Hi to all, it´s my again!
Long time ago I read a W40K novel, "Warriors of Ultramar" (Graham McNeill). The Ultramarines fight against tyranids in Tarsis Ultra planet. A lot of tyranids were defeated by the power of the Ultamarines... and I need to put it into a diorama.
In that book the battle was in a snow field, but I decided to represent it into an urban environment. An ultramarine rhino was surrounded by hordes of tyranids while an epic ultramarine captain, Uriel Ventris, defend the vehicle with his life.
I couldn't wait anymore and I paint the RHINO, the main character of the diorama.
I have realized such important damages in the small tank: breaks in the lateral doors and back and, in addition, I have added it a few small details, as a kit of spades (extracted of a tank on 1:35 scale) and a series of antennas and cables that I have had to remove for the process of painted.
I have used a method of painting based in applying the paints in blows of paintbrush to give it an effect of real spoiled metal, with spots of color.
The "recipe" for the Rhino's blue is the following one (all the paints are from Vallejo, Model Color, with spanish names):
- Azul Prusia (ref 70965, Vallejo): applied to airbrush,
- Azul Oxford (ref 807, Vallejo): strong wash,
- Azul Americano (ref 903, Vallejo): first blows of paintbrush marking the first lights,
- Blanco Calcio (ref 73006, Train Color, Vallejo): mixed with the color base and the colors of the first lights,
- Turquesa (ref 966, Vallejo): blows of paintbrush to give variety to the sheet,
- Pátina Verdín (ref 832, Vallejo): blows of paintbrush to give texture to the sheet,
I added Oxide (ref 73001, Train Color, Vallejo) to made rusted areas but it isn't finished yet.
FIRST STEP
I want to do a very real scene, as a IIWW diorama. That's why I do a street with buildings of brick walls, not as the usual metal buildings.
I made the walls and the floor with a modelling material that is made with paper (in Spain was called DAS putty). All the bricks were handmade (about 3000!).
SECOND STEP
The fachade of the building was finished, and I began with the indoor area. I used many accesories extracted of a 1:35 scale kit; you can see a lot of tools, boxes...
It was time to put some rubbles in the street, like the building was falled down and I added a little area with grass too.
Here you can see my own idea of the scene... (the Imperial Fist marine isn't the marine of the scene).

Looks great to me and seeing what you did with that tank I know that the rest of the painting will be just as good.

Post by: Connann
THIRD STEP
I began with the paint work; I tried to do a real brick scheme on the wall, and it was very difficult!
I painted indoor area and the street too, always trying to make it so real.
FOURTH STEP
In that moment I paited some details and tried rust effects, like the imperial eagle on the wall, the street lines... and I put any tools: cans, wires...
FIFTH STEP
I decided to added a new building in the diorama, because it needed urbanity. I made another building as you can see... with modelling putty again.
DIORAMA TODAY...
Well... I paint the "new" building and I take some pictures to the terrain (with the rhino).
I hope you like it!

Rryann, the work is still in progress and I don't know exactly time... but I think it takes me about one month and a half.

Great weathering and damage on that Rhino.
The only thing I'm not too sure on is the buildings. They are a bit too antiquated for a 40K universe maybe?
They are fantastically made and painted for sure, but the seem a little too 20th Century?
That said you could always use the isolated planet low tech arguement.

I really like the real world subtlely 41st millenium look to the building. I looked at it and could almost swear blind I'd seen that building. Can't wait to see the nids and the ultramarines on the diorama. How many of each are you planning to use?

Excellent work. Nice masonary skills on the buildings.
The space marine on the rhino is screwed. I was wondering earlier in post what all that damage on rhino was about til I saw bugs enter picture. Very scenic. Brings a whole new meaning to "And They shall know no Fear".

I love those ruins, I wish I could make terrain with that level of detail. I like your choice of minatures too, complete with guardsman going through the "I am not a space marine" phase. When can we expect to see more?

Thank you very much about your comments and sorry about my absence (I've got internet problems!!)
Gundam-Mecha, you are right about the 20th century appareance, but I want to do a mix between historical and fantasy dioramas. GW says that in the W40K you can find techpalnets or prehistoric planets. This is fantasy! But you're right,
Covenant84, maybe, but I don't know when! I want to go to a Golden Demon contest,
Dfanny, thanks a lot!
Llamahead, you've ot the blind in the new building! I'll use about one ultramarine (Captin Uriel Ventris) anda about... 50 tyranids!!
Old Man Ultramarine, you're right! That´s it!
Model collector... I don't know how I'll do Uriel conversion yet...
Paul Atreides... thanks! And you've got new updates!
Captain Shrike, Goon3423, Grimvaril, Ghost in the Darkness, Defcon56... thanks!
--------------------
Yes, I have a lot of work with the tyranids and the other stuff, but I'm in the right way I think.
Today I show you my latest news:
1.- I do another window glasses, because I want a realistic effect, broken by a bomb impact. I used plastic painted with the airbrush. It seems better aren´t it?
2.- I continue with the new building details. I do the floor and the windows with wood (it's fantasy, all you want to do becomes real!) and added new details, like the blind. I'm working a lot on this small house!
I hope you like it!

Hey Connann, its really coming along well.
Actually it looks like something right out of Xtreme Modelling magazine, has a real high quality Scale Modeling quality to it. I was expecting to see a Tiger 1 or a KV-2 next to those ruins!
At first I hadn't realsied that the buildings were a scratch build. I'd assumed it was a set. Astonising work I must say, and the windows are also fantastic work.
If you ever want ideas for dioramas I'd reccommend Xtreme Modelling, it has some fantastic work in it. It is also a Spanish mag. Actually on that note there is some amazing modelling talent in Spain, as your work rightly proves!
Would love to see some of your historical models also!

------
I'm here!!
Last week I showed you the paint work of the "new" building. Today I painted the "old" one, the brick factory.
I repainted the original rubbles scheme and I put a lot of minidetails, like gas cans, some papers (I put the front of the Marca (spanish sport newspaper), with the FCBarcelona design on it), some bricks, boxes and many other things. I think that these details brings realism to the scene.
On this building I tried to do some trial or weathering effects, with rust and other techniques. I want to represent a very old factory destroyed by the strenght of the war. I like very much this building, because the other one was cleaner.
I hope you like it!

I take a break, because I was very tired with this terrain work. But today I work on it and I just finished it.
I can say that the brick building was finished, all the floors. I painted them with natural colors and detailed very much, with broken glasses, ammo boxes... The street has been finished too, but I'm waiting to paint all the miniatures (about 50 tyranids) to do the final details.
I hope you like it and remember... next update will be about the miniatures!

God I love this one, you've inspired me to do something similiar after I finish my blood ravens. My next project after super clean marines are some diorahams of some super weathered ones like yours!
I'm sure about that newspaper thingy tho, it sort of breaks the realism, maybe you could try printing out some newspaper like decals and applying them to the newspaper pages instead? ^^
This should ef be a golden daemon top 5.
As for people sayin it looks too modern, the Imperium stretches over worlds in all levels of technology. This could be a poor backwater world that is still closer to our level of technology in the 'peasant' regions of the planet, like an agrarian world the Imperium keeps at a lower tech level to prevent uprising etc, or a newly conquered world brought back to the imperium that was a lower tech lvl, etc.

Yeah, I'll explain again the newspaper details; you can see the front of a spanish sport newspaper called Marca (its symbol is a big red M) and in the front I painted the FCB (Futbol Club Barcelona) logo. maybe in the 40K millenium, they have got a Techno Messi soccer player, jajajaa!

I can't find words to properly describe this. your attention to detail is bordering on insane. cannot wait to see this piece finished.
This is a museum quality recreation of Uriel Ventris's last stand? I cannot remember if he lived or died, its been a while since i read the book. I will assume though with the number of nids there is a no.

This is absoultly fantastic! The amount of detail in this is amazing.
There is only one thing that I would suggest, and that's to make the Imperial Eagle stand out a little more on the building. I realise you can't higlight it too much because of the effect it has, but pick it out just a little. But that is a small thing in comparison to your work! I can't wait to see this finished, I love the book.
12158

Sicarius, thanks for your advice.
After the terrain work, I clean all the plastic miniatures. You are going to see just a "trial version" because I need to fix the composition mistakes.

That is really quite amazing. How did you originally plan out the diorama? I'm interested in maybe making one.

Are you going to make Uriel Ventris truescale? I think you should give him a cape thats been torn up and ripped!
12158
Post by: Connann
Thanks to all!
Unclehomefries... in this thread I tell my own way to make a diorama. There are a lot of ways, but that's just mine! I'll explain you better if you want.
S.j.mccartney, I'll use the original GW ultramarine... but I'll paint a weathering ultramarine, not a new one! jajaja!
Now I'm working on the tyranid color scheme... and I need a real one!
The terrain has a lot of natural colors, like the red (bricks) or grey (concrete); that's why I use these colors in my tyranids. I think it's a very good urban camouflage for these aliens.
I hope you like it!

That gaunt is beautiful, i love the colour scheme.
any chance of a tutorial for that colour scheme?
12158
Post by: Connann
Thanks WSL!!
To get that colour scheme I used these paints:
base: Black Chaos ( GW) + Burnt Umber (Model Air, Vallejo),
tyranid armour: Terracota ( GW) + Sand (ref. 075, Model Air, Vallejo),
shadows: Charadon Granite ( GW, Foundation),
tyranid skin: Sand + Light Sand (Tamiya),
details (eyes, tongue...): Iyanden Darksun ( GW Foundation), Warlord Purple (ref. 14, Game Color, Vallejo)
A new tyranid image... yeah! I painted 5 of them!

As always, your painting skills are breath taking, My only gripe is that you seem to be using a standard marine and not a truescale. He's the center of the diorama after all so he should recieve extra attention and modelling work.
12158
Post by: Connann
Thanks, thekingofdinner! I'll use the original marine scale, not a converted miniature, because the rhino's scale is according with the original miniature. If I change the scale, I'll have problems with the rhino and the buildings, made with the 28 mm. scale. But your idea is very good!
I'm working very hard at this moment, because the end is close... but I'm very tired, that's true.
I post you my latest update, the paint of 12 tyranids. The color scheme and the style are very personal, I know it, but I tried to adecuate it with the terrain, like a real environment camouflage.
These pictures shows you the update, but there aren't the final pose of the minis. It just an example.

Goliath, Wolf, thanks for your C&C! I'm agree with you, but I must say that the scale of the diorama (all of its elements) is according with the 28mm. GW scale. Thanks again for your C&C!!
Just a little! These are my favourites words in this moment!
After 4 months of hard work, I'm here again with the "Warriors of Ultramar" diorama. It's about 95% of progress, and I'm very happy with it.
First of all I'll show you my own Uriel Ventris version. I tried to do an heroic marine against the tyranid hordes.
I painted it with the colors of the Ultramarine Chapter, very similar with the rhino, but not so spoiled. I'm very happy with him, because it seems like a classic god, with his short hair and furious face.
The main scene in the diorama is the battle between the ultramarine and the tyranids, but I decided to put another little scene in the top of the brick building. An Imperial Guard talking with his walkie talkie. A real human action, in the middle of the battle.
And finally, the diorama!
It needs a few details, like paint with dark tones the terrain posters' and fix the mistakes.
As I said along all the project, I tried to do the attack of the tyranids against an ultramarine rhino, and in the top of it, the battle with Uriel.
I put 2 main tyranid groups: one in the left and the other in the right, as 2 strong walls that are closing. And in the middle of them I put a few tyranids, because I needed a union between the two main forces.
The composition is like a pyramid; in the ground we find the little tyranids, and in the middle an upper areas, we find the bigger and lethal tyranids.
As you can see, the main action is the shot of Uriel to the tyranid.
I hope you like it!

Great work Connan this is really coming along. Looking brilliant.
If I had any crit it would only be two small points regarding the human figures.
The Guardsman in the window on the top floor of the building is a great idea, but right now he is hiding behind the wall and not looking. He feels isolated from the action and withdrawn. To my mind he would look much better if he was interacting with the scene. Leaning over the window edge and looking at the marine in awe as he battles the aliens.
The Space Marine while really well painted... the pose seems to lack something. Its a bit of a crude pose and lets the figure down a little I think. It would be lovely if his chain sword arm had a little more motion or dynamic posing. Like he had just used it, cleaving a tyranid in half or blocking a blow.
What do you think?

dananananaaaaaa I'm Lovin' It
I do have to say that I agree with gundam here, have him cleave a nid right down the middle (diagonal from one shoulder downwards the opposite leg) and spray blood ^^,

LOL,very nice work.I would agree though that him bringing his chainsword down in a wide and bloody are an smashing up a nid would look more awesome.

Thanks, Dakka Dakka friends!!
I was very tired and I take a little rest!
Maybe next week I will show you the final pictures, because the diorama is now finished. Wow, I can't believe it!
-----------------
Gundam, thanks again for your polite and very good comments.
I decided to put the IG in the top of the building, because I don't want to show him like an important character inside the action; people must find the IG while they analize the diorama,
Finally I decided to put the ultramarine in that pose, because I want to represent the moment when Ventris kills the first tyranid and rotate to kill the other one (with his bolter gun). I represented a dramatic pose in other of my works, that's why I put this "relaxed" pose on my ultramarine. It's the beginning of the (bloody) storm...
Müller, thank you! As I said, I represented that action in one of my latest works, and I tried another effects this time...
Deff, thanx! I don't want a gore action. A lot of blood maybe will spoil the terrain work...
Dreadnote, IAmTheWalrus, Sarrazon, Disjointed, thank you very much! You're very polite!
Lanman... it's a pity, yes... I hope you can see it anyday...
Big mek, thanks again! To get the impact in the nid, I used plastic; previously I warmed a little needle with a lighter, and after that, I put it in the correct wounded area. The needle must be really hot, because when you put it into the plastic miniature, the plastic will be deformed. You must be patient, because you must sculpt the wound while the plastic is hot. It's a little annoying, but it's very realistic effect!
99MDeery, hahahaha! Thanks for your very good comment!
Regards...

* To get that colour scheme I used these paints:
base: Black Chaos (GW) + Burnt Umber (Model Air, Vallejo),
tyranid armour: Terracota (GW) + Sand (ref. 075, Model Air, Vallejo),
shadows: Charadon Granite (GW, Foundation),
tyranid skin: Sand + Light Sand (Tamiya),
details (eyes, tongue...): Iyanden Darksun (GW Foundation), Warlord Purple (ref. 14, Game Color, Vallejo)

That's the end, the final post of my latest diorama project. Finally, 4 months after, I finished it.
It was a hard work but your comments (forums, blog...) gave to me the "power" to finish it. Yes, I want to thank you for your comments (polite and critic), because all of them were added into the process.
There are a lot of people who helped me a lot, but in this post I can't write all of them. That's why I decided to put the name of the forums, because this work is yours too.
Thanks again for all!!

Absoultly stunning. Fantastic piece of work, from one of the best GW novels. I don't think you could've picked a more awe inspiring moment from the book, and it's brilliant what you've done with it. Great job, I hope to see more from you in the future

Holy Crap this is Epic! i just started reading this one and if the diorama is this good i can only hope the book is just as great!
one thing im gonna say about Uriel shooting the Tyranid, it would look awesome if you could wip up a quick muzzle blast out of some green stuff or something to really make that boolt pistol feel as menacing as it is!

That is really amazing work man, my only crit is with the walky talkie cord, it is wayyyyyyy to thick, thicker than a mans wrist. try wrapping the wire around another piece of wire to make the coils, or use a guitar string and stretch it out. i love all the little details youve done, the shell casings, the peeling wall paper, even painting the inside of that building(the first one) to look like my game room(peeping conan)/war room.
Amazing stuff

Wow, that is awesome. I love the weathering, and I love the narrative of this piece. A good diorama should really tell a story, and I think this one definitely does.
I can just imagine that Imperial Guardsman frantically calling in an artillery strike on their own position as the space marine makes his final stand.
Great stuff.

I loved that novel! There are only two things I can think could have been different if you are basing it off the particular section of the novel (excluding the whole ice scape that you've already covered) is that the rhino was from the mortifactor chapter (but hey, it's your diorama and if you wanna paint an ultramarine rhino then you use an ultramarine rhino! Artistic license and all that ) the other is I would really have liked to seen your interpretation of Uriel's power sword! But that's just me nitpicking cos I could never do anything that amazing! Truly in awe of such fantastic work!
you sir have my lasting respect!
*edit* Meant to say I also like the fact you left out the gunner and made it all about Ventris, he is one tough S.O.B.! How about a Snowdog diorama? Would love to see what you could do with him and his gang!
