Yes, people I have yet another project going. Really thought combining my Ultramarine blog with this one, but decided too many would want to see Eldar and see SM's and vise versa.
I'm in beginning stages of this project. I've had models for a few months. List of what I have and plan on building.
All done
2- Farseers on jetbikes
2- Autarch on jetbike
2- 10 Warlock Seer councils on jetbikes
4- 6 Eldar jetbike squads
4- Warlocks on jetbikes to attach to bike squads
3- Fire Prisms
6- Vypers
To be done, yet
5- Wave Serpents
50 Dire Avengers
I have 20 of the 50 jetbikes to mould line trim. Everything else needs to be removed from sprue and trimmed.
My plan involves....
Going with Saim Hann scheme. Engine parts primed black, boltgun drybrush, canopy and armor primed black, mechrite red paint, possible blood red drybrush and may use water transfers. Not going with any black stripes, too hard to paint straight. More on this.....
Farseers.... 2 of them. Dire Avenger helmets and Exarch bodies. Close to farseers bodies while staying plastic.
Warlocks....doing 24 of them. 17 get witch blade, 7 get singing spears. Using Dire Avenger heads and torsos for Warlocks.
Bike riders..... doing 24 of them 8 have shuriken cannons. Using Guardian torsos and heads. I see that each box has 2 torsos with boobies. So on principle I have to make one squad of 6 with boobies, lol. That might be enough to mesmerize the regulars I game with during game. At very least the ammo needed to talk smack about being shot up by girlies.
I have 20 Shuriken cannons, obviously not needing all.
Today my shipment came in of Super Mags 130 (a ball bearing and stick with 2 magnets on each end toy). I'm going to use them to magnetize my bases. I have had miserable luck keeping the ball and socket stick from breaking.
Idea is to drill a 3/16 hole into the plastic bases, insert an earth magnet (glued), attach stem, screw a flat head screw into bike and attach to stem. See pics to grasp my plan.
More pics as I gather steam to get this going.

I can either keep the stems as is, 6 different colors, or paint one uniform color. The different colors could be used to mark squads.
The screw you see in bottom pic probably will be cut down a bit more to hide it.
More pictures tomorrow to show some progress

Cool idea.
My friend drilled his Necron Destroyers instead. He sunk a screw into the model and
then just spun the thing around to mount it to the base. I like your idea, though, because
it has Eldar jetbikes!

Me neither. My plan is to screw them in near flush. I didn't do this yet. I just threw some pics together to show my plan.
I got the idea on http://saimhann.blogspot.com

You can probably just glue a 1/4 inch disk magnet to the bottom of the jet bike. It won't be that noticable and it will mate well with the magnetix

Those Super Mags are really strong. I'm not sure glue will keep it fastened. I will see if I can find some smaller screws.

Just cut off the screw part and use the head of the screw epoxied to the jetbike.
Or use a small pin of metal.

My roommate has some magnets thing he got from our FLGS that he uses with his devilfish. It is kind of ugly but not as bad as using screws. I'll see if I can't find the name of them somewhere. Basically it has magnets with teeth so you model isn't swinging back and further the entire time. No worries about them falling off the stand either.

@ plastic people
Yes, I know screws look bad. I didn't screw it into model at all. I'm getting smaller screws. They will be hidden to point of you will have to work to see them.
This is my main project after I get a few things finished.

Post by: grey_death
You should be alright with the screws, the models are small enough and lightweight enough they really won't be a huge issue.
The larger stuff you'll want to have a bit more security though and think of using a magnet set into a drilled hole. As long as you drag the magnets from one another and not pull them straight away, you won't run into much chance of pulling them from their bonds.

Gotta disagree there. I think just doing straight black bases and stems will work fine.

Are you saying paint/prime stems black AND paint clear bases black, too.

Post by: Grunt_For_Christ
I throw my ten cents in for magnets. I'm a firm believer and with how light most of the bikes are I think they'd work fine. That is, if you're going to keep them stock clear plastic. If you do plan on doing that and use the magnets, I say just use spare bitz for the base of the flying stand... Put bodies or parts of building and other things. I've seen that done many time and I like it. It's clean, nice, doesn't detract from the actual bike, and makes it look like it's flying low and fast.
372
Post by: grey_death
I was thinking more along the lines of black stems and normal basing (like any other mini). Black and black would also work fine though. I've never really been a huge fan of the clear bases.

I bought finishing nails, clipped the flat part off and just inserted the nail into the models after drilling a same size hole. The magnets are very strong, I don't think they'll come off. The screw is too big. You could find a washer that may fit just inside the base. Then you could just glue it on to the bike. At that size, shouldn't be much of a problem.

This is how I did the bases for my jetbikes - reasonably easy and without the risk of breaking off the top of the stand. Putty was pit into the hole and then the smaller metal rod was inserted. They hold up quite well, but are a bit of a pain in game as they don't grip so well (fixed with blue tack)...

These go on the end of the stand or use pins that are the same size as the interior diameter of the one up there. ^

I'm starting to realize screws are pain in ass to work with. I want to shorten them so they dn't stick out so much. Simple nip should do job, I thought. Oh no, I need a bolt cutter or hack saw to snip these little gems.
I will try a magnet today. I want something that fits in that 1/8" indentation on top of sticks, as seen in pics above. I want a solid contact point.
Those sticks with magnets on come in 6 different colors. Should I use the colors to seperate squads or go with painting them to have uniform look?
@ tallmantim
I have 50+ bases painted up. I used the small plastic sticks and decided after breaking 7 of them on my Ravenwing landspeeders that they were garbage I need something that's forgiving while being used.
Nice looking bases, though.
@ sonofruss
Great idea you there. I think I'm commited to mags sticks, just need to get something to fit on small area of bike to attach to stick.

This too high? I could drop it 1/2". The wood screws are difinately out. Far too unstable. Could not imagine a Fire Prism on this with screw.
2
372
Post by: grey_death
I would say definitely too high. Try and stick with the regular heights for things like this, especially in 5th with TLoS and all.
Something like this I would definitely look into using more than just screws on this one. You really don't need to be too afraid of magnets on both sides. Especially if you lock it in nicely with super glue and some sort of filler medium (GS would probably work nicely). Also when you take the base from the vehicle, sliding the magnets from one another instead of pulling them apart will help keep your bonds strong.
5762
Post by: Old Man Ultramarine
I have no experience with green stuff. That will be changing very soon. My worry is this. With the strength of the magnets, will crazy glue or the smelly epoxy glue hold the magnet in place? I would like the option to pull bases off for storage. Yes, I will remove carefully by sliding off rather than pulling magnets apart.
10339
Post by: tallmantim
What you can do if worried about magnets pulling off for large pieces is drill out the hole for the magnet (of whatever size) and the put a thin piece of plasticard over the top of it, glued onto the model.
There is no way even a small piece of plasticard could be pulled off from the strength of a magnet.

Do you really need to fill the gap? I'm pretty sure the bike will stay on the top of the rod just fine without the extra magnet.
I agree the WS is a bit too high. Could you cut one of the magnetix to about a 1/3 size and use it?
5762
Post by: Old Man Ultramarine
Seeing that I'm not sold on the visual of the jetbikes on that mag stem I'm going with the 40mm bases. They make the most sense from a gaming standpoint. Lower to ground to take advantage of TLOS of 5th ed 40k. Worst case that the sticks break, left and right, I will use magnet sticks.
5762
Post by: Old Man Ultramarine
What jetbike riders are going to look like. Notice the waist of legs and torsos. I'm going to use greenstuff to make the transfer look better. Adding belt grenades and gear to waist to cover greenstuff. Imagine, people, Imagine.
Riders are going to be painted various combos of black, red, and white. Body gems will be 3 shades of green and 3 shades of blue.

I did this with a Carnifex, inserted the mini-magnets into the arm sockets on the torso, and clipped and used flat head tacks (clipped) for the arms. Works pretty dang good.
However, they are certainly not weight supportable for the jetbikes you want to mount. I concur on the 2-magnet idea.
If you go screw method.. check out jewelry aisles at the local craft store for small (mini) screws.

I concur also with the 2 magnet idea. Leap-frogging on the carnifex idea, I have 4 carnifexes with 15 pairs of weapons that are completely modular. I tried going with tack heads and other forms but it just wasn't strong enough, and that was just for a venom cannon... I say spend the extra money, do the extra work, and be secure and not have to worry about anything else.

I'm sure you can be a little more imaginative with the warlocks though, right?
I mean, WYSIWYG... And I see DA on bikes.
There are gonna be a bunch of opponents out there who are going to be confused in regards to the fact you have identical models with two different names.
You're even using stock weapons from the DA sprue.
I know making Jbike Warlocks is an arse (I have 1.5 of them), but a properly converted jbike 'lock is a thing to behold.
Besides, there was a guy on Dakka recently who mentioned he might be casting a selling some "mounted futuristic elves", so look out for him.
Say, anyone have a link to that thread, I can't find it.
5762
Post by: Old Man Ultramarine
@ Tek
I want to do this project strictly in plastic. My options as to what bits I can use are very limited.
Sure, I'm using the DA bits. The paint scheme is going to be different. Far as I know DA's can't be on bikes and anyone mistaking them for DA's will be sadly wrong.
I do have the metal warlocks, but doing all the cutting and repinning with no possibility of error is not of interest to me. On top of that, I'm still stuck with mostly the same static pose. Sure, I'd like something different, but I'll be happy with the results. And that is what counts.
11766
Post by: Grunt_For_Christ
Exactly... As long as you're happy with it. Who cares if they're only one pose... I just wish they had plastic warlocks. It would open up so many options for EVERYTHING.

Yes, it turned out well.
I scrapped the magnet bases. I like the 40mm bases better. Will be adding static grass, soon. I eyed up that Warlock again and discussed with my buddies. I not even going to bother with it. Far too much work for the limited pose of metal fig.

I came across 11 female guardian torsos. So 11 of 24 guardian jetbikes will have boobied riders. That is pure win.
Went through the FLGS bits boxes that came out of hiding and found 6 banshee arms. So I will have some variety amongst Warlocks.

Sure, the metal warlocks would look real nice on bikes. The kick to nuts is the amount of work to achieve a conversion. I challenge anyone to cut up and whittle down the warlock from picture below, transfer to bike and make look good. Pay attention to neck and left shoulder area. I will get view of back later.

What about using Wood or High Elf torsos and arms for the Warlocks, instead of Dire Avengers? More stuff to buy, but might look good. A guy at my store has some and they look alright. The hooded heads also help it look Warlock-y.
6806
Post by: Gavin Thorne
The wood elf torso/arms are too weedy for the guardian legs and don't look right at all. I tried them with my own exodite conversions and scrapped them. The heads wouldn't look bad though...
Old Man, if your GS skills are up to the task, try adding riding skirts to the legs of the warlocks (flapping in the wind...). Also, you could try adding a "ghosthelm" effect by wrapping a bit of GS around the base of your helmets and adding dots/vines of GS for detail. Refer to the metal warlock pic posted earlier to see what I'm talking about. These little details will help to distinguish the warlocks from your guardians and indicate that the are NOT Dire Avengers. WYSIWYG indeed...
5762
Post by: Old Man Ultramarine
@ Gavin Thorne
You talking about the added mass behind neck?
I'm locked into my Avenger bits for Warlocks. What I want them to look like. They will be painted in a non traditional Dire Avenger scheme plus be mounted on bikes.
I'm using DA Exarchs front torsos for an effect of rune armor.
I'm over $1000 into this debacle. Spending more to do something different at this point seems silly.
My buddy is building almost the same army, but for seer council he is trying to use High Elf Helms and torsos and some robed legs. Haven't seen the conversion, but it will be hard to fit robe with little room on bike.
My thought is robe on bike isn't practical. Warlocks would be parachuted off that pig or caught hanging themselves.
6806
Post by: Gavin Thorne
No worries! I understand completely about the investment and dedication for a specific look for your army. I have no doubt that the DA'locks will look great.
My exodite dino-riders were kitted from guardians and wood elf rider legs. I used a belt of GS to cover the gap where the torso meets the waist and it works well and is easy even for a beginner (which, in my opinion, I am). I also used the grenade and ammo packs to help cover the seam.
Sharp paint jobs by the way, great Samm-Haine colors and heraldry.

Regular scotch tape is good for keeping your stripes straight. Just tape where you want the stripe after priming black and paint the red normally. Then you peel it off and have the most handsome stripes ever!
Also the stripes on your tanks really bother me because the whole model is supposed to be sleek and pointing forward, but the fat horizontal stripes almost give me a headdache. Good luck with your endeavors broton.

Love the hand painted runes! My army is a similar color scheme - I'm subscribing to this thread and you can be sure I'll be referencing it when I paint my jetbikes!

Smoking, love it.
Imagine one day if they make more Eldar plastics what could happen!
Also, I bought Wood Elf Horsemen when I did my similar conversions, and used the bodies and legs on the jetbikes with Eldar helmets and Arms!
Then you can have riders that are actually wearing robes vs Body Armor!
* Checked out this thread from the hardboy thread the OP posted his army in.
Very nice!

I especially like the farseer. Are you planning on having any other special markings on there to really set it apart?

The army looks great-- good to see Eldar getting some love!
Do the bikes come with 40mm bases now? All of mine are the clear 60mm bases. If you didn't put them on the bases they came with you might run into problems at tournaments.
I'll also second the earlier concern about Dire Avengers on bikes are Warlocks. They look more like Autarchs to me. If I saw your army at a tournament I'd ask how you have 20 HQs The main problem for me is no Rune Armor or robes and the helmet is a dead give away.

Once again, what option do we have to make a Warlock conversion in plastic? None!
I did not want to chop up a Warlock metal figure. It would look horrible and the margin for error was very, very small.
I like my councils, everything is WYSIWYG.
Thanks for responses and compliments.
I'm extremely happy I could pilot this army to a 'Ard Boyz prelim title. Hope to continue in 2nd round.

hey.....those look great. I think the idea of dire avenger bodies for warlocks and farseers is a great idea.
I was actually considering selling all my eldar bikes because I couldn't come up with a good way to do this, but I think I am going to "borrow" this idea.
thanks,
Rick

That's a lot of pictures indeed, and good ones too - do you have any full army shots? I have a feeling this army will look pretty sweet in that format. EDIT: Although I guess you are waiting until you are completely finished before taking full army shots

Sheesh, every time I look at a well painted Saim Hann army it makes me want to break out the red paint and change my Ulthwe scheme over to these guys. Consider me tempted again after looking at your latest shots. Thanks for making life difficult

apparently the scorpions or fire dragons did not give him the hint. Or maybe he doesn't play eldar.

Im no eldar player, but im guessing those aspect warriors have thier own serpents

Post by: Old Man Ultramarine
I've decided that I'm doing a very large scale Eldar army.
Each Aspect squad has own Serpent, til I get more Aspect squads than I have Serpents.
Each serpent has a slightly different scheme to it.

Finally received my blue crystal plastic to finish these up. I like the way the blue clashes with Saim Hann scheme.
I will make a new blog when my endless touch-up project ends. Eldar army has alot of base work and magnetizing to be done.
