"His were the kind of words that are both terrible to hear and impossible to forget; I admired him greatly."
-Dilk Jirp on Kiergar
I am running a campaign this summer that ties together a Dark Heresy story we have been running for over a year with 40K, BFG and Apocalypse. The campaign involves a galaxy-wide Chaos plot to wage a crusade that will assault Mars itself. After ten millennium, the traitor marines would see their war machines renewed. The final battle will occur on a new 8x12' table representing a secret Adeptus Mechanicus base on Mars' polar cap. While the battle is preordained by Eldar seers, the nature of this struggle, whether a desperate last stand for the forces of the Imperium, or a clever trap set for the haughty forces of Chaos, lies in the hands of the players.
I have set myself about painting 10,000 points of Chaos by the apocalyptic finale in October. Aggressive, but it's good to aim high. The Chaos forces include three distinct armies, Mort's Reapers, a contingent of Berserkers led by Kharn (Maelstrom of Gore), and the masterminds of it all, the Iron Hydras.
Mort's Reapers
The grizzled Commissar had insisted on entering the reeking bunker first. He stood in the relative darkness with his back to the door, bust silhouetted by the firing silt in the far wall.
"Mort's Reapers" he confirmed flatly, harsh voice muffled by the cloth pressed over his mouth and nose.
"Mort?" piped up young Phil. "How bad can it be?" He sounded hopeful as ever. For a few moments the buzz of the carrion flies was the only sound.
"I guess you better have a look," the Commissar growled, turning back toward the men.
"Don't make 'im," the sergeant whispered plaintively.
"How bad can it be?" Phil repeated as he stepped forward, ignoring the officer. The Commissar moved out of the beam of light draped across the floor. Phil stopped. The other men turned away as the retching began.
"Grab 'im, Tiny," said the sergeant.
"Don't worry kid," said the Commissar as he stalked out of the bunker. "We'll all look like that soon enough."
The Daemon Prince Mortis leads the Reapers. First iteration (that will be a scythe):
And working on some pitting and corrosion of the armor after centuries:
I have done some more since and will add some pics when I can.
Mortis' friend, the Great Unclean One is also coming along:
And some WIP troopers:
The Maelstrom of Gore and other World Eater Elements
Kharn, MKII:
A bloodthirster WIP painted by my wife:
The bersekers are built and two rhinos with FW goodies are nearly complete. I just need to paint it all.
Iron Hydras
The Iron Hydras are a Chaos Legion formed millennia ago by the joinder of a an Alpha Legion warband led by the Daemon Prince Kiergar the Snake and an Iron Warrior warband led by Warsmith Dierar Wallbreaker. How these warlords separated from their original legions and the basis for their cooperation is not known by Imperial Scholars, but the two seem to work in perfect unison and with complementary styles, one a force of charisma and great schemer, the other a consummate tactician with a passion for armor. The Legion's symbol, a two headed hydra, references it's dual leadership and Alpha Legion roots.
This army includes a Hellblade, Warhound Titan, and other bits of armor on top if Daemons and CSMs.

This is the greatest idea. The follow up campaign must have Necrons(taking advantage of Mars' weakened state.).

Thanks for all the comments! Glad to hear others enjoying Dark Heresy too. We have 7 or so players in that game in 4-5 people for the 40K (a few overlap), so we should be able to do quite a bit with this. Not finding time for the BFG - another time.
Here are some Khornate Rhinos for the "Maelstrom of Gore" Datasheet:

Thanks gents! It had stalled for a while, but I am back in the swing now. If I work hard between now and Columbus day WE (the big event) I will be able to get a lot, if not everything done. The plan is to get it looking good for Apoc pics, but go back and do the fine detail later if I have time. I want everything in the finale game to be WYSIWYG and painted.

Sometimes it's a little scary big.
Some more models built. First is Ahriman. Minor conversion on the arm and I figured some kind of circle on his base would be nice sorcerer symbolism.
The next one is Kiergar the Snake - one of the two leaders of the Iron Hydras (the one with the Alpha Legion roots). Love the Daemon Prince model, so did not do too much with it other than adding the tongue to provide a name reference.

Campaign Intro
Over her shoulder, Inquisitor Kailen watched the Eagle Ascendant grow smaller from the VIP seating in the StormCrow patten interceptor. She wondered if she would see her void-borne home again and said a prayer for Commander Obel and Captain Denet. Even the Lord Inquistor's Black Arc, which dwarfed the Eagle Ascendant, was shrinking fast.
The grey-suited marines around her were taciturn as ever, but she could feel their unease. Even the Legion of Shades could not know fear, they knew concern and these Astartes were taking a terrible risk. It could only be a matter of time before Lord Inquisitor Quol would discover that they had Kailen with them. The consequences of that were certain - they would be declared heretics; their fortress Monastery would likely be attacked and with no reserve to defend it, the prospects were grim.
Pushing aside worry, Kailen found an upswell of faith and renewed her resolve. If it was not too late, they would pick up team Sigma and sound a warning to those who would listen. These were fateful times indeed.
Time for some more of Mort's Reapers. First we have his Chosen with 4 Meltas (gotta have some way to deal with tanks!). Nice to use some classic models with a few updating conversions - the Chosen should be the most warped and twisted so some of the wacky older models fit right in.
Next up are three units of 7 Lesser Daemons - I figured giant rats were very appropriate. Some of them are in pretty motley base-coating because they were dredged up from an old project. At least 3 generations of giant rats there, I think.
Finally, we have some PIP shots of the standard Plague Marines. They'll get a lot more detail and variation eventually, but they are coming along.

Good point PP, it's always fun to mix up and not do the archetype.
Made good progress this WE. Working on the traitor Baneblade now. Tonight's update are two huge units of flamers. Instead of the arms, I have added so GS flames coming out of their sides. I will probably end up splitting these up and they are super over-kill at 9.
And here's an old school obliterator (built 3 new ones over the WE).
Much more to come!

Very cool, however I am not a fan of the icon. It screams alpha legion but doesn't have anything to make one think that they are half iron warriors, I would just think that they were an alpha legion warband.

Post by: darkkt
So awesome. The rats are a great idea - nice use of old models.
The DP - I know the tongue is to indicate that its alpha legion (snakey), but when its just 'jutting' out in a straight line, it looks a little comical/cartoony. I think the tongue should 'loll' out of its mouth, like a dogs.
I will be very interested in seeing how you paint this DP - Ive just finished painting my most recent alpha legion chosen melta model (Im a painfully slow painter) - Im going to try and post some pics tonight.
One more thing - really like the work on the bases - I try to do this myself, gluing spare bits of bitz on the bases for some extra goodness. Love it.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks. The idea was it's a bit blockish/inorganic looking to show the "Iron" side. Maybe I could have made it segmented? It will be pretty clear when you see the amount of armor in the force, though.

Thanks for the suggestion on the tongue. I was thinking of it being out like a snake when it is "smelling." The thing that bothers me is the thickness. Had I made it loll I could have sculpted it with GS and made it thinner because it would be supported.
Checked out your gallery, but it looked like the painted images are not up yet. The scales looked good.

Yes - Mortis is based on him.
Much newer defilers. What a major pain these things are to assemble. Hate the original tiny heads and decided to try the terminator heads instead. Still deciding if I am satisfied. Think so.
I am going to use the super cool dudes as Heralds of Nurgle for the Daemon portion of my army. I think the models fit the role pretty well.

I'd be interested in doing something for a Khorne/WE based DP

Post by: scarab
He has quite a bit of scroll work and so on to dremel off. For me, the rough surface left behind was a desired effect. For some looks it would need repair, which could be a pain. Need to find a head too - defiler or something? He's about the same size and the standard DP model, so it works pretty well.

Just a quick suggestion here about abaddon.
Maybe the plastic chaos termie lord model, but using the head and arms (hands) from the origional model?
this should make him stand a fair bit taller and look a hell of a lot more daunting.
As for what you have done so far, it looks fething amazing, cant pick fault with anything except you have too much money to burn
1361
Post by: scarab
Yeah, I bet I could make a termie head work and a whole new approach based on the termie lord would be cool as well. Having read the first three Horus Heresy books I think I'll just keep him in his (over the) top-knotted splendor for this go-round.
Update for today is a unit of Thousand Sons. The Sons are pretty bland fare, but I like how the Aspiring Sorcerer came out! I have been wanting to make a conversion based on this model for a long time.
306
Post by: Boss Salvage
10 Sons + sorcerer! That's a meaty squad of AP3 love! The champ is a way groovy conversion, especially set off by all those 1k Son clones
I'll second that you could do a much better Abby by combining the plastic lord kit with the metal head + weapons - and I once posted a pretty EPIC post of other modelers' custom Ababdbdbadons somewhere on here. It sounds like you're more interested in getting a very identifiable Abby on the table, and yea, the old shorty model works
Dig the dready, second chaos dread in 24 hours I've seen with asymmetrical ccw (and one with a heavy flamer welded to it), nice look. You didn't build up his waist, did you? Looks less hideously stunted than usual.

Tonight I have a rather crummy pic of Dierer Wallbreaker, the other co-leader of the Iron Hydras with Kiergar the Snake. Also up are a unit of old school raptors. Not my favorite models, but cool in their way and you don't want to leave anything our when you are going for 11,000+ points. I was happy with how the came out relative to the bases and they are pretty well centered and not too too tippy.

Looking for some suggestions this time around - what to do with my Thousand Sons/Ahriman? I'll have the Iron Hydras painted in the worn green tone shown on the Land Raider at the beginning of this thread. The followers of the blood god will be in deep red with similar wear. The Nurgle guys are all rusty. I tend to like brighter looks for Tzeentch stuff, but I want it to fit in and I already have these:
So I am looking to do something different. Grittier, darker, but still fitting. Deeper blue and more toward brass than gold, maybe? Any suggestions appreciated.

On another note: my wallet is in great peril: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/chaosreaver.htm
I was looking at the non-Chaos version yesterday and discussing with my wife that I could easily stave off buying one only because a chaos version was not available. This one is not as aged and weather beaten as the Warhound, which is disappointing, but it's still pretty cool. Hopefully some other arms will be available. CC weapons at this scale are of limited value, I think.
I might have to get one for this army, but first I have a few things to paint.

Thanks for the suggestion: I am not familiar with them so I went and had a look for pics. Seems like they have sort of Egyptian themed technology. Cool. Time for an update - only a month left to go! The first of my models are almost done.
The titan is almost ready for paint (need to fix the bubble in his hip first).
What's left to do, minus a few on my painting table and the titan. A bit over 11K points.
One table section receiving aluminum edging:
And another based and textured. Needs snow now.
I am off to airbrush some base silver for the armored portions of my army. This will then have hairspray applied and then the primary color - some of which will be brushed off to make chips like the Land Raider at the top of this thread.

Unholy cow, you and your wife sure know how to put out some fantastic looking models.
I only wish I were a small portion as good at it as you guys are
Love the Mortis model's armour. Not really seen that pitted look on such a scale before.

Appreciate the comments.
I have been very busy painting of late, but it's time to catch up with a few pics!
First up we have pics of the painted 'thirster. This one has waited a very long time to be fully painted and based, but he's finally done. Perfect!
And some flamers. Figured I'd go for a bold, in-theme scheme for them as my marines and armor are more muted and natural. They're the raw stuff of Chaos, so fun to get fanciful.

Holy crap scarab, that is the best molten lava effect I have seen in a long while. You pulled it off brilliantly!
Where is your thirster's head from? You must have mentioned it before but I missed it.

I like that the brightest part of the flamers is towards their 'core' or 'center of consciousness' if you will. How everything radiates from there getting colder.

Hey dude, great work, very impressive, I especially like the flamer concept and paint scheme, bold is gold, especially in this case, my only question with them being: Are they supposed to be hot and melting the snow around them, or are they like all chaos-y flames and dont effect the snow unless they want to type idea?
As well, for the thousand suns, I would look up the classic tomb king models for some inspiration, everyone always makes them extremely bright, but I believe they should be almost like they are in perpetual sandstorm, very worn, I mean, they are just shells roamin' around and were burnt out from the inside? just a thought...

Ditto graypaint on how good the 'Thirster's head is. That's a WHFB boar, right? Looks much better than the original. With that head in place, I can finally appreciate the rest of the fig (well, except the giant hands). Also, those flamers look ace.
Thanks for being an inspiration to those of us who have Apocalypse-scale "to do" piles!

That mob of flamers is really something Scarab, all together on snow bases and all. And in game, damn that's a LOT of no armor template love I'm really a fan of that 'thirster too, with the more aggressive pose, backswept wings and that GREAT boar head. I'll say it now, if I ever get around to making a 'proper' 'thirster (rocking a balrog convert and an uber-prince right now) I'll be nicking that headswap - Salvage

As Savnock noted - WHFB boar. And yeah, the head's a little OTT, but that okay now and then.

My wife said the same. I went with the "not really hot, just Chaos" approach. If I had infinite time, I'd definitely prefer to go with the melt look. Good ideas on the Thousand Sons - thanks!
Some WIPs from the Nurgle side (Mort's Reapers) today. The green will all be a lot more natural and complex ( GuO tone, but more varied) when done.
And the plague marine contingent with the bases done. Still lots of detail ahead:

Gutteridge, I think Miss Dee's comment is just a quick way of saying she's followed the latest update and enjoyed it. Good question on the rusting: the answer is "it depends." I did do the largest amount of rusting on the Nurgle side with the airbrush. Honestly, it over-rusted them a bit compared to what I had planned. I expect to do the remaining rusting by brush. Here's the "secret": http://www.micromark.com/RUSTALL-SYSTEM,7532.html Enjoy!

LOL! No worries. It'll have some details, but maybe not in time for the big game. Still a lot of the 12K points to paint!

Thanks Jack.
Time for another update. Here's what's on my airbrush table at the moment. Note the Titan has some paint now!
Here's all three sections of the table - two done and one built. It'll be arranged as two 8x4s with a 5.5x4 between then in an H-shape to facilitate reaching models to move them.
And finally, the Maelstrom of Gore contingent of the army. Sorry for the poor pic, but I think you can see the chipping effect under the base of red. Much more to come on these.
Working on some nurglings at the moment.

The Nurgle guys are all rusty. I tend to like brighter looks for Tzeentch stuff, but I want it to fit in...
Hey Scarab, just did a quick scroll through your thread and I must say you have some very impressive work! As to the Tzeentch marines, I have two suggestions (sorry if I'm late).
1: Stark, hard highlights probably of a blue-ish tincture. I see this a lot of WHFB chaos knights and it really seems to carry that 'otherworldly' armor look. Example:
2: Sort of along the same lines as 1, paint your marines up in a scheme close to the rest of the army but differentiate them by using blue glow effects on some or all of the cracks/gaps/spaces of their power armor. I thought this up whilst typing my first idea so unfortunately I don't have a pictorial example but I think this might be ideal for creating marines that flow with the overall force whilst still being distinctly 'Tzeentch'.
Hope it helps and in any case I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Sorry for the lack of updates - I was sprinting to get it all done! While the models mostly need more detail, etc., the basics were all there to look great on a 24,000 total-point game. The thread will live on as I continue to work on individual models, but let me first share where I got to in the adventure with the Apocalyptic battle rep over the next few days. The game took 21 hours to play over two days, so I figure the rep is better to do in pieces. Here goes:
Inquisitor Kailen had a hunch, and as her hunches had proven the salvation of the Imperium in the past, the Ultramarines under Romulus' urging, Cannoness Margarite and her annexed Guard, and portions of Inquisitor Mack's personal army traveled to Mars to meet the forces of Chaos. Other Imperial forces protected other high value targets throughout Segmentum Solar and the Sol system in particular, but Kailen was sure that the secret STC library on Mars' polar cap was the true target of the Ruinous Powers.
They found the base in good condition to defend with excellent infrastructure between the entrances to the underground complex and the only suitable landing area in the area (far end).
Surveying the battlefield, Kailen and her allies knew there would be six main objectives that would need to be considered to keep Chaos from penetrating the library. The first two were the physical entrances (near end) consisting of an armored pyramid and a simple escape hatch built into a cut-off Martian outcropping. These objectives were well guarded by two bastions and barricades. Also of strategic importance were en electrical facility and test station (mid field), which were surrounded by razorwire, but, if lost, could reveal secrets about the base and it's defenses, and finally the control tower and fueling station in the landing area (far end), which would allow the Chaos forces to quickly escalate their assault.

You bet, G'n'W! And now the first half of the forces of Chaos make their entry:

Turn 4A - With the battle fully joined, the Warhound turns his attention to Grey Knights and Ultramarines around the control tower. The unengaged elements of the Chaos forces push forward in a Strategic Redeployment to close the gap with the Imperial artillery. Formations can be surprisingly hard to kill. And 3 multi-melta speeders behind a Driver Stunner Baneblade is bad news!
Turn 5A - Still flush with his destruction of Ultramarine terminators, Abaddon waded from his Landraider into combat with six Grey Knight terminators, killing three easily, but suffering a thunderhammer blow that slowed him briefly. The last Grey Knight at the control tower ended his duty to the Emperor under the foot of the Warhound. (Score: Chaos 22 + 3*5 = 37 - Imperials 31)
Turn 5B - The Grand Master of the Grey Knights fearlessly charges into combat with the Great Unclean One behind the control tower, relieving a sole Ultramarine Champion who had survived four turns of combat with the immense pustulant Daemon. And now the final turn!
Turn 6A - Sensing a possible victory in the air, the minions of Chaos charge forward into the teeth of the Imperial tanks. The Warhound covers their advance by destroying the famed Imperial Tanker Task and his command Vanquisher. The Marines and Daemons of the Plague God dig in to the objectives they hold, anticipating a righteous final push from the forces of the Imperium. (Score: Chaos 37 + 3*6 = 55 - Imperials 41)
Turn 6B - The Imperial Ogryns rush forward to try to push the Plague Marines out of the electrical facility and secure a famous victory. They are supported by the combined firepower of as many Imperials as could bring their guns to bear. Unfortunately, the Sons of Nurgle proved too resilient and the Ogryns could not secure the objective. With only two victory points separating the forces of Good and Evil, the battle was declared a draw. (Score: Chaos 55 - Imperials 41 + 2*6 = 53)

It's an Inquisitor scale space marine as a base. 58mm models line up well size-wise with typical Daemon Princes and it's a GW model.
