FYI - current project view... ------------------------------------- I like the soul grinder model, but despair that - especially for chaos - that these guys all look the same. Which got me thinking - how could you make a custom one? I have tried building the bottom part of a soul grinder leg, and have a potential donor piece for the basis of the body - a very old fantasy giant. He is on a 40mm base and stands about 80mm high. this would be in scale and provide a very different looking soul grinder - just worries about the amount of green stuffing I would need to do (I am a GS novice) plus whether I could make the dopey looking giant torso and head menacing. As you may see from the scratch leg, I am playing around with using spue pieces as structure: Thoughts? Cheers

Yeah, you're gonna have to change that model a ton. I mean, the arm with the club will probably be changed, and you might want to beef up the arms, and cut off the nose, but I can see it being done.

OK
Decided that the old giant just wasn't going to cut it as a menacing demon machine of chaos.
So, moving on decided to have a go at least at making a fully scratch built beasty.
Now, I'll say this early in the piece - this is a modelling project as I enjoy modelling. It won't look anywhere near as good as the original Soul Grinder - that is already an excellent model.
So, built a base for it with tubing, coat hanger, sprue and a hotglue coating:
Looking to create a nurglesque Soul Grinder - hence the glue on the barrel of the phlegm cannon.

OK - now with some milliput on there:
Next up once it's cured a little more is to put some green stuff over the top to smooth it out, add details etc. It is destined to be a fat soul grinder of Nurgle.
So - need to creat a close combat weapon for his left hand, add a close combat weapon to the reaper cannon on the right and create the walker base.

OK - add a close combat weapon to the reaper cannon:
And created a close combat weapon for the left hand (still needs to be molded in and GS'ed up):
So it's coming along OK overall - still lots of work to do before I get onto the walker part.

Coming along quite nicely. I think if you add enough details with GS to completely cover the milliput, it should look excellent. The problem (well not really problem) with Nurgle things, I find, is they have so many diseases if there's any flat/blank spot it almost looks as though its missing something (some exceptions apply, of course). I look forward to seeing more progress!

Definitely coming along nurgly (see what I did there? )
IMO it still needs more disease, but it's not finished yet so you have time, hehe. The spine thing looks a bit too robotic, which sorta gave me the idea (to give you) to make it so that spine is in fact robotic and a bit that connects the daemon to the legs.
Sorry if that's a poor description as to what I'm thinking, but I haven't slept in many hours... *passes out*

Thanks - second time I'm using green stuff - first time was for a couple of tiny bits on my scratch deff dread. That effort was abysmal as far as effect went and decided not to do any more.
I watched a couple of youtubes and listened to some advice on here and picked up a couple of things that make it much easier:
1. Use vaseline. I rub a bit onto my fingers (very lightly) when I start on it, that was it doesn't stick to me.
2. Get some tools - I bought a three tool set from my FLGS which is plenty.
3. Something I picked up myself - smear some vaseline thinly on paper and use this as your work area. You can rub a flat part on the paper to make it nice and smooth, and work on flat parts cutting them up etc on there and you can lift them back off. Just need to be careful that you will be able to stick it to the model later.
4. Overlaying. As you can see from my first GS effort on this thread, I put some final details on there as my first pieces. These should have been done last after I had completed all the other stuff. Additionally, it's cool to layer detail, such as the rib cage with torn flesh above ( IMO anyway) - work out what you want to do and plan the moves required. This piece has been a bit chaotic as I've been learning as I go along.
Cheers

That spine now looks freakin awesome. That's exactly what I was getting at! Also I noticed more details on his back which also looks very gross (in a good way, of course).
The tongue looks good so far, but personally I dont like his nose and mouth. I'm thinking instead of a giant nose, perhaps make it slits like a snake (a solid example of this is a picture of my good friend Lucius the Eternal in the Chaos Codex). Perhaps even make his mouth like the Lucius picture as well? I know teeth are very hard to do, but you seem to have been able to grasp the concept of GS quite well so it shouldnt be too much of a problem. His eyes, while both are well done individually, look sorta off place (which may be what you were going for). If you dont want to change his eyes, I noticed a bit of a burst pustule on the top of his head, you could add another eye in there and then his mis-matched face would look even more daemonically delicious. My final bit of criticism on his head is that the shape is too round, and doesn't really fit with the whole amorphous blob feeling that Nurgle things have. For more ideas, I'd suggest checking out the old and new GUO heads, as well as the FW one.
So yeah those are just my own little quirks, but to be perfectly honest it is very good how it stands. I'm especially impressed with the spine (and pleased you used that idea!) Use those ideas if you like... just be sure to take more pictures! Awesome work, keep it up. Can't wait to see more!

Thanks Anticitizen
Great to get some solid feedback.
I'm thinking of ditching the nose as yeah - it didn't look quite right. The face sort of reminds of an owl bear for anyone who has played D&D.
Thinking maybe if I ditched the nose, put in some slits like a skull or snake and added another eyeball just above. And yes - I wanted the eyes off kilter to try and make him uglier (symetry is one of the hallmarks of beauty).
Now, onto the walker...
Keen on feedback for this, mocked up a leg:
The platform I am using is round with 6 legs spread out radially (so no front or back to the base). LOL - in hindsight I should have made it 7!
This is just a mock up glued together - does the idea look sound? Two claws on each leg would be holding it up. I also need it to be reasonably robust, as the beasty on top is getting quite heavy now!
Thanks for your help everyone - much appreciated.

Now that you mentioned having 7 legs, you clearly have to do it, haha. If you look at the most glorious Chaos Star, it obviously has 8 points. If you remove the front/top point you will be left with 7 (durrr) and you'll have a perfect spot for enemies to get eaten. Behold my mad photoshop skillz for the legs:
I don't know if you'll like that idea, but at least it will have 7 legs! (and in turn plenty of support)

Thanks AC,
I think I will go through and create a 7 legged walker, although I'm thinking that I'll make it with 7 legs spread around it.
This is because I like the idea of the engine part not having a facing as such, 7 legs for Nurgle and to provide stability (as I said, it's getting heavy!)
Cheers for the effort.

I can just imagine this beastly monstrosity clunking across the battlefield vomiting on everything. Which gave me another idea... once you do create the legs (more on my 'vision' in a second ) you should have them dripping with pus/ooze. Practise making tendrils of goo with the glue gun for a disgusting effect (once you get a droplet, blow on it so it cools as such).
So, for the legs, your idea thus far is spot on, but I think the 'knees' should rise above the central hub of legs. That will give it a spindly yet creepy look to it. The alternative is obviously to make them beefy and monstrous, both would look awesome, IMO.
If you "skull-erize" the face as you suggested, I think that will look a lot better

I like the idea of the spindly legs coming above - would give it a 7 legged arachnid sort of feel.
Thoughts on this sort of look?
The body looking at it again would probably be a little smaller than this view comparatively - but this sort of idea.

That looks pretty solid for sure. That pic is a good representation of how it will look. I like how the legs have 2 points of connection instead of just 1. Diseased robo arachnids are cool... hah.

OK - it's time for Face Off!
OK - removed the ears, tongue, mouth and nose.
Then drilled in a little where the nose and third eye goes:
Then built it back up again, including adding a much better set of jowls (will probably add another layer with the mouth when it's dried tomorrow).
Also, added some tendons/muscles to the claw:
Thanks for all the feedback guys. As you can see, quite happy to take onboard constructive ideas or advice! Keep it coming.

I was actually going to mention that it's nice that someone is using the ideas the community is presenting, and not just dismissing them (which I suppose is perfectly fine too ). Can't wait to see the face/mouth/thing take shape. Nice other eye
Have you thought of a colour scheme for him yet? There's a picture of a model I converted in my gallery (link in a second), and I think that sort of eye colour would look good with whatever grossness you select for the rest of the body. I used browns, yellows and greens, all stemming from a central point which then turned into a single black dot for the pupil.
Make sure to gloss varnish some bits of it for added effect!

I really like that eye. My thoughts right now are to paint the two "normal" eyes as having cataracts and paint the third eye demonically. Was thinking a cats eye or red, but really like the effect of that one.
Looking to create a regular rotting flesh look with black necrosis.

Hi all
Started rework on the base to make it 7 legged.
So, mocked up first in cardboard:
Looks like a Dalek, so cut it down a little:
Then cut the required shape into 1mm plasticard and taped it up with cellotape:
Put in some milliput to hold it steady:
But had to use a protractor for the first time since about 1987:
And also cut out an underside for it:
An unexciting update I know!

Thinking of having some clockwork showing on the underbody and some pistons shoving through into his flesh.

Hi - trying to get an arachnid sort of feel to the base with scuttling legs, but haven't really hit on anything yet that really works especially well...
Still thinking...
11761
Post by: crapconversionist
How about an upturned V shape? By putting the knee/ leg joint higher up and making the soulgrinder lower to the ground kinda giving a more arachnid feel.
Or why not have a large scenic base? and have it cligning to a ruined building or rock or something? A web made of glue on a wire frae might be strange (allthought might not fit in well with the idea of it being a chaos spawny)

Those legs are really cool. Definitely portrays the arachnid-esque feel. Though they look too long in that picture. Either that or they just have too much of a running leg, if you will (meaning they are very long with no bend). Perhaps if you broke the leg up into 3 sections instead of 2, that would help, IMO.
It might also just be the angle... or I could be dreaming

OK - made another couple of faces of pestilence - I'm thinking of painting these brass with verdigris when it comes to painting.
Also added some tendons to the legs, and mocked up an exhaust stack from the centre of the panel - one would be on each panel.
Found that boiling water is effective for the removal of surface hot glue - looking to create the legs as clear metal with tendons and perhaps the occasional boil rather than slime covered.

I'm thinking of red scorpians as the basis for "hosting" my Nurgle army - I think the red would work well with it...
Thoughts?

OK - time for an update on the Soul Grinder!
Have nearly completed the build...
Mounted in the grinder - note have added horns to the top of the legs, girders underneath and connection points to help with the monster/machine view:
An imperial guardsman's eye view just before death:
Overhead:
The gubbins underneath - note the waste exhausts and a magnet mounting for a future upgrade weapon:
Still left to do:
Milliput into the inside of the machine to join together the two pieces better.
Put some cogs inside the back of the unit.
Greenstuff up the connection points
That will pretty much see it finished - then onto painting!

OK - test paint tonight of a plague bearer to try out what I'm going to do on the Soul Grinder now it is ready for paint...
Thoughts? I think this could look good on a large monster, but happy to take advice.
Also started work on the nurgling base - decided to use Blood Angels as my Nurgle "seed" army:

The top half is good.
But the bottom half looks unfinished/ lacking details.
Sorry it is really awesome otherwise though

Not quite so pink in person - purple washes over light green.

LOL - I have only done a couple of sections of the bottom half - it is a large model to do it all at once!

@Budda_09 - Cheers; I plan to add a green ink wash to it tonight (following a white glaze) as well as some brown - so should tone down the pinkness a little, although it's not as pink as it looks here in person.
@Lord Kaesar II - LOL - originally when I was making it my daughter asked if she could take it to show and tell (she's 9). We have since agreed that it is not appropriate for a grade 4 class - which means it must be on the right track for Papa Nurgle!

How did you get that rusted copper-ish effect on the faces on the bottom half? I've been trying to learn that for a good week now.

Hey - Tin bitz base over black. Heavy wash with hawk turquoise lighted up. Heavy drybrush of tin bitz over the top, lighter drybrush of brazen brass, final drybrush across the top side of shining gold.

Probably finish it by the end of the weekend.

Updated - base coat on legs, upper body nearly finished although the photos made the colour completely wrong - must be from photographing on a black background? (yes, that is black marble, not brown!)
Updated cannon, vein lines

The lower part looks like it needs more building, it's too simple at the moment.
Grey and Red is an awesome zombie color scheme

It looks fantastic so far. I look forward to seeing the finished product.
I envy your use of brazen brass. Now that GW has discontinued the color, I am having a helluva time finding an alternative.

The lower part will have more depth when I do the aging/weathering and the sides will have some insignia from the daemon-looted Blood Angels rhino it comes from.
Too late for any changes though! LOL - you have to move on at some time and just finish it, otherwise you could tweak and rebuild forever.

Thanks! I can feel the guiding hand of Papa Nurgle at times...

Have you considered the Valego paints? They are apparently very good and match the Citadel options. I got this one from ebay and it's obviously old stock as it is quite dry inside.

Yes, I have. I try to avoid buying paints online, though, and none of the FLGS around here stock Vallejo. I'm still looking around, though.
Also, that leg is looking great. It feels a little too clean, though. If you weren't already going to, you should dirty it up with washes/what-have-you.

Did the finishing touches to it today - added matt coat, glossed the fleshy/mucousy bits etc.
Shown here with a plaguebearer for scale...
And completed the base for my plaguebearer too...
Happy with the swampy water effect.

Hi - I wanted it to be different to the current grinder - more sort of arachnid in the leg department so Nid like is OK to me.
mcfly wrote:It looks really good, but im suprised the legs can even hold it up. The things a beast!
I ran a core of wire throught the legs, so it actually is a very stable and sturdy piece. I would not like to drop it from table height, but will stand up to normal use fine.

And also thankyou for your advice and assistance early - helped set the course for this...

Cheers - I like the idea of a snot cannon for nurgle rather than a simple "harvester" cannon...
Thanks for the feedback guys.

Great thread. Your model really matured, and I enjoyed watching it grow.
I do agree that the legs clash with the rest of the model. The quickest way to change it would be making the whole thing shorter.
Seeing it's height in the picture next to the dread, I have to say that is HUGE. It looks like it's near titan size, most definitely bigger
than a wraithlord (or carnifex). I actually preferred the model when it was still pink, I think the bluish-gray almost looks like it's punching
the bronze faces. The faces were my favorite touch besides the final teeth you cam up with. I was hoping to see a screaming
mutant rabbit like face, with more of an open mouth, now it's along the lines of a mutant spider-mole thing.
Continuing the bronze theme from the faces to the legs would pull the whole model together. Highlighting crevices (on the legs) with a bronze-green will
help balance the overall tone of the model. The whole base looks like a drybrush layer or two would pull all the colors together.

Finished my custom nurgling base...
The idea was that the marine had been struck down by a plague sword, killed him by infestation which then sprouted nurglings from the corpse.
