My Waaagh

It was to be much shorter and less varied than my other projects. I planned to make up 100 or so boyz (sluggas and shootas converted from AoBR) and a few other things; that was a lie. . . I'm way past 'a few other things' now!

Thanks to Ashtar, my army now has some GW approved fluff!
White Dwarf 136, April 1991
'Eavy Metal, page WD52
Stormboyz are rebellious Orks who are youthfully obsessed with drillin', marchin', salutin' and other unOrky behavior. Mostly they grow out of their obsession but a few dire-hards can't give up their disciplined ways and become Stormboy Kaptins or find themselves drawn into one of the Freebooter bands which worship the Blood God Khorne.

Stormboyz rebel against their clan style in the same way that teenagers rebel against the dress of their parents. The older Orks just wait for them to grow out of this phase, putting up with their strange behaviour and youthful enthusiasm.

As part of their rebellion, Stormboyz become obsessed with discipline in their dress as much as in their marchin' and salutin'. Each Stormboyz Korps adopts its own uniform. Shiny polished jackboots, buckles and helmets are common. Such Human-styled military trappings are frowned upon by traditionally-minded Orks.

The blue and grey uniform of the Stormboyz shown here is typical. [...]

Of course there is some slight variation, but the blue uniforms and armoured appearance and overall less-ragtag feel to the horde is in the spirit of the fluff I hope This army was intended and still remains very inexpensive. Almost all of the infantry models are created from AoBR orks, and the trucks and chinork were created using a single trukk kit and some spare bits.

I'll keep the first post of this updated to aid in its photo gallery esque easy of use, but for WIP pics, or further information on particular models, you'll have to either scroll through the following posts, or simply ask! I love questions.

HQ

Warboss "Kappin Crunch"

Warboss "Ram Rod"

Warboss "Wild Waaagh"

Big Mek with a Kustom Force Field

Elites

Nobs all wound allocated to cheese

Lootas

Burnas

Kommandos led by Snikrot

Troops

Ard Boyz

Shoota Boyz

Shoota Boyz

Slugga Boyz

The rides!

Chinork?

Last but not least, well maybe least: the Grots! These actually win more games than any other unit in my experience.

Fast Attack

Deffkoptas

Warbikers (notice any resemblance to the deffkoptas?)

Heavy Support

Scratch Built Killa Kans - I wouldn't have done this if the plastic kits were out at the time.

Looted wagons - What could be more orky than borrowing rhinos from my marines

Battlewagon with impaler

Battlewagon with mulcher

And what are the getting all dirty fight over?

Thoughts welcome

As of May 19, 2010; I have 4 more of each lootas and burnas to paint up so grant me somewhat functional squads and 5 flash gits with badrukk that I converted. Those last 6 gent won't be finished anytime soon as they absolutely stink on the tabletop.

I'm excited to see what rules the chinork has though. Maybe just a fast open topped skimmer but who knows.

Edit: Images reposted May 19, 2010 with better photography

Alpharius: One of the stickies in modelling has a list of dakka articles, and one is for rivets with spots of PVA glue - it seemed to work alright but I'll probably use plasticard on the rest.

Balance: Yeah I agree, the legs are a bit thin, but as they're free models from my bitz box, I don't have a million spare pistons lying around. I have a ton from old IG tanks but they're used on the arms (poor picture angle you can't really tell they're there). Also the pelvis has pistons to it just not the scrappy legs.

!?: Yeah I don't think the Mek's cared too much about making the kan's too stable - they do afterall blow up on an immobilized result

porkuslime: The main body is a 1" tube of PVC pipe (I think that's the matterial) It's a nipple for sprinkler systems. The plastic glue I used didn't have the best bond to it - and superglue had a hard time bonding as well since it's such a smooth surface (even with roughing it up) so the next batch will be wrapped in thin plasticard and the plastic tube will essentially provide only form and support.

Thanks for the comments, they're sitting outside drying right now. Once I either paint them up or construct the next 3 I'll post more pictures. Again, is anyone positive on the current base size for killa kans? I've heard they switched from 40mm to 60mm but no one is positive that I've asked.

Looks like you had a lot of fun making them. I would suggest getting a leather punch like I did at a craft store for around $10 us. The get some thin plasticard and punch away. My punch has 6 different heads so i can choose the size rivet I want. I also used an old VCR case. (plastic) worked well for me. Nice job on the kanz and good luck with the rivets. They are a pain putting on. Maybe use a gel type super glue and dot them on. Less spillage and mess of super glue.

My Scratch-built Waaagh - Digitally Remastered (New Photos Pg1) @ 2009/02/20 18:58:49

Post by: TheAmbit

Fletch: Thanks for the tip on the leather punch. I should have gotten one of those for my warhound titan - It's finished now but easy rivets would have made it look much better I think.

So I'm fairly certain that these are going to break if I drop them I need to pick up a small drill and pin the parts that attach to the PVC (as they break I guess). Since I'm not going to pin each rivet, I decided this set was done and did a quick paint job on them. Drybrushed on boltgun + chainmail then a wash of brown. Nothing fancy but with another 100 boyz to paint I can't be choosy!

The next six will definately be wrapped in plasticard so that the glue adheres as best possible. If you look close you can see the white glue rivets on the red kan.

The blister pack Killa Kans come with 40mm bases.

The newer box version ships with 60mm bases.

The Dread is on a 60mm base so I can't see the much smaller Kans looking right using
the same one, though the rules say you can always go bigger, I believe. Use whatever
looks better, depending on your specific models.

Although, Killa Kans technically don't have to be on bases at all. They're vehicles.

The PVC is a pain to glue - I used some like that for exhaust nozzles on my Thunderbolt scratchbuild and had to load them up with superglue to get them to stay in place. As far as rivets go, I'm a big advocate of buying 1mm plastic rod (or for orks a couple different mm and shapes - round, hex, etc.) and slicing the rod into rivets. It's worked great for my Hellhound conversion so far. And hasn't taken me nearly as long as I was afraid it would.

Did it make a huge mess? My fear wouldn't be the time commitment, but that little dabs of glue would overshadow the plastic - perhaps because I use GW glue which can't be applied too precise. I guess the brush on stuff would work wonders?

Those are sweet looking Kans. Thanks for posting them. I've been looking for an alternative to spending $22 for an ill fitting piece of garbage metal GW version.

Are the arms made with Sprue parts??

My Scratch-built Waaagh - Digitally Remastered (New Photos Pg1) @ 2009/02/26 19:36:18

Post by: TheAmbit

Yup the arms are just sprues filed down and cut to the right angles to look alright - with the appropriate weapon added to the end. Simple as mud

PS - I agree, being Canadian they're $35 here - so I saved myself 210 bucks.

almost makes you wonder why GW dont do a plastic box set, 3 kans for £25, with different options.

would be a better deal for all, and would make them worth using.

All of my orks came in yay! So after chopping up a ton of them (need more shootas) I've got 20 1/2 done, 20 more assembled, and a completed warboss!

I was painting him along with the rest of the squad, but as he neared completion I couldn't help but finish him ahead of the rest of the ladz. Mind you he does require a lot more attention to detail than I'm paying to my boyz, and was a few hours work - how many episodes of x-files went by in the back ground?

I made him a tri-hat out of greenstuff to try out a simple method I read about. I wanted the warboss to look slightly different than everyone else's AoBR boss so I added the hat, and chopped off one of the pistols and the boss pole (since he'll never have one bought anyway). A few extra shoulderpads as well, more of a madmax look. Anyway I should get back to painting thest boyz if I want the list I thought up ready for thursday.

Well I couldn't resist making a battlewagon with the new kit, so here's my conversion. I wanted it to look like a semi-truck so I added wheels where the tracks were, two stacks for exhaust, and a hitch in the back. The ram has spikes which I magnetized for easy storage, and which I will probably count-as a deffrolla (hence the 6 spikes).

I tried to make it look beat up like old metal, let me know what you think.

I like the dreads. They're a bit spindly looking in the legs department, but that really only adds to their appeal IMO. They look even better painted up.

The battle wagon looks great so far, I like the weathering effects. However, it looks like it would benefit from some different coloured detail work on some of the larger areas.

Good looking dreads! The Pirate hat is top notch! I like what you did to the battlewagon kit as well. I wonder if 2 part epoxy would stick to the PVC pipe, thanks for the idea on a main body for killa kans! I bought one of the kan blisters, the legs don't fit right and it took for ever to get the thing to stand. I recomend the larger bases, my metal kans legs kept falling off when I tried to secure it to the 40mm.
great job!

I play weekly at one of the local GWs and I like to vary my list from week to week. This inevitably leads to more models haha.

My newest addition will be two trukks to go alongside the battlewagon boyz.

As always, I try to cut corner and save some dough. For these two trukks I've used a few spare bits from a stompa and a few other sources, but for the most part I've made two trukks out of one!

The biggest and most important bit would have to be the two spare wheels but also very important is the tau ion cannon engine! Some nice v6 power for the lads.

C&C welcome

Very fitting conversions as everything seems to be in place.

Are these comparable in size to the official trukk (the first one seems slightly smaller)?

Yes they're the same size, I made sure to keep the footprint the same. The 'smaller' truck is probably the one with the ork trukk engine right? That one is using the proper trukk frame with the box made out of plasticard cut to the same size as the actual model. So the only size difference would be in height perhaps, by about 1/2 an inch. Then the 2nd truck was made to size with the first. I wish I could give you a proper comparison to the real thing but I don't own one.

Glad they look ok

I painted up 12 more boyz to run in one of the trukks. I made sure they all had helmets and shoulderpads so I could claim they were 'ard boyz if needed. Maybe I'll eventually do up the rest to fill the squad to 30. Also the yellow helps set them apart from the rest of the black armoured boyz.

The yellow I hope looks ok and not too clumpy. It was a basecoat of Astronomican Grey because that's all I had, with sunburst yellow in 3 coats that I would say I semi-drybrushed on.

I'm running a poll, I have a 10man unique wound allocation nob squad to paint up, and I'm wondering if I should stay true to the army's colour scheme of blue pants and black armour, or if I should go with my newest squad's yellow armour. I'm not sure if it would start to look odd if too much of the army was 'bad moon' like instead of one squad. I know what I'd like to do, so I'll see what the handful of people who answer have to say and either feel good about my decision, or put more thought into it

Please vote!

ive always thought of this kind of idea is of all the differents mobs in your army having different colours but a very basic scheme to tie them together......

now for your poll i thought that why not choose a few nobs from each mob and paint them the squad colours with the basic scheme to tie them together.... itd be like the best of each squads get thrown together in a nobs squad?

After finishing a tau objective marker for a modelling competition I failed to enter, I figured I'd browse the net, get some inspiration and make 5 objective markers for my orks.

First the tau objective, which is quite a bit more extravegant than the ork ones. It's a downed ethereal that was being ferried around the battlefield by his honourguard. The ethereal is modelled after the 4th ed Codex cover art.

And then the 5 ork objectives.

The objectives are as follows: (A few ideas were stolen from Dakka threads)
- Two of them are 'top secret entrances' to underground orky bunkers.
- One is a fuel stash, because these boyz don't have time to drill for their own and something has to run the kans!
- One is some extra secret info that was dropped when the messenger suffered an 'accident'.
- And the last is a big red button! My mob can't help themselve but try to press anything that's bright and shiney, even though we're unsure as to what it even does. My opponents MUST attempt to prevent whatever it is from happening

Here's some ork nobs I finished this afternoon. With an astounding upset in the poll of 3-2 (one of those being mine) I went with yellow.

They're modelled WYSIWYG so I can abuse wound allocation. I've run them in a few games and while a strong unit, at 365 points excluding transport they are by no means broken. They die quite readily to blast templates, missile launchers, powerfists/claws and anything else strength 8 or higher. They do however punish tau quite well as they're disadvantaged in the str 8 category. Losing a nob to a railgun shot isn't bad as there are not many of them.

After taking the photos I can see a lot of areas where the brown wash pooled horribly so I'll probably correct that by adding more battle damage in those areas.

I found a few hours to paint up one of the trukks (it stares at me all unpainted on the top shelf of my case). Now I think my plan will be to toss regular nobs in there, not boys but we'll see how that fairs. I want to try out 9 nobs, a bigmek and two wagons full of boyz in 1000 points. Probably won't work too well but will be fun.

I'm going to pick up another wagon as I only have one, and after watching T4, try and make it into a big rig wrecker type truck with the ball and chain. I'm excited.

I'm a little disapointed as the photo shows off a lot of mold lines I didn't notcie before :( Oddly the paint looks like 'tin bitz' but it's boltgun + chain mail + flesh wash + delvan mud.

I painted up another trukk, but havn't grabbed a photo yet. However, I've been working on another battlewagon with a custom deathrolla. I wanted it to look like a looted highway snow blower, so here is a WIP shot.

Nice strong bold colours very orky.

Is it the Glaze or 'ardcoat making them a little shiny ?

Thanks man. I usually take the photos prior to 'ard coat, so they gloss is from the washes. They all get dull coated afterward rest assured

I finished off 8 more ork boyz to fill out another 20 man squad for a battlewagon, and at the same time painted up the other warboss I did some minor modelling to from AoBR. Keeping with my current theme of 'badmoon-esque' orks, I figured he should be yellow, seeing as how my other warboss is not.

I repositioned the arm with a little GS, added armour plating in a few important areas, added a chainsaw to the claw and gun (inspiration Gears of War) as well as a flamer, added a barret and lastly a squig. I guess I need to take a few side shots.

My next contribution to my Waaagh will be a biker squad converted from Deffkoptas. I've got two finished at the moment, and need to pickup some spare wheels to finish the rest. Sometime soon I'll also re-photograph my entire ork army outdoors to provide better images.

The Deff Rolla/Snowplow is one of the best Ork conversions I've ever seen! And consider the "Sekrit" box idea looted!

You're more than welcome to steal any idea you'd like, and I'm glad you enjoy the deff rolla.

I found some time to play around and couldn't help but add a bit more tau-sleek lines to my army. So first up is 3 warbikers from deffkoptas of which I need to make two more (I'm limited by spare tires).

Next are some tau parts put to good use. I mean, Wazdakka can move farther and shoot than the pirhana ever could!

I plan to paint the normal bike squad in 5 different bike colours and maybe paint a number on them so they look as though they were just in a race. The Warboss bike will likely just be red to match the rest of my vehicles. I mounted the one giant gun to the side of the pirhana since I doubt anyone would ever bother to care about the WYSIWYG on an ork anyway and it looked sweet.

I have the 6 various bikers completed and primed, those are next on my list.

I was looking through the ork codex and decided it would be quite easy to make some looted wagons from my marine whirlwind and predator (which can be dismantled for use as rhinos) thereby adding utility and variety to my ork army without buying any models (or destroying anything the Emperor may need later).

I have the most round-about way of painting these things; it's not tin bitz but boltgun metal + delvan mud + flesh wash + chainmail. . . I really should invest in some tin bitz. . .

ZacktheChaosChild wrote:It's good but I would have put some orky bitz on the looted tanks. They just don't seem orky enough...

I'm not sure I explained it well enough. . . The rhinos are from my marine army, and are STILL part of my marine army. I don't wish to destroy them, just have the rhino hatch removable to drop in the cannon for when the orks take them over; therefore usable in both army lists. If I add a bunch of garbage to them then they won't fit in the marine list, but as is, there is no reason the looted hull can't be mostly intact.

I sat down and slowly painted these guys doing about 1 shade a night over two weeks. I just havn't had the motivation to paint lately or when I have my cat has been quite against it.

Anyway, here are some shots of the warboss and his stolen ride. His bulk doesn't look too out of place from this angle I hope. I also added an extra panel to give the illusion of width to the gun side of the bike (as suggested).

Here's a shot of the whole group

And last but not least, a close up of a boy and his toy, an RC gun drone (counts as twin-linked dakka gun)

Here's my take at converting an AoBR nob into a Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun.

So the Skull cannon will count-as a Shokk Attack Gun (using the life force contained within human skulls pillaged from the battle field as an energy source if anyone asks) So no snotlings, just human skulls shot through the warp and whatever daemonic entity chooses to poses them on their journey through.

Here are some various angles:

Looks pretty god to me, except... where do the snotlings get in?
The mix of bits is great. Where did the pot of skulls come from?

There are no snotlings .

The skulls are cut off of ork heads (with the hair bands removed), and the pot is the back half of an IG tank's search light.

There are only six skulls though so hopefully there is no turn seven

It's a good bit-bash and works on it's own merit, but I'm not sure it screams shock attach gun to me. The 3 ball rotating thingie is pretty iconic for me... I can understand not wanting to bother with the snotlings but without the front balls (stopped writing to giggle like 10 year old at that one lol) it is missing something for me.

Not so much a criticism as just my opinion, it's just a preference thing for the visual style of that one weapon. Apart from that, thats pretty awesome work!

Looking at this on a different computer and the photo is quite dark, my appologies. I'll ensure they're brighter next time.

I've attached the landind skids and some other bits. Still should add some rivets in random places though.

I also made a flying base. I realize it will ruin my cover save chances but what good is a flying car that can only hover? Besides, that is what a KFF is for!

I'll post a better photo when I get the chance. I think I'm going to leave off a stabilizer prop in the back. It doesn't really fit well (right now the model is about the size of a trukk) so I don't want to make it any longer. Trying to count it as a battlewagon would be a little weak as it definately looks like an AV 10 ramshakle junker. . .

I figured I should slowly fill out all of the codex slots, I mean that is what they're there for!

So here are some Kommandos I've made from AoBR boyz and a nob as snikrot. Keeping tradition, I've made some hats to help them blend in with their surroundings (which apparently doesn't work on desert rock!
I would have given their skin camo but I wanted more than just the base to tie them into the army.

I don't think you're "stretching it" at all.
that being said, I don't think it looks that great.
The feet are just... wrong.

If you're going to do it, cut & reposition the feet and greenstuff the ankles so that the feet aren't "flat," but fit the angle of the drone.

I like the antenna/joystick!

I think its pretty plane what he is supposed to be, but it needs to be more ork-ified. Instead of going through all the trouble of repositioning the legs, just add some plasticard and other bits until he can stand flat, and its orky enough, but still let the drone show through.

Crazy idea, but maybe you could just strap the gun drone to the orks back?
That way it looks less like hes surfing on it. You could even make a mix in the units, some surfing others just holding on and some with the drone nailed to their shoulders.

I really enjoy the Hat this Ork Wears and am glad to see another going through the trials of painting a swarm of the green TIde!
