BACKGROUND:
I've been remodeling my mothers house for 6 months now, all my stuff has been packed up and I'm getting the small scale building bug (laying real tile sucks). So I set up a small workshop to entertain myself when I'm not constructing (large scale). I love big miniture projects. Because I can't set up a paint area-instead of finished other projects like my defense laser, I'll start some other stuff. I can't paint because the big construction just generates too much dust, I'll have to wait until my model room is complete before I paint.

PROJECT:
I've got a bunch of COD stuff I want to build, I figured I would start with a 2'x2' city block with a ruined cathedral. I've been playing with some designs in Google SketchUp (great program!). I've never played with a building in which you could put troops in, due to the size of this piece I was thinking about having the first few floors in tact with the top and on side destroyed.

Here's my dilemma; should I ruin the complete interior, or have floors with shooting points? If it is destroyed, I could still leave catwalks, from a gaming perspective, is there any benefit to keeping an entire floor in tact?

Here is the initial idea for the first level.

Added more to finalize my mock-up, I high-lighted the area which I think would be good to destroy.

Here is some of the main interior, I'm thinking that I'll do the catwalks and some stairs with the rest in rubble. I'm still not sure if any of the other levels should have anything on the interior.

And here is one for scale. There are more images in my gallery if you want to see more views.

Upon thinking about what I've already got ready, I'm reducing the size to 1'x2', I think this gives it more of that Gothic church feel.

Hey they look great, if you execute them properly they will look even better in RL, notrhing beats the old half destroyed cathedral on a battlefield

Looking through my piles of scratch build junk I found a perfect base to build on. Again it makes it smaller, but I would rather do a smaller one, then a larger one later-instead of just a middle sized one.

This is a 2'x4' cut of 3/8" MDF. I took a photo of the Imperial Eagle and created a scalable EPS in photoshop. I then printed it onto clear plastic projector paper. I taped it to the wood and used a dremel circular saw blade to cut through the plastic in effect transferring the pattern to the wood.

I drew in the parts I missed (like small curves). And went over it with a pointed router bit. This creates the embossed surface. I then removed all the excess material.

Finally I finished all the concrete sidewalk surfaces with the same methods.

So now I have a good base, just got back from walmart with some foam core, working on the foundation and first story walls. Hopefully I'll have the main structure completed this weekend. Let me know whatever thoughts you have, I'm completely open to the great input from the Dakka crowd (I'm open to the crap input as well

Agree with everyone else, this is really cool!

May I throw in one suggestion? We all know the Ecclesiarchy is totally insane and built on spreading the good word... So perhaps as a little doodad if you put in some speakers and a podium on the balcony? Nothing too elaborate, but something so it's like the priest/preacher could just go off on an anti-heretic tirade and everyone could hear it. I think that would be super cool.

Keep up the good work!

That is probably the coolest way I have ever see flooring done. I cant wait to see how this whole thing turns out. I may have to steal some of these ideas when I finally get around to making a table of my own.

agreed, that is an excellent idea for the flooring, I love it when people build HUGE relatively intact buildings, it adds a bit of flavour, I mean not EVERY building in the galaxy has been completely reduced to rubble.

will monitor this thread to see the outcome

migsula wrote:What a start! I love quality terrain, there's never enough and same goes to blogs, so this is a very welcome combination indeed.

I put as much work into terrain as I would any model. I just got back from picking up some bits from the FLGS and I was chatting with a guy about terrain and how having quality terrain really makes the game better. It's sad when you show to a game and the other guy brings no terrain or just some boxes that are suppose to be buildings.

So I've got the first level structure figured out. Mostly foamcore, some cake pillars. And the first two front towers are mostly cardstock.

I'm not sure what roof texture to use on the towers. I could cut shingle strips (which is the most work). Or I could use this plastic siding that looks like a metal roof. Or I could use any other of a bunch of different texture I've got laying around. Any opinions?

I build this little podium, like you might see the pope out of. I'll put it somewhere right in the front. I'm not sure of any way to do speakers without looking cheesy, any suggestion?

It's not going on the tower, just placed there to take the photo.

Allowing for the work you want o put into this I suggest you make the building out of 'sleeved' parts so the building can be shown in an intact or a ruined state.

Start with the base and a ruined ground floor with low walls and rubble.

On that add the main building in two sections that surrounds the rubble walls. either as a lower floors followeed by upper floors above that, or as a slifghtly overlapping front and rear section. Thus the building could be entirely ruined half in ruins or mostly intact.

Add the towers seperately, for convenience of storage mostly but also sleeve them so the towers cap over ruined stumps etc.

In time you could have an intact and impressive buuilding with a plethora of structure points and systermatically ruin it as it loses them to enemy fire.

any help?

Thanks for the positive feedback, it really helps to keep motivation on a project when people actually like what you're doing.

So here is what I've got so far.

For the tower roofs I went with this roll of kitchen drawer wrap I picked up for 5 bucks. It works as a tile floor or in my case-a copper roof. I trimmed the edges and tossed on some tower-things for good measure.

For the tower windows I cut some holes, put this metal screen mesh on the inside with a plastic back to it (so I could be painted from the front). Trimmed the window out with some plastic-strut pieces and topped them off with some bits out of the baneblade kit.

I wanted some doors for the second level and couldn't find my box of COD building bits. I just took this thick plastic cards, used all sorts of other plastic pieces and some of the metal screen I used in the windows. Even found some old handles from either the original ork battle wagon or leman russ tank kit.

So here is the front second level. I'm okay with it for now. No reason to get bits crazy yet, I still have the rest of the structure to build.

Here is an example of how sometimes just messing around I end up with something I like. Even though I started with a computer model, I ususally only use that to give me a direction. I found the more you plan, the more there is that can go wrong. Here I had some corner trim piece that goes in a house, I picked it up at the hardware store years ago cause I thought it looked cool. I started glueing different things to it and realized it would make a good top to my main tower.

After a few days of adding different things to it while I waited for glue to dry on other things, I ended up with it looking pretty good I think. I'll add some rubbled bits when that stage comes.

I've seen people in different threads ask about where you get bits to work with, or where inspiration comes from. Once you get a serious bit collection going it can get out of hand. Here you see that I could fill tables with just building stuff. Keeping stuff orgainized can be tough, but anything can be turned into the next piece of cool terrain. If you notice in the upper right corner on top of the horizontal drawers, next to the drawer tower, I've got one of those office building water jugs, I can't wait to figure out something for that.

I ended up waiting for a tile saw all morning so I spent it working on the first floor of the Cathedral.

I cut open windows into the main floor walls, inserted some COD pieces and trimmed everything out, added those supports which come out the side.

Then I did the opposite wall which will be partially destroyed.

First floor with the intact wall.

Rear side blown out wall. You can also see the stone wall things for troops to stand on-any thoughts?

I figure I'll block the entries with make shaft barriers. I could do some GS sandbags.

JABBA-blog: My City O' Death @ 2009/04/14 08:24:11

Post by: Lagduf

My only concern is that it might be difficult to move troops inside the first floor once the second floor is applied [Will the second floor/rest of the structure be removable?]

I like the stones in front of the windows, I suppose they'll serve as makeshift firing blocks for troopers to shoot out of the windows.

Otherwise I think it looks excellent. I really like the use of the CoD kits. Using them in conjunction with other materials really does seem like the best way to go about creating imperial terrain. Also allows you to get more bang for your buck with a CoD kit.

I agree completely, and I'm working on how the second story will go, have been chatting some ideas with the guys at the FLGS. I was going to make the entire thing with sections you could remove to show damage, but that seemed like a lot of work for a little benefit. So I want to build a static model, but keeping the issue of troop movement as easy as possible.

Look at this, I don't really mind most of what GW does, I like their product and have few complaints. But just look how they cheap you. each bottle is like 1/3 full new.

So I'm figuring out how to do this second level.

I found something on the front that doesn't line up properly. I'm not sure if I should make it work, or rebuilt part of it again. Also trying to figure out what to do for the windows on this level. Maybe a door.

Don't get me wrong, I don't need feedback. In the end this will be much a much more detailed section in my next modeling guide (see link in my sig for my other work). So I'll document it eventually, and it will be much better. I'm thinking people would rather just look at the guide when it's finished, especially since I go into great details of "how to". I think I'll just space out the updates a bit more.

I am SO impressed with how quickly this is coming together! It looks fantastic too, and it's giving me lots of ideas as to stretching the CoD kits out for custom builds :]

One thing I always wondered with people who construct these sorts of terrain pieces, are they not a total pain to store?

This really does look excellent. The ammount of work and attention to detail that you are putting into this piece really is admirable. I imagine it will be a great centrepiece for your game board and should be lots of fun to play on.

Do you plan on adding any stained glass to the intact windows?

As for the earlier suggestion of speakers, you could try the vox backpacks from the Cadian set.

After some consideration I decided I needed to scrap the 2nd level with towers. I'll just save those for another project. I've re-cut the second level and started adding the windows and structure. I then started the basic structure of the roof. Overall it's just over 2 feet, smaller than I originally planned. I started thinking about those cardboard & plastic buildings that came with the original Epic Space Marine, I think I want to build one of those next.

This is turning out really well man! I am glad to see how you put together the floor with the COD walls. I have been saving the cathedral bits from my COD and planning on doing a similar sort of thing, but I don't have half the skill at using random things that you seem to, so this is really handy for me!

That and the tile for the courtyard is just awesome. Are you planning on putting some detail trim around the doors?

As for the barricades at the doors and he blocks under the first floor windows, how about pews? Make it look like they just picked them up and used them to block the doors and stand on at the windows. Would make sense to have plenty of them in a cathedral.

Wehrkind wrote:That and the tile for the courtyard is just awesome. Are you planning on putting some detail trim around the doors?

The exterior of the doors is trimmed, I try not to was good pieces-so I won't be trimming the interior.
Shellfishguy wrote:As for the barricades at the doors and he blocks under the first floor windows, how about pews?

That was what I first considered. I knew I would need something by the windows since I elevated them (for game purposes at least). But there is also going to be a good deal of rubble and debris in there. Trying to make pews that looks good, and work in the game sounds a bit tough. There is also a battle between making something cool looking, and making it game functional.

I've been thinking about the next piece to work on, I'm thinking that a 40K scale version of one of the box set buildings that came with Epic!

The six story 'T' shaped building. I figure it will be mostly solid with a hole blown in it. Maybe a landing platform on top (like the new one from GW?)

Well I think I've complete all the major work. There are some railings and misc details to put up, I have to finish gluing some of the second floor together and cleaning up the edge. Then all I have to do is add rubble piles, maybe a couple barricades, then base coat. I can't really paint right now, so I think it's on to the next project.

Let me know what you think and if there is anything else I should change/add. Don't forget that you can click on the images to view in gallery-there you can zoom in.

This is pure awesome, wrapped in a crispy shell of awesome, and smothered in awesome sauce.

I don't gush much, only when it's deserved; this is well deserved.

...now, it just needs a paint job that is at least half as good as is the model itself. Heaven forfend a "grey with a dry-brush of grey" paint job.

I decided to get the local store to play test my piece, so I want to bring it to the base coat stage, that means finishing more of the details first. I've started completing the unfinished structural supports of the second and third levels. I'm adding the rubble on the first level. Decided to toss in one of those biker barricades for cover in the front.

Okay, I'll have to get back to tiling the kitchen, so this will probably be the last update for a while.

Not satisfied with the level of rubble, I added another level to the existing. I've been working on a technique of mixing PVA, H2O and some generic acrylic that I can spray onto a model to fix everything and protect the foam for spray paint base coat. I'm still working on it.

I want to add more debris to the top level, but wonder if the rock rubble would look too weird since everything on the top is wood. I'm not sure what to do, any ideas?

I added a bit more bits to the front of the second level, just a little bit of rubble on the balcony.

When I put these pieces on the side to dry I realized that if you needed you could use them as two buildings, three if you wanted just a roof as a piece too.

Moving on to my Epic building, I've started the first couple floors. I've quickly realized that the problem with a piece this large is the amount of windows needed. I've got enough of the same style to make it the first 3 stories. Unfortunately that is only half of what I need. I'm currently trying to figure if I've god another substitute for the windows, or figure out how to deal with only 3 stories.

Having all my stuff out and nothing to do I decided to throw a GW crater on a vinyl tile, a couple COD pieces, some sprue ruins and rocks and BAM!

And here I've got some foam gluing to a base which I will make more ruins from.

And here is the tile entrance I did for the next 2'x2' board after the Epic building.

Post by: jabbakahut

Started playing around with that cheap GW airbrush. I can't tell whether it needs more 'stuff'. Does it seem too plain?

In the meanwhile I've been gluing the first couple floors of the Epic building. Because of the scale of these terrain pieces I've been fixing the walls with construction adhesive, it takes 24 hours at really set-but this is much strong than any PVA or CA glue.

I've decided that I probably used twice as many windows on the first two floors than I needed. The next couple floors with have a larger window spacing, this will give me more windows to work with. I'm currently trying to figure how to create the third and forth floor structures with building damage.

As for more details for the top floor, you could always grab a couple aquila from the Rhino plastic kit and put them up on the wall, maybe have them broken and on the floor. Perhaps a small pulpit or small devotional statue of a saint

The only work I've done for the cathedral is this eagle statue for the roof.

For the epic building I build up the second half with an internal structure and coverings with the major damage. It's been slow going, I'm using two part epoxy for these parts. Once all the structure is established I'll begin with the first level of details.

For scale purposes you may see that acolyte below that red anvil in the bottom of the pic.

Been adding architectural elements like cornices and structural supports.

I'll have to gap fill some of the moldings.

Adding some of the interior detail for the damaged areas.

I think this photo would have been cool if everything was painted.

I think I'll put this building to the side for a while, getting burnt out doing repetitive work. I'm not ready to begin the work on my Mechanium piece. I've ordered some interesting ruin bits and some more COD sprues. I'm not sure what else I should build, does anybody have any ideas?

Started priming the cathedral and decided the second level front was in need of more detail. Added some structual stuff.

I've also wrapped up a couple quick pieces for a possible game tomorrow. I've got some more building pieces coming in the mail, I'll need to make some more city block bases before I begin them.

Got the local gamers to play on the terrain.

Here are four pieces I threw together real quick and easy.
1) Just a MDF sidewalk base, some HD Foam and rocks and sand, toothpicks. Quick and easy.

Found a couple spots that need some more glue and sand.
2) Just a GW crater on a vinyl floor tile on an MDF board with some COD pieces.

3) Another MDF sidewalk board, some GW barricades and building corners from the box set.

4) Floor tile, GW barricades & COD pieces.

The Cathedral worked out really well, there are a few spots where I'll add a few more details. The magnetic sectioning of the levels worked really well.
Roof - Floors 4,5 & 6.

Second level - Floors 2 & 3.
There will be a banner hanging from the hooks on the right.

First level details.

The entire thing.

As always, be sure to click on the photo's to zoom in for detail, can you find the skeleton in the rubble?

I've reached a lull in my big construction (house remodel), so I've had some time to work on the small stuff.

Continuing my work on various pieces in my city of death; I've been working on one of the larger building blocks.

This is two kits that I planned on a 2x2 board. Now that the buildings are coming together I'm not sure if I like how close they are.

I'm also thinking it would work better as two 1x1 pieces. I can still rip the basses of the board and start them anew.

Any ideas would be appreciated. There is no need for me to split them up for the sole purpose of having more pieces, as it stands now I will have enough city blocks to cover an Apocalypse board which is 8x8. I'm merely concerned for aesthetics and playability.

Keep them as one piece, or split them up?

I think it is that both buildings destroyed on opposite sides it looks weird. You need more destruction between them to open it up. Like a shell on each building and one smack in between them at the corners. That will make it a lot better.

OOI, are you doing anything with the inside of the Future Zone buildings? I'm thinking of cutting & gluing card stock in there to make the building feel "thick".

I thought I would have to originally, but once you get the structure set up-it's more sturdy than one would expect. I've picked up some automotive bondo, I haven't worked with it before. It seems like you have to mix it all at once. I figure once I get all the basic building structures set up, I'll mix the bondo and see if it works for a filler inside the walls. I tried some drywall mud, but that was just way to brittle and added little to no structural support. I'll also be adding I-beams and variously other details to the underside of the floors. Let me know if you have any better luck filling in the walls.

JABBA-blog: My City O' Death @ 2009/08/15 08:37:11

Post by: FoxPhoenix135

Are they sturdy enough to fill with gap filler, like Great Stuff? You know, that expanding foam stuff. I used to fill hollow rifle-stocks with that to make them more durable without adding a ton of weight, but if the buildings you are talking about are delicate at all it probably would burst them open like over-fed goldfish.

JABBA-blog: My City O' Death @ 2009/08/15 17:11:14

Post by: jabbakahut

Problem with a foam filler is that these are like jello molds that are only 1/8" deep. And the foam would be exposed opn the inside of the building. So you would have to shave off most-just to get it flat, then coat it again with something else.

It's been a while since I've updated, but I've been working on projects whenever I've had time between construction of my basement remodel. I hope to be giving some updates over the week.

For the issue with the multiple pieces crowded on the 2x2 board, I ripped them off and replaced them with one of the big pieces I will be working on. I then remounted the bases on the smaller 1x1 boards.

I added some more detail stuff to the roof of the Epic building I've been working on.

I got distracted with my Mechanium board and started building the structure on it.

Photo's aren't that great, but I'm cleaning up and will take some better shots of the current progress of these multiple pieces.

Ha, no. It is a sprocket from my old BMX bike.
ghosty wrote:where are these model kits from by the by?

FRP games, you can see some of the reviews I did here.

Here are some better photo updates.

Mechanium building.

There are tons of little bits I need to add to bring it up to snuff. Currently I'm still working on the main structures. I'll be adding a magnetized roof. I'm not sure what exactly to do with the two spaces in the front of the building. I don't really like that power substation thing, I think I'll put that on it's own board. I like the exploded tank, and I'm thinking about adding some smoke stacks on the other side maybe?

After planetstrike came out-I had to get that shrine of the bird thing. I pared it with some of the CoD pieces on a 1x2 board. It's pretty much done, just need to add rubble. I did add a front roof structure on the other building.

I'm amazed how well the imperial barricade ruins blend right into the Cod Pieces.

It's a large rubble pile from a building. Alone it doesn't look all that, but I'll be adding bits all over it to really punch it up.

Yeah, I've been torn if I want to do a road system, or just lay out the "city blocks" on a general asphalt style game board. I am planning a water channel system with 12" sections which can be routed any way.

Since I can't ever work on one piece at a time-I've been trying to knock out some of my other started buildings. First is a garage type building that I decided to put the roof on (non-magnetized), I knocked out the middle of the roof to allow for greater interior access. Then I added some structural and aesthetic supports.

I took most of my remaining CoD pieces and put them on one of my last 1x1 boards. I'm never too happy when I just use the pieces as intended. Feels like I could always have done much more with them.

I then went to work on the big "moutain" piece. There really isn't that much space to put minis on it. I figured I would add rubble and dirt, but then I had some more left over floor sections to the CoD pieces and decided to make better places to put Space Marines. I then started adding stuff for defencive cover. I know this thing will require 3-4 coats of sand and rubble to really look right, but at least I've got it started.

I then finally put the regular residential looking buildings on their new basses (they were from the 2x2 board that I separated into regular 1x1 boards).

I didn't intend on adding any flair yet, but sometimes I just can't stop once started. The structure for the big building was surprisingly stable. I started adding some of the miscelaneous CoD pieces and just kept going. Kudos to anyone who can figure what I used for the lower window ledges.

I've been getting a bunch of new idea watching some other blogs. I've relied rather heavily on using parts and kits. I want to move into a more comprehensive scratch building. Watching someone like Blackadder building complete & near identical models to Forge World resin out of nothing but styrene... Too cool. Excellent stuff! The extra work on the cathedral is amazing! Don't worry about using bitz in combination with scratching. As amazing as blackadder's stuff is, it also takes him forever to finish anything. Remember, it all gets painted in the end, and then you can't tell what it is made of.

Somehow I missed it, but what are you using for these excellent window bitz?

I see where you said you didn't have enough of them, but I didn't see what they were.

Thanks, it's funny that I just left a comment on your blog that you can get those windows at train stores! In particular these windows were from a train factory kit (along with the sky lights). I think those may actually be an HO scale, and they represented windows that were like 10 feet tall or something (big warehouse windows). But they made for intricate large Gothic windows in the 40K world. They are like 1.5 x 3 inch. Here are some shots with GW COD bits to estimate the size.
