there, I'm curious on how you will determine what goes in them.

The only suggestion I'd have is to combine option 2 and 3 together. Get a pre-filled bag with the foam you want, but no custom cuts, just stock cuts.

Can you customize trays to fit specific squad sizes? Orks go in 10-30 troops Gretchin go 10-30 with 3 runherds. Could I order something like a 60 troop foam for Ork boyz?

This would be great to keep my units together. That's why I haven't bought from GW or Sabol yet.

Nice products! Do you have anything that would fit a)Dreadnoughts, with or without arms attached, and b)Land Speeders, also with or without weapons? (Not only does magnetization allow weapon swaps, it makes for easier storage and transport!)

Here is a review from "Word Bearer", a local member of Adeptus Minneapolis who recently bought a tray to see if he liked the foam:

As discussed in the other thread, Battlefoam is basically this guy down in Arizona who has access to what I assume is laser cutting equipment and uses this to cut wonderful foam trays for us to carry our small plastic dollies from tournament to tournament in.

To start with, I'm only going to talk about the "Sabol sized" Battle Foam inserts as these are the only ones that I have purchased. Keep in mind that he does produce trays in the "standard GW Case size" as well.

My experience with Battle Foam actually started off pretty terribly, as in, their website wouldn't actually let me order anything! I tried purchasing a 2 for 1 Sabol sized 40 man standard tray package and the website kept returning "Invalid Account" every time I tried to purchase, even across two different credit cards. After mucking about with it, I gave up after about 5 minutes and decided that Battle Foam was not for me.

About a day later I received a voicemail from none other than Battle Foam apologizing for the issue with their shopping cart, and a promise that not only would it be resolved shortly, but that I could give him a call back to place my order. I decided that I hate Sabol "pull and pluck" trays just enough to give it a shot and decided to go ahead and place the order.

While I on the phone, I spoke with the owner a bit about the company and he was a charming, nice man who was committed to getting me my proper "dollie trays". He explained that I had multiple orders in the system, and cleared that problem up, placed the order for my two trays, and even encouraged me to have some sort of logo etched into my trays(something I originally was not going to do because I thought the idea a little nerdy, but now that I have my trays I can honestly say that I think it is pretty cool). We got off of the phone, and I began waiting.

Unfortunately, I waited a long time. It took about a week for my credit card to get charged, and the trays were shipped out about a day later. In most cases I would be pretty discouraged about this sort of a turnaround, but then I thought about it for a moment: As far as I know, we're talking about a smaller company(1-2 people was the impression that I got) who do this "on the side" currently(I may be completely wrong).

Once my trays arrived, I was greeted to this:

To my surprise, the slots in each tray were actually pretty spacious. I had originally thought that they would be tiny, given the smaller size of the Sabol trays.

These Chaos marines fit into them without any pushing or fighting, even the model with the tall, spiky backpack. The tray will actually hold 40 space marine models very comfortably, and the kicker is that it this tray only takes up about 1/20th of the space in my Army Transport Motorpool!

Using similarly sized Sabol "pull and pluck" trays, I think that I would be able to fit maybe 26 models onto the tray. Also take into account that since I will have pulled and plucked many of the little foam squares out of it, the tray would be weakened and flimsy, whereas the Battle Foam trays seem to have two differences:

1) The Battle Foam tray seems to be made out of a more solid foam and is more resistant to bending than my sabol trays(this could also just be a byproduct of the pull and pluck thing).
2) the "bottom" of the tray, a thin section of a softer, dense foam seems to be both thicker and softer on the Battle Foam inserts than on some of my Sabol trays.

Going into this purchase I was a little skeptical of the end product, especially given the price tag when compared to standard Sabol trays. Now that I have the product in hand, I can honestly say that I'll be ordering some more trays in the near future, with a few custom cuts in mind as well(specifically for my Hell Talon and Hell Blade).

Quick Rundown of Pros and Cons:

Pros
  • Can fit 40 standard models on a Sabol sized tray, meaning more models in your Army Transport.

  • Sturdier foam.

  • No pulling and/or plucking means that you're not weaking your tray by pulling away the glued sections. Also, no frustration when pulling at the deeper trays(I hate working with these, let me tell you!).

  • Individual logos can be added to each tray, giving you some organization options when your trays are not loaded into an Army Transport(mine stay shelved since I use my Transport for two different armies currently- with Battlefoam I think I will start using it for the third).

  • Friendly staff willing to go the extra mile to get you taken care of.

  • Cons
  • A little pricy compared to standard Sabol trays.

  • Seemed to take awhile for my order to ship.

  • Really, for the pros I can see paying the extra few bucks to keep everything safe and well organized, and to save me the annoyance of having to figure out how to best fit X number models into a Sabol tray.

Yes, we can make something for your oddly sized models. That's what we specialize in. No matter what the design is, we can cut it and make it fit. Standard Bearers, Musicians, Wolves, Dragons, and everything else. If one of our pre cuts don't work for your army, just use the custom order foam found on our home page to send in your individual models. We'll cut them to fit exactly your army.

Also check out the how to on sending in custom orders on our custom trays page. http://www.battlefoam.com/custom-trays/

If you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to call us and we can help clear things right up.

    Thanks

Are your new bags going to be comparably priced to your competitors or should we expect to see a premium price tag?

    Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/02/02 17:03:25

    Post by: Battle Foam

Pricing will be done in 3 ways for each bag.

1st. Empty Bag - This will be the cheapest and will get you our bags with no foam inside.

2nd. Pre Loaded - This will be a medium price and get you the bag of choice + pre cut foam. We will have pre cut kits such as the Ork Kit, or the SM Kit and so on. These kits will include troop trays, vehicle trays, and others.

3rd. Custom - This price will get you the bag filled with custom cut foam to your specific army or armies. You pick the bag, the foam, and the cuts. Completely tailored to your needs.

I cannot tell you the pricing until launch day, but they will be priced right for what you will receive. Also remember that you will fit 40% more items in our cases then the competition, so that's like getting two bags for the price of one.

    More info soon to come.

Really cool product! I have 2 questions and 2 suggestions:

    - one of the most interesting things is the ability to do round cutouts. I say "most interesting" as a Warmachine player with lots of 'Jacks But on the custom order instructions, it indicates your shape must convert into straight lines?
    - will you be producing any "regular stock" type Warmachine/Hordes foam?

    Suggestions:

    - for the bags, I suggest keeping the logos/naming on the "modest" side. By that I mean: as a 36 year old professional, I can't bring myself to carry around a case with a giant imperial eagle on it. "Army Transport" is manageable (yes, I care what people think. Sue me!). Of course, they are your product so that's just a point of view to keep in mind.

    - When you guys get bigger (and I think you will for sure, this is a great product) here's an idea to think about for your website: what if you had a flash application pre-loaded with cutout shapes of all kinds (tanks, 40k troops, bikes, warjacks yadda yadda) and the user simply drags/drops shapes onto a foam template and makes it fit. (kinda like an Ikea cabinet builder online or something like that). They could also enter the text and choose a symbol (to avoid copywrite problems you could simply put a placeholder square rather than actual logos etc). Then the user clicks "add this to cart" or whatever. The user could build entire custom orders that way. Kick butt or what? Granted, would cost some money to have it developed for the web so that's why I say "for when your business grows large".

Congrats on a great product. Love your video.

    Jarrett

Will there be any Fantasy based options in this catagory? Do you have any pre-cut trays for fantasy calvary?

I'm thinking that the "15 SPACE MARINE BIKES FOAM TRAY (GW) " one would work for Fantasy Calvary, as IIRC Bikers are on rounded 25mmx50mm bases... Expect that it is only 2" thick.

My Cold One standard bearer is about 5" tall

Are the slots on this in the area of 30mmx60mm? And could you make them in say 5~6" thick pieces?

I really can't wait for your cases ^.^

Orangecoke- We suggest straight lines to deal with the small little odd shapes all models have. This does not hold true for war jacks and similar type items. For these we would do round shapes to get the most items per tray. We always try and fit as many models as possible in the trays regardless of shape. The more we can fit and save you money, the better. Also keep in mind that you can submit custom shapes and we'll cut those as ordered by the customer.

Our naming will not go on the bags, but be a way for us to inventory the bags and show them on the site. We also do not believe that a large name or logo looks good, so our bags will never have that. Our bags do not even say battle foam on them. They simply have our basic logo with the BF shield and wings. Simple and clean.

We have already looked into shape movement and placing as a shopping cart option. The cost is not the issue, it is the ever changing line of minis from the major vendors. Since models always change and new releases happen weekly, shapes would always need to be updated. These shapes require a new writing of the program and flash designed with the new shapes. This problem is more about time, then money. It takes days to program just a few shapes, but it takes seconds to grab a pen, trace, and fax in an order.

Also, anyone can trace a model after watching our video. If people had to spend time figuring out how to place a Jump squad of marines, 2 rhinos, and god knows what else, what would we be here for. We make it easy. Send in your trace, and we handle the rest. Simple and easy.

Thanks for the ideas and we plan on many new features and changes as our small business grows.

Vreda- Yes, there will be fantasy based options also. If you wanted to get the Lizardmen combo, you could select that. One thing is for sure. Every kit will include at least 2 of our 1 inch 72 troop trays. These trays will be available to order later, but a minimum of 2 will come with every pre cut kit.

    Ok, Review (ie praise) time:

Today i got a LARGE package from Romeo and the guys at Battle Foam. I was elated even before I opened the package. Before I go any further, I think i should re-cap what I ordered (and it was a lot). I ordered 3 of the 40 troop trays, 1 of the scout biker trays, 1 tray that holds 4 Exorcist Tanks, and (what ended up being) 3 custom cut trays (for my repentia and penitent engines). So I was understandably apprehensive about the large amount of money that i spent (over $100 USD). Needless to say, I am VERY happy with my purchase. I was a little nervous when i first saw the custom trays, because the cut outs looked a bit small, but it turns out that they are exactly the right size. The sad part is, that even with all of this schnazzy custom foam, I STILL cant fit my entire army into 2 Sabol Army Transports. But that is probably the function of me having a truly massive amount of tanks in my army (like 14 or so).

So, I urge you all to support Romeo and the gang and buy some amazing foam from them. It is truly amazing!

Keep up the great work Romeo! I might even end up buying one of your new army transports at some point for my up and coming Ultramarines army (if I ever have any more money that is! )

    ttfn (tata for now)!

Romeo - I heard you on 40k radio and you honestly sold me on battlefoam, well...your infomercial iced the cake

I want to know a couple things before I order.

    1) You said sabol and GW trays will fit in your new cases as they are smaller than the new sized trays, but I would like to know if they will fit snugly? I would like to buy sabol and GW sized trays, and they also one of your cases and have the foams works in all my cases, but am not sure if your new cases will be accomodating or not.

    2) I have an armorcast reaver and was wondering how much it would cost for the custom trays i saw on your site for a reaver?

    3) I also have a FW Warhound that I would like a tray for, info on that would be helpful too.

Orangecoke - Our shipping is set up as flat rates.

United States is $5.00 for the first item and $1.00 for each additional item.
Canada and Mexico is $10.00 for the first item and $1.00 for each item additional item.
UK, Australia, Asia, and the rest of Europe is $20.00 for the first item and $2.00 for each additional item.

Malfred - We really can not pre make foam for warjacks and similar warmachine items because they are so different and customizable. It would be like trying to read someones mind. As for our troop trays most will fit just about all the different miniature ranges. Spending a few minutes to trace a couple of models is way easier then plucking and picking foam that rips and falls apart. We require such little effort from our customers to get them a great product, why not spend the time to trace.

Vreda - We do not label all the trays by playing style, but please understand that most of our trays are interchangable regardless what system you play. Troop trays can work for vampire counts zombies as much as they can work for IG cadians. The marine scout bike tray can easily be used for empire mounted knights or similar models. As our site grows, we will split things up by army range and style. You'll be able to go to Tau or Skaven or whatever, and look up all the trays available for those ranges.

Joyous_Oblivion - Until next month, we can not give to much away with our bag sizes for copyright and trademark issues. We are getting our bags TM and R protected before we launch so other vendors do not steal our ideas. I will try to answer the question as best as possible without giving to much away.

Yes, you will be able to fit Sabol or GW trays inside our bags. Will they fit snugg, No. We designed the bags to fit our trays perfectly, so that means other makers will not fit exact for basic reasons.

The Reaver titan that we did for the last customer was $20.00 per tray. I think he did 5 trays so around $100.00 would be the cost. If you have a different weapons setup, we can custom cut trays for your specific Reaver, but those trays would be $25.00 each instead of $20.00

The warhound would fall under the same pricing as custom trays. $25.00 per tray and the amount of trays needed will depend on how you have your titan put together and what type of case your run. GW, Sabol, or something different.

Hope this helps you guys out. Keep the questions coming and I'll get you guys as much info as I can.

Also, normal Sabol trays (which I'm already a little tired of) are 7.5 inches wide. If (when) I buy some battlefoam (at 8 inches wide) will I have to squeeze it horizontally to fit in my army transport (which I will be holding onto until I can afford a better bag)?

I thought about the same thing, but after receiving my foam, it really isnt much of an issue. It it a little snug, but it generally fits nicely (ie you can put it in the same way that you put in the stuff that came with the case).

I will have to ditto most everyone else's sentiment that I want one of the new bags when it comes out (though I will probably have to start saving now and not buy any more stuff for my army, but such is the life of a broke college student).

Romeo.. in your newest video.. you show off a 72 model tray next to a basic sabol tray. Obviously yours is much bigger and fits more models.

Question - will *2* Sabol trays, turned sideways, fit in your trays' footprint?

Joyous_Oblivion - The pricing I'm giving you is general because I have no idea what your Reaver looks like or how you want it set up. Our pricing for custom cut foam is $25.00 per tray and that includes the setup, design, or layout. If we already have the shape or design because of pass customers that still leaves us with a new layout if you want something different. That would require a price of $25.00 per tray because we still have to go in and change the program.

Now if you wanted the exact order like the other customer, then you would get the same price. $20.00 per tray. The only time the cost goes up, is if you change things. Hope that clears things up.

Porkuslime - The Sabol trays will not fit side by side in our bags. We designed them that way for a reason. We are hoping to grow our company, not Sabols. That means that we need to make our bags fit our sized foam. Its just good business for us, and I'm sure you can understand that. It would be like Warmachine Jacks having inter changeable parts with a Space Marine Termy. That would just not make sense.

One thing to note. We plan on making our product of a level that requires you to want it. With great customer service, well build and designed product, and fast turnaround, we should do well.

I personally feel that if I can make sure people are treated the way I want to be treated, everything else will fall into place.

    Hey all,

At Romeo's behest (and cuz I wanna show off my schnazzy new foam) here are pics of the foam that i got (at least most of it)

40 troop tray w/ Sisters in it

YES! THEY DID IT! Foam that holds pentient engines (and the Throne of Judgment to boot)

My favorite tray that I got of all of them is the 4 Exorcist Tray!!

    Repentia Tray

Random Odds and Ends (2 cannonesses, a squad of arco-flagellents, and the repentia mistress mostly)

Scout Biker Tray doubling to hold my seraphim

hope that this has been informative and (at least slightly) entertaining for all of you. Also, I'll say it again, these guys do great stuff, you should buy foam from them!

    Later

I know what points you are trying to cover, but you still haven't addressed the one I asked about.

Why am I paying $25 per foam, when the first Reaver paid $20 per foam. If mine has to be custom, so did his, as it was the first to be done. The only thing I'm trying to find out is why I get the extra $5 upcharge on the foam.

    ....

    Persons A & B & C want to make a custom tray for a Warhound.

Person A makes an order a Month or so before Person B

Store BF doesn't have the design made yet, so they need to custom make it.

Store BF charges Person A $20 + $5 for Design and Setup.

Person A is happy and done with the deal.

Store BF now has the design work all done for this Warhound.

Person B now is ready to buy trays for his Warhound, his warhound is the same load out as Person A's.

Store BF not requiring the setup and design work, doesn't need to charge Extra, so Person B only pays $20.

Person B is happy and done with the deal.

Person C now comes along and wants trays for His Warhound, but he has different Weapon Options.

Store BF has to do new Design Work and Setup for these Trays, and thus Charges Person C $20 + $5 for Design/Setup.

Person C can't seem to comprehend this concept.

LOL Cyporlean - Very funny post, and you've hit the nail on the head.

Joyous_Oblivion - The point here is not the extra $5.00 per custom tray, but the fact that we still do not know what you actually want because you have yet to place the order. As of right now, your foam may cost $15.00 per tray. We don't know until we receive the order and do a custom order quote.

We do a quote before we charge any amount to someone's credit card. We always discuss your order with you and in most cases if your the first person sending in a design we get you free shipping. This covers some of the extra cost that your paying for adding a new setup. The extra charge is for spending time on the computer rearranging your custom setup. Again, if you wanted the same exact setup with no changes as the last reaver you would get the same price. If you changed the layout or weapon positions then that would require us to reset the program and would require computer time. That is the reason for the extra $5.00 per tray.

The reaver order you are speaking of had multiple parts and cost different prices for different trays. Some trays $20, and a couple $25. You are not getting overcharged anything because we still don't know what you actually want to order. I would suggest getting the items you need traced and faxing or emailing in the order. Once we have it we will quote you according to your specific order. If you don't want to send in traced items and want the same layout as the other customer, than the same price applies.

Until than no price I say will be true or correct. We really just need to see your order first. That will answer 99% of your questions and get you a final price.

    Hope this clears things up.

The new video was cool, and impressive. What struck me though was the large size of the foam trays. They seem quite large vs the Sabol, and I already find the Sabol case kinda biggish Will the trays be horizontally arranged in the case, or vertically? I suppose that might be something you don't want to reveal yet of course. But it definitely jumped out at me how big the trays were.

I certainly DO understand that, and hope to place an order some time after tax time..

Your trays and adaptability are very impressing so far.

However, if I DO go with you guys, I will have a mountain of unusable Sabol trays to dispose of.. so I was wondering if I get one of your snazzy new bags, will my existing Sabol trays wedge in there if I double them up. Using your bags for multi-purposeing my armies, if you would.

1 bag to hold them all, one bag to rule them.. and then keep ALL trays on a shelf and just take along to game night what I need at that moment.

After watching the video, it's clear that your special foam for the case is a little larger than the GW foam. Can you tell us the width and length so I can start planning out my custom foam to fit my ork army? I'm sold on the bag already- that's for sure. I've even started making the outlines for my dudes, just to be ready for the bag's launch!

One more question, when planning out the shapes for a tray, do we have to provide exactly where we want each figure? Or is it enough to show the outlines and ask that they be put ona tray in the most efficient layout?

    Thanks!

LittleLeadMen - Sorry, but I can not tell you the exact size of the trays until March 1st. Its just part of the whole launch thing. Plus we have to finalize some legal items first before posting details for our IP reasons.

    2. No you do not have to tell us the layout unless you want something very specific. We always try to maximize the load out so you get the most bang for your buck. Looking forward to your future order.

    yeah,

    1 Large P.A.C.K. 1520 with foam ($275.00 Value)
    1 Medium P.A.C.K. 432 with foam ($150.00 Value)

Is there a break down of these prices? they seem a bit high!

    compared to games workshops prices.
    Small (108) $50
    Large (216) $95
Although I can see you fit more men inside battlefoams bags.
The straight up outlay of cash is significantly greater!?!?
plus there is the issue of a HardCase vs (Soft?) Bag.

Basically I'm thinking of upgrading my GW cases with BattleFoam trays for the extra capacity...

1 of the standard 50 troops BattleFoam trays that fits a GW case costs $15 (plus Postage)
2 of the standard 50 troops BattleFoam trays that fits a GW case costs $26 (plus Postage)
so.. Three of these in a GW case works out at $41 for the extra 42 figures in my case. nearly 50% extra capacity...
or If I can fit four of these in a GW Case it'll be $52 to upgrade so I can fit a extra 92 figures in the case. nearly double the capacity...
while if I spend $50 on another GW case I'll able to store 108 more figuers... exactly double the capacity but intwo cases for less...
    Have I got things right?
Can 4 trays fit in a GW case?

I really want to increase capacity but I'm not sure if the maths is right for me....
    Panic...

    Hi Guys,

Just hold on for just a few more days (march 1st) The pricing will be released very shortly.

Please remember that there will be 3 ways to buy the bats.

    Empty - Lowest price

    Pre Filled - Medium Price

    Fully Custom - Highest Price

The contest winner won the fully custom package so he will be able to custom cut all of his trays and pick any combo he wants. That is why the fully custom price is $275.00

Before I give to much away, I'll help you guys with the math a bit.

We'll use standard troops since its the easiest way to compare apples to apples.

A normal GW hard case holds 36 troops per foam tray. They fit 3 foam trays for a total of 108. Price $50.00

A normal Sabol Army Transport holds 26 troops per foam tray if you pick it just right. They fit 10 trays for a total of 260. Price $70.00

Now for our bags. We'll start with the medium bag first.

P.A.C.K. 432 holds just 6 trays but maximizes the 6 inches of foam by giving more models per tray. Our 6 trays will hold 432 troops. Price ????

P.A.C.K. 1520 holds 21 trays but again maximizes the 21 inches of foam to give you more per tray. Our 21 trays will hold 1520 troops. Price ????

So comparing the bags is easy.

To get 432 troops in a Sabol Army Transport, you would need 2 cases. That is a total of $140.00 and does not come custom or with any text.

To get 432 troops in a GW hard case you would need 4 cases that would cost you $200.00. Again, no custom cuts or text.

    Now for the big daddy.

To get 1520 troops in a Sabol Army Transport you would need 6 cases totaling $420.00 and needing you to carry 6 bags. Yes, 6 freakin bags.

To get 1520 troops in a GW hard case you would need to buy 14 cases totaling $700.00 and you would be carring 14 plastic hard cases. Again, 14 freakin hard cases.

So I hope that clears up the math a bit. Pricing will be released in just a couple of days with a full product review on our website (www.battlefoam.com) in video format.

Also, something to remember is that our bags are not soft bags. They are hard cased bags with a canvas outside. That gives you the durability and strength of a hard case, but with the look of normal luggage.

    Stay tuned.

Here is a few answers to some of the questions people have been asking.

Q - What size are the new trays going to be?

A - 15.5 x 12 will be our foam tray size. This size will fit into both cases so expanding into new bags later will allow you to still use all your foam.

Q - Are the bags soft or hard cased, and will they be able to break down for shipping?

A - The bags are build with a hard inside and canvas outside. They will not be able to be broken down and will need to ship in their true side just like GW hard cases.

Q - Will Sabol foam or GW foam fit inside the New Battle Foam cases?

A - No, we designed our bags to fit only our sized foam. We did this because of IP issues with Sabol Designs and Games Workshop.

Q - When does pre-ordering begin, and when should I expect my bag?

A - We will begin pre-orders on March 1st. The bags will be available on our site or by calling us over the phone. The bags will ship on April 15th. If you are attending Adepticon in Chicago, you will be able to pick your bags up in person.

Q - What will the bags cost?

A - The prices for both bags will be up on our site on Sunday. We will also do a product reveiw video that will post here on Dakka and on our site.

Hope this helps some of you out.

    Thanks

Suspense is one thing but great hype and service seems to be high up on your priorities list Romeo.

I think thats a key factor that new buisnesses in a custom manufacturing field that alot of people can't excel in and it hurts them usually ending in closing down.

I know alot of people tryin to hock custom car parts that get shut down in no time at all do to very little or no customer service.

    Hi,

Well, I must say that is an impressive list of minis. You my friend are in dire need of P.A.C.K. 1520. The cool thing about the 1520 is that it breaks down into two parts. This will allow you to only bring the top section if your planning a small game, or bring just the bottom section if your game is bigger or around 2500 or so points. If you want to wipe the floor with your opponent then zip both sections up and bring everything you got. Oh, you'll have some room for a bagged lunch and some gummy bears.

    Hope this helps.

Here's a question regarding the hard-case aspect of the P.A.C.K. systems. Just how hard is it? What kind of construction are we talking about? One thing I have always liked about the GW cases is that I travel around the world quite a lot. I live in the US, but my current contract is in India; so at 22,000 miles round trip as the 747 flies, I damn near circumnavigate the Earth. Just to get to work and back. In 2008 I was about one RCH away from a quarter million miles, back in forth once every 4-5 weeks.
So obviously, since I take my mini's with me, I am very interested in toting as many as possible safely. Would you say that the P.A.C.K. systems are as tough as the GW hard cases? If not, could you give some kind of indicaiton as to what type of construction they are, or something? Not after "state secrets" here.

Without giving to much away, its tough. It's not a hard case, so please do not expect a super hard plastic blown inside. That would be extremely heavy and unrealistic to make in our size.

With foam, our bags will stand the test of time in an airport. Like anything else, you need to pack your items well and the bag will do the rest. People that travel a lot really can use our service because we make the foam cuts so close to the true model. That keeps things from jumping around inside the case. I know if you have a GW hard case like I had, your items are always shifting around inside.

Let's just put it this way. If you have lived with GW hard cases and their foam till now, our bags will make your day.

    Hope this helps.

1 inch x 2 inch holes would work great for kroot, drones, and the old xv15 stealths (what I want to use them for)

I just wanted to chime in with a review of the foam trays I ordered from Battlefoam a couple of weeks ago. I had an empty Motor Pool case from Sabol and ordered foam to hold my space marine army that would fit the case. The foam is excellent, and a great fit. The custom etching is very high quality, and I was even able to get my chapter logo on a topper, which is pretty cool.

My only complaint is that the trays are slightly larger then the sabol trays, by about half an inch. This, unfortunately, meant that I was not able to put 2 of them side by side in the Motor Pool case. I could get them to fit, but it deformed the trays pretty badly. I was able to find a solution by putting 4 inches of trays upright and the rest flat, so I have all my trays in a single bag, which is all I was after.

The new bags look really sweet, but the pricing is out of my range at the moment, since I have all the storage and transport I need currently.

That's the only thing keeping me from ordering a bunch of foam from them. . I have the sabol mark II, where the zipper is on the side. I worry that that extra .5 inch will make it really hard to zip up. I hope someone can put my fears to rest, or at least show me an easy and clean way to shave half an inch off the tray (who needs the engraving anyway?)

    Hi guys,

One of the main reasons our foam is 1/4 inch bigger is because we can not copy Sabol or GW foam sized exactly. That would be an IP problem and would cause legal issues. Just like other companies can not copy our exact sizes for our new foam. By making the Sabol foam we provide just 1/4 bigger you get more storage with very little sizing or fit issues.

Please call us if any of you have questions. I am always available to workout a solutions to any bag you may have. After all, our customer service is our #1 objective.

    Hope that helps.

It certainly does help, I was just hoping to hear from someone with the same kind of case as me saying that the wider foam wasn't a problem with the zipper. I don't want to do any cramming.

Wait, 1/4 inch wider? I thought it was 1/2 inch (Yours are 8 inches, that other company's are 7.5 inches, right?).

.25 inches might be ok, actually.

I just got 1st order from battle foam for my sabol case . The form is great
They hold my mini's great, if you have lots of nobs like I do or some crazy positioned boyz the nob tray holds them great
The troop trays hold boyz and my csm figs, my 1k sons heads are a little big but you can fit 2 of them in the nob sized slot.
The trays are not flimsy like those other weedy foam trays.

I have one but my wife is out of town with the digi cam and I use a ghetto fab phone, so no picture taking ability.

If you look at this pic the cutouts on the far left of the upright tray (The ones that look like arched doorways) are the termie cutouts.

My trays arrived today. I got 2 troop trays and 2 grav-tank trays for Sabol cases.

My reactions is positive, with a few minor caveats.

The biggest problem I had was with the troop tray.

It's fine for Guardsmen and Marines (I tested), but it won't fit Dire Avengers. It does fit Guardians though. It might not also be the best solution for Fantasy Spearmen.

This meant I needed to change my plans a little bit. Fortunately, I had a spare 2" Sabol tray that could fit the Dire Avengers. The trouble with this was that it meant that my army could no longer fit into a standard Sabol Army Transport case - but only barely.

I noticed that the Wave Serpent tray had extra space at the top, so I gave it a haircut (if you look you'll see I'm not much of a barber, but everything still lays level and it protected). This gave me the space I needed to fit the tray, and between the 2" tray and fitting models into the 1" troop tray, I actually have space for another squad if I want to bring the army to 2500. I could fit every model but the Autarch. I resorted to some more butchery to the Falcon tray and made him a nice home using extra space.

Result: 2300 points of Eldar, including 4 Grav Tanks, a Vyper a Wraithlord and an Avatar fit into a single normal AT case.

A few couple images showing the army (yes, I know it's unpainted - it'll be my reward for finishing my last 100 Guardsmen):

And the trays stacked neatly in my gaming closet (this image also shows the difference in width, which didn't pose a problem in terms of fitting the trays in the case):

Overall, I'd give the trays an A. You should check the heights of your models before deciding on the troop tray - I would have been better off getting one with slightly less capacity but a little more space for each model. They are very easy to modify, and they'll do nicely to protect my army.

ASMODAI - Holly cow, I think my heart dropped right out of my chest when I read that you took a knife to the foam. Big guy, that's what we are here for. We want to take that problem out of the picture for you. We want your trays to fit perfect and not have to make you do surgical operations to fit things.

I really want to fix this problem for you so here is what I need you to do. Please give me a call when you have some free time. I will send you out a free eldar troop tray to fit all your taller models. I had no idea you needed something bigger since we never talked about. Again I will get you a tray for free with bigger slots for those taller minis.

Next, I want to get you another free tray in the 2" size that fits larger models. We call it our 18 Large model tray for Sabol cases. This tray in a 2" size should take care of some of the stuff you plucked and picked in your pictures.

I know we did nothing wrong when it came to this order, but you are now one of our customers and we feel that you should be 100% stasified with your product. If that means us sending you free trays without you asking, so be it.

Looking forward to your call and getting these freebies out.

Just to find out, I took my GW foam and cut it to exactly 8x13 inches. Closing the bag wasn't a problem at all. I'll enjoy this makeshift solution for a few weeks, and when it gets irritating I'll buy some battlefoam.

Romeo, I wanted to ask you what the BATTLEFOAM solution is for AOBR Ork Boyz. We all know that they have choppas and guns raised in the air in a dramatic but inefficient pose. The problem is that I can't fit them properly in my hard case foam. Do you have anything that will help me?

    Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/03/15 02:37:16

    Post by: Battle Foam

Chrispy - As some of you guys know, I run Orks. I normally field a green tide army with 6 squads of 30 boys. To get that many boyz I have bought around 7 AOBR boxes to add to my already normal ork boyz squads. I personally use the 72 troop tray with the AOBR boyz facing down. This points their guns down into the foam and shows you their backs. The weapon in the other arm just hangs a bit outside the foam onto the spacer. This works just fine for me and really helps me with my green tide because I carry all of the boyz in just 3 of the 1" trays.

If you want to totally make sure all their bits fit into the tray than go with the Large Model trays that fit ork nobs. This may be your answer if you don't want to lay them out like I have.

Hope this helps, and feel free to give me a call if you still need any help.

I have the Sabol mk2 case. The foam is a bit larger, but fits just fine.

What I really liked about my experience with BattleFoam was the customer service. I had some questions about my order, and Romeo was very enthusiastic about answering everything to my satisfaction. I don't see that with a lot of companies.

Question. On the site it says the foam is 1" thick. Is it really just 1" thick, or is it 1" deep? The GW foam is 1" deep, with a ~1/4" foam underneath.

    Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/03/15 18:33:32

    Post by: Battle Foam

Aduro - Our trays are measured by their thickness without counting the 1/4 bottom section. So if a tray has a 1" size, it's actually 1 and 1/4 inch thick because of its bottom.

Weinas - Thank you for the comment, and we will always make customer service our number one priority. Foam can be replaced, but repeat customers and happy people can not. I personally feel that every customer we have is just a gamer like me that works hard for their money and minis. The lease we can do as a new up and coming company is treat you with the same respect and consideration I would want.

War Grot - My orky mind has been wheeling about the stompa since I got my box a couple weeks ago. As soon as I put mine together I will create something that fits it. Until then just email me your outline and we'll make that baby fit. Promise.

    Hope that helps.

Sgt Diablo wrote:LOL Cyporlean - Very funny post, and you've hit the nail on the head.

    Battlefoam

Ok, quick question, so judging by this post custom trays aren't always $25? Does it depend on how long it takes to move everything around to get the most out of the foam? If it does, what if we arrange everything ourselves and then fax the outlines to you, does that entitle the slightly cheaper price? Would a 1" tray custom cut cost the same as say a 4" or 6" tray? I'm looking to buy the PACK 432 eventually, but I need to figure out how to not go broke if my three or four custom trays (which will use pretty much exclusively your shapes for the Eldar Jetbikes, 2" tall figures, Grav Tanks, and 2" by 2" large figures) are all going to cost $25 each. Basically I'll be drawing up my best estimate of the size of your cutouts, and arranging them myself in a 3D modeling program to figure how I can fit all of my stuff into 6" of Battlefoam foam. The only "new" cutouts would be my two Wraithlords, which would be 4.5" by 3" rectangles, and two 1/2" by 1/4" cutouts on the front of two Jetbikes for my custom shuriken cannons on the underside(using the new ones from the Wraithlord/Warwalker sprues which are significantly longer than the 1992 version on the Jetbikes.) Last thing, I know you've been really busy, when can we expect to start seeing some of the more generic 15.5" by 12" trays on the website? Right now the only things in that category are the bags and army loadouts themselves.

I'll second that last request. I'd really like to see some more options for your BF size trays. It'd be awesome if you'd do a Cygnar P.A.C.K. 432 and just try and fit one of every model/unit and maybe two of a couple (like Lancers). I'd totally go for something like that. Plus I'd like to see some more generic cuts, even if you just take pictures of customs you've done before you send them out and post them on the website.

    Dam you Battlefoam.

After spending about $90 on my own mini transport system involving many hours of putting magnets inside bases and using 12x18 metal tool boxes (magnets means they don’t move and no foam), you made me spend $150 on your P.A.C.K. 432. Thanks a lot, you could have done this last year and saved me the time, trouble, and monies.

Seriously though. I emailed Romeo yesterday; he got back to me right away. I ordered the P.A.C.K. 432 and he’s even bringing my bag to Adepticon so I avoid the shipping. Love your product and I think battle foam will be the gold standard in figure transport for the foreseeable future.

Just received my "Heavy Weapons" foam for my Imperial Guard, and I had to come on here to sing the praises of Battlefoam. This stuff feels durable and hearty, without being too stiff for the models. I love it.

My only beef is that I ordered it for a GW army case, and it leaves about 1" of space on either side. This is a terribly minor thing that was easily corrected with the extra spacers I had after storing my sentinels. Then I realized I can store my sentinels properly, at long last, and I gushed.

After the Guard release I'll be looking to order a bunch of custom foam to fill up all my army cases. Maybe a PACK or two...

    Keep up the good work!

is that 1" on the sides or top and bottom (top being the hinge and bottom being the clasp side)? i'm thinking about getting these for my guardsmen but i'm not sure how many comfortably fit in a gw case. i'd have to agree with the owner that the current website is not as ecommerce friendly as it could be. how many of the 1" trays (or technically 1 1/4" trays with the bottom spacer) can you fit in a gw hard case?

edit: i sent them an email from their website. i'll update my own post with the answers.

Well, I'm using the big GW Army Case with GW infantry foam in the other half. With the Battlefoam neatly pressed against the 'top' (side with the hinges), and the outer 'side', there is 1" of space between the battlefoam and the GW foam, and between the battlefoam and the 'bottom' of the case with the clasps.

But the non-slip bottom makes it very hard to shift, so even without the spacers crammed in there for support I'd feel confident carrying it around as is.

For the HW/Sentinel foam it appears there's just the right amount of space for some eggshell foam to top it off (A good idea if you have antennas sticking out, as the Armaggedon Pattern Sentinels do on mine). But you can actually fit a whole extra tray of GW infantry foam with topper in there too, if you're comfortable with putting a slight squeeze on your foam/models when you clasp the case.

i'll have to think about it in that case. i could understand wanting to be different and avoiding GW's lawyer attack dogs but IMHO that could have been done by making one dimension smaller. i could always put the tape measure, templates, AOBR rulebook, and dice in a ziploc bag on one side if it has an inch of extra space there. having the other loosy goosy doesn't have any benefit.

can you (or anyone who has both) take a side by side pick of the battlefoam infantry foam (10x5 slots) next to the GW hardcase equivalent? it would be much appreciated.

    Hi Guys,

Cyporiean - Well, lets just say that santa's little elves are all working at Battle Foam righ now. Luckly for us they take cookies as payment.

Adepticon went better then any of us could have imagined. You guys not only make the hobby awesome, but you make me and the whole team at Battle Foam work that much harder for ya.

I have never been around a bunch of nicer people. Everyone came up to our booth and said hi and thanks for the foam. It was really unbelievable.

We are working 24 hours a day right now to get all the bags and foam out by the 15th. We really hope everyone like their stuff and hope we can help in the future.

I'm so grateful to you guys for making this dream come true for us and for letting our small company serve your hobby needs.

Looking forward to an awesome year.

    Thanks

Sorry for not being on here the past few weeks. We have just been slammed getting all the bags out for tomorrows release.

The good news is that all Bags, Foam, and Load Outs are finished, boxed and on the FedEx truck. Everyone will get their bags as advertised. Thanks again to all the support, and please let me or any of our guys know if we can help in any way.

    Hi Romeo.

I am unfortunately from England, which makes ordering more difficult as you know. I will be sending you a letter with details of what I need doing for my army, but just need the full adress so it gets to you from England. Once my first case is made and I have received it I can gaurantee that loads of people from my gaming group will want some so you will be receiving lots more orders!

So could you please either reply on here with the adress to send letters to or PM me. I have looked on youre website under contact, but wasnt sure if the details on there were 100% everything I needed to send from the UK.

As soon as I hear from you, we can start the ball rolling. Then hopefully i can get you more advertising in the UK as I attend a lot of the shows in the UK!

    Keep up the great work!

Ok, just got my PACK 1520 in the mail today and I have to say that for the most part I'm very impressed with the bag. The downside however is that the top bag just doesn't seem to provide a good fit for GW sized Battlefoam trays. See the pics below to see what I mean:

Am I just doing this wrong?

    Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/04/18 19:41:59

    Post by: Battle Foam

Makov - Lord Solaar is completely right. The GW foam does not fit correctly in our bags because it is not designed for our bags. The GW foam is 12" x 10" and our foam trays are 15.5" x 12". As you also may have noticed our troop trays for the P.A.C.K. system fits 72 troops when the GW only fits 50.

This will make better sense when the new Battle Foam site goes up early next week. We are adding all of the new trays for the bags so you will be able to order individual trays or package deals.

Makov - please call us if you have any other questions or concerns. We are here to help.

There's also an even smaller pack offered now, I forget the exact amount but it's a 200+ pack, around 240 or something.

I didn't think it was worth the high cost until I realized that the case had rigid sides. Not sure if it's actually hard shell, but it is rigid enough to stand up on its own.

I'll be buying the 1520 with a 432 loadout of Ork stuff, this way I can buy extra foam later on, no need to buy everything at once.

Unfortunately, it's also looking like you can't buy the $200 preorders for the 1520 with a full load out anymore.

    Product Review: Battle Foam @ 2009/04/22 03:53:59

Lord Solaar - We have some new deals that will come out from time to time, but the Pre Load Outs are gone for now. I don't really see them coming back anytime soon because of the margins for us. They are very hard to produce and take a whole lot of time. We still sell the load outs, but they are priced a bit higher. Also look for the bags to start being sold at a discounted price filled with the new pluck and pick foam.

The new pluck and pick is a better foam and will last longer then the stuff that is currently out there. We will have those available on the site in just a few days. Look for those to get you started with the bag line and then you can order trays as needed.

Many more changes to come to the site in the next few weeks so hang in there for a few days.

    Hi Guys,

I've read that Battlefoam's sabol-sized trays don't quite fit into Sabol's Motor Pool case.

I was curious, would the Battlefoam-sized trays fit? The measurements (between 1 battlefoam tray vs 2 sabol trays) look kind of similar. but i don't have anything to compare it myself. If anyone can tell me, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Grubb - We have acutally addressed that situation. Originally we felt that having the same sized trays would be some kind of IP issue, but that has now been addressed. If you notice we have adjusted the tray sizes on our website to read the exact size of Sabol trays. 13 x 7.5 instead of our old size 13 x 8. With this change all trays should fit perfectly. If you have any other questions, just give us a call or email us. Looking forward to your order.

A thing I suddenly found myself wondering is that I ordered new case from KR, and they use 15 by 10 inch trays. So my question is, would Battlefoam be able to cut trays with a custom footprint? The alternative would be using GW sized trays and a 1.5 inch of padding, which should not be too bad.

Was talking to my LGS today about getting some Stargate and Infinity stuff, and we noticed your already listed on Warpath.

Fist off, Congrats It can be a real pain to get through the wholesale distribution process.

Secondly, since your listed on Warpath, I'll be picking up my case through said LGS now. And Once I get it, I'll be sure to give my recommendation to Premiere.

Thirdly, Since Warpath is listing a both empty and full case, what will the full cases be full of? Pluck and Pick?

Fourthly, I bought nine Valkyries yesterday... so an Airborne Guard Foam set would be realllllllly helpful.

I have the PAK 1520 with the marine load-out and generally love it. Thought about posting a review, but to save time I'll just tack on a few points here. The foam is generally great quality, and I give the product a thumbs up, but here are a few points to note if you are looking at the PAK 1520:

    * The backpack has poor ergonomics and is top heavy; it cuts into my spine when I wear it fully loaded and feels very awkward. It is also very difficult to get off as the top handle is not easily reachable. Your mileage may vary depending on your height.
    * I really wish there were some pouch-style pockets on this bag. All of the pockets are "folder-style" and are great for books, but if you want to put in dice boxes, tape-measures, or anything square and/or slightly bulky will not fit well. I also wish there was a water-bottle holder and slots for pencils or pens

A few points specific to the marine load-out:

*The generic marine trays are a little shallow; they work for troops with bolters but if you have a special weapon it might not fit. Assault Marines with or without jump packs will not fit, so if you have a lot of them you're better off with the terminator/assault marine tray
*Vindicators have not really been considered well in the generic foam-load-out. The only slot they fit into is the Land-Raider slot, and then there's no place to put your Land-Raider.

All in all, however, I am happy with the purchase. I just see room for improvement.

    AX

    Post by: Battle Foam

    Hello Guys,

Axabrax - You make some good points, but let me explain. The back pack is not really ment to be carried long distances. After all it is a big square box with shoulder straps. What it is ment to do is get you from your car to your gaming center. Get you from the airport to the car and so on. By no means did we design it to feel or be used like a normal back pack. If we did, it would take so much away from what the 1520 can carry.

You also made some points for water-bottle holder, pencils, pens, and larger items. We tought of all of these features, but they added weight. This is something you mentioned in the post as not being something you liked. If we had all those added features it would only cause the bag to be bulkier and weigh more then it does now. Our design took into account weight vs. carring capacity. We tried to maximize the amount of items carried without making it to over weight. Compared to the GW larger hard case the 1520 is lighter and fits 6 X more items.

Now about the foam. Please keep in mind that we make a general foam size to appeal to the masses. Some Space Marine players model their troops with bolters, some with chain swords, some with....... By making a general tray we try and cover the bases on most peoples needs. Please always remember that if your army is different or has some extra needs, we are here to help. Our custom trays can easily be created to fit everything you have just the way you like it. Also, please not that all tray sizes and cut out sizes are clearly posted on the site. Anything you have questions about before ordering can always be addressed by myself or anyone of our staff members. After all, this is what we do. We are here to help you create the perfect setup for your army.

Great point on the Vindicator. We have addressed this issue and have changed all trasy to fit the extra 1/8 inch to 1/4 difference. In the older trays the Vindicators do fit but cause the outer edges of the foam to push out a bit.

AX - you are now part of the Battle Foam family and we strive to treat each and every one of you guys with the upmost respect. You opinion is highly valued and we respect everyones ideas and points. Please let me or anyone of us know if you have any problems with your trays and we will do our best to fix or replace it. If that Vindicator is giving you problems, just give me a call and we'll take care of it. If we don't outright replace it, I'm sure we can get you a smoking deal on a replacement so everything you have fits perfect.

Looking forward to working with you in the future.

Hello MunkeyKungFu - We mark all packages as Gifts so custom charges do not apply. I have not heard anyone from the UK run into any problems. Please check your local postage company for specifics, but you should be ok.

Napalm - Please note that Leman trays are 3" unless specified by the customer. Normal Lemans without guardsmen sticking out the top fit fine. If you have crewman or large things sticking out of the top of your tanks you may want to go larger.

Hope this helps guys, and please remember we are here to help. No question is stupid and its always better to be safe then sorry. Call, email, or text us and we will help you with just about anything. Don't guess on something just to find out it did not work or did not fit.

Looking forward to working with all of you.

P.S. We have a very big announcement to make for June 1st. Please stay glued to Dakka for more information. The new announcment should help everyone that has considered buying one of our bags. Can't wait!!!!!

After waiting for my bag like a greedy, bratty child with anxiety waits for Christmas, it finally arrived today. I got out all of my current means of army transportation/cases, and promptly fillet my 1500 bag in about half an hour. I love the bag, it is everything i need/expected/wanted. Only thing is, I have so many models, I need another.

I really love the Chaos SM/Daemons troop tray. but wish it was deeper than 1 inch. I called for an 1&1/2 inch custom try, but you only make them avalible in whole inch increments. No problem, 2" will do, but 1/2 inch increments would be great too.

Also, I thought that I saw a Necron destroyer tray for BF the other day, but I can't find it on the website today. Was I mistaken, is there no BF Necron Destroyer tray? Can you make one?

Anyways, great product, I look forward to placing my second and subsequent orders. Cheers!

Gotta say at the start this Battle Foam is really impressing me! So after ordering the rest of my Deathwing I am looking for some efficient way to store / carry my models and because I play Deathwing and normally have around 17 models + 3 Landraiders (maybe 2 dreds) I don't really need a massive case.

Would the P.A.C.K 216 Custom Load Out be a good idea for me? I would probably want the space for around 20 Terminators 3 Landraiders and 2 Dreadnoughts at the most, would this fit inside that bag?

I am currently shopping around for a new case to carry a 2000pt IG army. The 432 video says it was designed to carry 1750-2000, but since I am running mech I think I may have to go 1500, which would have to wait. I will eventually have ~40-50 Vets, +5 more for CCS, so probably want room for 60 models for wiggle room. I will also have 3-5 Chimeras, 2-4 Vendettas and Valks, 1-4 Russes, and 2 banewolves.

What kind of case would I be looking at here?

    Hi Guys,

Apwill4765 - I would totally suggest going with the 1520. Its to only bag on the market that can hold as many models as you mention in one case. The Valks and Vendetttas are large models that don't like to fit in normal bags. The 1520 can handle them and just about everything you just mentioned. Take a minute and watch video on our site and see what you think. Also, don't forget that you could always call in and ask questions. We will be more then happy to help you figure out the best bang for your buck.

So what's the word on the seams on these bags? That's a big thing I look for with any bag. Many times I've had bags fail on me from the load bearing seams and stitches that attach the main carrying strap to the bag, this cascades into a total failure of the outside.

What stinks is that it takes time for such problems to show up.

While I have no doubt that despite the cost, the carrying capacity and foam trays are worth it, the seams are where it's at for me.

Yep, the penalties can be quite hefty too. Also worth noting that the recipient is liable even if they did not request the item to sent as a gift. It is their responsibility to make sure the Sender don't make a false declaration .

At the end of the day you will be relying on the fact that not every package can be inspected on arrival in the UK due to manpower but I have no idea what the odds are.

    Hi Romeo,

I'm interested in getting one of your PACK1520 cases; can you tell me how tall each of the two sections (upper and lower)? I see that it's 15"L x 12"W x 20"T, but the "T" is split into two sections and I can't find the section heights anywhere on your website.

    Thanks,

Why shouldn't I? If I get in a bike accident, I'm pretty sure that the state of the miniatures will be the least of my concerns. To keep things in perspective, at any time I may have, maybe, $1k worth of figs on the bike. The bike's worth $20k. My head is irreplaceable. If I'm willing to risk my bike and my head, I'm willing to risk my figs.

For some reason what you said made me smile to myself. You are indeed a man w/ irrefutable logic.
