So, I found this old tank toy in my attic a little while ago and the first thing that popped in my head when I saw it was "OMG LEVIATHAN!". I got a lot of other projects out of the way first, now it's time to begin! The Apocalypse rules for this thing can be found on the Bell of Lost Souls Lords of Battle PDF.

So here's the tank I'm using as the base for my Leviathan. It measures 8"x14". There's a baneblade and predator for size comparisons..

It opens up into this funky command center thing..

So I took off all the pieces and made it just the bottom and tracks

Now with all of those pieces gone I have a nice base to build onto. I will probably save that turret thing for the very top at the end, we'll see. First, I'm going to build the side turrets, with 3 twinlinked lascannons and 4 twinlinked heavy bolters.

I'm using some panels from the COD Manufactorum to build the lascannon towers. The middle heavy bolters will come up higher, about half way up the tower, and the side bolters will be about 1/4 of the way up. I was also thinking of shortening the left and right towers a bit, sawing them off just above those pipes that go along the bottom of the panels. The middle guns are from Razorback sprues, the side guns are predator sponsons glued together. I ordered a few of those Land Raider Terminus upgrade packs to get all the turrets

I'm gonna start by building each tower and turret separately, then stick them all together. More to come

This is gonna be awesome!! Do the tracks on that toy tank look good? I couldn't see them in the pics.

ps. Is it a micromachines toy?

I dunno what it was from. It must have been one of my cousin's old toys that somehow got stashed at my house. I think it was more for matchbox cars and stuff like that.

The treads are really big, not a lot of detail but it will be passable enough. I've been working on the lascannon towers and kinda drawing blanks trying to figure out the best way. I think what I'll have to do is use a long piece of poster board for the back wall / side of the tank to attach them to instead of trying to build each tower as a separate piece. I may have to go get another box of manufactorum pieces too.. I also have the church window pieces that will be the walls for the 2nd level, and I may need a 2nd box of them. Hmm... it might be cheaper just to buy that whole city box set

Ironic, I started t his today just when BOLS posted this article

Didn't really think about the storage issue, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it

Got a lot done today. I decided the best way to do this would be just using as much of the COD terrain as I could, so I ran out to the store and bought 3 more boxes of building pieces in addition to the 2 I had. This should give me all the panels I need, I hope.

I got the left hand lower level wall done and have to build the same thing for the other side.

Took a while to figure out the best way to do it. I ended up having to saw off a bunch of corner pieces since I wanted the rivets to all face out.. then I accentally shaved off the rivets of the wrong pieces which is why there's none on the 2 side lascannon towers :( Here's some more shots of the wall section on top of the wheels. Dunno if you can see on the ruler but the whole thing is 14 inches long so, it'll take a guardsman 2 whole turns to get from the front to the back, if he runs

So next I'll have to build the 2nd wall and then figure out how I want to join them in the middle...

Lords of battle is brilliant, it inspired me to build a knight paladin.

I'm curious to see how this will evolve, but it lokks like you have a solid base witht he toy tank, and the COD pieces seem quite appropriate. I'll be following this one with interest .

It looks great...keep it going! I can't wait to see it complete and with the turret on.

Have you had any thoughts on how you'll do an access ramp? you're meant to be able to fit in sentinals and stuff. can you fit tanks in it too?

I'll see, I should be able to fit a valk on there. I'm hoping I can. But I have to wait till the model comes out so I'll know how big it is exactly. I can always make the 2nd floor's roof a little wider so it can fit

Moving right along... Got the wall for the other side done and the celling mapped out in poster board for now. Next I'll be working on the front section and cannon housing

Got some more done. I joined the 2 wall sections now, in the front is the cannon housing with a piece of PCV pipe that I'll be using for the Doomsday cannon. Just stuck it on with blue stuff for now as a placeholder to show how it will look. On the back there's the big garage door. The tank toy comes with it's own little access ramp so I'm going to design it to look like the bottom half will come down like a ramp, and the top half will open up. I'll be adding a lot of extra plasticard bitz here to make hinges and pistons and other stuff, just getting the shape down now.

Next I will be getting some plastic rods to brace the insides and add them along the tops of the walls like support beams, to kinda hold the celling on so that I can build up the next level later on, and also make sure the inner walls are all the same width and not warped or anything.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/05 15:36:43

Post by: CommissarKhaine

Looking good. I would consider angling the doomsday cannon up a bit though, but I guess that's just a WIP thingy. Will the doors be able to open for real?

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/05 15:50:51

Post by: Necros

Yes I will probably angle the cannon slightly. I just stuck it on there with some blu tack to show the size. I might also make it a little shorter.

The door won't open, I was just going to add decorative pieces to the surface to make it look like it's got hinges and stuff and a seam down the middle. I wanted that back piece to be solid because the rear walls aren't all perfect 90 degree angles and it was warping in the back a lot, so I wanted that piece to hold it all together. thats also why I want to add those beams across the inside, for support since this lower level will have to hold the weight of 2 other levels and I don't want it to look like it's sinking in the middle. the next level up will be not as wide, this bottom level the front is around 3.5 pannels wide, the next level will be 3 pannels wide, then 2 pannels wide for the very top turret housing & bridge.

Leviathan FTW!!!

Very cool scratchbuild/kitbash/thing.

Your kung fu is strong.

I like how the panels aren't in line. The inserts give the model lots of character. Very inspirational.

Post by: Necros

thanks, I'm also thinking about keeping it hollow till the very end and removing the card backing that I added to the church windows, and then when it's all painted I'll try and photoshop up some stained glass looking patterns and print on photo paper to glue in behind them. might be kind of a paint to get in there though when it's all built.

anyway I'm gonna add the support bitz and then set aside these walls and work on adding the armor, etc around the wheels and building out the bottom part. I just hit the hobby store and stocked up on lots of plasticard

im loving this alot, great idea, and a great way of making it all work.
only suggestion i would have would be with the DD cannon.

it might be worth making it somewhat like the bassy mount, having a slit in the center so the cannon can arc up and down.
also, might be worth making it a little bigger, as it looks pretty stubby so far.

hehe, yeah it was just some toy I found. no idea where it came from. I think it was some kind of matchbox/hot wheels play center shaped like a tank. If you're looking to do a similar project I'm sure any large sized tank toy would work well.

With all that room in the middle, perhaps you could use it to actually carry some troops, you just need a removable roof and some cut down foam inserts. I like the intensely gothic look of it, so many scratch-built superheavies tend to look really plain. Can't wait to see more.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/05 22:50:54

Post by: JD21290

just an idea to follow on from warps post.

if you want troops in it, and a nice gothic feel to it then cake decorating shops sell plastic pillars, very gothic looking, and very cheap, they have a hole from top to bottom, meaning you can use a pin system on the roof to connect it on.
that way it can be taken off when needed, keeps the top section in place at all times, and keeps the whole design together.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/05 23:49:34

Plus it'd be good support. I really like the look of the whole model so far! It's much more 40k than the old epic leviathan. That just looked like a squat vehicle!

Keep up the good work.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/06 22:00:11

Post by: Necros

I think the old epic one WAS a squat vehicle but I might be wrong.

Anyway here's another update. Been spending a while making the inside stronger with some beams going across the top inside and then adding some armor plating going around the lower part for the walls to sit on top of. Going ot be working on this lower part for a while now and adding some armor plates with rivets and all that stuff.

Now I'm starting to wonder about what to do with the rear access ramp. Here it is with the toy tank's ramp closed...

And here it is opened with some men coming out for scale..

They seem to fit pretty good. In the stats for this thing, its supposed to transport sentinels so you'd think the door would be bigger. I don't own any sentinels and don't plan to get any, so I'm wondering if I should just leave the ramp like that? And then, for that big garage door I was planning above it instead I would model engine things there, pipes, smoke stacks, cables, fuel drums, etc. Wadayas think?

You should make the rear a giant boarding ramp. The Leviathan could carry tanks in its hold... some variants had a Battle cannon / Vanquisher turret at the top-front chassis above that giant cannon mounted in the hull... guess the command deck is right underneath it...

the Collosus has the heli pad on top...the Levi doesn't...

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/07 14:28:29

Post by: Necros

Yeah I was planning to have the top cannon, in the datasheet I think it's just a regular russ battle cannon but I'm going to use a baneblade turret but I might change the barrel and use the shadowsword barrel since I will be getting that new kit to build a stormlord, and if I don't get that I'm sure someone I know will be. Plus the fella that runs my local shop said he'd donate some bitz if he has them, probably because he keeps selling out of COD terrain thanks to me

I think I am going to change mine slightly, instead of the traditional Leviathan I'm going to remove the sentinel carrying capacity so the innards will have room to store a lot of ammo, for the Hydra turret that's gonna go on the back I'm going to order the FW hydra platform. I'm just not sure if I want the regular hydra platform (pic) since I won't really be able to use the bitz for the "legs", or the 2 barreled Phaeton pattern one (pic .. I'm guessing if I go with the Phaeton one the whole thing should fit on there. But I like the 4 barrel look of the hydra turret better.

Anyway, I decided to get rid of that giant garage door I was building and just go with the already built in ramp the toy came with and there will be engine components there. I bitz ordered 2 dreadnought power packs with the smoke stacks from the warstore and I think when I get that FW turret I will also order their little power generator and stick that on the back too.

edit: actually, looking at the FW site, a better and cheaper way is to just get the hydra tank conversion kit for the turret, then I don't have any wasted parts

This is gonna be great. Your assault ramp is great. You could add some heavy bolter turrets at the back if you want, to give the boys some covering fire when they disembark?!

Hydra guns sounds great. It's gonna be an immense centrepiece for your guard. Do you have a general to command from it? you need to make up a special character for that momma.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/10 03:59:26

Post by: Necros

Yes my general and his inquisitor buddy will be riding in there, along with 50 bodyguards

Got a little more done. Added some armor plates along the side, never thought rivets could be so tedious I hope to not add many more... The walls are now permanently attached to the body and the middle lasgun tower is done along with the 2 bottom heavy bolter turrets next to that. They're removable right now though, I will probably paint them separately in the end so it will be easier to paint the walls without the little guns all in the way.

Time to start level 2

At first I was going to make it 3 panels wide instead of 2, but I like the big double door for the front porch, and now I have room for those arch thingies that will go down the side. So the 2nd floor will be 2 wide 8 deep.

I want to get this part all done in time for when the Shadowsword/Stormlord is released. I want to make the top battle cannon turret out of the shadowsword cannon & housing, and then I'll just use the baneblade body as a regular baneblade. Gonna order the regular baneblade turret from the warstore, instead of waiting for them to start selling the shadowsword turret frames since they might charge a lot for them at first.

Why don't you go get some textured Plasticard that will allow you to simulate a retractable door above the ramp, or score the plasticard and create false hinges and doors in the plasticard?

yeah I saw that one I like the look of the baneblade tracks, but I'm really only doing this because of that tank toy, I doubt I would have wanted to build one at all if it wasn't for that. His is a more "traditional" look i guess. I'm just making mine up as I go I wanted mine to seem more like a rolling fortress instead of a giant tank thats why I used all the COD pannels for it.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/12 14:09:43

Post by: JD21290

I haven't thought of a name yet My army is called the Stormguard, the planetary defense force for my marine chapter Knights of the Stormrider. Their homeworld is sort of near Cadia & the eye and they're a very anti-chaos army.

I'm basing it on the Bell of lost Souls datasheet. Theirs is 1400 pts and has 6 TL lascannons, 8 TL heavy bolters, doomsday cannon, battle cannon and transport for 50 humans, 25 ogryns or 10 sentines.

I was going to call it a Stormguard pattern leviathan. I will just have it able to transport humans as I don't have any ogryns or sentinels and if I did I doubt I'd want them in there, and I'm imagining that will make room for extra ammo, etc, for the Hyrda turret that will be on the top in the rear section. The front will be a shadowsword cannon & the housing from the new kit, but made as a spinning turret on the front top, and it was just going to be for looks and count as the regular battle cannon. Or, should I have that fixed and not able to spin and have it as a real shadowsword cannon? Or I could use anything else from that kit, maybe the vulcan megabolters from the stormlord instead? No idea how to adjust the cost though... 1400 pts minus carrying bigger models plus hydra & top big gun = ??

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/13 11:12:21

Post by: CaptainRavenclaw

When you're in games of that scale the points don't matter just as much. You could round it up to 1500? or just add the points for a hydra on to it and say that you're transporting it!

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/13 12:52:21

Post by: Necros

True

I think I'm going to go with the stormlord vulcan megabolter for the top turret instead of the battle cannon Then I'll have the hydra turret on the very back behind it. Just ordered that last night. I'm hoping to get it all built by March 8th for a megabattle at my local store. Painting it is another matter...

I got the side walls for the 2nd floor all built and a roof on top. Gonna add those side arch thingies tonight all around and then I'll take some new pics

next I will be getting the rest of the side guns finished. Waiting for a few more bitz to arrive before I can finish the engine parts in the back. I also just ordered the hydra turret for the back. hopefully forge world won't be too slow

What's the plan for the turret?

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/15 14:50:01

Post by: Necros

This will be it for the main floors. Above this in the front I will have a command deck that will be a 2x2 wall section but I will probably cut that short so it doesn't just look like a big tower, then the turret on top of that. Then behind the command deck at the back i'll have a hydra turret. I had some ideas to use the new shadowsword kit to make the top turret but I think I'm going to just use a baneblade cannon.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/15 19:48:31

Post by: Necros

I finished all of the side turrets now

The 3 middle turrets are Razorback guns, the other 4 are from predator sponsons just gluing the single weapon for each sponson together to make it look like 1 twinlinked gun, and added some plasticard and other bitz.

To add to the tank I used some plastic rod attached to an armor plate and a smaller rod under the gun so it makes a little socket that will allow it to spin around, but still keep it in place. I will probably stick some blue tac in the hole to keep it snug so they don't fall off when I play but that will be after I paint it.

Someone had asked for a pic with some figures for scale, so here ya go. I should be able to fit a 5 man command squad on that front porch

Now I want to start working on the next floor above. I used some blue tack to stick some spare wall pieces together. But I don't know if I like it. It just feels too tall. I want this part to be like a bridge/command deck, and a baneblade cannon on top of it. So, I think I may have to scratch build something to make it more tank-looking, maybe going up on an angle like a bunker. Then behind the top floor on the back will be the hydra turret

Yeah your right it looks way too tall...maybe cut it in half? or just cut off the area above the window? that the smaller section above the bigger open section...that should help, or nip a little off both ends

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/15 20:03:42

Post by: Necros

yeah I think I want it to be shaped like the housing on the shadowsword cannon. So I may just scratchbuild something like that, maybe about half the height of the regular wall panels, and the baneblade cannon attached to the front of that.

Or... go back to my other idea of the shadowsword cannon there, and I could use some plasticard to look like there's windows on that, or just view slits in it?

Wow. This is a real masterpiece Necros. I have seen some giant tank conversions, but this one takes the cake.

So...are there rules to fight on top of vehicles? Because I have a bunch of Kommandos who would love to exchange a few words with the HQ squad on the balcony

I was thinking about that. i though it would be cool if i could have men shooting out the windows and stuff but I think the best way would be to just have it count as open topped if someone is outside.

Maybe you could use the floor tiles to build up the base for the turret.

Wonderful stuff, but you already know that.

not too sure what your doing with the 2nd floor yet, but you could run the 3rd down to the 2nd on a slope to add shape to it, might help with the whole height look aswell.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/16 11:31:33

Post by: Sirius42

Have you thought about trimming the top floor down so that its closer to the height of a man sized model, might make it a little less top heavy and more tanky, then you could match up the top of the baneblade turret with the top of the hydra turret? looks awesome so far either way.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/16 13:28:18

Post by: Wehrkind

Wow, I can't believe I hadn't seen this yet... must have assumed it was some sort of tyranid thing. Instead, it is full on Imperial awesome!

I agree with the idea of the stormlord superstructure for the big turret. I think it is really easy to make these sorts of projects overly tall for their foot print, giving the impression that they will fall over if they roll over a bump. Something a little more lean and low for the gun on top will help get around that, especuially since it is already what, 45' tall in scale?

The rules for this thing are in the bell of lost souls lords of battle pdf..

http://belloflostsouls.blogspot.com/2008/09/play-aid-lords-of-battle-v20.html

I will be editing it for mine and adding 100 pts for the hydra turret so it'll be 1500 for me

I was messing with the floor tiles yesterday and they are actually the perfect height, so I think I may try something like that. I was going to use the shadowsword for it but I think I wanna save a little cash since I also have some lizardmen stuff to buy and about 27 valkyries when they come out cuz they look so cool. So, I think I'm going to scratch build a command deck that looks a lot like the shadowsword top, and then just order a baneblade cannon sprue and mount that on top.

I was working on the rear engine parts last night, just gotta get my land raider bitz shipment hopefully today and then I'll have that part done.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/16 19:40:44

Post by: Llamahead

It's brilliant, you thought of adding a pulpit like the Fortress of Arrogance? Also I'd be tempted to scratch the 3rd floor altogether. It may look better without it.

Post by: Necros

I actually thought about skipping the top too, and having some windows or view ports along the bottom but I think for something like this you really need a bridge up top like a battleship. There's also supposed to be a little tower on the back but I'm changing that to the hydra turret. I'm going to keep the bridge smaller, about 2" or 2.5" high. I have some rhino & land raider inside control panel bitz left over so I'm starting to think I might try and give the bridge windows so you can see inside. Haven't decided yet .. might be a little too much

haven't done much the last few days and won't for a few more. Just waiting for some bitz to arrive and my FW shipment with the Hydra so I will know how big to make the front command area.

So right now I'm just getting some lizardman stuff built. That new stegadon has been a lot of fun to build

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/21 01:50:36

Post by: Necros

Well some more bitz arrived today so I was able to finish the rear engine area.

I'll add some other little bitz here and there but that's basically how it'll look. Gonna take a break for a few, until my FW hydra arrives so I can add that and once I can see how big that will be, I'll start on the front top command deck / bridge. I just placed the order a week ago so it might be a little while till it comes

What are those bits for the engine bitz on the back.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/21 04:52:19

Post by: Necros

It's 2 dreadnought backs with the exhausts, 1 land raider exhaust, baneblade exhausts for those little double-pipes next to the laid raider bit. The gas tanks were from the baneblade and the little vent things at the bottom were cut off of the rhino roof bit that the predator turret goes on.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/21 09:22:33

Post by: jep'ray

I think it is a shame you can't see the tank tracks properly now. It is probably too late, but if you could raise the main part slightly to allow better sight of the tracks I think it would be better.

Doesn't the Leviathan carry infantry and vehicles? I thought the ramp was in the back.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/21 14:30:04

Post by: Necros

It does have a ramp, under the engine. There's a pic of that on page 2. i'm going to have mine just be a troop transport, no sentinels, so it doesn't need the bigger door

for the command deck, I'm gonna wait for the shadowsword to come out and I will use the top of that that the cannon attaches to if it fits good. Based on my baneblade and some pics I've seen I did some measuring and that whole piece should be pretty much exactly as wide as the top section. If it doesn't fit, I'll just build my own but something that looks similar

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/22 23:30:24

Post by: CaptainRavenclaw

Painting it could be fun. You could get a bunch of guys over to help you with it. There'll be more than enough room around the model to have a few painters. Or get an airbrush kit and a bucket of paint!

The latest additions look great. I hope Royal Mail doesn't keep you waiting for too long. Bring on the Hydra!!

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/23 00:49:52

Post by: Necros

Actually for painting I was just going to get some gray primer spray and spray the whole thing, then paint up the gold and metal spots, then use wood stain like you would use to dip stuff, only paint it on. That'll get all the shading and stuff done quick & easy. There's a lot of little details though. But all of the guns I will keep removable at first so I can paint them separately.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/02/24 16:18:53

No word on the hydra. FW just kind of sends stuff when they get around to it so I'm not expecting it for at least another week, but who knows I might get lucky. I will also have to wait till the end of next week to get my shadowsword kit too. Hopefully I'll get both right around the same time

I'm hoping I can get my stegadon all done in the meantime

No it's more like an imperial guard regimental HQ transport. It would usually carry the general(s) and the advisors plus a few squads to make up their personal defense force. The info and stats for it are on the very first post in the link to the lords of battle PDF

When I use it in games it will carry my army's HQ command squad plus 40 stormtroopers or maybe 20 troopers and 10 ogryns.

ugh.. price.. let's see.. it wasn't all in one big purchase I did it over the span of about 6 months...

razorback & predator sponson sprues (4 land raider terminus upgrade packs from GW + 2 more razorback sprues from Bitkingdom) for all the side guns were around $90. I have a lot of extra guns left over that I will be using to build other little projects too.

5 boxes of cities of death buildings for all the walls... $125. Extra stuff will go toward building terrain

ordered the dreadnought & land raider engine bitz for around $20

FW hydra turret for the back that still hasn't come $38

extra baneblade turret sprues to swap for shadowsword turret $34

yuck :(

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/04 04:24:19

Post by: Masaioh

Wow, that's less expensive than the warhound at 2x the points, and you're almost done!

Right?

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/04 13:58:42

hehe yeah kind of almost done. I just want to get the rest of the parts I need and I have some other little details I want to add. Actually I could probably start painting the bottom half but I have some other projects I'm working on while I wait. working on a brand new lizardman army

if FW made a leviathan it would prolly be about $700

I have plans for the other leftover bitz too, I'll be building a lot of terrain with what's left of the COD boxes and with the leftover heavy bolters and lascannon bitz I'll be doing some HW team conversions for my guard or possibly scratch building some tarantulas or some fortress style terrain with some guns on it. so it'll all go to good use

Lookie what was waiting for me when I got home today

hydra turret plus the extra hellhound. But, the barrels on the turret are bent :( I'm gonna try running it under hot tap water and hopefully that will make it soft enough to bend back and make it straight. Tomorrow or friday I'll be getting the shadowsword, then I'll have all I need

But, I gotta finish up my Stegadon first. hopefully tonight...

Hi Necros

On some recent Forgeworld items I had great success plunging the bent items in to just boiled water for about 10-30 seconds (depending on thickness). Once I'd removed them and straightened them I plunged them into cold water to keep their new shape. It's a system that has worked so far for me. Hope this helps if you haven't tried it before.

Looking forward to the next update.

Cheers
Dave

Happy days!! I can't wait to see this momma take shape again. Stegadons are always getting in the way, but if your paintjob on that is anything to go by, this is gonna be a beautiful leviathan. Hope your bent piece turns straight!

So, got the hydra and the shadowsword. Built the shadowsword turret and attached the barrel with just some blue stuff for now. Also just placed the hydra on the back, I still have the fix the bent barrels and all that stuff. I'm thinking I might also add some of those railing pieces all along the top and I will have to use some plasticard to build up that empty space at the bottom of the shadowsword turret. I'm not sure if I like the extra long barrel on top though, so I'm wondering if maybe I should do the vulcan megabolter there instead?

here's a valks eye view and a grunts eye view

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/06 12:29:10

Post by: CaptainRavenclaw

It is beautiful.

Maybe the stormsword or the doomhammer guns might work better. They are shorter. But to have a vulkan mega bolter would be immense. It would make that Leviathan a real firebase!

Great pics necros, keep the project alive!!

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/06 12:32:49

Post by: Kid_Kyoto

Can you do something to make the inner barrel of the hull cannon a bit narrower? Fit a ring inside it maybe?

Right now it looks a bit too big, too much like a drainage pipe, even by GW standards.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/06 14:39:28

Post by: Necros

I want to add some view ports to either side of the gun barrel since this was also going to be like the command deck. I think I'm gonna just lose the big barrel for the shadowsword cannon. I'll try the vulcan megabolters but I might also try it as the banesword, stormsword or banebammer. Now that I know how big the pieces are for the turret and the hydra guns I can finish building the other stuff for the top floor

Also I think since there's those 2 extra heavy stubbers for the stormlord I might stick them on either side of the front porch

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/06 16:41:32

Post by: Death By Monkeys

I'm in the camp that thinks the long barrel on the shadowsword cannon looks weird with the silhouette. And I'm also with Kid_Kyoto on the main cannon looking a little like the opening to a culvert rather than a cannon. I think the front porch would look solid with some small arms - heavy stubbers/heavy bolters/stormbolters/etc. Looking fantastic, though!

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/06 16:58:10

Post by: Necros

Day off today I put the vulcan megabolter together (mostly). Here's a shot with it.

I think it's like the opposite of the shadowsword now.. seems too small, but the other was too big. Maybe I'll go with one of the other guns, like the stormsword, doomhammer or banehammer?

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/06 17:39:19

Post by: Death By Monkeys

Yep, too small now. The cowling almost completely hides the barrels from this angle.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/06 17:55:09

Post by: Lagduf

I liked the longer cannon, I actually didn't think it looked to funny. If you want something shorter then perhaps you can just trim the barrel down in length a bit?

crush the xenos. I like the way you did it. does the back open for guard tanks to enter.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/06 18:19:51

Post by: Necros

OK now I think I got it I took all of the smaller cannon bitz and stuck them together, so it's like half as long now but still lots of details

the back opens to let troops out. Leviathans can transport sentinels but this one won't The Capitol imperialis is the ginormous tank that can transport russes, I think it would be like 2x bigger than this is.

You know, he actually did manage to finish his tank about 30 hours ago, but then it turned out that the plastic bags he got his Forge World parts in, were actually filled with a deadly poison which threatned to wipe out the entire continent, unless he manages to save his Ex-Girlfriend who got captured by russian terrorists which were actually hired by a rogue agency of the united States government who were actually hired by....

sad thing is my girlfriend claims my weekend :( or at least my saturdays. Today was filled up with house hunting. But, I did manage to get the roof of level 2 done, and turretized the shadowsword roof thingy with some plastic tube and now it spins around

Next I have to add something to get the hydra mounted so that can spin properly too. Oh and I also fixed the bent hydra barrels, ran em under hot tap water and bent them straight also cleaned all the resin with simple green, including the new hellhound bitz.

I also built some more porch railings to go around the top behind the turret, but it was getting in the way of the hydra spinning, so I'm just gonna leave the top flat. I'll get some pics when I finish the hydra stuff .. just a day or so

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/03/10 02:03:27

Post by: Necros

I got everything built now. Here's a pic with the front turret in 2 directions to show how it spins

I think I'm pretty much done. I could keep going and going adding bitz all over the place but then I will never get around to painting it. I think I'm also going to leave the Doomsday cannon like it is. yeah it's massive and you can fit a whole space marine inside the barrel, but then every other tank in the game has obscenely large and out of proportion guns too. Besides, it has to be big enough to live up to a name like Doomsday Cannon.

I'm gonna paint it in stages, bottom hull, then top hull, then all the guns separately. It's gonna take a long time. I will probably take several breaks to work on some other projects while I paint it but I'll post pics of progress I want to get some more lizardmen done at the moment... I also have a baneblade & hellhound to build and paint.

That looks really great man. I am going to have to swing down to Philly one of these weekends to see the thing in person!

One thing I keep thinking though is that it needs something attached to the front. The squared off bumper that is shorter than the main gun makes it look a little over balanced forward a bit to me. I am thinking that a prow ram would go a long way towards balancing it out and making it a tad more elegant. Something along the lines of the Sisters of battle immolator style, with a gap in the middle of course to avoid covering your brass plate!

I suppose part of the issue is seeing such a large vehicle that doesn't look like a ship or a train in the front sort of throws me. Still, dead awesome over all!

For painting I'm going to use the army painter gray spray and paint the skulls and eagles and other bitz in gold and silver, then use the darkest Army Painter shader/stain. If I try to paint the whole thing by hand I will drive myself insane

I was thinking about building some kinda of massive dozer blade for it though. I will probably still try and do something different for the cannon too, we'll see. I built the thing so that I can remove the engines and guns and all that stuff so I can paint the body itself first, so I might feel like building a new gun later

Very cool. It's stuff like that which makes Apocalypse so interesting. You could play a scenario based on a bunch of Speed Freaks trying to loot it

Anung: That's an awesome idea... you and I need to hang out some time. You know, play some Game Cube, and just chill.

Necros is of course invited, provided there is a big dozer blade on that thing by week's end!

Also, Necros, to save you a little cash, you might try Rustoleum's light grey automotive primer. I get mine at Wal Mart, but you can definitely get it at like Lowe's or Home Depot. It is a very light grey, almost white, which covers very evenly. I used it on the Necros Pattern Battlewagon over a brown primer for rust (using the jelly rust spot method) and then just washed the whole tank with a brown and Payne's Grey mix (if I recall) to very nice results.

Results I need to post on Dakka, it occures to me.

hehe I will, but I will be mixing in the paint in stages between a lot of other things I have on deck like. 2 kroxigors, 3 razordons (w/ 9 skinks), 1 Carnasaur, 1 hellhound and 1 baneblade, then there will be new guard stuff coming soon too and I'll at least be getting a couple more boxes of men. So I don't expect to have this thing totally finished for a while :( sometime this summer maybe. My plan was to have it done in time for my club's big apocalypse game in November, so I'm already way ahead of schedule

Natty Ice, damnit! I was trying for like 15 minutes at work to remember the name of that swill. It has been a LONG time since that name was among the list of "things I might put in my mouth".

You mean this Natty Ice?

I'm a tequila man personally. never was into beer for some reason.

I'll probably bring it to a game at my local store long before november. I wanna try to get it painted sooner rather than later I just have a lot of other projects on deck :( I wanna at least get all the other stuff built, if it stays in boxes too long it may get forgotten about completely

Yea, the .15$ per can nasty beer like product that college kids can afford. I prefer whiskey + sugar myself to beer, and that stuff is much like what I piss out after a heavy night of drinking.

Haven't you ever seen the "Bro Rape" video Necros? Look it up on YouTube, it is hillarious.

Let me know when you are taking it somewhere. I want to see the beast in person! (Pssst. Take it to Games Day!)

This is back on my work bench! I have the whole thing primed now, all gray except the guns which are primed black. I plan to begin painting it over the next couple of days. I have to add a base coat of shadow gray to the body all over, which will then be washed black and then drybrushed space wolf gray, same way I did my baneblade and valkyrie. I'm gonna paint the whole thing in stages starting with the bottom section. I hope to have that basecoated and washed in the next couple of days then I get some pics.

I was going to paint the window areas just black, but I think now I want to do some custom decals with photoshop and make the windows look like stained glass. I'll probably just scan some color pics out of the rulebook and codex. But I'm also wondering if I should do custom decals, or print them out on photo paper and glue them in the windows so the colors will be real bright and shiny.

... It took me about Half an hour of reading all of the 6 Pages of this thread and looking over the fine details and hilarious comments. I downloaded the Lords of Battle book like you posted. I have yet to look through it. I am a little upset that I found this thread so late in the game. I would have loved to suggest a little Rail like system on the Turret roof, so that you could slide the Hydra Cannon Around just for flavor. And the Loading bay door, even though you do not want to carry sentinels I think it would look cool if the Loading Bay would open down and then open up. Kind of like the Front of a Land Raider.

However, all in all I find this amazing the CoD Walls and the Toy Tank and building this monstrosity from Scratch... it is just phenomenal. I cannot wait for you to paint this, just I would like you to take your time so that it looks good, so ignore the rushing "Paint it NOW" Posts. Patients pays off lol.

I do have one question though, are you going to model the inside of it?

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/08/25 19:32:35

Post by: Necros

Thanks

Unfortunately, I didn't plan ahead and also got a bit lazy when I was building it, so no it's not going to be able to open up and have an interior.

And yes it will take me a while to paint. I plan to do the whole bottom section, then take a break and do some other models, and then the upper floor, and then weapons last. I probably won't do anything with the windows till the very very end. Right now I'm leaning toward photo paper stained glass instead of decals for them.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/08/25 19:48:51

Post by: ZeinEizoku

For the Stained Glass, I am not sure how well this would work but you could use some Colored Acetate http://www.dickblick.com/products/grafix-clear-lay-assorted-colors/ But that is entirely up to you, it is your model it is just a suggestion.

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/08/25 20:07:28

Post by: Briancj

In my bitz box, I have pre-printed stained glass windows on plastic. If you go into military modelling stores, they may have them. Tricky to find online, but here's one example:

http://www.empirehobbies.com.au/images/ris35063.jpg

The ones I have fit COD windows pretty well.

NOTE: Unless you light up the interior, you really won't see the stained glass at all well!

Look forwards to seeing it painted!

Here are a few pics of the church my brother made a few years ago. He searched for different 40k pics, used a photoshop filter on them and then printed them on foil. The church was open on one side though, so there was a lot of light from the other side and you could see the pictures very clearly.

OK sorry for the update without pics anyway here is the front corner I wanted to test out the wash and stuff and see how it would look so here's an idea of how the rest will look one day

next I will be painting the whole thing with a shadow gray basecoat and then washing it with the black wash so it will look like the part I already did.

Post by: ZeinEizoku

I think that looks pretty awesome. I like how you are going with the Base coat and Wash, because that will defiantly speed up the painting time of the Leviathan. It is a nice simple Technique that makes a nice effect on the model and with some simple highlights and trimming. I think you could have this massive model done in a couple weeks? maybe 1 and a half total in-between all of your other painting and modeling projects and family lol

Again it looks great Necros

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/08/30 16:44:02

Post by: Necros

Yeah I think it will paint up quick. I think I may even get this bottom section done today. I have the shadow gray basecoat almost all done. Today is my first day in a long time where I have nothing to do at all so hopefully I'll get a lot done

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/08/30 16:51:15

Post by: ZeinEizoku

Well I hope you get it done today as well ^__^ I would love to see what a full section of the massive leviathan would look like.

On a side note, I downloaded and looked through the Lords of Battle pdf. I was shocked at some of the massive tanks in there. The Imperialis is just Monolithic to say the least. The fun challenge for me being the rule converter in my gaming group, is to now convert the Rules in LOB to Second Edition, because thats is what we play.

Keep it up Necros ^_^

Leviathan Blog - Done! @ 2009/08/30 19:50:21

Post by: Necros

If I were to ever build another massive tank thing I would want to go for one of those Ordinatus models. Or maybe build all 3 using the same bottom section where I can remove the top pieces for whichever one. Only thing is I just wouldn't have anywhere in my small condo to store it. it would probably need 3 baneblades for the bottom part alone, just based on the rhino size comparison. so it would be pretty huge.

I don't think I'm gonna get the bottom done today hehe .. haven't even started, other errands popped up. plan is gonna be to finish it some time this week. And then I will probably switch gears and do some lizardmen, then maybe my vet guardsmen after that. I like to keep doing different projects so I don't get burned out doing the same thing over and over.

OK I finished the bottom floor. Next I'll be doing the 2nd floor so I can get them glued together. I was going to stop here and take a break, but I have a big game coming up in a couple weeks so I wanna get as much of this done as I can now. here's pics:

That paint job looks a lot better than what I was thinking in my head Necros. Simplicity of it with the really nice details, like the Tech. Skull with the wiring and the Gold Accents. I love it.

here is a question, for the other floors are you just going to "Set" them on top, or are you going to glue them down. I was thinking it would be nice if you could glue little metal strips down Maybe under the first floor somewhere if possible then glue some magnets down on the second floor. I am just suggesting this. An idea for... Easy Transportation lol

thanks

I'm gonna just glue the 2nd floor to the 1st. I'll have everything glued except the weapons.

i thought about keeping it separate for transporting but there's no way this will fit in any kind of transport bag or anything so I'm not gonna waste my money on foam trays or anything. when I need to transport it I'll probably just put it in a big box and wrap it in a towel. it's not like my normal models that will be transported often, this will just be used maybe a couple times a year

yeah, I can't get too crazy with the paint job, I'll never finish it if I focus on every little detail. so it's just flat paint with a wash and a quick & dirty drybrush.

Once it's all done though I'm going to add some guys to the front porch. I got the commissar that's reading the book, and since I'll probably just be using my astropath in games I'll add the other 2 advisors up there with him. And if they'll fit I'll see if I can get some heavy stubber gunners on either side.

I just want to get as much of it done as I can now since I'll prolly be using it in a game in 2 weeks

Thanks

The front porch is going to have the commissar that's reading a book with his powerfist in the air right in the middle, then next to him I'll have a master of ordinance advisor and the officer of the fleet. And then on either side of the porch I'm going to add heavy stubber gunners with the guns that go on the side of a stormlord transport area.

that'll be at the very end though

when I play next week it's gonna transport my company command plus 4 units of vets for a total of 12 meltaguns and 6 plasmaguns I hope to roll it up to a big objective and then just unload everyone on the last turn

I LOVE THIS! but i do have some suggestions and tips if you will take them. you know the top roof where the shadowsword gun and anti aircraft gun are? it looks a tiny bit plain. i love it, but i would add something to it, maybe a wall around the outside (like the one that surrounds the ballcony at the front) and stick a hatch on it so that guardsman can go on the roof. also maybe mount some stubbers on this wall with guardsmen stationed behind them.

you could make another roof atop that one, slanting up from around the shadowswork gun. i love the rest of the tank but the roof just doesn't look exactly right. (sorry...)

the other thing is, baybe try putting a dozer blade or two at the front to clear the way ahead (you could also stick some close combat type weapons to it, eg chainsaw armed guardsmen to discourage boarding parties.

these are just suggestions, but feel free to ignore them.

That's an amazing creation, especially given how it started out

The sheer amount of guns on that is scary; I dread to think how much fire that could deal out in a turn.

One of the best things about registering here is seeing conversions like this which really push the hobby to new creative heights.

Thanks I submitted it to them and they wanted to do a feature on it. I had to take those action shots for the article. I'm hoping to get a good game in with it soon

So, a guy just emailed me offering to buy my Leviathan. For easily twice as much as I put into it. I had thought about keeping it a while, getting a game or 2 in with it over time and then ebaying it or something. So I'm wondering now, should I just sell it to this guy? or keep it a while? I could pretty much start a new army with what he wants to pay so it's tempting...

Hmm...I don't know the amount he offered you, but I'd have trouble parting with such an awesome piece.

yeah I did put a lot into it which is why I'm hesitant, and I never got to play with it either. but the price is pretty good. I'd pretty much take his cash and turn it into the Khador warmachine army I've been planning

Money talks, if its such a good deal sell it then make another for yourself with some the $$$ you made off the sell and get your Khador.

hehe, too late to haggle, already said yes

This whole project was a real learning experience for me, never really scratch built anything especially not this big. So now I know what to do if I ever want to build a new one or that ordinatus.
