So I have about 300+ infantry , crap load of tanks , heavy weapons , and beyond and have been playing guard for about 5 years now and can do 3 different armies with what I have .... but not one list is painted =( . This is going to change as iam super excited about the new book I love the feel of it and it is going to be a blast , although I will miss deep striking 8 sentinals and 165 infantry onto the table . ( but I got valks so its all good )
This blog is going to keep me going and get a nice old fashion cadian list out there ( with some tweeks to the color scheme ) I always wanted to do a take on the cadian colors so here it goes .
First of I went with a mechinized squad to get things going squad is in wip stage
chimera
plasma gun specialist to burn down some termies
Storm tropper came by to check on uniform code
The start of the missle launcher team
thats it for now more too come soon .

Thanks , after the army gets done iam going to take my time and go in and weather it all .

Nice start here, good conversion with the plasma gunner too. It might be a bit better to keep a continuous height along the top though, maybe use a little plastic card spacer to fil the gap?
Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
Dante

Post by: slann
That or maybe greenstuff it , On the next plasma gunner il give it a shot se how it goes ..
My goal today is to finish off that rocket team and that guardsmen with the face already done , than treat myself with working on that commissar . Maybe even get ahead and basecoat the rest of the unit .

Its been a bit since the last update but now I can get back at it , after taking a fresh look at what I had painted I decided I wanted the troops to pop a bit more but still have a weathered muted look , after messing around with some blending I came up with this for the greens .
I am pretty happy with this , as for the jacket I think iam going to change the tan color only cause it feels like "oh the same old scheme for the cadians " I might go with a brown or maybe some sort of urban blue .

I love it so far, only have one "comment". Eventhough your sgt. model's eyes are fantastic he looks "windeyed" (both pupills not looking in the same direction)... other than that, amazing stuff!

Maybe you could go for a darker green for the coat. They look good, but I agree that the sarges eyes look a bit strange.Yet I think it gives him a bit of character.

Post by: slann
The sarg. is the guy with the mohawk and bolter , but the one without the helmet his eyes dont look bad when I hold the fig I went back and checked I think its the pic that has it look a little off . I do agree he looks a lil cross eyed though in that picture lol .

I have to say I love the color scheme, but I call you a madman for painting an entire Guard army like that.

Post by: slann
so iam doing the green on 2 units than iam going to start the other colors tommorrow .
but I did get to work on someother stuff to mix it up a bit and keep it interesting .
some might remember this from the converting thread I did this a while back in my old paint scheme il have to repaint it .
I dug up the rest of the dogs and got them ready to have riders placed on them .
I also worked on my punisher conversion still very wip
Also dug up some guys i want to turn into covert vets

well I was able to get some stuff done today well I laid out the rest of the colors Iam going to use and painted up a sarg.
This guy has a bit of a backround and I like the fig alot and just wanted to get painting si I chose him to get the first full paint job . Well he needs to be based and maybe a minor highlight or two but its late and I wanted to get some pics up .
I do love this guys bolter I like the folding stock and the added forgrip gives makes it look like its can be fitted for a guardsmen .
Hey you up there !
Iam going to give the lasguns the same treatment as that bolter I like how it further breaks up the green .

I liked how I painted it but it doesnt really match my new scheme I guess il save it for last .

Hellhound crews aren't known for sanely following other people's rules. As long as they're willing to race across a battlefield in a steel coffin hauling 400 gallons of Promethium, I say let them style their Hellhound any way they want.
Regarding photos: If you are using your Zoom, stop doing that. Take the pics without zooming in. Use the Macro function. Use light sources other than the camera flash.
Take a look at FoxPhoenix's thread. He pays attention to even more details - exposure setting, light adjustment - than I do. I like to snap my photos in two minutes or less.

Thanks for the photo tips , as for the hellhound maybe I will keep as is ( do some touch ups bring it up to par ) its been doing so well .

I know , I know Slann WTF with the updates lets get this on the ball already , I know ..... I been busy now I can get back into this bad boy and get some work done !
I havnt totaly stopped work on my beloved guard I picked up 2 valks which I freggin love model and game wise , and got some new comcepts I want to add to this army . Its not much but here are some pics to get this going agian ..
I had an idea I wanted to give my guard kinda a more gritty cadia look so I went towards and army of two look , a game I got into with my 2 sons and I love the look of the ballistic masks they wore . so I thought thats it , the little something I was looking for to make this my own gritty cadia force .
masks in WIP form , as you can see I have alot to do
and a closer look ...
And some vendetta las cannon turrets I made
Thats it for now hope you all like it , feels good to be back at it agian !

Wow, a plug from a DCM! I feel flattered.
Seriously though, slann, I think your style of painting is so totally awesome and beyond anything I put out... I just wanted you to know that. It stops being art imitating life and becomes art being simply art! Very visually pleasing, all those short strokes. Like a Monet painting (miniature impressionism FTW!).
That Mohawk Sarge is coming very nicely. Where did you find that bolter? It really does look awesome.
The Hellhound is totally rocking too, BTW.
Army of Two is a pretty sweet game, I thought about making some marine conversions of them but thought against it. Guard conversions would be awesome, though, especially for stormtroopers or veterans.
967
Post by: slann
Thanks for the kind words I picked up this style a fews years back and started to really dig it , Its kinda like my signiture now on my minis . I have been looking to also get into painting in a muted monchrome realism look but thats down the road with more practice .
For the storm troopers Iam just going to rock the karsakins I love them as is . With the vets though Il give them the army of two bulky shoulder and leg pads and some gun shields , I have another head swap for them though .
The bolter is from the space marine bike box I dont know if they still have them but they used to come with a sprue of like 3 of them .
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
Ah. Sadly they do not anymore then, because I just bought a ton of bikes last month (15 and an attack bike) and there was not such a sweet bolter on the sprue.

Post by: slann
So here is the first vet painted and ready to rock !
This is Ressco " Upgrade " Flintlock , Like all young cadian' s he was breaking down , cleaning , and putting his las gun together before he fully knew how to read . He was in the conscript platoon a fresh faced 16 year old boy quickyly being noticed by his field officers as a crack shot , he was put into the regular forces with the " crazy " 888 air drop division . He served with the 888th through the black campaign a campaign that was filed as top secret and little is known of the missions involved , not even the men involved speak about it and if the subject is touched its met with stone cold silence .
Upon returning from his missions in the Black campaign Ressco went on to work for the emperor on high priority missions this is where he was inducted into the Iron vet squadron and picked up the nickname " Upgrade " as you can see from the pics Ressco has a love for upgrading his gear , when his unit comes home for a short leave he runs to the nearest rogue trader to service his gear rather than ummm service himself like the others do . With his love for his upgraded gear and his skills with his las gun he acts as the units sharp shooter , as well as the units " hacker " . His gear consists of all sorts of scanners , stabilizers , ammo types , even a top of the line mini computer which he is often fiddling with on the units down time in the field .
Upgrade is one of the two only members of the iron vets to pick up an emperors seal , his is for marksmanship . The seal of marksmanship was given to him for killing The ork commander of Grazznlark a Stompa class titan from a hovering Valkyrie 275 yards out , which caused the Stompa's crew to become too unorganized to operate the huge titan , it was easy for the imperial navy to sweep in and finish it off .
Hope you enjoyed the first bio to the iron vet squad , I am new to writing fluff for my units on the forums hope you all enjoy it .
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
That is killer, slann. So you say he is the sharpshooter, so he is a sniper then? Good work. The fluff is a nice touch, giving reason to the way a model is equipped.

Post by: slann
Hahahaha , well didnt do 3 units yet but painted up another of the original unit .
This is Jason " Brick " Mafaroun He is one of the youngest to be inducted into the Iron veteran squad , but Probably one of the toughest . 3 time Cadian boxing champion by the time he was 22 years old Brick was noticed by his officer staff from the moment he picked up a las gun in defense of the Gates his brutal combat style and love of battle was inspiring amongst the troops and was quickly given a squad to command on his own , but his squad was cut off from the main lines and was lost to combat a size- able chaos force on there own . hence to say 6 days later with one eye missing limping but still standing walked into his company's command tent , walked up to the commanding officer knocking his lights out with one left hook to the jaw , than passing out himself .
Brick woke up in the infirmary with a commissar standing by the foot of his bed , He was handed orders for his new duty in the Iron veterans . On his way out the commissar said over his shoulder " shame you had to lose eye on the account of an incompetent flighty pampered officer ." shot Brick a sly smile and left the room .

And a group shot of the 4 painted so far

Post by: slann
OK OK , finally an update sorry kept getting sidetracked like the other night when I was suppose to update after the game , someon had the awesome idea to see district 9 and Iam glade I went to see it cause it was awesome . antway to the update .

Jake " Fyce " Ronen was brought up pretty much in the rich part of town coming from a very wealthy family which helped him attend the best schools and obtain the best education money can buy , but money in Cadia cant buy one thing , a pass from serving in the military well it can but his father being a war hero would never even think of that as an option and truth be told Fyce was looking forward to his service . Money was able to buy him a spot in the vetted storm trooper platoon though .
Fyce had a wit for making anything that can go boom he also had a wit for finding and setting up traps with his explosive devices , Fyce served with the 223rd storm trooper platoon for 7 years and was given an emperors seal for locating and deactivating a large explosive device under Cadia General hospital and saving the lives within and also being able to trace where the explosive was made , leading to the take down of the trader scum that built and set the device . Fyce was approached by a commissar on the day of his award ceremony and has been with the Iron vets ever since . On his first mission out the squad came across a dog impaled on a barbed wire fence Fyce had a weekness for the site of him and refused to leave him there , after a few words and a fist fight with the sgt. later it was decided that the dog would be bandaged up and hidden for extraction on the way back from the mission at hand , from then on Sec had become a member of the iron vet squad as well . Sec being short for the Cadian word Amasec Which is a strong alcoholic beverage distilled from wine which the mangy mutt seams to love . Sec has proved himself time and time agian by helping Fyce search out booby traps at extremely fast rate .
Fyce was givin his name by Chef just like everyone else in the iron vets Fyce came from the word fyceline the main chemical in explosives , Fyce also made a custome upgrade to his shotgun being able to launch small rocket like grenades from the barrel of his shotgun ( like the grenade used to launch from m1's in WW2 ) .
A sneak peak at the second iron vet squad , with awesome street sweeper automatic shotgun !

Jeebus Fethballs Slann! these guys never cease to impress me! It was certainly worth the wait. One question: How do you get your elbow/knee/wrist pads coming out so clean and sharp? I tried to add some to my recce team but they kept getting mucked up while I was manipulating the GS. Could you add a little mini tutorial?

Again, nice work. These are very, very nice!
The photo quality isn't amazing though, what sort of camera are you using? Does it have a macro zoom?
Plus you could really benefit from some simple post-processing such as auto-contrasing and auto-colouring. Does this example look more like it does in real life?
Also, I have stolen your idea for necron heads. Gonna add some gasmasak filters and shove them on Elysian bodies for my valkyrie drop-troopers

I agree, the necron heads really do capture the "Army of Two" look.

hey is the vanquisher worth the use in a under 1500 point army? seeming its only 1 shot slug in the new rules, i love the paint scheme you give these guys keep it up man
967
Post by: slann
With pask I love ths tank it takes out at last 2 big tanks a game , its a melta gun from 72 inches away with a las cannon back up , and in kill points it usually takes out a few tanks and lives unlike a melta aquad . I feel Pask is the key to making it work though .
in a 1500 point game I would take one vanquisher with pask and 2 russes , I probably would cut a valk before I cut my tanks .

Sar " Gravy " O' lancen grew up in his dads garage wrench in hand since the age of 7 , he spent all his time in that garage til the time he left for service even Wedding his dads partners daughter .
Gravy was fit right in with the 129 th armored company , he was able to get just about any walker , truck , tank , or speeder put in front of him back in service sometimes within minutes even sometimes in the field ... well actually most of the time in the field .
Gravy ' s company was hit hard by traitor scum when he was trying to get the treads on the companys vanquisher going when his unit was over run . Gravy along with his commander and a handful of tank crew managed too hull up around there tank and fend off the last of the traitors in a grueling hand to hand combat where Gravy took down more than a few with his plasma cutter . The unit received gold stars for there bravery and the return of there prized vanqusher " Big Bow " .
You guessed it he was visited by a certain commissar and was offered a spot in the Iron Vets , a job he wanted to turn down and just finish his tour and get back to his pops shop and to his Wife . But was hit with an offer he couldn't refuse , him and his Family was given a waiver of there taxes . with this extra money His pop can retire out on the solar reefs . Now he serves as his units main melta gunner and field mechanic .

Post by: FoxPhoenix135
Hmm.... I've been trying to determine what your gunshields need to spice them up a bit.... I would say little imperial eagles like the HW gunshields have, or skulls, but I do not know where you would procure such bits.
The paintjob on "Gravy" is awesome, btw. The vertical stripe motif is very eye-catching, and a good way to differentiate special weapon troopers, it looks like.
967
Post by: slann
Plasma gunners might get a yellow stripe , as for the gun shields I might add decals to them , when I get to the decal phase of the army . Decals are so time consuming to make them blend in rite , I like to do it at the ends after the army is painted . Automatically Appended Next Post: oh and how is the wifey did the bun in the oven pop out yet .

Hey guys took a small break from my commissions to refresh my mind and painted a model to go along with the vets .
Here is my sly marbo to go along with the vets .
Little is known of Grey " sly " Malone , his file is kept under tight wraps , but the rumor is his family was killed in a war between two groups of gangers that reached his family's level of the hive world he is from . Hence to say both gangs are no longer in power and most members along with there leaders have disappeared , in one home of one leader the only trace was an ear other than that none of them have been seen again .

Awesome Marbo conversion, slann! He oozes the "I'm a stealthy mo-fo" attitude I imagine Marbo to have.

I plan on starting nids next month, and you're painting style would totally fit with the look of the carapace and stuff. Any tips or tutorials to your method? If that is a secret of your trade, just say so

Iron Vets I love it. I think your painting is good the conversions have taken a life unto themselfs definately solid work. Only improvement I could say is either get a better camera or work with yours little more cause I think a lot of the work is being lost in the picture. Otherwise keep it up though.
