I noticed there has been a recent rash of sock puppets cropping up. A sock puppet is an anonymous person who fears to reveal their true identity and hides behind a fake username to launch false accusations, spread unfounded speculation and basically lie. Since we here at Dakka are a community I am interested to hear how others feel about this situation.

How would you propose Sock Puppet culling? Surely, if anything, Dakka is a democracy where people can say what they want, even if it's nonsense. As for the rumours; ignore them until the product is released? Threads such as IG Rumours do nothing for anyone. I could post a preposterous claim about a future army release and see a hundred comments posted about it. Just don't follow the flock.

If these issues incense you, I'd reccommend simply visiting the GW website instead of this one.

Well... If I could throw my two creds in, I think both Bunker and Green were acting childish. We all wind up doing that at some point or another on a forum. It's difficult at times not be antoganistic or become impassioned when talking about a particular subject that rises one's ire.

Not really the same thing. If people were saying all Arabs are stupid, crazy, smelly, etc then it would be the same. But Terrorist is justification for more than just dislike. It says they are murderers and should be locked up, tortured for info on terrorism, considered enemy combatants and acceptable casualties of war etc.

Other forums I frequent don't allow personal discussion and speculation on fellow forum members. You take it to the mods as a private matter not discuss it publically. Same with forum rules queries and challenges to moderator decisions.

I'm quite suprised this is tolerated.

It seems GBF is actually just confused about the difference between a sock puppet and a troll.

A sock puppet is an account set up by somebody to talk about or support themselves in some way. If I set up an account under a different identity and start posting about how wonderful Under The Couch is, or posting to support my own arguments in YMDC... that's a sock puppet.

Not attaching your real name to an account does not make it a sock puppet. That just makes it (for anyone not running a business online that they promote through that account) sensible internet practice.

Setting up an account specifically for the purposes of causing a ruckuss... (And I should point out that I'm not claiming any of that vast list of account were actually set up for that purpose, since I haven't been following the relevant threads) ... that's a troll, not a sock puppet.

It does, however, but a lot of burden on the mods to track down and confirm registrations. I wonder if the trade off is worth it?

This is a semi-public forum in the sense that anyone can join and there are no fees, you just have to follow the rules. We don't even have a formal age limit, which is why the policy on language is fairly strict.

With thousands of users it would not be worth the Moderators' time trying to validate them all in case a few were sock puppets.

To be frank, I misdoubt GBF's accusations of sock puppetry -- he is just having a go at the anti-WC guys.

I've been on Dakka for several years and I don't remember a single accusation of sock puppetting until just now.

You can always just join the French Foreign Legion if you want a new name, you know.

When you buy socks, my suggestion is to buy 4-6 identical pairs. That way, as you lose a few through attrition, you can combine orphan socks and have another pair. If you buy all individual pairs of socks that don't match, if one is lost or gains a hole, you have to throw the whole pair out.

When in doubt, blame Malfred.

I'd agree IF I wasn't more concerned about X government entity or X corporation already leaving laptops with full social security info laying about or neglecting to keep their servers updated and secured or social network sites like Facebook where one's info is already displayed for the taking, or ridiculous password reset conventions weren't already in place (put in the name of your high school to update your password questions anyone? Geeeeez).

Both. I've said before, I played against Team WC at Adepticon two or three years ago. I couldn't tell you who though (I don't think it was GBF, but my team's other pair may have played against him). Of the two guys that I played, one was a lot of fun, and the other was a bit of a jerk (and maybe he was just having a bad day, and maybe he's always like that - I don't know). I don't think the other half of my team had any issues with the other half of their team. So, I think, like most groups and even most people, they're both dinks and fun. Probably a little more on the 'fun' than the 'dink'.

HMBC isn't a sockpuppet, he's like the Carbon Rod from the Simpsons - never does anything, but always gets the credit (or the blame sometimes).

I have no opinion on WC. I've never seen any of them, let alone played against any of them. I see elements of blow-hard-ery on here, but tbh, ALL groups will have those types.

As for sock puppets. I like sooty.

Getting all the regular people on the internet ain't so hard. Getting gamers (IRL or on this interweb thingy) to agree on anything is like herding cats.

Signed on the the WC boards and haven't been flamed or bullied, but I haven't posted anything yet. Actually, they've been kinda quiet the past few days as I can tell. Is there a secret board?

Okay, this thread has gotten pretty far off-topic (I'm not sure it was ever even on-topic), so it is being closed.

If you are ever "concerned" that someone is creating multiple accounts purposely to stir up trouble, contact a moderator or administrator.

We can check user's IP addresses and it is pretty easy to identify when someone has created multiple accounts.
