Chaos Renegades, Defenders of Vraks - 50-41 Armoury (1750 Completed) @ 2009/02/15 21:05:23

Post by: AbsoluteBlue

Captain Scarvos paced and contemplated the latest news, reports had come in from command intelligence indicating four Thunderhawk transports were landing south of the Saritama Hills, 49-37. The unit at location reported the Thunderhawks bore Adeptus Sororitas iconography, but that was all they knew. Unfortunately, contact with the observer was lost before additional details were communicated. It was the duty of his company to confirm these reports and exterminate any new threats. However, before committing to a full engagement, he needed to send his own reconnaissance team to gather full details on this new enemy.

Kevin Nash and I have decided to do a "Tale of Four Gamers" type of campaign, where it's actually a Tale of Two Gamers. Kevin Nash has chosen the Witch Hunters and I have chosen Chaos Renegades (counts as Imperial Guard) as the armies for this tale. Over the course of 18 weeks we will progressively build our armies, with a battle played every three weeks. The milestones are as follows:

Edit: This campaign is actually Shep, Kevin Nash, and I doing a "Tale of Three Gamers" now. With Shep doing Tau. This is old news, but I figured I would update the main entry to clarify what you may read about Shep's army below.

Week 3: 400 total points each (Combat Patrol)
Week 6: 700 total points each
Week 9: 1000 total points each
Week 12: 1250 total points each + 1 objective each
Week 15: 1500 total points each + 2 objectives each
Week 18: 1750 total points each + 3 objectives each

Scoring, every three weeks, will be done as follows:

Models Painted on Time: 5 points
Models Painted Late: 3 points
Models not Painted: 0 points

Battle Won: 3 points
Battle Draw: 2 points
Battle Lost: 1 point

You may note that the scoring is weighted more towards having our armies painted, this is to keep the motivation targetted towards building and painting a full army.

As part of this campaign, I decided to document, P&M Blog, the development of my Chaos Renegades Army.

With that, I introduce WIP 1st Armoured Fist Squad of my Reconnaissance Squadron (180 points) , with Enforcer (40 points), for the 400 pt Combat Patrol:

I still need to build another Armoured Fist Squad to complete the Reconnaissance Squadron, aka Combat Patrol.

Thanks for reading!

edit:

1750 POINTS COMPLETED!

Nice concept, I shall be following this thread and stealing your idea in lieu of the 'esclation league' format at the FLGS.

Did a color test using one of my models. I think I am close to the color scheme I want.

More taking notes for myself right now but...

The cloth is : basecoat Bestial Brown, a wash of Devlan Mud, liberal drybrush of Snakebite Leather. and drybrush Vomit Brown
The metal is : baseboat Boltgun Metal, 2-3 washes of Badab Black, a wash of Devlan Mud, and a selective dab of watered down Vermin Brown

Not a whole lot of pop, but I want a dusty Vraks militia and I think this will do. I also discovered I need better lighting for my light tent , as the model is a bit darker in person.

Renegade IG are totally rad. I am liking the color scheme so far, but I think maybe something different for the head. Maybe a leathery brown or something like that. Can't wait to see them finished!

Nice sickly colour scheme. Maybe do the leather/head in a different leathery shade?

I like it, but it does indeed lack pop. Ever consider a dirty whitish cloth for the rags on his head. Depending on how detailed you wanted to get you could even put stains (blood, bile, ect.) on it.

Pick out some of the details as posted above to get them to pop a little more (canteen/scabard/belt). Lookin' good though, I will deffinitly follow this to see how everything turns out. Good luck!! both of you guys.

I worked on a second one today. Anyone have any advice on how to do the eyes? I'm going to go over the hair again as well and fix the gold jewelry.

The next step is gonna be to do the remaining infantry in bolt gun metal. I look to acquire and build the Rhino on Wednesday.

I think It would be cool and also make your renegades stand out more if there head cloth were to be a red or green.Kevin the eyes are fairly easy just grab your fine detail brush and paint them white and add small dots of black for the iris.

Deff, and others.. I think you are all right on with giving some color to the head cloth. I am going to paint night this wednesday, where I will meet up with Shep, Gitsmack, and others that are far more prodicient with the color palletes and I will bounce this feedback off them so they can help me with a good color fit. (I am a bit color blind, so color selection is difficult for me). In the meantime, I am moving forward with the existing color scheme, for the sake of meeting my goals, but if we can come up with a good color for the hoods, I can do a quick re-paint of just the hoods, which will go fast.

We can talk more about this at paint night but just in case you go home tonight and want to work more on this test model, I'll throw in my two cents.

First off, that khaki looks fantastic! the steps you used are all worth it, the cloth is extremely 'deep' and rich looking.

The metal also is spot on. It doesn't look non-functional, but it looks like its seen better days, and hasn't been cared for.

Here is your problem with 'pop'. Small models like this need contrast, the more stark the contrast, the better. The more 'like' the colors on the model are, the harder it is for the eye to find any distinction in the model. For some armies like eldar and tau, you can take out a color wheel pick two contrasting colors, make them pastels, and apply it to the model for an eye catch, head turning paint job. Which earns you many oohs and ahhs. For a guy like this, that is wearing khaki fatigues and has rusty metal, coming up with contrast is a lot harder.

Ok, so rather than talk about the color wheel (which I know nothing about) I'm going to talk in terms of 'warm' colors and 'cool' colors. Everything in the red/brown/yellow camp is warm. Everything in the blue/green/grey camp is cool. Adding black or white to a color technically doesn't change what family its in, it just changes its tone. You have this wonderful brown here, from the knees of the model to the top of his head. Thats mega warm, and it is the dominant color of the model. Ok, so you have a great contrast in there with the boltgun metal. That metal is certainly a 'cool' color, and you have a lot of it on your dude. To make it look chaosy and evil, you washed it with some brown wash. It looks fantastic, but what you've done is warmed up your cool color contrast considerably. So now we have a model that looks cool, but from tabletop distance has no 'gotcha' factor at all. In the words of Murderface "It needs more 'zazz."

My suggestion for another 'cool' tone that you could throw on this model that is still evil and hardcore looking would be black. The sheath for the bayonet, the canteen, the ammo pouch, the boots and maybe even the rifle casing can be black. Highlight it with a mix of black and codex grey and keep any warm colors away from it. Paint the imperial eagle and other details boltgun, but hold the devlan mud.

The last thing I'd do would be to add some freehand detail, some mechrite red right out of the bottle to make chaos stars and X's to go over the imperial iconography would add a little more fun. It wouldn't need to be perfectly done, since you could go for a 'fresh blood applied with a finger' look.

Another sneaky place to add contrast is the base. I use the base all the time to add color and contrast to models. I'm trying to remember how you based your black legion, and what your realm of battle is painted as. You can use static grass, the color of the sand, and even the color of the ring around the base to sneak new colors into your model. Remind me tomorrow what your basing scheme is.

Great job so far! I'm totally impressed. Did Nash tell you I'll be joining you guys? You can keep me out of the fluff since you have such a great witch hunters versus traitors matchup going, but I just want the extra motivation that timelines and competition brings.

Hey! Nice stuff! Good to see you getting bloggy about your traitors.

One little suggestion for pop... you could add some color to the lenses in the re-breather mask... maybe even some orange like you did with your plague marines. Alternatively, jade/scaley green might be an interesting look and would be a nice contrast from the khaki.

I like what Shep said about the chaos markings in red too... though you might be able to get away with putting them on in calthan brown or scorched brown if you don't want to step away from your palette.

Keep up the good work!

Here is a WIP view of the Armoured Fist Squad. I have decided on holding off on doing the extra level of detail until I have the entire 400 points is complete, as I need to remember I am on a time limit. I am doing some additional weathering and details for the Chimera and will post those this weekend.

I like the way they look like miltia but the thing that I think would add flavor is like mud on the bases (spackle)
or so kind of debirs looks empty.

How many more do you need ?. I think IMO your beating the SOB player

For better or worse the bases are going to have to match my Realm of Battle Board For which I use Scorched Brown, Dark Flesh, and a Drybrush of Kommando Khaki, it looks a little muddy, and as part of the basing I will also me muddying up the boots, so good call!

For 400 pts I just need to build and paint 4 more guardsmen, base all 20, weather and detail my built Chimera, and build, paint, etc 1 more Chimera. Yeah the SoBs are going down I have decided to replace my 2 Meltas with Plasma Guns, so if I can force him out of his vehicles before he gets close, I win.

Edit... I also have 2 weeks left, so that should give me enough time to go back and add at least one more level of detail to everything.

eyes = a knitting pin, skull white paint, a steady hand.

pupils = same pin, washed off, chaos black, steady hand, small jabbing motion, also steady hand.

its how i do it. want a pic?

also, for those traitor troopers, try a blue for the "eye" in the head mask.

I completed the 1st Armoured Fist Squad.

Starting with my first attempt at free hand drawing on a tank we have the Chimera:

I am really happy with the way the Chaos iconography turned out and I look forward to adding more symbols and graffiti to this Chimera.

Next, I have the full squad, including the Chimera and the attached Enforcer:

Barring the fact that I need more/better lighting for taking pictures, I am also happy with the results of this squad. The basing was done to specifically match my Realm of Battle Board. I haven't applied any of the great input that I have recieved on this thread, yet. However, I am stopping at this level of detail, until I finished off the second squad and see how much time I have left.

Thanks to the inspiration and guidance from Shep, I am extremely happy with the results of the Heavy Weapons Team:

The best part, and all thanks to Shep, and his Vostroyan Re-Paint Plog, for telling me how to do this, is that I like how well the spotter fits in and is removable:

The full progression for the base is seen here:

Now I am off to finish the second squad!

Again, thanks for the input!

The update looks good man, although i would write some blasphemous quotes on the tank during detailing.

i would also reccommend krylon flat clear spray. $3 at wally world and your loving paint jobs are protected.

The blasphemous quote will definitely make it onto the tank during detailing!

Thanks for the recommendation on the krylon clear spray, and after I do a few more rounds of detailing on all of the models I will probably do that

Thanks!.

@Somnicide: Thanks! No p-log for the Black Legion :( I will consider maybe doing a p-log for it, though I feel like I'd be cheating since its already painted up to 1750. However, since I already have the Black Legion painted up to 1750+, maybe I will just document it's evolution into the Apocalypse, alternative lists, etc. And it is constantly evolving, albeit slowly now that I have this second army growing. I have learned so much since starting that Black Legion army, I feel like I could revisit it and considerably enhance the quality of it.

Man... your productivity is astounding. I can't wait to see what you have finished by this weekend.

I really like the idea of doing a "Blog to Apocolypse" to showcase your Black Legion as it adds a few models to reach Apocalypse size. You've got a tough model-count army to paint for the "Tale of 4 gamers" style painting challenge you're doing with Shep and KevinNash, but with the way you crank out models, you might just have time to work on that Apocalypsizing blog at the same time as this one.

Keep up the good work!

Nice painting guys. All three of these forces look very nice, the SoB vehicles could use filling in of the metal bits on their stained glass canopies, but other than that they´re super.

FW renegades always make my day, it really saddens me that they´re so expensive, the models are just beautiful (in a horrible, chaotic evil way). Very nice dusty scheme on them.

As for the Tau... Nice painting! Even better with the scenery and background, actually looks like something GW would make for WD. And I mean that in a good way. :9

you three and your awesome productivity!

But seriously, great work on your new armies!

@Shep - Such clean, shiny Tau from someone who swore against white primer for so long... hehe... your army looks crazy-good! I love the paint-scheme and can't wait to see what you wind up with in the rest of your list. Seriously mad paint skills on display... kudos.

@AbsoluteBlue - Awesome Traitor Guard! I can't believe how quickly you paint and how great your stuff looks - especially having gotten into painting 40k so recently (relatively speaking of course ). This is going to be another army that I'll get so much joy out of looking at, that I won't mind how badly it's crushing mine.

@KevinNash - Great Sisters! It's awesome seeing how you're just going for it on this army and trying loads of new paint techniques. I can see you having a ton of fun with the list too - such a counter-point to Orks.

Keep kickin' butt and hopefully we can get in some games with our new lists sometime soon.

@GitSmack - Thanks for the compliments. I am glad to have gotten this far!

The combat patrol has left the armoury and is in route to the last known location of the SoB sighting.

With that a, me trying to have fun learning the camera and lighting, pic of the Chimera:

Furthermore, I started making some progress on the next round. Since i will need a full infantry platoon, I introduce you all to Platoon Commander Lt. Kerr:

Going with the Forge World Chaos Renegades models has been great, but it also sets me up with a limited model set. As such, I tried to create an officer that fit in with the theme of the army, but looked a little different.

Great idea for setting achievable structured milestones for your army to develop.

I think someone before has said, but I think the renegades would really stand out more with a little more contrast. They need a third "spot" colour on them to catch the eye. Since you already used dark red on the chimera, why not use it for some hoods, armour plates etc. Also, adding some brighter metal chips and scratches on the armour areas would help bring them out a bit too.

I know its not something your probably planning to add at this stage but maybe something to consider once you hit the next milestone?

Keep up the good work.

@CMDante - adding pop has been a common topic for my army. I have been playing around with many of the options suggested on a test model. So far the brighter metal chips and scratches will most likely be used. As for the hood colors, this has been a huge struggle for me I don't like that my army is the attack of the brown for sure, but I am having trouble with what to add, but still have it look somewhat natural. Red might work and I will be doing some test models and hopefully something catches my eye.

Quick Update - (Pics and Battle Reports will Follow)

Week 3 has been fully resolved and the outcome is as follows:

* All 3 armies were successfully painted up to 400 points. (5 points each).

We used the Combat Patrol scenario from the 4th Edition rulebook on a 4' x 4' table, while still using 5th Edition rules.

* The Chaos Renegades were annihilated by the Tau. Shep's hit and run tactics left the Renegades near helpless, destroying every Renegade and losing only one crisis suit. (Absolute Blue: 1 point v Shep: 3 Points)
* The Sisters of Battle put up a great challenge for the Tau, as their power armor helped them survive long enough to get a few melta shots on the Tau crisis suits, forcing a draw. (Kevin Nash: 2 points v Shep: 2 points)
* While the Chaos Renegades put up a decent fight, taking out the Immolator, the Rhino, and with some handywork by the Enforcer, they also took out the Celestians. However, the Battle Sisters drove forward taking out both of the Renegade Chimeras with their Meltas and then pressing hard against the unit without the Enforcer, forcing them into a retreat. Points were counted and the Sisters of Battle earned the win. (Absolute Blue: 1 v Kevin Nash: 3)

Total Points for Week 3:

Absolute Blue: 7 points
Kevin Nash: 10 points
Shep: 10 points

From the Renegade perspective, I had no chance against the Tau. At 400 points the Tau had 8 twin-linked 36" S7 AP4 shots, combined with an assault move gave them an effective 42" range. While my auto-cannons could give them some trouble, and managed to kill 1 suit, I just could not come close to matching fire. Attempting to get in range exposed my side armor to the Devilfish, so I was basically a sitting duck. Going forward I think what I need in this situation is to maintain cover discipline, get longer ranger (i.e. a Battle Cannon), and be able to get some hard hitting troops inside 12" (i.e. Hardened Veterans w/ Drop Troops)

Against the Sisters of Battle, my chances were much better since I had better range for the first 2 turns. Unfortunately, trying to stay out of melta range became difficult on the 4' x 4' table and their armor saves (and periodic invuln from faith) made them difficult to thin out enough. The result being that once they got within 12" I was fairly doomed. I will say my Enforcer did an excellent job at saving one of the units from assured destruction. Yet, the other unit fell under the wrath of the sisters and I just could not compete at close range. Going forward I need to be able to screen my lines and establish a means of "countering" at close range (i.e. command squad w/ flamers). I also had issues with morale, so a banner would also help. I anticipate seeing some Exorcists showing up in the next batch so heavy armor and range will be critical (i.e. Leman Russ).

At 700 points and following force organization rules, this next round will still be rough for the Chaos Renegades, as my mandatory choices alone will be around 350-400 points (considering HQ squad, Platoon Command Squad, 2 Infantry Squads, and an Armored Fist Squad). I am not positive what exactly I will be bringing on week 6 yet, but I do know I HAVE to build and paint at least 20 more renegade models of various builds, I will start with that. I am about 95% on bringing a Leman Russ, so I will probably build and paint one of those as well. I suspect 5 hardened vets w/ 3 meltas will also make the list, but this has yet to be decided by me

Again, battle reports and pics of current progress will be coming soon. Until then, thanks for reading!

Sorry still no battle reports posted, but I have decided on my Week 6 build for 700 points and here are some WIP photos of what the Chaos Renegades are so far:

In the above photos we have the following, from back to front:

1. HQ Company Command Unit, consisting of a Junior Officer (w/ Plasma Pistol), 1 Veteran (w/ Banner), and 3 Guardsmen (w/ 3 Flamers)
2. Platoon Command Unit, consisting of a Junior Officer, and 4 Guardsmen (w/ 4 Flamers)
3. Platoon 1st Squad, Sergeant and 9 Guardsmen (w/ 1 Autocannon, and 1 Plasma Gun)
4. Platoon 2nd Squad, Sergeant and 9 Guardsmen (w/ 1 Autocannon, and 1 Plasma Gun)
5. Armoured Fist Squad, Sergeant and 9 Guardsmen (w/ 1 Autocannon, and 1 Plasma Gun), with the Chimera (w/ Multi-Laser and Heavy Bolder) on the rear-left.
6. On the right side, Hardened Veterans, 1 Veteran Sergeant and 4 Veterans (w/ 3 Meltaguns, and 2 Shotguns), these are of special note as they are made using the Cadian bodies, the air tanks cut from the Renegade bodies, and the heads from the Pig Iron Kolony Rebels.
7. On the front left, there is a WIP Mars Alpha Pattern Leman Russ (w/ Modified Ryza Pattern Battle Cannon)

The above is the same from a different angle (ignore the Ogryns, Advisors, and Tyranids in the back for now ).

These are all looking really good and it seems a clever idea to force you to paint and collect to a time limit. One thing I can't help noting the Guard player seems to lack S8 Suit Killer/Sister killing weapons.

Looking good. Mebbe I wil have to try this with some of my friends, but starting with 500 points and going up in 250 point increments. Belive me, mine will be guard.

@Llamahead - the 700 point list has a Battle Cannon and 3 "Deep Striking" (Since I will take Drop Troops) Meltaguns. I am hoping it will be enough to deal with the Suits and Exorcists, but I agree that I am deficient. It is hard for guard to cram a lot of stuff in at 700 points, since FOC for IG is rough. :(

@Jimi Nemesis & Llamahead- I recommend this approach, it has done wonders for painting motivation

Here are some WIP pics for my 700 points. I lack a light tent so the quality is pretty lousy but I wanted to display how much is done.

My current 700 point list. This is subject to change as I've got a week and a half to finish it up:

Heavy Support

Exorcist = 135

Celestian Squad with Cannoness and Immolator

More Week 6 Work in Progress:

Here we have a Mars Alpha Pattern Leman Russ with a Modified Ryza Pattern Battle Cannon, Engine Filters, and Trench Rails. Just when I think I get used to dealing with resin, I get to build a model for which I have resin parts that are poorly molded and warped. After a lot of reshaping with hot water and a bit of sand paper, I got everything to fit together (with the help of some green stuff). I seem to like making this challenge hard for myself, but I am loving the results, yet to think I probably have at least two more of these to build by the time I get to 1750, and probably more (with differrent turret options) when the new codex comes out is more than a little initimidation.. I think it's worth it so far.

Post by: GitSmack

@AbsoluteBlue - What a great looking tank... the extra effort dealing with all those resin parts is sooo worth it. I've always loved the Mars Alpha Russ chasis and it's going to be nice to see one (or two or three or MORE) in person. I can't wait to see how that thing looks painted up to your renegade guard standard.
It looks like things are really going to open up for you after the 700pt mark... a few more options and, before you know it, the new codex. Good times ahead... keep up the great work.

@Kevin Nash - Nice work on the sisters. I've heard that the exorcist can be a pain to assemble... glad you pushed through and got it knocked out. Your paint work is really coming along... it'll be great watching this army expand.

@Shep - Always with the suspense... Looking forward to seeing what that next bit of your Tau army turns out like...

Onward!

Due to work demands I have been challenged with the task of painting 25 "guardsmen" and a Leman Russ in 7 days, about 3 hours a day, (with 1 day down so far). As a result I have gone paint assembly line crazy.. and here are the 1st day results

I plan on doing all of the metals tonight.

I've been grinding out kroot in much the same way... it is still satisfying to complete goals and to have finished models, but when you are painting for hours on hours and don't get to see a completed model for a week, it can take the wind out of your sails a bit. you can probably get away with doing all the base coating and large brush drybrushing in a 25x assembly line, but maybe you can break the detail work loads to a unit by unit basis so you can get the happy feelin that is completing a unit more often.

Now that these rumors are coming out, and knowing that right about when you hit the 1500 mark you'll have a new codex in your lap, doesn't that make it that much easier? hehe

Oh and if it makes you feel any better, i should be done with my 700 tonight.

Chaos Renegades, Defenders of Vraks - 50-41 Armoury (1750 Completed) @ 2009/03/20 19:58:24

Post by: AbsoluteBlue

When it comes to the more unique characters, officers, sergeants I agree and will probably pull them out of the assembly line and work on them individually or in a small group, but for the main troops, at this point I have already painted so many I think I am going to just crank through the 20+ I have in one big batch

From the rumours, it sounds like all of my work will not go to waste and will fit in with the new codex... which is GREAT!

Good job on getting done with the 700!!!

Well, it was a rough three weeks and my army arrive late (only scoring 3 points for the paint, since I finished a day late).. but here it is:

(probably too many models for one pic)

HQ Command Squad, JO w/ Plasma Pistol, Vet w/ Banner, 3x Flamers
Platoon Command Squad, JO, 4x Flamers
2 Platoon Squads, each with 1x AC, 1x Plasma Gun
1 Armoured Fist Squad, 1x AC, 1x Plasma Gun, Chimera w/ ML and HB
1 Hardened Veteran Squad, 3x Meltaguns, 2x Shotguns
1 Leman Russ w/ HB

For a total of 47 models.. ugh.

Now for a pic of me experimenting with my Game Board:

Sorry no battle reports yet, but super quick update that I will expand on later:

Week 6 Painting:

Shep: 5 points
Nash: 5 points
AbsoluteBlue: 3 points

Week 6 Battle:

Shep v Absolute Blue: The Tau once again destroyed the Chaos Renegades in a Seize Ground mission. Shep 3 points, Absolute Blue 1 point.

Kevin Nash v. Absolute Blue: While the Renegades were able to do some significant damage to the SoB vehicles, they couldn't stop the charge, and in an annihilation game, using 4th Ed IG rules, I gave up way too many KP, losing the game. Kevin Nash 3 points, Absolute Blue 1.

Kevin Nash v. Shep: I wasn't around for this battle but I heard it was a tough fight for the SoBs against the elusive Tau in a Seize Ground mission, where the SoBs forced a draw: Kevin Nash 2 points, Shep 2 points.

Total Points through Week 6

AbsoluteBlue: 14 points
Shep: 20 points
Kevin Nash: 20 points

So I am off to a rough start, but I will be using the new Codex rules, going forward.. which will hopefully give me a fighting chance

On to week 9 progress:

So the group decided that I should focus on the "new IG codex" and work towards using those rules going forward. As such, I had to bring my Veteran Squad up to 10 members. I also decided to add another Leman Russ. I haven't decided on the last part of my 1000 point list yet, but I sense an artillery piece.

As a mini reward to myself, not sure why I deserve a reward but gave myself one anyways... and after being greatly inspired by a fun game of Apocalypse with Shep, Somnicide, GitSmack, and wolflordkejl, I built one of my super-heavies, a Malcador:

Bam, my forgeworld order arrived today and here is my first Hydra!

As a result of this new arrival... the Week 9 List might be only one Leman Russ, but add two Hydras. Thinking of the meta-game here, long-range anti-light vehicle platforms might be a better choice than another battle cannon. 1) I need to stop the immolators before they get too close and 2) This might be a good way to shut down a devilfish.

@Lost Hobbit - It definitely is. I will say that for big model count armies, it is very aggresive. To think that if I was doing Space Marines or Chaos Space Marines, I would probably already have 1750 points worth of painted models. However, I really wanted to get the renegades built and painted and this is working out really well.

My next batch will be easy. But then getting to 1500 is going to be a nightmare. Adding the second big kroot unit and filling out the fire warriors will be a lot of models to paint. Plus I'm getting REALLY distracted now that my main army is getting a new codex.

Well, it took a while to get the Week 9 games in, since I was traveling for work, but we finally got through them all this weekend:

Shep's Tau v. KevinNash's SoB - Shep's positional relay confuses and befuddles in a game of annihilation. Shep scores early and forces KevinNash to try to get Kill Points. Shep wins, per earlier posted batrep. Shep 3 points, KevinNash 1 point.

AbsoluteBlue Renegade IG v. KevinNash's SoB - another game of annihilation, pitched battle. The guard get a good position vs the SoB but a series of poor damage rolls and scatters, leaves the SoB in great position to lay their flamers down on my troops, while the Exorcists shell my artillery. I concede at the bottom of turn 4. KevinNash 3 points, AbsoluteBlue 1 point.

AbsoluteBlue Renegade IG v. Shep's Tau - Seize Ground with 5 objectives, spearhead. I actually get a chance to rain fire down on the positional relay for 2 whole turns... 2+ saves keep the relay alive. The guard put up a fighting chance, but the Kroot pass a critical morale test and hold strong rolling over my objectives, giving Shep the win. Shep 3 points, Absolute Blue 1 point.

Furthermore, we all finished our painting on time. 5 points each.

Week 9 Totals:
AbsoluteBlue: 21
KevinNash: 29
Shep: 31

Shep takes the lead and they both leave me far behind

9 more weeks to go though, and while I doubt I will win.. the army is shaping up nicely, which was the point Not giving up yet though, I will crush them one day.

Still WIP, but I think it looks appropriate. Also, the inspiration for doing this actually came from Shep, since he has already done this with his Phaeton pattern turrets and he was the one that showed me that the hellhammer looks like the eradicator.. so all credit goes to him

Week 12 has come and gone... and we are now at 1250 points.. here's my key additions:

The Valkyrie, if I was paying more attention to the meta-game, I should have immediately converted this to a Vendetta, but this is for fun and I will make the next one a Vendetta:

The Leman Russ Executioner with Plasma Sponsons:

The Leman Russ Battle Cannon with Plasma Sponsons, this is just temporary since I needed the cheapest turrent for other points and this will later become probably either a demolisher, eradicator, or vanquisher:

The Psychic Battle Squad with 8 Psychers, fluff here is that the Overseer is a renegade Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor that rounded up a group of severally warp tainted psychers and has herded them into doing what they doing, weakening the resolve of the enemy as their minds fall prey to the machinations of the warp:

Basic group shot, in the back you might be able to make out the supply pallet I painted as an objective for this round:

List is currently:

CCS (4x Flamers, Chimera)
PBS (8 Psychers, Chimera)
Vets (3x Plasma Guns, Chimera)
Vets (3x Meltaguns)
Valkyrie (MRL)
2x Hydra (Squadron)
LRBT w/ Plasma Sponsons
LR Executions w/ Plasma Sponsons
1 Objective

@FoxPhoenix135 - Some options/alternatives to maybe try with some friends is to do a fixed amount to spend per month (to fit within your budget, which is something that FLGS often do with their build and battles from what I have seen), or lower the points per month to something less aggressive. I am a DINK (dual income no kids) and don't spend money on prety much anything else except the basics so I go kinda crazy. However, I am actually going to start up a slower campaign with some friends on tighter budgets. It will progress slower, but any sort of competition/build and battle set up I recommend since it has vastly improved my productivity and focus.

@Somnicide - Thanks, credit goes to Gitsmack for the idea, though I was told it was Gitsmack's idea through Shep. I liked that it was very simple plastic kit with one necromunda model donated to me by Shep. Thanks to both of them... and the rest of Sprue Posse for keeping me motivated.

@Vitruvian - Thanks. I am still learning, so compliments really inspire me to get better With regards to paint jobs.. there are two different ways I have been going

1) The Leman Russ Executioner

a) Prime Chaos Block
b) Airbrushed Calthan Brown
c) Applies a liberal coat of Devlan Mud (I tried once with an airbrush and it was too uniform, so I switched to a Brush and it looked "muddier."
d) Drybrush Calthan Brown
e) Drybrush Bestial Brown
f) Edge with Bleached Bone

2) The Leman Russ w/ Battle Cannon

a) Prime Chaos Block
b) Airbrushed Calthan Brown
c) Applies a liberal coat of Devlan Mud (I tried once with an airbrush and it was too uniform, so I switched to a Brush and it looked "muddier."
d) Drybrush Calthan Brown
e) Dryrbush Kemri Brown
f) A couple edge highlights with Dheneb Stone

Tracks for both tanks are:

a) Tin Bitz
b) Drybrush Boltgun Metal
c) Wash with Badab Black

Road dirt at bottom of tanks:

a) Drybrush Scorched Brown
b) Drybrush Dark Flesh
c) Light drybrush of Graveyard Earth

I am actually not totally sold on these steps and I am considering alternative paint schemes for the tanks to give them more "Pop", but I need to learn more and practice more before I bother

@Vitruvian XVII - Blame Shep and Kevin Nash Or in a way you can blame the new IG codex Basically, Shep's main army is IG and when the Codex came out he was so distracted by it that he "conceded." Along with that Kevin Nash really wanted to retool his Orks, his main, to be able to handle the new IG. I understand where they were coming from, but its rough when we were only 6 weeks from finishing, with only 500 points more to paint.

@em_en_oh_pee - Well, until I started my renegades I didn't think there were that many. Then after I start this PLOG I noticed there were a lot of folk also doing/done with Renegades, for me it was newer since I only started 40k in 5th edition, but seeing the Codex: Eye of Terror with the Lost and the Damned list, I realized there has been a lot of work around the concept of traitor guard in the past. Personally, I loved the Forgeworld Siege of Vraks books and I am all about the Chaos so it was a great fit for me.

Well, having seen so many and given the "elite" style of my lists, I may just go for Elysians or Cadians. Renegades do look sweet though! I love the Malcador.

For me, I started 40K as a Chaos Space Marines player and after getting introduced to Apocalypse, I felt it would be great to start up a second army but keep it Chaos Themed. I liked the Vraks books and the Forgeworld models so much, I felt this needs to be my second army .. At some point, I will also build a Chaos Daemons army, but first things first

I feel for you [soo close to finishing!], but i know how good it can feel to redo/ update an army thats just got a new codex so Shep's not really to blame (ps his Vostroyans definitley look sweeter with the repaint snow theme, so you've got to let him off)

I did it the other way round, started with daemons for the painting opportunities then went to deathguard then started renegades to get some nice tanks. lol. When are you going to post some more progress? It would be really nice to see your latest models.

So it's a horrible pic, but...

Just to show, I am at least working on this army... here is what I recently finished base coating and/or priming for addition... I use an airbrush so I do them in batches:

So you can see there is a basilisk, chimera, leman russ, malcador, and hydra. Hard to see but there is also some (5) Ogryns and a Blood Slaughterer ready for painting. And finally, there are a few turret options ready for painting, including a executioner, demolisher, eradicator, and vanquisher turret ready to be painted. This will put me close to 2250 fully painted. I will post more pics as I get some of these finished.

I think it looks good, and it looks competitive as well. There might be a bit of "fat" according to Shep's exacting standards, but I definitely think it looks competitive. We should do a game sometime soon with our tourney lists to start tuning them a bit.

For Tourney lists, I am dropping the Valkyries and Vendettas unless there is clarification on the rules for them. Since I think there will be some time between the tourney and when the hellhound box comes out, I might switch it to some of those variants. (I will also switch all the Chimera HBs to HFs before the tourney as well)

Sorry, no new paint progress (was distracted by my CSM Black Legion Army, for which I have some new paint pics to upload soon). However, I had a productive night and built three new Leman Russ variants... 2 Mars Alpha Pattern Leman Russes with Modified Ryza Pattern Exterminator Turrets and one Vanquisher (of same patterns) that will soon become my "Pasquisher" option...

I will be going to the Battle Foam Tournament in October, and I need to bring a painted army and I have decided to take my Renegades, so I will definitely be painting more to get to a Competitive 1750 point list, so more paint and more changes to the list will be occurring.

In preparation for the Battlefoam Wild West Shootout, I had to create a display board for my army:

As you can see, I still need to paint the two Devil Dogs, but once that is done, I will have the 1750 point completed. I am actually closer to 1750 total than this picture shows, given I also have a painted Valkyrie and another LRBT painted, but this is what I think I am going to take to the tournament.

I went to Home Depot and bought a 2'x2' piece of 1/4" plywood, enough base board to make 4 2' pieces of frame, a miter box with a saw, finishing nails, black primer spray paint, and a hammer.

I cut 4 pieces of the based board at 2' long with the 45 degree cut on the mitre box (I was a bit lazy so if you look close the corners are not great, but its fine for me.) Nailed the base boards to the edge of the plywood.

Glued some dirt down. Primed black. Took some left over paint I had from my Game Table (Home Depot scan of Dark Flesh and Kommando Khaki for a pint of each) and painted the board. Sprayed on Testor's Dullcoat. Applied scorched grass. Sprayed on Polycoat to seal.

Done

Rushed through some objectives for the army during paint night:

Nothing too special, but they will do for now They are from the Forgeworld Booby-Traps set. With the idea for the objective being that my Chaos Renegades need to "Set [them] up the bomb."

@slann and Empchild - Yeah I still need to add some Zazz So far, all I can think of to add a little color but still keep in theme is to maybe make the hoods green or red, as suggested much earlier. I am just happy to have a fully painted army finally Now I get to slowly Zazz it up and add some of the more "fun" units, like the Ogryns I have.

like the overall look. Wish I was going to be at this tourney just to see the awsome armies. As it stands though looks like for me the job will let me go to mechanicon so hopefully I will see a bunch of you there.
P.S: you could have messed with him and told him "ya sure we need 5 objectives and 4 pieces of terrain"...but only if the dark gods were telling you too.

Actually, on the Rules and Guidelines pdf that Jama sent out the last line of WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING is objective markers.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING
• Your Army
• At least four (4) copies of you army list
• Rulebooks and any other books you need
• Pen and paper
• Dice and templates
• Tape measure
• Super glue (accidents will happen!)
• Objective markers

Objective markers

Do I now rules lawyer and say that this could easily be interpreted as including any objective markers, such as the translucent green flags from GW?

@Empchild - haha, that would be funny.. though I think I best watch out for my sportsman score Next thing you know its payback when/if we play each other and I would deserve it.

lol I know I like to poke fun with people alot...keeps me sane. I had the priviledge of playing against dave years ago at the vancouver GT. Got to play against his origonal Blood Pact force. Was a great game though I threw him for a loop when my gaming club made me wear a tiara....dont ask. Was a good sport I remember bout it all.

I had a great weekend at the Battlefoam Wild West Shootout. The Chaos Renegades managed to have a good showing, going 3-1-1, with a Round 1 loss against some Space Marines, a Round 2 draw against a fellow traitor guard army, Dave Taylor's Blood Pact, a Round 3 win against Black Templars, a Round 4 win against Chaos Daemons, and a Round 5 win against Eldar.

Round 1 vs Space Marines: Drop Pods rain on my parade.

All of the players were great and fun to play against and all of the armies looked incredible and all in all made for an excellent experience for my first 40K tournament.

If any of you end up reading this, Thanks for the great time!

While the Chaos Renegades are not complete, I have joined a Paint and Play league at an FLGS and have decided to work on a Khorne-themed Chaos Space Marine army. I have 1 week to change my mind, but as it stands I will be working on those, in addition to my Chaos Renegades, but it will be split duty so both will be going slow.

Had a great time at the tourney, got too meet some fellow dakka-ites. Everyone was real cool, and the scenarios everyone thought were going to be real gay ended up not being too bad.

Good luck with your Khorne CSMs. I look forward to seeing lots of pictures of them.

No new models or paintjobs.. yet, but I bought a new camera and started learning how to use it.

I bought a Canon 50D with a 50mm Macro Lens and the following images are my first test images with the gear. Since taking these test images a few days ago, I have learned a lot more about aperture (for altering the depth of focus) and exposure settings (for capturing more light), so hopefully the next batch of models I paint up will have some good pictures for the next post, but for now here are a few for my own tracking:

Black Legion Rhino

Black Legion Aspiring Champion

Valkyrie

Renegade Primaris Psycher

Necron.. uhh, yeah... This is a Necron Monolith that I own, though this was painted by Shep.

Anyway... this is mostly just for my records in tracking my hobby progress... trying to add miniature photography as part of my hobby set.

Broadside Bash is coming up and I need to adapt my army... I am expecting to paint 3 Vendettas, 2 Manticores, and 2 more Chimeras as part of that effort. Not sure what I will get done though.

The new recruits have started to arrive, but still need to get the appropriate colors:

Still need to build one more Vendetta and two more Chimeras (why couldn't march release of new chimeras been sooner)

Ohhh pretty Manticores. I really like the grim & gritty realistic feel of this army personally I like it without pop which always seems counterintuitive to me. (If I was going into battle I wouldn't want to attract the attention of onlookers!

So I brought my army to Broadside Bash and had a good time for the most part.

I didn't have time to paint up a competitive 2000 point list, so I just brought my 1750 point list with some minor additions:

The list was as follows:

CCS (Plasma Pistol, Regimental Standard, 3x Melta, Officer of the Fleet, Astropath, Chimera)
Primaris Psycher

Psycher Battle Squad (9 Psychers)

PCS (4x Flamer, Chimera)
Infantry Squad (1x Plasma Gun, Ministorum Priest, Commissar w/ Power Weapon)
Infantry Squad (1x Plasma Gun)
Infantry Squad (1x Plasma Gun)
HWS (3x Autocannon)

Veteran Squad(2x Shotgun, 3x Melta, Chimera w/ Hull-mounted Heavy Flamer)

Devil Dog
Devil Dog

LR Executioner w/ Plasma Cannon Sponsons
LR Demolisher w/ Plasma Cannon Sponsons
3x Hydra

As you might see from the inclusion of an Astropath, without anything really interesting to reserve, I just put in models that I had painted and didn't worry about being competitive

I knew I was bringing a knife to a gunfight (maybe not a good analogy, given I am playing guard) and my results showed it. I went 2-2-1. 4 out of 5 of my games were fun.

I am not going to do battle reports since I wasn't being competitive and just having fun with my list. However, I did play the following:

Game 1: Imperial Guard w/ WH Allies, Table Corner Objectives. My opponent also had a "fun" IG list that ran two 30 man blobs with Commissars, 2 LRBT, 1 Vanquisher, 1 Valkyries, and a smattering of Witch Hunter. He was very fun to play. The only problem with this game is that when the time hit 50 minutes, I hear 15 minutes and we stopped with that last turn where we could have easily played another turn. I still managed to get a minor victory and had fun.

Game 2: Dark Eldar. This was my funnest game. Sieze Ground Variant (Cumulative Scoring 3 objectives, middle is worth d3 each turn). I didn't realize it was cumulative scoring until end of turn 1 and I lost this game. It was still my favorite game of the event and I had fun have my hydras light up a raider every turn.... lots of raiders and ravagers here.

Game 3: General Paton's Orks. Variant Annihilation. Was fun themed army. Unfortunately, I play against Orks all the time and I would have prefer to play somethign different, but I still ahd fun. We tied. We had a few rules debates, but this happens and I think we were both ok with how everything went. Regardless, I had fun

Game 4: Catachan IG. Sieze Ground Variant. Played against an army that used a lot of Camo Nettings, Great Themed Army. However, my opponent played incredibly slow... Deployment took forever. He was playing fourth edition line of sight rules for vehicles and I was tired of arguing and was so frustrated that I "gave up." I was so frustrated during turn 1 that I didnt even use half my army and had a horrible experience, by the time we got to the bottom of 3 it was going so slow I just conceded the mission and gave him the major victory. I had NO FUN in this game, I didnt care if I won or not, I just wanted to have fun... I was seriously ready to start throwing my models against the wall and go home Yes... tempter tantrum to the extreme I had better sense than that and just waited until lunch to vent.

Game 5: Tyranids. Almost same as Game 2 for mission. Was really hoping for a good time for my last game and was fortunate to play against an army I usually don't play against and against a fun-spirited player. Learning my lessons from Game 2, I charge forward with my entire oarmy onto the objectives and built up an early lead.. knowing I would soon be crushed by a swarm of monsters. This game went slow, but only because I had so much to shoot and he had so much to move.. I say slow but we both moved fast, so it was still good. End of game, he had some bad dice and could get me of the objectives, so I get a Massacre Win.

Slaughter in Space is next and I want to bring a competitive list next time, so you might actually see some pics of newly painted models soon

Trick for your camera -
Even with a macro lens, you will still get depth of field if you are too close, as can be seen on the tail of the valk shot for example.

I recently went through similar experiments after getting a macro for my Nikon, and like an ordinary lens, if you want to eliminate the depth of field, you have to shoot from further back than you think. Your camera has enough resolution and a good enough sensor that you will get huge shots anyways, even if they look small in the viewfinder. That is of course, only if you don't want depth of field on your shots

@MajorTomm11 - Thanks, this is actually something I have been experimenting with. It funny how one thing then leads to another issue, which actually accelerated my learning. Adjusting the aperature increased the depth of field, but then let in less light, so I then had to learn more about the exposure settings and adjusting lighting. It's been a fun learning experience and still learning more.

Hey, AB.

Congrats on finishing an absolutely awesome army. I've followed this pretty much from the beginning and you're one of the main inspirations for starting my own renegade army, so thankyou!!

I hope you're going to blog you're daemon army here on dakka. Will it be a continuation of the ones you did for ToMG?

Thanks Vitruvian!

Yeah, since the ToMG fell through for me... work and all, I will be sort of taking the basics of what I started for the Khorne Bezerker CSM list and coverting that over into a Chaos Deamons army. I will definitely be documenting it in some for here on Dakka, I will update here to let everyone know where to find that, if not just added on to here

Beautiful, both in the forge world models which look a freaking mazing but also the paint job. It's very simplistic yet the good shading brought out the key details like the captain's green eyes.

Lots o dakka and that is always a good thing.
