"Exclusive" until pictures show up on the interwebs the next day or so anyways.

Way too much going on with Vulcan. Don't know what they were thinking... But yeah, Planetstrike. Awesome. I want to see buildings. Also, do you think we'll see a re-release (and maybe a few new) Valhallan models? We got Voystroyans with Cities of Death, so could we be getting some Valhallans to do with Planetstrike? Not plastic 'Great Coat' Guard or any other wishlisty nonsense, but just a re-pack of a basic squad, maybe some re-done heavy weapons, and a new Valhallan Command Squad with a new (or even the old) Chenkov model. Seems reasonable.

is this just Cityfight/Cities of Death revamped for 5th ed or what?

Post by: H.B.M.C.
It's about exactly what the cover says it's about:
"Planetary invasions in the 41st Millenium"
So we're talking sieges, orbital assaults, strongholds, fortresses, defensive lines, and so on. Complete with releases for every race ('cept DH, WH and DE no doubt) and a stack of new buildings.
Should be total awesomesauce.

Believe me I am quite happy to let GW continue to ignore DH and WH, because as soon as they start paying them any attention, the Bland-i-fication will start. Once that happens gone will be the Rogue's Gallery of Inquisitorial units (as terrible as they may be) and soon we'll be greeted with Codex: Grey Knights and Codex: Sisters of Battle. All the Inquisitorial stuff will become "generic" and when someone says 'Mystic' or 'Daemonhost', most people will respond with " What are those?". As an Inquisitorial player I'll be happy if they never touch the books again...

So why the moan about Dark Eldar
494
Post by: H.B.M.C.
Not a moan - I have no interest nor investment in DE, so what happens to them bothers me little - but history shows us that DE always get the shaft. I mean, every Codex in the range has gone through at least two revisions if not three. DE hasn't. But this you know already, so I'll leave that line of discussion there. Let's get back to talking about something far more important - solid info on the new PlanetStrike buildings!!! Does anyone have any? The Warseer threads mentions that the Bastion that's been in a lot of shots now is a scratch build ( ), but the barricades are real. What else do we know?

I don't see what the big issue is. They are a type of model that already exists, so it's not as if they'd be re-doing the whole line. They might update the Heavy Weapons and add some metal Officers, but otherwise they could repackage the entire bunch in a 'Command Squad/Squad/Platoon' series of boxes like the Voystroyans and be done with it.

Vulkan:
Why put the flamer between his arm, and his body? Not only does it look terrible, it isn't feasible from anatomical point of view. The positioning of the spear is equally ridiculous. Its an awkward pose in and of itself, but the pennants suggest that he's pulling it down for some reason. Like he raised it in the air in a fit of emotion, and is now returning his arm to rest. In fact, between the spear and the turning pose, the whole model screams of a character just AFTER he did something interesting. Why sculpt the aftermath?

I think we can safely assume that this is going to be a lot like Cities of Death concerning the models, so probably almost every army (except Dark Eldar and Inquisiton of course ) will get one or more shiney new toys. Probably the Land Speeder Storm and if we're lucky some Flash Gitz models?

I'd say its quite likely that DE get a model release as we know the codex is ready yet its been shelved for the time being. So it makes sense that instead of having models laying around waiting to be released they release it when an opportunity like planetstrike comes along.
Also the notice Vahallan in the lower left corner. Why the heck is he turned away from the Eldar coming over the wall?

I like Vulkan! He just seems to have a rather garish paintjob, like a Games Workshop Trollup. You can have a busy model, or a busy paintjob, and still work, but not both.
Valhallans be damned, I'm more interested in plastic models of those Planetary Defense Lasers in the background. Yum yum.
Yeah, the 'irony' that Guard get so much face time, but usually while getting smacked in the face by something scary, is not lost on me. I guess seeing the Guard do what they do best, hide in cover and shoot, does not make for the most heroic of artwork.
God damnit, I can't wait for GamesDay now. If the rumours are true, GD Chicago should be just before the release, which hopefully means sexy plastic models on display (And maybe for sale?). Woo!

The only bit about the Vulkan model that I do not like (and will probably change) is the throwing stance. An artifact from Vulkan himself would not be let go of lightly. Yeah, it'd be nice if there was a little more defence against deep strikers other than "Free round of shooting once they're on the ground".

The problem with the model is that it has no flow or motion to it.
It's looking to the left. He's pointing is spear even further left, and then pointing his gun in a different direction.

Agreed with AlexCage: the mkain problem with Charleton He'stan as pictured is the paintjob. The pose is kinda awkward, but with the right basing (leaping off a low obstacle) and no cluttery paint, it could look much better.

Honestly, I'm disappointed with their Vulkan. I've seen a lot of conversions for his model and some of the community projects have been a lot better. I'm not sure what it is, it just looks awkward. Maybe it's the things on his spear? I like the gauntlet, and his head looks kinda neat. Maybe it's just the way he's holding it =\ The whole burning lizard on his back is weird too, it looks out of place and just stuck on there. It would have been better to mess around with the backpacks vents or something.

Yeah I'm actually not going to hate the Vulkan model. It's not horrible, but obviously not their best sculpt ever! Considering how omnipresent he is on tabletops everyone's definitely going to favour their own version or have some grand idea of what the perfect model would look like, but still it's pretty nice.
Besides, if anything else it's definitely inspired what I want my Vulkan to look like. I've always been confused at where the handflamer should be.
Planet Strike sounds exciting, I'm more interested in having new bundles put together. While Apocalypse was nice for putting out large tank divisions, sadly most of the really cool ones have faded away. Hopefully Planet Strike brings some new ones!

Agreeing with most about the Vulkan. I like the individual pieces, but not how they come together.
411
Post by: whitedragon
Alot of the "busy-ness" comes from the paint job. I'd imagine the detail on his robe and scales inlaid into his actual armor plates are just painted. As for the pose, the purity seals or whatever coming off the spear look to be going the wrong direction, as I imagine he is hefting the spear up in the air in preparation to throw it.
However, since his arm is extended, it shouldn't be to hard to cut his hand at the wrist, and have him holding the spear straight up and down in a regal pose, which would make more sense with the rest of his pose. That way, he would be kinda looking off to the side, raising his gauntlet to bbq something, while holding the spear pointing up for all of his brethren to take heart of their master's holy relic. Something like that.
It really is a nice mini though. Much better than just about all of the other space marine special characters. (Cassius, Tigurius and Pedro) Thank god I have a jes goodwin sculpted second edition tigurius.

Having spent a bit more time looking at Vulkan I think I've worked out why that spear is a little off,
First the dangly bits(as others have noticed) are a bit gravity defying,
Secondly, everyone is looking at the spear thinking vulkans going to throw it, but I think he might be going to stab something overarm, like just in front of him or on the floor, when put in that context the gravity defying bits are less gravity defying, and honestly, its a chapter relic, theres no way he's ever throwing that spear.
Still love the model so thats 8 of us, but will have to snip the anti grav parchement.
Guessing at the individual components i'm going to bet it's a 4 piece model, seperate spear, backpack, body and head, with the spiderman 'flameslinger' being a part of the body.

Why would IG be almost always stuck on defense? We are great ataackers! Static targets for artillery? Yes please...

I love that Vulkan model! . Not the greatest mini ever, but he's still bloody good. Screw Imperial Guard and their new and shiny codex, I'm going to resurrect my Salamanders. Just wish I hadn't sold them to driverbob25 a year ago

I do too. no thunder hammer gives him a completely different appeal to me. If he readily available, I can see myself buying a few of him, as long as he doesn't ahve a retail price of 20 dollars.. If that's the case, I'll probably settle for one.

I think I need to see the Vulkan model 360 before I can make a judgement. The gun looks kinda clunky to me and the spear arm is a bit weird but that is fixable.

I agree with Fishboy. A lot of the spear problem amy just come from the angle its shot at. Can't decide until I see the arm proper. The "flameslinger" as it's been dubbed ( ) is a little odd but hell at least its different. Something that an army of guys in similar power armour can struggle for sometimes.

I like to take breaks from it now and then though. Smoking skull is only so cool for so long. But I always come back to it.

I noticed this yesterday. I also noticed that only his left arm is covered in the shields, which only adds to the "Super Hoplite" thing he has going on. When you look at the left arm then the right arm, the pose(minus Grav-defying bits) makes perfect sense, especially when compared Ancient Greek artwork covered in warriors with this exact same pose.

The May White Dwarf devotes a page and a half to Planetstrike. Most of it is a picture of Tyranids assaulting Cadians in some of the spiffy new terrain pieces (walls and multi-story buildings in the pic). The pics from Gamesday are also repeated.
Most interesting is the sentence,"...all squads in the attacking force will Deep Strike onto the table, and an even more exciting prospect is that you can field an army purely made of Fast Attack and Elite Choices."
Edit: "...defenders can take double the usual amount of Heavy Support choices and have access to new and powerful types of defensive terrain."
They promise more information in WD354 (July).

SO it's out in July then, presumably.
That's crazy though. Double HS choices? Hi, say hello to all my LRBTs. That's be a crazy high point game though.
I really see this being cmbined with Apoc, rather than a stand-alone game of 2,000 or less 40K.

You're still thinking too small Scotty. What we need is combining Planetstrike with Apoc and Cities of Death to make the ultimate game of 40k
And Hellfury, I'm glad you got your old Avatar back. That flashing Smegghead thing was pretty annoying.

Don't mock Lemartes, he's my favorite $1 model because no one else liked him, and proud leader of the Budget Angels, the Thrifty Sons of Sanguinius! He and his brother in arms Chaplain Special Name are deeply offended ;-) I also must say that my Lemartes looks pretty damn good... mostly because I didn't paint him.
Back on topic however, I like Vulkan except for the spear. Not a fan of the throwing pose. I never imagined the spear as a pilum or generic javelin.

Vulkan is just painted too MUCH. The model looks pretty good, I like it quite a bit. A little work and he is instantly a Grey Knight Grand Master with a Nemesis Force Halberd!

Love the book-cover. I'll have to pick up the book even if I never have a chance to use it. Knowing GW tho, I am kinda surprised the cover art wasn't Space Marines teamed up with Space Marines figthing other Space Marines with more Space Marines coming in from the Space Marine reserves.
The model is pretty bad, tho, and in my opinion, the paint-job makes it look much, much worse.

Exterminatus seems much less costly as an option...but then there would be no need for minis. And the games would be very short.

Just watched 300 again.
The pose on He'stan is very reminiscent of the one after the Captain kicks some butt and clears out the Persians around him.
More a finishing pose.
I think he is attempting to stab, NOT throw the spear. His torso is in a mid-counter-clockwise twist stab motion.
Hopefully we get some other angles. But I think that is what he is supposed to be doing.

Given the position of Hestan's left leg is going off the ground, it can only mean he is winding up to throw the spear. Which is fine and all, but the thing sticking out is blowing in the wrong direction then.
*Not more whine, just discussing the pose.

Which is why I couldn'y nail down the scene. But I recognized it when I saw it. It was sometime after Xerxes talks with Leonidas

If you live in the Netherlands and you're under 40, you're not allowed - legally - to buy space marines. You HAVE to play Dark Eldar.

Hello, Travelocity? Yes, what do you have in plane tickets to... one sec... right, the "Netherlands?" What? Now, I am not familiar with a "flying dutchman"... is that a discount air carrier? No... oh... oh I see... what's that?... well I have AN oven, but I don't know if it is convertable to EU current... oh... oh god... no, I understand... Honey? Come here a second...

It does explain why that fething redshirt tries so desperately to offload those Dark Eldar boxed sets onto us at each visit. It also explains the van out back with the boxes of marines in them.
American tourists are welcome, our canals are big enough for your ignorant asses.
